Abstract:
This research studies the singing named khap of Tai Dam ethnic group in Laos, through the notion of musical model. Its main objective, approached with the concept of relevance, is the highlight of the competences linked to the singing, that is to say the abstract knowledge needed for the interpretation and the categorisation of the singing. The principle of musical model is the common theme of this research, and is the starting point of every chapter. Starting from musical considerations, the PhD highlights the mechanisms of musical transmission, the relationships between spoken and musical tones, as well as the different mechanisms of musical categorisation and identity categorisation. This work shows the interweaving of every of those aspects and the relevance of using different disciplines: musicology, anthropology and linguistic. The different lines of this work are approached with a perspective mobilising etic and emic perspectives and by the development of a methodology adapted to the specificities of the topic

Abstract:

Roberts, John Francis. "The Khan Variations for Solo Marimba by Alejandro Viñao: Musical Analysis and Performance Practice." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc28467/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Khan Variations is the first work for solo marimba by Argentinean composer Alejandro Viñao (b.1951). Since publication in 2001, Khan Variations has been performed at many international percussion festivals and is often a repertoire choice for performers in the final round of numerous marimba competitions. This thesis and accompanying lecture recital provide a supplemental guide to Alejandro Viñao's Khan Variations, focusing on analytical and structural theory, as well as performance practice, thus filling the void of information on this piece in the percussion community. Khan Variations was jointly commissioned by twelve of the world's prominent marimba performers and educators, including: Michael Burritt, Jack Van Geem, William Moersch, Robert Van Sice, and Nancy Zeltsman. The project organizer of the Khan Variations commission was Nancy Zeltsman, Chair of the Percussion Department at the Boston Conservatory and a leader in the field of commissioning new marimba works. Utilizing William Moersch's organization New Music Marimba as the financial conduit, Zeltsman and her group issued this commission in 1999. Alejandro Viñao studied composition with the Russian composer Jacobo Ficher in Buenos Aires, and Viñao later went on to complete his doctorate in composition from City University in London. His works span the genres of opera, choir, orchestra, electroacoustic chamber music, and more than twenty film scores. Viñao's composing style is influenced by Mexican-American composer Conlon Nancarrow and Islamic religious music known as Qawwali. Alejandro Viñao's works typically contain complex rhythmic structures and use rhythm as the main element for musical form and development. The impetus for this thesis is to provide a musical analysis and performance guide for The Khan Variations by Alejandro Viñao. This thesis also illuminates the significance of the joint commission led by Nancy Zeltsman, and highlights the influences and inspirations of Alejandro Viñao as a rising composer of international renown.

Mitra, Royona. "Akram Khan : performing the third space." Thesis, University of London, 2011. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.542429.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis theorises the practice of the performer and choreographer Akram Khan through Homi Bhabha's conceptual framework of the 'third space', and examines the relationship between his identity and his art. It argues that Khan‟s meteoric rise to stardom within the contemporary British cultural milieu is worthy of academic scrutiny, and situates his performance aesthetic at the interstices between the politics of diasporic identity and the syncretic genre of physical theatre. Consequently, the thesis challenges popular perceptions of Khan‟s language as 'Contemporary Kathak' by suggesting that instead, his aesthetic makes a significant contribution to the field of physical theatre, due to its concern with embodied subjectivities, interpersonal politics and socio-political legibility of movement. As a result it is not so much contemporising Kathak, as it is changing the landscape of physical theatre by injecting into it fundamental philosophies of Kathak, through a reconfiguration of the principles of abhinaya and rasa as laid out in the Natyashastra, the ancient Indian dramaturgical treatise. The Introduction outlines research questions addressed in the thesis and the methodological approaches undertaken, before providing a critique of the label 'Contemporary Kathak' and a genealogy of the physical theatre genre. Chapter 2 identifies interlinked biographical circumstances, creative choices and socio-political conditions that have fuelled Khan's rise to success. In Chapter 3 Khan's placement of his corporeality within the landscape of London's Docklands is analysed as an autoethnographic enquiry in his televised solo Loose in Flight (1999). Chapter 4 compares Khan to Peter Brook as an intercultural performance maker through an analysis of Gnosis (2010). In Chapter 5 Khan's multiple evocations of third space are explored in zero degrees (2005). Through Chapter 6 Khan's directorial debut in Bahok (2008) is examined as a commentary on relocated subjectivities as travelling homes. Finally, the Conclusion theorises Khan within the framework of cosmopolitanism. It then cements the ways in which Khan draws on his predecessors in the physical theatre genre, before identifying how he contributes to it by infusing into its remit the principles of abhinaya and rasa, thereby lending it a unique cultural syncretism.

