Full textOsteoarthritis is one the most common illnesses amongst elderly people. An ingravescent illness maims patients, exacerbating quality of their lives and therefore this is one of the causes of their physical disability. Treatment of this illness requires a special attention of the health service system and funds. Since pervasion of the illness is directly related with age, there are some predictions that with an increasing number of the elderly people, morbidity of osteoarthritis will increase also; medical costs will be increasing respectively. This illness, together with the other methods, is being cured by the physiotherapy. If the patients suffer of the kneel joints osteoarthritis, patients training and application of the physiotherapy decreases intensity of the pain and improves functional capabilities. (Dieppe et al, 2001). Methods of the research and organization. Volunteers, having knee joint osteoarthritis, attended this research process. They received an ambulatory treatment complex. Exploratory group was divided into two parts: under 60 years (n =12) and over 60 years (n =18). Both groups received the same type of the program – 5 physiotherapy procedures up to 30 minutes. Due to the little number of the procedures and facultative attendance of the patients, there were made recommendations to perform physiotherapy procedures at home. There were evaluated the following facets – pain intensity according to the VAS scale, functional state according to the modified... [to full text]

Full textLately the topic of service quality (especially in the medicine area) is widely discussed. As this topic is very relevant in Lithuania, and there are little works performed in the area, this study should become a partial contribution to the improvement of the service quality in the health service area. It is being often questioned if the concept of physiotherapy and the work of physiotherapist as specialist are understood correctly. Thus, our study will allow understanding in what level the specialist of physiotherapy is currently located, and what place is dedicated to the physiotherapist in the health service system and legislation of Lithuania. The study performed allows deeper analysis of the understanding of patients and medical staff about the functions, aims, goals and the activity of physiotherapist as member of the rehabilitation team. Aim of study: Determine the quality of physiotherapy services and evaluate the approach of the management of medical institutions and of patients to the physiotherapy. The questionnaire survey was performed where the patients and the management of the medical institutions of Kaunas participated. There were selected 400 patients and 40 managers of institutions; the sample of study is 440 respondents. The age of participants was from 30 to 70 years; 67% of women and 33% of men. The participants were selected using typical method. The obtained results revealed that more than half of the managers of medical institutions are in ignorance... [to full text]

Full textInjuries sustained both in daily activity or in professional sports make direct influence on the quality of life of human being. Most often fractures of the lower limbs occur in the area of the ankle (Jensen, 1998): ankle fractures are found from 107 to 184 per one hundred thousand people annually. These fractures are most frequent among men of 25–35 years old and women over 50 years old (Staa, 2001). During the treatment of bimalleolar fractures of the ankle not only injured muscles, tendons and ligaments are fortified, fractures of bones are reconstituted but also the patients are taught how to keep good pace and posture. Methods. The analysis was performed at PI Kaunas Red Cross clinical hospital in 2006–2008. 30 persons were examined after bimalleolar osteosynthesis: n=22 women (73,3 percent.) and n=8 men (26,7 percent.), the average age being 47±5 years old. The patients were divided into two groups: research and control. Physiotherapy under the supervision of physiotherapist was applied to the research group together with massages while they were in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation (for 24 days) as well. The control group participations were trained and instructed to performe the excercises at home, on their own. Patients of both groups were tested before the physiotherapy was applied, after 12 days, after 24 days and after 8 months. During the analysis the following measurements were taken: plantarflexion, dorsiflexion, inversion, eversion, shin... [to full text]

Full textResearch objects: ankle’s and calf’s size, foot’s range of motion, pain, foot‘s and ankle‘s function, dynamic balance. Ankle fracture is the second most common ankle injury after the ankle sprain (Fong et al., 2007 from Beckenkamp et al., 2011). In Sweden ankle fracture occurs in 71 of 10,000 people and every year it increases by 0.2 percent. The most common reason for ankle fracture is falling of the flat surface (Thur et al., 2012). Usually ankle fracture is treated by immobilizing it for 6 weeks therefore, there is a loss of movement function that is shown in swelling, stiffness and the lack of muscle strength. Rehabilitation starts immediately after fracture stabilization or after when the cast is removed (Lin et al., 2010). After ankle fracture two thirds of patients recovers good or excellent function, but the one third has the acceptable or poor results (Nilsson et al., 2003). The aim of rehabilitation is to restore function and come back to work as soon as possible. To make proper physiotherapy program you need to know the mechanism of injury and applying anatomy and kinesiology knowledge apply the most effective treatment method (Birrer and O‘Connor, 2004). The aim of physiotherapy is to improve patients’ quality of life and daily activity (Harvey, 2008 from Pääbo and Pill, 2012), despite aging, injury or disease, or environmental effect (Giura and Nagel, 2010). Physiotherapy as distinct from operation or injection, is less risky, cheaper and after it patient can go... [to full text]

