Skaldic picture poems reveal contemporary practices of visual interpretation: a ‘Viking eye.’ A comparison with antique ekphrastic practice demonstrates the importance in these poems of vividness, emotional impact, and the ambivalence of the visual medium. Puzzle pictures, typical of decorative art in the Viking Age and before, are the picture poems’ material counterpart: both make a multisensorial appeal to both vision and touch, foreground the moment of cognitive breakthrough (indexed by the keyword kenna, ‘recognize’), and induce an undecidable oscillation between different interpretations.