Abstract:

Kimball, Laurie A. "Khan Academy in the Elementary Classroom." Thesis, Minot State University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10281206.

Abstract:

This paper examines the use of Khan Academy as a supplement to the math curriculum in a 5th grade elementary classroom. This is a qualitative case study in which the following research questions were asked: 1) What can Khan Academy do (and not do) for the students in my 5th grade classroom? and 2) What are the implications of using Khan Academy as a resource in my 5th grade classroom? Participants included students in a 5th grade classroom in an upper Midwestern elementary school. Over the course of approximately six weeks, Khan Academy was implemented into the math instruction block as one of two rotations following whole group instruction. Data was collected and triangulated from the following three sources and subsequently analyzed: direct observations, Khan Academy student progress reports, and focus group interviews. Data analysis revealed positive and negative outcomes, including student enjoyment of the gamification of the website, but also at times disengaged students who were passively receiving information with little opportunity for their own practice. This paper offers suggestions for more effective classroom implementation and implications for its use.

Castillo, C. "The archaeobotany of Khao Sam Kaeo and Phu Khao Thong : the agriculture of Late Prehistoric Southern Thailand." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10062869/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Thai-Malay Peninsula lies at the heart of Southeast Asia. Geographically, the narrowest point is forty kilometres and forms a barrier against straightforward navigation from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and vice versa. This would have either led vessels to cabotage the southernmost part of the peninsula or portage across the peninsula to avoid circumnavigating. The peninsula made easy crossing points strategic locations commercially and politically. Early movements of people along exchange routes would have required areas for rest, ports, repair of boats and replenishment of goods. These feeder stations may have grown to become entrepôts and urban centres. This study investigates the archaeobotany of two sites in the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Khao Sam Kaeo (KSK) and Phu Khao Thong (PKT). KSK is located on the east whereas PKT lies on the west of the peninsula and both date to the Late Prehistoric period (ca. 400-100 BC). KSK has been identified as the earliest urban site from the Late Prehistoric period in Southeast Asia engaged in trans-Asiatic exchange networks. There is evidence of craft specialisation and material culture that links the site to India, China and the rest of Southeast Asia. PKT has similar material culture as KSK. The purpose of examining the archaeobotanical results from KSK is to add to the understanding of how an early urban site with an active exchange network and specialised craft production would have supported itself. The results provide insights into exchanged foodstuffs and the agricultural base that sustained the different communities at KSK: the local population, temporary settlers and transient voyagers. The archaeobotany of Khao Sam Kaeo is compared to the contemporaneous site PKT. PKT lies closer to the Indian Ocean and has more Indian domesticates in the assemblage.

Kassim, Saba. "An exploration of the association between khat chewing and health outcomes in UK-resident male Yemeni khat chewers." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2010. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/494.

Full text
Abstract:
Aims: 1) To identify the characteristics of a sample of Yemeni Khat chewers in Sheffield. 2) To investigate how these characteristics are associated with: a) Self-rated "compromised‟ health. b) Self-reported oral health problems. c) Self- reported health conditions and d) Self-reported "high‟ nicotine dependence. Methods: This cross sectional study recruited a purposive sample of male khat chewers aged 18 years and above, selected during random visits to khat sellers. Data were collected through face to face structured interviews and validated using saliva and expired carbon monoxide samples. Data collected were analysed using simple descriptive, univariate and hierarchical logistic regression analyses. Results: Two hundred and four khat-chewing volunteers with a mean age of 44.84 years were interviewed. Sixty five percent were unemployed and 66% had a low level of completed education. Sixty five percent were tobacco smokers. Being older (OR=4.47, 95%CI=1.46-13.66), unemployed (OR=5.49, 95%CI=1.89-15.96), living in uncrowded housing (OR=2.65, 95%CI=1.13-6.22) and reporting low social participation (OR=2.61, 95%CI=1.22-5.61) were found to be statistically significantly associated with self-rated "compromised‟ health. A low level of completed education was found to be statistically significantly associated with self-reported oral problems (OR=2.27, 95%CI=1.02-5.04). Self-reported health conditions were found to be statistically significantly associated with being older (OR=3.10, 95%CI=1.32-7.28), unemployed (OR=4.25, 95%CI=1.57-11.47) and living in uncrowded housing (OR=2.96, 95%CI=1.38-6.37). Finally, self-reported „high‟ nicotine dependence was found to be statistically significantly associated with starting smoking in the UK or elsewhere as opposed to Yemen (OR=3.18, 95%CI=1.03-9.77), being divorced, single or widowed (OR=3.29, 95%CI=1.11-9.74) and reporting low social participation 2 (OR=3.69, 95%CI=1.18-11.51). Conclusions: A range of demographic and socio-cultural factors were identified that correlated with health impacts, reflecting social inequalities amongst this sample of khat chewers.

