Abstract:
This paper approaches a large problem — the changing image of late Anglo-Saxon kingship — from a very limited perspective. In later work I hope to study Alfred's changing image as a symbol of kingship within its broader political context. This paper is limited to studying the changing relationship between Crown and monastery, as illustrated by the portrayal of King Alfred in a pair of late-Saxon saint's lives.Historians owe most of their knowledge of King Alfred to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Asser's Life of Alfred, both generally agreed to be products of Alfred's own court. Given the detail of these works and their status as “official histories,” it might be expected that all subsequent treatments of King Alfred depend on them. Yet the most popular episode of Alfred's life, the one still known by every English schoolchild, is the story of Alfred and the cakes, which occurs nowhere in these authoritative sources. In fact, by the end of the tenth century King Alfred emerges in literary contexts far from the West Saxon court, engaging in activities that are certainly not recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle or the Life of Alfred. What had taken place to give Alfred this life of his own outside of the official histories?

We report on two boys aged 2 and 6 years-old respectively with dysmorphic face, ptosis, down-slanting palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, low-set ears, malar hypoplasia, micrognathia, high-arched palate, clinodactyly, palmar simian line, pectus excavatum, winging of the scapulae, lumbar lordosis and mild thoracic scoliosis who present congenital hypotonia, slightly delayed motor development, diffuse joint hyperextensibility and mild proximal weakness. The muscle biopsy revealed minimal but identifiable changes represented by size fiber variability, type I fiber predominance and atrophy, perimysial fibrous infiltration and some disarray of the intermyofibrillary network. These cases correspond to the first Brazilian reports of the King-Denborough syndrome and our objective is increasing the awareness of this disorder as these patients are predisposed to developing malignant hyperthermia.

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the issues related to the King of the Four Corners and the God-King in ancient Sumer and Akkad in the 3rd millennium BCE. The author shows that the title King of the Four Corners has always deified the ruler, but the ruler who used the title King of the Universe never claimed divinity. What conclusions can we draw? Except in two cases – the case of Erri-dupizir and the case of Utu-ḫeĝal – all kings who used the title king of the four corners were deified. Erri-dupizir was a foreigner, more a warlord or tribal chief of the Gutians than a king, but he tried to legitimate his power by using Akkadian-Sumerian formulas, among them royal titles. Utu-ḫeĝal freed Sumer from the Gutians’ yoke and re-introduced old Sumero-Akkadian ideological elements, among them the king of the four corners, because he wanted to be as powerful and strong as the Akkadian king Narām-Su’en, who was an example for Utu-ḫeĝal. We do not have any proof regarding the deification of Utu-ḫeĝal, as he ruled only 6–7 years, and we have only a few texts from the time of his reign. More interesting is the fact that none of the Sumerian or Akkadian kings who used the title king of the universe in the 3rd millennium and even in the early 2nd millennium BCE (Isin-Larsa period) were deified (at least we do not have a firm proof). How to explain this phenomenon? Firstly, I think the title king of the four corners had a slightly different meaning than king of the universe; however, both are universalistic titles. The title king of the four corners was probably seen as a wider and more important universalistic title in the sense not only of universal rule, but also of ruling the divine universe and divine spheres (heaven, sun, stars, etc.). It seems that it included some kind of divine aspect, while at least the Sumerian version of the title lugal an-ubda-limmuba means “king of the heaven’s four corners”. The title king of the four corners was related to the universe order, to the sun and the cosmos, and to cosmic divine powers, and they were connected to the universal order. We can see that sometimes the title king of the four corners was used to refer to gods in Ancient Mesopotamia – for example in the case of the god Tišpak in Ešnunna – but never king of the universe. Secondly, early dynastic rulers (e.g. Lagash or Uruk), who never used universalistic titles for themselves, addressed universalistic expressions and epithets to the main gods – e.g., Enlil, Ningirsu, etc. For example, Lugal-kiğine-dudu of Uruk claimed: “Enlil, king of all lands, for Lugal-kiğine-dudu – when the god Enlil truly summoned him, and (Enlil) combined (both) lordship and kingship for him”. Thirdly, ruling over all the lands from east to west or over the corners of the universe – these epithets may be used for gods. LUGAL KIŠ (later Akkadian šar kiššati(m)) in its early original meaning was seen only as “ruler over Kiš (or ruler over (the northern part of) Sumer)”; it was an important though more regional and geographic title. Fourthly, only much later did it acquire the meaning king of the universe but I am not sure about that meaning at all. In that case, king of the four corners had a different meaning; the title designated not only ruling over the world but it probably included some kind of divine aspect as well (Michalowski 2010). In that case the title šar kibrāt arbaˀi(m) – king of the four corners could be seen as more universal than LUGAL KIŠ (šar kiššati(m)). There still remain several questions which need to be solved: * Was LUGAL KIŠ in its Akkadian form šar kiššati(m) a universalistic title at all? * Or was LUGAL KIŠ a hegemonic title showing certain hegemonic rule or lordship over (all) Sumer (and Akkad?) but not including the whole world (here: Mesopotamia)? * Could it be for this reason that the king who used the title king of the four corners had to be deified but the king who was LUGAL KIŠ had not?

