ABSTRACTIn the 1850s, the Piedmontese ‘moderate’ liberals created a peculiar political culture, suited to the twofold task of strengthening representative institutions at home and justifying Piedmont's Italian mission. Inspired by both the whig tradition and the French Doctrinaires, the moderates elaborated arguments advocating elite government and countering democracy. Gioberti, Balbo, Carutti, Mamiani, and Boncompagni shared five theses: (1) natural (and/or divine) laws are both the ultimate source of right and wrong in politics and the guarantee of gradual progress; (2) only the citizens wh

Abstract In 1864, the patent law of the Kingdom of Sardinia was extended to the newly created Kingdom of Italy. In this paper, on the basis of a new dataset containing all Italian patents granted over the period 1855-1872, we examine the formative years of this crucial institutional change. Firstly, we map the characteristics of the inventors before and after the 1864 reform. In particular, we look at their nationality and geographical distribution within the country, the technological fields in which they were active, the intensity of use of the system (sporadic versus “systematic” patentees)

The search for inscriptions in Sardinia in the modern period stems from the desire of Sardinian antiquarians to reconstruct local history through the help of epigraphic documentation. In the 17th century, the purposes of counterfeiters were primarily to boost the cultural and political primacy of both Cagliari and Sassari, to extol the close relationship between Sardinia and Spain, and to assert the Christian roots of Sardinian culture. In the 19th century , the main objectives were firstly to reinstate the island’s prestige and, secondly, to reinforce its role in the cultural landscape of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the legal implications of the Italian political unification occurred in 1861 as it emerges from the relevant—and not yet fully analysed—practice. The main objective is to ascertain whether the process of the Italian unification was realized within the empire of international law and, in the affirmative, to what extent the juridical categories of international law were used to achieve the objective of independence and to consolidate the new unitarian State in the international community. Thus, three issues are clearly relevant in this respect: the first concerns the conduct of the Kingdom of Sardinia in its relations with the pre-unitary States in the light of the norms of international law in force at the time of the facts; the second is the emergence of the principle of nationality and its consequences on the legal conceptions of the statehood; and, finally, the legal consequences of the alleged continuity between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the new Italian State.

This chapter continues to explore the efforts of American consuls in the Mediterranean, and focuses on the diplomatic relationship between the United States and the Republic of Genoa in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. It charts the diplomatic efforts of Giuseppe Ravara during the 1790s, through to American-born consul Peter Kuhn Jr in 1805, tracing the successes and difficulties made by consuls in Genoa as the trade network with America increased in scope. It concludes that trade between Genoa and America grew rapidly between 1790 and 1820 in large part due to the efforts of the consuls, and that before being annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia, Genoa profited economically from a special trade relationship with America.