Abstract:
The A. Q. Khan nuclear supplier network constitutes the most severe loss of control over nuclear technology ever. For the first time in history all of the keys to a nuclear weapon*the supplier networks, the material, the enrichment technology, and the warhead designs--were outside of state oversight and control. This thesis demonstrates that Khan's nuclear enterprise evolved out of a portion of the Pakistani procurement network of the 1970s and 1980s. It presents new information on how the Pakistani state organized, managed, and oversaw its nuclear weapons laboratories. This thesis provides extensive documentation of command and control challenges faced by Pakistan and argues that Khan was largely a rogue actor outside of state oversight. The A. Q. Khan affair refutes more optimistic theories about the effects of nuclear proliferation. This case study indicates that states have a difficult time balancing an abstract notion of safety against pressing needs for organizational speed and flexibility. This thesis enumerates enabling institutional factors in Pakistan, which allowed Khan's enterprise to continue and flourish, and which might also be generalizable to other states of proliferation concern.

In this research an attempt has been made to assess and investigate the impact of the in-laws on Tshivenḓa marriage. This study was found to be necessary because although other scholars have investigated various aspects with regard to the impact of the in-laws on Tshivenḓa marriage, an in depth research on their impact has not been conducted. According to the Tshivenḓa culture, when boys and girls become older they are expected to get married. So this marriage can be influenced negatively or positively by the in-laws. Some couples are forced to live with the in-laws. There are some marriages that do not last due to the negative interference of the in-laws but there are some marriages that are succeeding due to the positive relationship with the in-laws, therefore the aim of this research is to investigate the impact of in-laws on marriages.

At the same time, the approach to mathematics practiced in the classroom has generated conflicts in the teaching and learning process, since today's students, the so-called digital natives, coexist daily with the speed and interactivity of technology. With the objective of investigating the experience of using the Khan Academy Platform in the classroom, in order to analyze its collaboration in the teaching and learning process of the 4th year of elementary school mathematics, the qualitative-quantitative approach, , Was carried out with 32 students from Elementary School I and the class teacher from a municipal public school in a small city located in the interior of the state of São Paulo. As for the procedures, we opted for the field research, in which through the observation and records of the use of the tool, we were able to analyze and construct hypotheses about its performance in the teaching of mathematics. The class replaced weekly 2 hours / math classes for 2 hours / lessons with the use of the Khan Academy platform in the computer lab in the year 2016. The difficulties encountered during the classes and the strategies that we used to overcome them, In the product of this study of Professional Masters. We developed a didactic guide in digital format with guidelines and suggestions for working with the Khan Academy platform in a school environment. We verified with this study that the use of the adaptive platform in the classroom, since done in an intentional and planned way, is beneficial to the process of teaching and learning of mathematics, causing the student to become interested in the discipline and become active in this Process, thus being the author of his own knowledge.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1997.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-104).
This thesis looks at an important Pakistani architect's work and philosophy as a possible direction or approach for contemporary architecture in Pakistan. Although there are more prolific builders in Pakistan, Kamil Khan Mumtaz (KKM) of Lahore, is one of the most important and influential figures in architectural education and the architectural discourse in Pakistan. He has tried to synthesize both pragmatic and philosophical aspects of architecture. Kamil Khan Mumtaz was trained in the Modern Movement at Architectural Association, London. His initial exposure to indigenous Architecture made him question the validity of his training. He started to search for a more appropriate architectural idiom for Pakistan. Throughout his career, he has been a pioneer in the movement for conservation of architectural heritage and raising standards of architectural design in Pakistan through different organizations he has founded and is member of. This thesis looks at three stages of evolution in the architects background, discourse and work; relating it to its cultural milieu. The first phase describes the state of architecture in Pakistan when he returns from the Architectural Association, London, and the events leading up to the situation. The background is a period of nation building following Independence and Partition and a lack of adequate architectural education in Pakistan. His early buildings reflect his Modernist training and social concerns. The second phase looks at his growing concerns with appropriate technology, and interest in indigenous building techniques and crafts. This is the period of Islamic nationalism and the Islamization program during the military regime of General Zia. The last phase, is the recent and contemporary situation, where global culture meets the deep rooted remnants of fundamentalism fanned by Zia's regime. At this time his architecture is an attempt at synthesis of modern technology and local craft with his own interest in spiritual aspects of architecture.KKM's most representative work in each of these phases will be discussed with reference to his architectural agenda at the time. Other issues raised, while assessing the work of Kamil Khan Mumtaz, are issues of regionalism relating to the evolution of his architecture. If critical regionalism is considered the preferred choice, or alternative, of architectural approach specially in Islamic and/ or developing countries, how well does KKM's work fit into that context? Finally, it explores his importance as an architect, educator and intellectual in terms of his influence on contemporary architecture in Pakistan.