Abstract:
Justice is one of the Assyrian Kings’ titles during the Sargon II Dynasty, 721–612 BCE. They used to say that they loved justice. Despite the existence of courts and judges, high-ranking officials and astrologers prefer to complain to the King directly using their association with the King to state their problem, sometimes between lines or at the end of the report. Most of the cases are concerned with either estate or other affairs. This paper focused on those cases; unfortunately in most cases we do not know the King’s orders except in some cases when the officials were not satisfied with the judge’s verdict, therefore they complain again and mention the King’s order as an indirect speech in the same letter.

Abstract:
AbstractOne of the most widely studied subjects in scholarship on the book of Chronicles is the question of the Eternal Reign of the Davidic dynasty. Most scholars have adopted the same methodic approach: analyzing sources in the book connected to the promise of the Davidic dynasty. This article addresses this issue from a novel angle–through a discussion of the three most wicked kings described in the book of Chronicles, Jehoram, Ahaziah, and Ahaz. It seems that the question whether the rule of a certain king, and the succession of his son after him, can be justified, arises only in cases where the king has no merits whatsoever. The comparison between these three kings uncovers numerous connections between them, especially the motif of the death of their children.

Abstract:
In June 2018 the Supreme Court of the United States decided the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop, in which baker Jack Phillips refused to provide a cake for a same-sex wedding. The Court decided the case on fairly narrow grounds; in particular, it set aside the question of whether Phillips illegally discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation by refusing to sell the same cake to a gay couple that he would sell to a heterosexual couple. Concurring opinions by Justices Kagan and Gorsuch do address that question, however, and in this paper I explore the debate between them. By distinguishing between design-based and use-based refusals of service and then arguing that some use-based refusals are tantamount to discrimination on the basis of protected traits, I argue that Jack Phillips did indeed discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. I also argue that another baker, who refused to create a “Leviticus 18:22 ‘Homosexuality is a detestable sin’ ” cake, did not discriminate on the basis of religion. I thus side with Justice Kagan against Justice Gorsuch on the question of whether the Colorado commission treated the two bakers inconsistently.