Full textSubject of research: resolving of torticollis features in infants under the influence of physiotherapy. Problem of research: Congenital muscular torticollis is the most common form of torticollis in children. It is a postural deformity detected at birth or shortly after birth, primarily resulting from unilateral shortening and fibrosis of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Infants with congenital muscular torticollis display head tilt to one side and often rotation of the head to the opposite side. It has been hypothesized that the earlier is diagnosed torticollis, the earlier starts treatment the better results can be expected. Hypothesis: 18 procedures of physiotherapy applied 2–3 times per week with the guidelines for parents should decrease signs of congenital muscular torticollis and increase range of head motion. The aim of this research was to evaluate impact of physiotherapy treating congenital muscular torticollis in 2–4 months infants. The tasks were: to evaluate signs of torticollis before applying physiotherapy; to evaluate signs of torticollis after applying physiotherapy; to find out relationship between impact of physiotherapy and age of infants; to find out relationship between impact of physiotherapy and gender of infants Methods: 40 (2–4 months) infants (22 males (55%) and 18 females (45%) were evaluated. Left side torticollis was diagnosed in 15 infants (37.5%), right side — in 25 infants (62.5%). In the center of early rehabilitation 18 procedures were... [to full text]

Full textBack pain is a common problem and one of enormous social, psychologic, and economic burden. 15 – 20% of adult population experience back pain at least once in a year, and 70 – 80% experience back pain at least once in the lifetime. Meanwhile 5 – 10% suffers from chronic back pain. Back pain afflicts about 40% of working population and is a major cause of disability in the adult working population. Aquatic therapy is an effective way for controling back pain and muscle – sceletal features. The objective of this research is to define the effects of aquatic therapy on back pain, back mobility, posture and trunk muscle endurance. In order to obtain the objective we came up with the next targets: to measure the variation of posture, back mobility, trunk muscle, back pain when applying aquatic therapy and to estimate and assess the lifestyle of the participants. We hypothesized that aquatic therapy will reduce back pain, increase back mobility, trunk muscle endurance and improve posture. 14 people with back pain participated in the research (5 men and 9 women) with the average age of 32±6,9 years. Aquatic therapy sessions were held twice a week in the swimming pool of Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education. It took 45 minutes for a session. The next measures have been taken: pain (after each session), posture evaluation (2 times), back mobility and trunk muscle endurance have been measured in the beginning of the research and every 10 weeks (4 times). Data analysis identified... [to full text]

Full textKeywords: spastic diplegia, spasticity, botulinum toxin, physiotherapy. Object: the effectiveness of intensive (5 times/week) and regular (2 times/week) physiotherapy for children with cerebral palsy after the use of botulinum toxin. Problem: Cerebral palsy is a frequent cause of children‘s motor disorder. It affects person‘s relationship with environment and limits his participation. Spasticity predominate for 70-80% of children with cerebral palsy. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is a relatively new and widely used method of spasticity management in children with cerebral palsy. Despite, that in Lithuania BTX-A has been used for 6 years for spasticity management, there is no evidence how intensivity of physiotherapy influence motor functions for children with cerebral palsy after botulinum toxin A injections. Purpose: to assess the effectiveness of intensive (5 times/week) and regular (2 times/week) physiotherapy for children with cerebral palsy after botulinum toxin A injections. Tasks: to evaluate the effectiveness of intensive and regular physiotherapy for passive ankle range of motions, for selective ankle movements, for balance and gross motor functions for children with cerebral palsy after botulinum toxin A injections. Investigative questions: the purpose of this study to compare the effifacy of botulinum toxin and intensive and regular physiotherapy by assessing changes in passive range of motions, selective movement scale, pediatric balance scale and gross motor... Full textThe object of research: indicators of hand movement functions and the specific features of their change among the children suffering from cerebral paralysis, Down's sindrome and autism. The problem of research: The care of the children with cerebral paralysis, Down's sindrome and autism has a great influence upon family life and makes it adapt to the needs of the child. While working with these children it is not always possible to employ conventional methods for the recreation of their motoric function and find the ways of how to strengthen it. Movement is an inexhaustible means of self realization, self expression and the way of learning about the surrounding world for the children with physical and psychic disability. Due to the lack of general and small motoric movements, a child‘s coordination can be impaired. A disabled child cannot or is limited to make movements changing his position in space. According to the opinion of many authors, kinesitherapy exercises are an effective way of making physical disability more bearable and help to integrale the children into the life of the society. Only the use of different methods of movement increases a child‘s ability to make correct movements and makes him more active in taking care of himself, in communication and in the course of gaining knowledge. For this reason, if the problems are neglected, more serious outcomes can be expected. This Master‘s degree thesis deals with such a program of kinesitherapy which could... [to full text]
