Abstract:
In the last decade, the international profile of Palestinian art has grown at an unprecedented rate. In the context of international exhibitions, the work of contemporary Palestinian artists is consistently framed as inherently political and is almost always discussed in terms of the conflict with Israel. This article examines the ways that a new generation of Palestinian artists have used their work to problematize the iconography of Palestinian nationalism developed by previous generations and the international framing of their work as inherently political. It considers the role of art in th

Abstract Background: The Phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphonate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) gene is mutated in about 30-40% of hormone receptor positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HR+/HER2−) breast cancer (BC) patients. For HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer patients with disease progression following endocrine-based therapy, the NCCN guideline recommends testing for PIK3CA mutations with tumour or liquid biopsy to identify suitable patients for targeted therapy with alpelisib, an oral α-specific PI3K inhibitor in combination with fulvestrant. Abstract Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) in women age 40 or younger represents approximately 7% of all BC cases. Studies have reported that BC in younger women is more likely to have adverse tumor characteristics and outcomes when compared to elder women. Despite the fact that BC in the Middle East seems to occur at a younger age, data on tumor characteristics in these patients are scarce, especially in the United Arab Emirates. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the incidence, clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcomes of young BC patients at a ma

Abstract:
The emphasis on precarity and conflict in contemporary art has meant that artists from sites of crisis are frequently framed as ‘local informants’, expected to perform cultural capital by narrating experiences of marginality and political conflict. This has meant that in contrast to the sphere of popular culture where marginalised groups are expected to engage humour to ‘perform’ their identity (eg. POC, female, queer stand-up comedians), performances of ‘sincerity’, ‘authenticity’ and truth remain central to intercultural encounters in contempor

Abstract“How do we see refugees? The refugee has become a multifaceted symbol, the most prominent political figure of our time” states the brochure of an art retrospective by Khaled Hourani, a Palestinian artist reflecting on the reduction of refugees to abstract symbols of victimhood by humanitarian representations. In the eyes of the artist, the blue figure (Fig. 1.1), so common in relief organizations´ visual depictions, is the migrating human being, without a specific national, religious, ethnic, or gender identity. Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates how nineteenth-century literature transcended religious frameworks and questioned the nature of male authority and feminine purity. Although the houri may have been based on assumptions about Islam, the term “houri” eventually was applied to Jewish and Christian women. The chapter surveys mentions of the houri in the form of the “Oriental tale” and argues that writers made use of the figure of the houri to present their own ideas of idealized Christian and Jewish women. Texts in the chapter include poems by Byron, Ivanhoe, Jane Eyre, Algerine Captive, Book of Khalid,