Hart, John Frederic Vincent. "The political and legal uses of reference cases by the Mackenzie King government, 1935-1940." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30645.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an examination of both the political and legal uses of reference cases to the Supreme Court of Canada by the Mackenzie King government. Attention is devoted to the five-year-period, 1935-1940, in which the King administration submitted several politically motivated references to the Supreme Court. This political use of reference cases to the Supreme Court began immediately after the Liberals returned to power in October 1935 when the government submitted the Bennett government's New Deal legislation for judicial scrutiny. Within the five-year-period the government forwarded two other references to the Supreme Court, again where highly controversial legislation was involved: the Alberta Social Credit statutes passed in 1937 and the private member's bill sponsored by CH. Cahan in 1939 to abolish overseas appeals to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, then the final court of appeal for Canada. The underlying premise of this thesis is that in each of the above instances the King government found it politically expedient to involve the Supreme Court in issues where questions of law were clearly subordinate to the political concerns of the federal government. Furthermore, in each instance, avenues of action, other than a reference case to the Supreme Court, were available to the federal government but were rejected by cabinet. Only in one instance, when Quebec's controversial 1937 Padlock Act was under close scrutiny, did the federal government avoid submitting a patently political issue to the Supreme Court, apprehensive of the consequences of such action. The federal government's reluctance to forward a reference to the Supreme Court in the case of Quebec's Padlock Act thus provides a revealing contrast to both the New Deal and the situation in Alberta where reference cases were initiated almost immediately. The federal government's marked reluctance to deal with Quebec in a comparable manner therefore merits close attention and as such is an important element of this thesis. The background to each reference case, its political origins, the reasons for the federal government's insistence on a reference--or in the case of Quebec, the reasons for avoidance of a reference—are the central issues addressed in this thesis. The cases are examined from another viewpoint as well. Once before the Court, the political issues gave way as the Court focused primarily upon the legal issues involved. The Court's decisions thereby provide another important vantage point from which to view the implications of the federal government's actions. For example, an assessment of the legal argument and judicial reasoning in the New Deal cases helps one answer these questions: First, did King's lawyers really try to win? Second, did the courts (both the Supreme Court of Canada and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council) simply bow to King's obvious desire that the legislation be declared ultra vires? Third, did the courts, as some have alleged, decide that the depression was not an emergency? Although the King government may have found it preferable for short-term considerations to submit contentious political issues involving questions of law to the Supreme Court for its legal opinion, in the long-term it found itself dealing with unexpected complications arising from the very decisions it sought. Even if the government successfully predicts the legal outcome of a court case, it may find itself dealing with a political outcome it had not anticipated. Certainly if the actions of the King government are any indication in the five-year-period under discussion, this is a complication a government seldom expects, although one as I argue, that it should prepare itself for. This thesis also demonstrates that when reference cases are employed by the federal government, politicians, constitutional scholars, political journalists and other concerned citizens should ask two important questions: First, is the reference being initiated to avoid or delay assuming political responsibility in a given situation? Second, are like situations indeed receiving like treatment? As indicated throughout this thesis, such questions are of great importance. Indeed, this thesis demonstrates that in the period between 1935 and 1940 the King administration initiated not only the New Deal reference, but forwarded C.H. Cahan's private member's bill to the courts as well, in order to avoid dealing with a controversial political issue. So, too, the period provides a telling example of an in-stance where like situations were not treated alike as the striking similarities between the situation in Alberta and Quebec indicates. Clearly, a failure to ask questions such as the ones posed above leads to the possibility that the full meaning of the reference cases themselves, their origins and their implications, will not be realized by the interested onlooker.

Ntlatleng, Morentho Johannah. "Circumstances that influence the finalisation of child sexual abuse cases in Tembisa / Ntlatleng, M.J." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7050.

Full text
Abstract:
Child sexual abuse is a major problem in Africa. There are a large number of child sexual abuse cases which are opened on a monthly basis. Child sexual abuse is a very sensitive issue and therefore trained professionals are needed in order to deal with the issue. Proper investigations need to be conducted. Due to the sensitive nature of child sexual abuse cases, finalising such cases successfully becomes a major problem. Numerous departments play a role in the investigation of these cases such as the National Prosecuting Authority, the South African Police Service, the Department of Social Development, the Department of Health, non–governmental organisations (NGOs), etcetera. The community does not have an understanding of how these cases are dealt with and, as a result, they blame the police for not doing their work properly and being useless. The role players also blame one another for the unsuccessful prosecution of perpetrators in cases of child sexual abuse. For example, prosecutors may blame the police for poor investigations and the police may, in turn, blame prosecutors for releasing suspects from custody unreasonably and removing cases off the roll for no apparent reasons. Social workers may also be blamed for not doing their work properly and taking too long to submit the assessment reports. Doctors may also be blamed for failing to attend court hearings and for filing incomplete reports. Although the role players have their inadequacies in investigating these cases, the truth is that each of them has their own unique protocol for handling cases of child sexual abuse. Therefore, a need emerged to explore the circumstances that affect the finalisation of child sexual abuse. In response to this, a qualitative study based in Tembisa was conducted. The aim of the study was to identify the circumstances that contribute to the finalisation of child sexual abuse cases in Tembisa. From the survey it was clear that there are several contributing factors, such as the delay of DNA results, inadequate training of the role players, and service points that are understaffed. The researcher came to the conclusion that the successful prosecution of child sexual abuse cases lies with all the role players in the investigation of child sexual abuse.

