Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how a company could improve public engagement on social media (SM) analysing the case of Alento, which is a human resources and consulting company located in Portugal. The company’s presence on Facebook was analysed by using the honeycomb model for SM functionality, by Kietzmann et al. (2011), as a theoretical framework. Design/methodology/approach The authors implemented some actions to change procedures on SM management. Monitoring five months of data, the authors could compare the SM engagement before and after changes on SM management. Then, a convenience sample of 205 useable questionnaires was collected. The population of the study comprised Portuguese Facebook users who liked the Alento Facebook Fan Page. An analysis of honeycomb dimensions was performed. Findings The engagement level on Alento’s SM was increased by changing procedures identified on survey. In five months, Alento’s number of followers was increased by just 4.5 per cent, interactions were increased by 35 per cent, views were more than twice (+122 per cent) and fans who clicked on Alento’s Facebook page’s links were increased by 146 per cent. Research limitations/implications There were also some limitations related to the sample, since the authors only obtained 205 responses. Therefore, the second suggestion for future investigations would be to conduct the survey on a larger number of people. This study just considers five months after changing procedures. A longer range of time could produce different results. Practical implications The most relevant contribution of the current study is the offer of some insights into the use of a simple tool such as the honeycomb model of Kietzmann et al. (2011) for the analysis of the social engagement from a firm’s perspective, regardless of their nature. Social implications The importance of SM to spread good content and to reduce media costs is reinforced in this study. Originality/value This study is innovative, as it identifies a need of change on SM management, proposes and implements new procedures, checking its results. SM marketing is a new wagon of study, and the problem of how to increase engagement on professional SM is on top priorities of the field.

Abstract:
The Sharing Economy (SE) has been growing at an impressive rate across the globe (Cohen - Kietzmann, 2014) and emerging as an innovative and rapidly growing sector of the economy (Hira - Reilly, 2017), which attracted the attention of the scientific community. An increasing number of studies have been brought to light helping to document and analyze how SE manifests and evolves across economic systems, thus, contributing to refine and recast existing management theory (Mair - Reischauer, 2017). Nevertheless, there still is a lack of a common understanding of SE and its underlying mechanisms (Knote - Blohm, 2016). As an emergent category, SE has been contoured by being a mutant process, as it has been crafted by multiple and distinct temporal identity and legitimacy events, mechanisms and claims. Showing signs of being an on-going process of evolution, there is a constant need for further research to identify developments in the evolution of SE considering both identify claims (self-referential) and legitimacy (granted by stakeholders), which would offer additional comprehension about the SE phenomenon. The research addresses it by studying what is the role of SE in establishing the identity of organizations belonging to the field, considering both identify claims (self-referential) and legitimacy (granted by stakeholders)? To answer the research question, the research was designed involving two components inspired on category creation studies (Durand - Paolella, 2013; Glynn - Navis, 2013; Navis - Glynn, 2010; Kennedy - Fiss, 2013; Kennedy et al., 2010; Lounsbury - Rao, 2004; and Wry et al., 2014): 1) four prototypical SE organizations were selected, each of them belonging to Schor’s (2014) four SE archetypes of activities: (i) Airbnb – peer-to-peer, for-profit activity –, (ii) Zipcar – business-to-peer, for-profit activity –, (iii) TimeBanks – peer-to-peer, non-profit – and (iv) Make: makerspaces – business-to-peer, non-profit. The content of the evolution of their identity claims was analyzed, using data from their public available reports, as well as, other secondary data available on-line; and 2) considering the same set of SE organizations, legitimacy evolution was analyzed considering how scientific community, investors, customers, media, other analysts and other interested audiences have been constructing category meaning to them, conferring the formation of SE categorical and organizational identities, and perceptions about the viability of their business models (Tripsas, 2009, as cited in Navis - Glynn, 2010). In short, it was analyzed how stakeholders assess the viability of SE categories and organizations and can grant or withhold legitimacy to SE organizations (Zuckerman, 1999, as cited in Navis - Glynn, 2010). This research presents a new layer on framing a detailed understanding of the SE field in its maturing dimension, thus, meeting Mair’s and Reischauer’s (2017) call for studying the SE, unpack and make sense of an inspiring and complex phenomenon and thereby advancing and sophisticate the existing theory.