Paris 10, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA100034.

Full text
Abstract:
Between the Tibetan world in the north and the Hindu one in the south, the Khammagar of Nepal, who speak a Tibeto-Burman language, present a religious organization different from the other Himalayan populations. Neither lama nor Brahman officiates in this society where the shamans monopolize the religious activity. This work is an attempt for understanding this local tradition through its rituals and the myths which are embedded in these rituals. The first part draws the outlines of the history the economy and the social organization of the Kham-Magar. Then the analysis of the consecration of a new shaman shows how the neophyte reaches an intermediary position between men and spirits through the enactment of a structure of exchange, analogous to the one which governs the matrimonial system. In the second part of the book a healing seance is described with a special concern for the respective functions of acts and words in rituals. The shaman links different kinds of speeches (myths, invocations, journeys, spells) with acts (handlings of objects, animals, persons). In this process the formalization of language tends to root the wordsinto into the acts, the general into the specific, the past into the present. Four long songs, which constitute the core of the oral tradition of the Kham-Magar are transcribed and translated here for the first time (third part)

Azmat, Tanveer. "Understanding and Qur'anic revelation| The dynamic hermeneutic of Irfan A. Khan." Thesis, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10248903.

Full text
Abstract:

The dissertation explores the Qur’anic hermeneutics of Irfan A. Khan (b. 1931), a significant contemporary scholar of the Qur’an and modern western philosophy. It demonstrates that Khan’s Qur’anic hermeneutic is a paradigm shift as compared to classical Qur’anic hermeneutic and provides a substantive theory and methodology of Qur’anic interpretation.

For Khan, Qur’anic God is perpetually active in new creation and new guidance. Since the sum total of all current existences is new creation, therefore it requires fresh guidance. Therefore, Khan considers the Qur’an a primary guide for us, as if it were just revealed. Khan proposes that readers should exert themselves directly to understand the Qur’an with their own mind, developing a personal relationship with it. The readers must keep the Sunnah of the Prophet in front of them. The Prophet and his Companions read the Qur’an in their existing socio-historic situation, purified themselves, and changed their socio-historic reality. The current readers should also follow the Sunnah in this sense. Finally, for guidance Qur’anic God has been systematically guiding humankind through prophets. After the Prophet Muhammad we are in post-prophetic stage. Thus, the Prophetic Movement changed into the Qur’anic Movement. Therefore, the responsibility of interpretation rests squarely upon humankind in the absence of any prophet.

Philosophically speaking humankind’s understanding is limited by its epistemic system. The lower bound of our epistemic system is apprehending Reality, but we always fail to apprehend it as an organic whole. The upper limit of our epistemic system is what we can think. Understanding happens between these two bounds. When we understand texts we convert textual symbols into images, manipulate the images, and get insights about the world of the text in front of us. However, it is only when we act upon it that we find the truth of our textual insights. Since our epistemic capacities keep on increasing due to advances in science, technology and the arts, it is possible to understand the same text in a deeper way in future. Thus, Qur’anic understanding is a continuous process that requires its new concretization in each historic epoch.