Abstract:
Due to the legal obligation to report actual or suspected cases of child sexual abuse and neglect, parents, concerned community members and friends, as well as various professionals like teachers, doctors and psychologists, refer children on a daily basis to social workers in order to initiate an investigation of the allegations. The intake interview is therefore a critical step in the process of child protection and care. In the context of this study, intake interview refers to the initial contact between the social worker and the child in the case of child sexual abuse, where a social worker seeks to establish all objective facts relating to the case so as to make informed decisions and to act accordingly. The Mafikeng Service Point of the Department of Health and Social Development has no standard procedures for social workers in cases of child sexual abuse. It is against this background that a North West based study on the child sexual abuse intake procedures was conducted at Mafikeng Service Point. The study was descriptive and quantitative in nature, with the aim of making a theoretical as well as an empirical study of the intake procedures at the time of the investigation. Data was collected by means of a self–administered questionnaire on the current intake procedures of 30 social workers. Data was triangulated by analysing 15 case files of reported child sexual abuse. It was found that the majority of social workers of the Mafikeng Service Point lack sufficient knowledge and skills regarding interviewing child sexual abuse cases and the legal requirements involved. As a result, they follow diverse and largely inefficient intake interview procedures. The 15 case files that were analysed revealed that social workers do not perform follow–up sessions after the intake and that case files are therefore not officially closed. Recommendations are made to the Mafikeng Service Point with regard to the intake procedures of child sexual abuse cases.

ABSTRACT Sichuan Buddhist statues are historical, leaving precious legacy of art assets, building a model of advanced grotto art in China in recent years. Scholars have dedicated to Grottoes and gained a considerable achievement. However, in related studies, researchers have always concentrated on a few famous grottoes in Sichuan. Sichuan Grotto statues are lack of systematic protection, so are the grottoes. The General research of Buddhist statues, mainly concentrated on the body of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, not even focus on the protective deities, and heavenly kings. For the reasons of its emergence, the statues of the ritual ... and so on, systematic researches and in-depth monographs are rarely seen. King statues of Sichuan Grottoes are often put alone in chisel shrine as the main statue enshrined except for being put as a protective deity. It is an extremely rare situation in other parts of the grottoes, also the main features of Sichuan grotto. In order to make a deeper analysis and discussion about Sichuan heavenly kings’ statues, the research analyzes the information, combined with a lot of graphic materials based on historical documents and archaeological reports, trying to let "kings" to be closer to the general public. The research divides the thesis into five chapters as following. The first chapter explains the motivation, related researches and literature, methodology and scope. The second chapter explores the historical position and importance of Sichuan in the Grotto chain, starting from Sichuan Grottoes geographical environment, cultural background, historical development, distribution, and the statues’ characteristics. In the third chapter, the research does the presentation and interpretation of the concept of "Heaven", "King", "Four Kings", and "Prevail King " in details through the combining its functions and the images in the records and the classic books. After all, it will be difficult to see the whole picture if not starting from the scriptures when studying Buddhist statues. In chapter four, it shows the tabular, data, images based on the collected drawings of the grotto kings’ statues in Sichuan. It also sorts out the specific kings’ statues and the process of changes through comparing the text data and images. It traces the origin of kings’ statues in the grottoes and defines the image of kings clearly, and get to know that the distribution of kings’ statues in Sichuan Caves and kings’ unique styles. The conclusion is in chapter five. Keywords: Sichuan, Grottoes, protective deities, heavenly kings, Prevail King

