SUMMARY King penguin chicks identify their parents by an acoustic signal, the display call. This call consists of a succession of similar syllables. Each syllable has two harmonic series, strongly modulated in frequency and amplitude, with added beats of varying amplitude generated by a two-voice system. Previous work showed that only one syllable of the call is needed for the chick to identify the calling adult. Both the frequency modulation pattern of the syllable and the two-voice system play a role in the call identification. The syllabic organisation of the call, the harmonic structure an

Described as ‘[e]vocative of noir thrillers and bromantic buddy-cop movies’ on Penguin Random House’s website, the novels rest on a premise that, this paper argues, is carried not only by a liberal nostalgia for the Obama presidency and, in the case of Feel the Bern, small town

Fergus, Maureen. The Gypsy King. Toronto: RazorBill Penguin Canada, 2013. As a fan of all three, my expectations were high and I was a little disappointed. The book is enjoyable, the writing is engaging, the plot has a few interesting twists, the main characters are interesting, but the abrupt ending felt like a marketing ploy. At least it is an effective ploy. I am already watching the shelf for the next book in the series to arrive.Fergus

In the Penguin Classics edition of Jane Austen’s Emma, the editor of the volume, Fiona Stafford, writes: “From its first appearance, late in December 1815, Emma has been criticized for its lack of action. . . .” These are harsh words for a novel, suggesting deficiency in story. That hardly spells “failure.” It appears that Emma presents a kind of informal paradox or dilemma for the philosophy of art. Emma, although it is agreed on all hands to
