Abstract:
The problem addressed in this paper is that design decisions can have a propagation effect spanning multiple life-phases influencing life-cycle metrics such as cost, time, and quality. It introduces a computational framework of a “Knowledge of life-cycle Consequences (KC) approach” aimed at allowing designers to foresee and explore effectively unintended, solution specific life-cycle consequences (LCCs) during solution synthesis. The paper presents a phenomena model describing how LCCs are generated from two fundamentally different conditions: noninteracting and interacting synthesis decision commitments. Based on this understanding, the KC approach framework has been developed and implemented as a Knowledge-Intensive CAD (KICAD) tool named FORESEE. The framework consists of three frames: an artefact life modelling frame, an operational frame, and an LCC knowledge modelling frame. This paper focuses on the knowledge modelling frame, composed basically of synthesis elements, consequence inference knowledge, and consequence action knowledge. To evaluate the influence of design decision consequences on artefact life-phases, cost, time and quality performance measures are used within the frame. Using these metrics, the life-cycle implications of a decision can be instantly updated and fully appreciated. An evaluation of the approach was carried out by applying FORESEE to thermoplastic component design. The results provide a degree of evidence that the approach integrates the activity of component design synthesis with the activity of foreseeing artefact life issues including fluctuations in life-cycle metrics. This makes the approach fundamentally different from the conventional approach in which first a candidate design solution is generated and then, at a penalty of extra time, an analysis of the solution for conflicts with artefact life issues is carried out. The framework thus provides a significant step towards the realization of a “Design Synthesis for Multi-X” approach to component design, although further work is required to exploit practically its utilization.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground:A quality dementia-screening tool is required for older remote Aboriginal Australians who have high rates of dementia and limited access to appropriate medical equipment and clinicians. The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA Cog) is a valid cognitive test for dementia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The KICA cognitive informant questionnaire (KICA Carer) had yet to be analyzed to determine validity alone or in combination with the KICA Cog.Methods:The KICA Carer was completed by nominated informants of 349 remote-living Aboriginal Australians in the Kimberley region, Western Australia. Validity was assessed by comparing KICA Carer with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) consensus diagnoses based on a blinded specialist review. KICA Carer and KICA Cog were then compared to determine joint validity. Results:A KICA Carer score of ≥3/16 gave optimum sensitivity (76.2%) and specificity (81.4%), area under curve (AUC) 0.89 (95% CI = 0.85, 0.94) with positive predictive value (PPV) of 35.8%, and negative predictive value (NPV) of 96.2%. A KICA Cog score of ≤33/39 gave a sensitivity of 92.9% and specificity of 89.9%, AUC 0.96 (95% CI = 0.94, 0.98), with PPV of 55.6% and NPV of 98.9%. Cut-off scores of KICA Cog ≤ 33/39 and KICA Carer ≥ 2/16 in series indicate possible dementia, with sensitivity of 90.5% and specificity of 93.5%. In this setting, PPV was 66.5% and NPV was 98.6%.Conclusions:The KICA Carer is an important tool to accurately screen dementia in remote Aboriginal Australians when the KICA Cog is unable to be used for a patient. It is readily accepted by caregivers.Key points:•For the best practice in the cognitive assessment of an Aboriginal Australian aged over 45 years, KICA Cog should be utilized.•In cases where Aboriginal patients are not assessed directly, KICA Carer should be conducted with an informant. A cut-off score of ≥3/16 should be used (these tools can be downloaded fromwww.wacha.org.au/kica.html).

Abstract:
Objectives: The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of evidence for the accuracy of the Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA) tool in supporting the diagnosis of dementia in Indigenous Australian populations. Methods: Cross-sectional diagnostic accuracy studies of the KICA with an appropriate reference standard published to November 2015 were included. Comparison to an alternative cognitive assessment tool was required in non-remote populations. Case control analyses were excluded. Results: Four studies were included: one of the KICA-Cog and KICA-Carer, one of the KICA Screen, and two of the modified-KICA. All tools developed for remote populations had a sensitivity of ≥76% and a specificity of ≥71% for the diagnosis of dementia. The KICA-Cog and KICA-Carer conducted in series had the highest sensitivity and specificity (91% and 94% respectively). In an urban and regional population, the mKICA had similar accuracy to the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (AUC 0.93, 95% CI 0.88–0.99 vs 0.94, 95% CI 0.89–0.99). Key risk of bias limitations related to lack of pre-determined cut-points and population selection methods. Conclusion: The use of the KICA in remote Indigenous Australians may assist in timely diagnosis of dementia in this population. Using the KICA-Cog and KICA-Carer in series may maximise specificity, decreasing false positive results without compromising sensitivity.