In recent years, the diet has become more diverse in Taiwan, and the staple food has gradually changed from rice to bread and noodle. The government has tried to promote numerous policies in order to improve the grain self-sufficiency ratio. It is an effective way to make dessert by using rice flour instead of flour to increase food consumption. In this study, flour and rice flour were used to make cakes respectively and the cakes were provided to the consumer for conducting the sensory evaluation. The object of study was the parent of the Lion King's child baking class. 50 questionnaires were distributed and 50 valid questionnaires were collected. The effective rate was 100%. The results of the questionnaires indicated that using 100% rice flour instead of low gluten flour to make cakes was completely feasible. Easterners prefer chewy food such as mocha (a kind of rice cake), Chinese steamed bun, etc. The rice flour has no protein, so the taste of rice cakes is chewier than that of flour cakes. Due to the special aroma of white rice, the rice Chiffon cake obtained good acceptability in each item of the sensory evaluation. Moreover, the rice Chiffon cake was more satisfying in some items of the sensory evaluation compared to the Chiffon cake. In terms of the current promotion situation of rice flour, Taiwan has the same problem as Japan, except high production costs, the quality of rice flour is not as good as that of wheat flour, and the product aging rate of rice flour is faster than wheat bread. For the industry, the product lifespan is not long. It can be improved by breed improvement and grinding technology research and development. It is suggested to improve the situation in the following four aspects: (1) reduce the production cost; (2) combine with the local leisure industry (3) adjust the formula and combine with health maintenance (4) establish the internet platform to market the younger generation.

AbstractIf the microphysical domain is deterministic, this would seem to leave God with only two ways of influencing events: setting initial conditions or law-breaking intervention. Arthur Peacocke and Philip Clayton argue there is a third possibility, if there is strong emergence. We will examine four candidates for emergence: of intentionality from computational animal behavior, of sentience from biology, of biology from chemistry, and of chemistry from finite quantum mechanics. In all four cases, a kind of finite-to-infinite transition in modeling is required, and in each case a kind of randomness is involved, potentially opening up a third avenue for divine action.

Abstract:
Abstract There are several concepts of what constitutes the analytical solution of a quantum model, as opposed to the mere “numerically exact” one. This applies even if one considers only the determination of the discrete spectrum of the corresponding Hamiltonian, setting aside such important questions as the asymptotic dynamics for long times. In the simplest case, the spectrum can be given in closed form, the eigenvalues $$E_{j}, j=0,\ldots ,N\le \infty $$ read $$E_{j} =f(j,\{p_{k}\})$$, where f is a known function of the label $$j\in \mathbb {N}_{0}$$ and the $$\{p_k\}$$ are a set of numbers parameterizing the Hamilton operator. This kind of solution exists only in cases where the classical limit of the model is Liouville-integrable. Some quantum-mechanical many-body systems allow the determination of the spectrum in terms of auxiliary parameters $$[\{k_j\},\{n_l\}]$$ as $$E(\{n_l\}) = f(\{k_{j}(\{n_{l}\})\})$$ where the $$\{k_{j}(\{n_{l}\})\}$$ satisfy a coupled set of transcendental equations, following from a certain ansatz for the eigenfunctions. These systems (integrable in the sense of Yang-Baxter (Eckle 2019)) may have a Hilbert space dimension growing exponentially with the system size L, i.e., $$N\sim e^{L}$$. The simple enumeration of the energies with the label j is replaced by the multi-index $$\{n_{l}\}$$. Although no priori knowledge about the spectrum is available, its statistical properties can be computed exactly (Berry and Tabor 1977). Other integrable and also non-integrable models exist where N depends polynomially on L and the energies $$E_j$$ are the zeroes of an analytically computable transcendental function, the so-called G-function $$G(E,\{p_k\})$$ (Braak 2013a, 2016), which is proportional to the spectral determinant. Although no closed formula for $$E_j$$ as function of the index j exists, detailed qualitative insight into the distribution of the eigenvalues can be obtained (Braak 2013b). Possible applications of these concepts to information compression and cryptography are outlined.