Abstract:
We live in a technological jungle where virtuality is present in a form of social media but, still at a complex stage. That complexity can be decoded with the use of honeycomb structure of social media given by J.H. Kietzmann et al. Social media can be called as a marvel of technology because it offers an impressive quantity of information on users and their interactions with society by providing many fresh possibilities for study exploration to researchers, economists and statisticians and many others and we tried to find out the possibility by using the social media model of Kietzmann et al The model reflects the strategies adopted by different social networks to help them out to engage with customers. The purpose of this research is to address the different characteristics or functional construction blocks of social media (i.e., identity, conversations, sharing, presence, relationships, reputation or groups) of a social media honeycomb model is helpful in developing brand awareness and engaging with customers. A survey based empirical study with N=191 social media users was conducted by using a structured questionnaire. Correlation matrix was used to find the connection between the different functional blocks of the model of social media. The results of the correlation matrix show that out of seven building blocks, five building blocks i.e., identity, conversations, presence, relationships and groups are having a strong connection, whereas the two blocks i.e., sharing and reputation are having a weak connection.

Abstract:
The injection moulding process is one of the most popular means of mass producing components to very small tolerances. Before the advent of the affordable computer, the methods used in injection mould design were empirical in nature. Computational fluid dynamics offers the mould designer a tool to predict and verify the mouldability of a part before any metal is cut on the actual mould. This thesis describes the development of a thin gap numerical model that can be used by mould designers. The thin gap assumption enables the Navier-Stokes equations to be simplified by the Hele-Shaw approximation enabling the flow variables to be solved more efficiently, without a significant loss of accuracy. Finite element solutions of the thin gap model are well documented and are well suited to solving problems with complex geometries but in general finite element methods require more memory and are slower in execution than finite-difference and finite volume methods. A personal computer based program utilising the finite volume method for solving the Hele-Shaw flow problem is developed in this thesis, which simulates the filling stage of the plastics injection moulding process. The basic model was first developed on a two dimensional constant thickness Cartesian coordinate domain using a constant tiscosity. This Newtonian model was then extended with the Volume-of-Fluid method to include the moving boundary or free front. A suitable material model was chosen to predict the viscosities of various grades of plastic at different temperatures and pressures. Once this model produced accurate results it was extended to include generalised curvilinear coordinates in order to solve problems on complex three dimensional geometries. The program is tested and verified extensively with numerical experiments and experimental data from previous published work and excellent results are obtained. The final product of this thesis is a computer program which simulates the moving boundary during the filling stage of the injection moulding process. This work contributes to the development and understanding of finite volume and finite-difference methods in the simulation of plastic injection moulding.

Abstract:
Technological developments such as social media have created challenges for DMOs (destination marketing organisations or destination management organisations). DMOs are trying to keep up with development of new social media platforms including Instagram. Academic literature shows that there is very little known about the usage of Instagram by DMOs. Research on this topic is still in its infancy. This thesis aims to find out how Leeuwarden and Amsterdam, two cities in the Netherlands, are utilising Instagram by using affordances approaches of Kietzmann et al. and Spector. A qualitative case study, as well as a content analysis and interviews provide insight in DMOs usage of Instagram affordances, which is the purpose of this thesis. Findings show that both Leeuwarden and Amsterdam mostly use similar ways in utilising the affordances by Kietzmann et al. and Spector. The honeycomb model by Kietzmann et al. shows that the affordances of Instagram mainly focus on sharing, identity and relationships. Instagram does in a very limited way focus on groups. Spector’s affordances show that collaboration, interaction and creativity are most important. Reflection, dialogue, organisation and inquiry are not important.