Abstract:
In view of the randomness in the selection of kernel parameters in the traditional kernel independent component analysis (KICA) algorithm, this paper proposes a CPSO-KICA algorithm based on Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (CPSO) and KICA. In CPSO-KICA, the maximum entropy of the extracted independent component is first adopted as the fitness function of the PSO algorithm to determine the optimal kernel parameters, then the chaotic algorithm (CO) is used to avoid the local optimum existing in the traditional PSO algorithm. Finally, this proposed algorithm is compared with Weighted KICA (WKICA) and PSO-KICA with Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP) as the benchmark. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can determine the optimal kernel parameters and perform better in terms of false alarm rates (FAR), detection latency (DL) and fault detection rates (FDR).

Abstract:
Background: Indigenous Australians have a unique cultural heritage dating back many thousands of years. Unfortunately, there is no validated tool to assess cognition in older indigenous Australians. This study was designed to address this deficiency. The Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA) was developed with Indigenous health and aged care organizations, and comprises cognitive, informant and functional sections. The psychometric properties of the cognitive assessment section (KICA-Cog) are described in this paper. Methods: The KICA-Cog was tested in 70 indigenous subjects, of varying cognitive abilities and diagnoses, over 45 years of age. Subjects were interviewed using the KICA-Cog and then independently assessed by expert clinical raters using DSM-IV and ICD-10 criteria. Interrater and internal reliability were determined. Results: The KICA-Cog score showed no systematic interrater difference; the mean was −0.07 (SD = 1.83). Interrater reliability for 16 individual questions from the cognitive section revealed a κ-value ≥ 0.6 and intraclass correlations for 12 questions. Internal consistency, as assessed by Cronbach's α, was 0.88. Three items on the cognitive score (pension week, recall and free recall) effectively discriminated 85–7% of dementia cases. Sensitivity and specificity were 90.6% and 92.6%, respectively, using a cut-off score of 31/32.Conclusions: The KICA-Cog appears to be a reliable assessment tool for cognitive impairment in an Australian older traditionally living indigenous population.

Abstract:
Usage of class D audio amplifiers has become increasingly widespread in recent years, mainly due to their high efficiency, which can reach almost 100 %. Class D amplifiers can also be compact, making them suitable for mobile applications. In contrast, the most efficient conventional amplifiers such as class B can reach a maximum efficiency of 78.5 %. The high efficiency of class D amplifiers can be attributed to the switching stage, which in the case of a half-bridge design consists of two amplifying MOSFETs. These MOSFETs are never on at the same time, which minimizes the quiescent current and thereby the power losses. The goal of this project was to design, simulate and construct a half-bridge class D audio amplifier. A working amplifier with 80 % efficiency was built, with power losses occuring mainly in the voltage regulators. Simulations of the amplifier corresponded well with the constructed amplifier apart from issues originating from the aforementioned voltage regulation as well as the triangle wave generator. The goal of the project was achieved and the finished amplifier possessed good sound quality and little unwanted noise. To further improve on the design, better voltage regulation, a full-bridge configuration and a feedback loop could be utilized.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused in the study and development of a Drive System for a DC Brushless motor. This work was conducted in the Laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion, at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the University of Patras, Greece. DC Brushless motors, have been used in the last years they are used in a number of applications. They combine all the benefits of a DC motor, such as their operation simplicity and their linear characteristics, avoiding the brushes and the necessary excitation of DC motors, making them a suitable choice for low and medium power applications. The main purpose of this project is the Study and Construction of a Three-Phase Voltage Source Inverter for the control of the performance of a DC Brushless Motor by the implementation of a Scalar control. This thesis began with the simulation of the motor, since it is necessary for the understanding of its dynamic behavior. Then an analysis on the design and construction of the required circuit boards is done. Finally the used microcontroller (dsPIC family) was studied thoroughly, before writing the necessary code(C & assembly) for open and closed loop control. Finally, measurements were taken for the open loop control system. Conclusions were made as far as the behavior of the motor and ways to optimize the control were discussed.