Abstract:
Generalizing the classical Riemann-Liouville and Erde´yi-Kober fractional integral operators two integral transforms involving Gaussian hypergeometric functions in the kernel are considered. Formulas for composition of such integrals with generalized Bessel function of the first kind are obtained. Special cases involving trigonometric functions such as sine, cosine, hyperbolic sine and hyperbolic cosine are deduced. These results are established in terms of generalized Wright function and generalized hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:
Objective: To study the risk factors, management protocols and outcome of vulvar cancer cases over a period of 10 years in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: It is a retrospective cohort study of vulvar cancer from January 2004 to January 2014 at King George Medical University, Lucknow. Hospital records of 41 patients with histologically proven diagnosis of vulvar cancer were studied from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Department of Radiotherapy. The presence of risk factors, stage of disease, treatment modalities used and disease outcome in terms survival were studied. The data collected was analyzed and compared with the published literature. Results: The mean age for diagnosis of vulvar cancer was 52 years and peak incidence was seen in age group of 50-70 years. Incidence was significantly more in multiparous (p = 0.001) and postmenopausal women (p = 0.007). An average of 4.1 cases were seen per year. 97.56% cases were squamous cell carcinomas including one case of verrucous carcinoma. Only one non-squamous case of Bowen’s disease was seen. 20 cases belonged to early stage (1 and 2) while 21cases had advanced disease (3 and 4). 48.78% cases were primarily treated with surgery, 26.83% with radiotherapy, 7.3% with chemotherapy and 17.07% with combined chemoradiation. 78% of surgically treated cases had mean survival of 5 years. Mean survival of 1 year was recorded in advanced disease cases. Limitation of the study was poor follow up after treatment. Conclusion: Incidence of vulvar cancer is significantly high in multiparous and postmenopausal women. Surgical treatment is the best option in early stage of disease (stage I and II) and gives high survival rates while advanced disease treated with chemoradiation has poor survival.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, three leakage failure cases of heat exchange tubes have been introduced. The reasons of the leakage for austenitic stainless steel tubes and overlay welding layer on the tube sheet have been analyzed. Through the investigation of the operation process and histories of the equipment, and after chemical compositions analysis of tube material and corrosion products, metallographic test of specimens with cracks, and fracture surface scan with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), the cracking reason and mode are described as the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of austenitic stainless steel. This kind of cracking in three cases was induced by the micro chloride in the high temperature water (or steam). Moreover, sulfide and dissolved oxygen also reduced the threshold value of chloride concentration and enhanced the corrosion rate for SCC. The cracking mode of Case A and B are transgranular; and Case C is intergranular. It indicates that for this kind of in-service heat exchanger, the operators should not only control the chloride concentration in feed water, but also the sulfide and dissolved oxygen in the future. The austenitic stainless steel tubes (China steel types-1Cr18Ni9Ti and 0Cr18Ni10Ti, equal to Type 304 and Type 321 according to ASME code) used in this cases are not fit to this condition. Thus, for the new heat exchanger design, the tube material should be changed into austenitic-ferritic (duplex phase) steel, such as 2205 Series, which has an excellent performance for SCC resistance in the high temperature water (or steam) with chloride.

Abstract:
The pneumatic storage of energy is one of the few economical storage processes which can be considered at present for large quantities of energy. Present Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) plants are designed on the basis of construction and operating experience at Huntorf, the world’s first air-storage plant [1]. That means, that the turbine of the plant is equipped with combustors to increase the power output during turbine operation, and to reduce the volume and cost of the air storage facility as well as the quantity and cost of the required charging energy [2]. In this paper it is explained that the Brown Boveri CAES turbomachinery is able to burn a variety of different fuels. This opens in many cases the possibility to choose a cheaper or better available fuel to reduce furthermore the operating cost of this kind of power plant.

Abstract:
Most floating fish cages consist of a floating cage collar, mooring system, and net cage hanging freely down from the floater. Any current moving through the net will deform the net. This deformation depends on the current velocity, the nets ability to attract forces, and the gravity forces from weights at the lower end of the net. The forces on the net will vary with the deformation. This paper shows that for this kind of cage, a reduced velocity Vred = U·(ρ/2G)1/2, where G is the equivalent weight per area of the net, will be sufficient to estimate the drag force and deformation of the net. The present work is analytical, combined with computer simulations. The reduced velocity parameter could be used to determine the needed bottom weights. The quick estimation of the drag force on the net could be used as an input to mooring design.

Abstract:
An approach for identification of faults in blades of a gas turbine, based on physical modelling is presented. A measured quantity is used as an input and the deformed blading configuration is produced as an output. This is achieved without using any kind of “signature”, as is customary in diagnostic procedures for this kind of faults. A fluid dynamic model is used in a manner similar to what is known as “inverse design methods”: the solid boundaries which produce a certain flow field are calculated by prescribing this flow field. In the present case a signal, corresponding to the pressure variation on the blade-to-blade plane, is measured. The blade cascade geometry that has produced this signal is then produced by the method. In the paper the method is described and applications to test cases are presented. The test cases include theoretically produced faults as well as experimental cases, where actual measurement data are shown to produce the geometrical deformations which existed in the test engine.

Abstract:
Nuclear power plants contain certain components whose gross failure would lead to intolerable radiological consequences. In the UK, a common terminology used for such components is Very High Integrity (VHI). If it is not possible to engineer lines of protection for these components, a safety case must demonstrate to UK regulators that the probability of gross failure is demonstrably so low that it can be discounted. A previous paper [Ref. 1] has described, at a high level, how the structural integrity safety case for a nuclear new build project in the UK — the UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR) is being structured. As described in [Ref. 1], the structural integrity safety case for the UK ABWR is based on the guidance provided by the UK Technical Advisory Group on Structural Integrity (TAGSI) and aims to demonstrate a multi-legged safety case with robust and independent legs giving confidence of defense in depth. Design to the internationally recognized ASME code [Refs. 2, 3, 4] is supplemented by a significant number of beyond code requirements such as supplementary inspection and inspection qualification, augmented material testing requirements, defect tolerance assessment to the well-established R6 procedure [Ref. 5], and demonstration that design and manufacturing processes have reduced risks to As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). This paper provides an updated position of the progress made on the UK ABWR project. It also provides more specific details on the activities the future licensee, Horizon Nuclear Power, has performed in support of the demonstration that design and manufacturing processes have reduced risks to ALARP. This kind of additional work is vital to providing the UK regulator with confidence that the risk of failure of VHI components has been reduced to ALARP.

"The Influence of the Bauschinger Effect on the Combined Stress Intensity Factors of Multiple Longitudinally Coplanar Cracks in Autofrettaged Pressurized Cylinders." Full text
Abstract:
The influence of the Bauschinger Effect (BE) on the three dimensional, Mode I, Combined Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) distributions for arrays of longitudinal coplanar, surface cracks emanating from the bore of a fully or partially autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder is investigated. The combined SIFs, KIN, that depend on both the “realistic” - Bauschinger Effect Dependent Autofrettage (BEDA) and “ideal” - Bauschinger Effect Independent Autofrettage (BEIA) are obtained and compared for crack to wall thickness, a/t = 0.01–0.25; crack ellipticity, a/c = 0.5–1.5; crack spacing ratio, 2c/d = 0.25–0.75; and autofrettage level, e = 30, 60 and 100%. The 3-D analysis is performed via the finite element (FE) method and the submodeling technique, employing singular elements along the crack front. Both autofrettage residual stress fields, BEDA and BEIA, are simulated using an equivalent temperature field. The KIN is found to vary along the crack front with the maximum determined by the crack ellipticity, crack depth and crack spacing ratio. For a partially autofrettaged cylinder, the influence of the BE on the combined SIF, KIN, is considerably reduced as the level of overstrain becomes smaller. For some cases, when comparing like crack distributions, the KIN values obtained from the BEDA model are found to be as much as 100% higher than the KIN values that are computed using the BEIA model. A pressurized thick-walled cylinder with BEDA can be most dangerous when small cracks have small spacing ratio, i.e., when the cracks are farther apart. As crack length increases, or, for increased spacing ratio when the spacing between cracks is smaller, the SIFs increase. Though the differences in the BEDA SIF, KIA, between e = 100% and 60% are small (7–15%, in most cases), the increased level of autofrettage produces a 23–30% decrease in the combined SIF values, KIN. In certain cases, the BEIA model implies an infinite fatigue life, whereas the BEDA model for the same parameters implies a finite life. Therefore, it is important to perform a full 3-D analysis to determine the real life cycle of the pressurized cylinder for materials that exhibit the Bauschinger effect.

Abstract:
The elliptic integral solution is often considered as the most accurate method for analyzing large deflections of cantilever beams in compliant mechanisms. In this paper, by explicitly including the number of inflection points (m) and the sign of the end-moment load (SM) in the derivation, a comprehensive solution based on the elliptic integrals is proposed for solving the large deflection problems. The comprehensive solution is capable of solving large deflections of cantilever beams subject to any kind of load cases and of any kind of deflected modes. A few deflected configurations of complex modes solved by the comprehensive solution are presented and discussed. The use of the comprehensive solution in analyzing compliant mechanisms is also demonstrated by a few case studies.