Vasilescu, M. Alex O. "A Multilinear (Tensor) Algebraic Framework for Computer Graphics, Computer Vision and Machine Learning." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/65327.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces a multilinear algebraic framework for computer graphics, computer vision, and machine learning, particularly for the fundamental purposes of image synthesis, analysis, and recognition. Natural images result from the multifactor interaction between the imaging process, the scene illumination, and the scene geometry. We assert that a principled mathematical approach to disentangling and explicitly representing these causal factors, which are essential to image formation, is through numerical multilinear algebra, the algebra of higher-order tensors. Our new image modeling framework is based on(i) a multilinear generalization of principal components analysis (PCA), (ii) a novel multilinear generalization of independent components analysis (ICA), and (iii) a multilinear projection for use in recognition that maps images to the multiple causal factor spaces associated with their formation. Multilinear PCA employs a tensor extension of the conventional matrix singular value decomposition (SVD), known as the M-mode SVD, while our multilinear ICA method involves an analogous M-mode ICA algorithm. As applications of our tensor framework, we tackle important problems in computer graphics, computer vision, and pattern recognition; in particular, (i) image-based rendering, specifically introducing the multilinear synthesis of images of textured surfaces under varying view and illumination conditions, a new technique that we call ``TensorTextures'', as well as (ii) the multilinear analysis and recognition of facial images under variable face shape, view, and illumination conditions, a new technique that we call ``TensorFaces''. In developing these applications, we introduce a multilinear image-based rendering algorithm and a multilinear appearance-based recognition algorithm. As a final, non-image-based application of our framework, we consider the analysis, synthesis and recognition of human motion data using multilinear methods, introducing a new technique that we call ``Human Motion Signatures''.

Abstract:
In the present era of technology drift, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a promising technology that shows the considerable transition from enterprises to businesses. In this context, renewable energy has played critical roles in developing the agricultural sector with its functionality to generate power over distant areas and different terrain. There has been a transformation in the way we consume electricity and the way it is operated by the utilities. The smart monitoring features are an efficient way to utilize energy and minimize losses. These losses might be the transmission and distribution losses or losses by the inefficient household wiring or appliances. These losses can be minimized if they are monitored well with relevant data and analytics. This book chapter presents an application of the Internet of Energy (IoE) technology in the renewable sector. The study was carried applying Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) functions and corresponding Remote Monitoring System (RMS) functions. The undertaken site for Solar Water Pump (SWP) installation for irrigation is Bihar Sharif (Nalanda, Bihar). The proposed IoE based technology served maximum power output with high efficiency during operating hours. Here, the farmers may do automatic start/shut, remote start/shut from SMS/web with a health check, and self-diagnostic mechanisms for easy maintenance. Thus, the SWP system emerged as a cost-effective and environment-friendly irrigation solution for remote farmers throughout the year. The solar potential assessment of the site and circuital development were done using PVsyst 7.0 and KiCad software tools, respectively. The successful working of the developed product has been observed at the site.

Abstract:
Abstract Collaborative engineering is knowledge work in the sense that engineers and managers must apply their knowledge to solve their problems and proceed with their work. The knowledge that is applied spans from the basic knowledge they learned from schools, application knowledge acquired from the industry, and experiential knowledge obtained from years of working experience. Most of the current research on collaborative engineering support focuses on providing communication and data sharing support for effective coordination. We argue that in order to increase the productivity of current practice of collaborative engineering, we need mechanisms that can not only facilitate information flow, but also provide active knowledge level support for engineers. Our research on KICAD — a Knowledge Infrastructure for Collaborative and Agent-based Design — attempts to develop a network of intelligent agents that capture knowledge from their associated human engineers and provide knowledge level support to them when needed. Among the issues involved in developing such a framework is the issue of knowledge management — how can we model knowledge, how can agents capture, update, manage, and utilize the knowledge for human support? In this paper, we first briefly introduce the KICAD research program and describe the issue of knowledge management in KICAD. After that we present a general knowledge application model (GKAM), the basic conceptual framework of knowledge management in KICAD. An example of applying GKAM in a prototype system will also be discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Product designers are under increasing pressure to reduce lead time, improve quality and reduce cost of a product. An important approach is to generate not only design solutions of a component, but also manufacturing models for the component at the same time so that a designer can make design decisions whilst having access to evolving “virtual” manufacturing system models. This paper presents such an approach that proactively supports designers to make informed design decisions, by revealing knowledge of component related manufacturing and assembly processes. Knowing the manufacturing and assembly implications of design decisions during design, designers are aided to avoid negative implications and promote positive ones. Based on the approach a Knowledge Intensive CAD (KICAD) prototype tool, named FORESEE has been developed. FORESEE allows designers to foresee and explore manufacturing and assembly consequences caused by design decisions, co-evolving during mechanical component design decision making. The paper presents an outline of the KICAD’s approach, its architecture, system requirements of such a system and its implementation. The application of the prototype is also demonstrated through a thermoplastic component design session.
