Roethle, Christopher. "Honey from Maggots: Aura, Sacrifice, and the Human Universe in Charles Olson’s “The Kingfishers”." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22644.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I contend that some form of aura can be recovered from the ravages of technological reproduction described in Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of its Technological Reproducibility (Third Version).” Recovering this aura, however, may require adopting an aesthetic of immediacy through destruction and even wanton disposability (what Georges Bataille in his general economic theory calls “nonproductive expenditure”) to ensure that, though routinely diluted and discarded, the split-second authenticity of a work remains, its radical ephemerality and formal irreproducibility opposing the enslaving, commodifying powers of the copy. The poetry and poetic theory of American poet Charles Olson, especially in his long poem “The Kingfishers” and his essays “Projective Verse” and “Human Universe,” serves as an example of how an author might inscribe auratic energy along nonproductive, general economic lines.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.B., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2014.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references.
The Clearpath Robotics Kingfisher M200 robot is an unmanned water surface vehicle with payload autonomy capability. This allows users to develop autonomy control on an offboard computer until it is ready for use on the autonomous vehicle. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Battelle Autonomy Laboratory plans to utilize this feature in both teaching and research applications so that users can develop autonomous missions on off-board single-board computers and then easily integrate their missions with the vehicles when ready. Although the M200's payload bay includes a waterproof data connection port, there is no provided environmental protection for the payload computer itself. This paper documents the design and production of a waterproof payload computer module that allows for the operation of the single-board computer, data interface with the M200's on-board computer and for the attachment of additional USB components. The Raspberry Pi was selected as the most appropriate single-board computer and the Otterbox Drybox 3000 was selected as the most appropriate enclosure. Electrical circuitry was designed to allow for power to the computer, data communication with the M200 and USB connections for additional components, and combination of cable glands and panel-mounted connectors were used to allow these connections to be accessible from the outside of the enclosure while retaining a NEMA 4 waterproof enclosure rating. In order to create a robust and user-friendly module, a system of strain relief and component orientation was designed. Continuous testing and adapting of prototypes resulted in a compact, operational payload module that can easily be interfaced with the Kingfisher M200 to provide payload autonomy as well as offer two additional USB ports for the connection of additional components. This design aims to be easily reproducible by other Kingfisher M200 users, as well as adaptable to other payload autonomy applications.
by Emily L. Dunne.
S.B.

Wu, Yiqian. "A Study of Historical Transformation and Cultural Change in Chinese Dian-cui Jewellery." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24005.

Full text
Abstract:
Dian-cui (dotting with kingfisher feathers) refers to a traditional Chinese manufacturing technique for decorating jewellery and other precious handicrafts using the blue feathers of kingfishers. As an original contribution to knowledge, this thesis examines changing cultural perspectives on dian-cui jewellery based on key historical transformations in China. It begins by describing the history of this specialised branch of jewellery in late imperial China, then considers cultural changes in China, and internationally, thereby generating new insight into shifting attitudes towards the ethical and aesthetic dimensions of the use of kingfisher feathers for ornament and decoration. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the history and aesthetics of Dian-cui jewellery in China. Chapter 2 discusses dian-cui headdresses among female and male wearers in the Qing Dynasty. Chapter 3 draws on the concepts of nostalgia and authenticity in a critical analysis of contemporary dian-cui reproductions through a case study of Qing Palace Drama. Chapter 4 examines the cross-cultural debate on animal ethical issues and dian-cui jewellery. Chapter 5 discusses Dian-cui hybrid jewellery in contemporary China. Chapter 6 critically analyses Orientalism, Cartier kingfisher feather clocks, and the Art Deco Movement.

Hart, Peter Bartholomew. "A plm implementation for aerospace systems engineering-conceptual rotorcraft design." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/28278.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

Kesler, Dylan C. "Nest-site selection in cooperatively breeding Pohnpei Micronesian Kingfishers (Halcyon cinnamomina reichenbachii) : does nest-site abundance limit reproductive opportunities?" Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/32284.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite their inherent importance and utility as ecological examples, island species are among the most endangered and least studied groups. Guam Micronesian Kingfishers (Halcyon cinnamomina cinnamomina) exemplify the plight of insular biota as a critically endangered and understudied island bird that went extinct in the wild before they could be studied in their native habitat. Guam kingfishers currently exist only as a captive population in U.S. zoos. Using radio telemetry and visual observations of a wild subspecies of Micronesian Kingfisher (H. c. reichenbachii) from the island of Pohnpei, this study examined factors critical for the persistence of both the Guam and Pohnpei kingfishers. Behavioral observations indicated that the birds employ a cooperative social system, which included non-parent individuals that assisted in reproductive attempts of others. Because resource limitations have been cited as a potentially important factor in the evolution of cooperative behaviors and in conservation, this investigation assessed the characteristics and availability of a potentially limited nesting resource, arboreal termite nests. First, the characteristics of termite nests, or termitaria, selected by Micronesian Kingfishers for use as nest sites were modeled. Results suggested that Micronesian Kingfishers selected termitaria that were higher from the ground and larger in volume than unused termitaria. Further, there was little evidence that birds selected from among termitaria based on proximity to forest edges and foraging areas, placement on a tree, vegetation characteristics, or microclimate. Second, the number of termitaria with characteristics indicative of nest sites was assessed to determine if reproductive opportunities might be limited by the abundance of suitable termitaria. Results from this analysis suggested that although fewer termitaria existed with characteristics similar to those used for nesting, reproductive opportunities did not appear to be limited by their abundance. Therefore, while conservation strategies should be directed towards providing ample and appropriate nesting substrates, I found no evidence suggesting that termitaria abundance played a role in the evolution of cooperative breeding in Pohnpei Micronesian Kingfishers. Findings presented here will hopefully enhance our understanding of cooperative behaviors, as well as improve conservation efforts for Micronesian Kingfishers and other insular avifauna.
Graduation date: 2002

Groenewold, Benjamin. "Kingfishers and Criteria: a New Approach to the Engineering Design Method." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10756/288493.

Full text
Abstract:
The usual method of designing a solution for a problem, which applies general principles to a specific situation, tends to overlook the unique features of each situation and so must inevitably efface the very structure of what it means to create, and so resolve diversity and plurality into blank uniformity. This is grave problem which a renewed attention to the individuality of things might help resolve. This project considers the criticism of several thinkers (including John Duns Scotus, Martin Heidegger, Theodor Adorno, and J.C. Jones) on the schema of general and particular that undergirds the engineering design method. It then seeks to open up further the suggestions these thinkers have for a new approach to the design method not enthralled to an understanding of general categories, but grounded in a contemplation of the individual.

Abstract:
碩士
國立屏東科技大學
野生動物保育研究所
102
The Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) uses vertical and bare banks to reproduce. However, many rivers are devoid of these natural banks due to flood control work, leading to a reduction in the number of available breeding sites. And there is a shortage of kingfisher's research in Taiwan. Hence, this study set the width of the artificial slope along the Donggang River, soil samples are collected to analysis from the artificial slope, and breed of observation. In 2012, 10 artificial slopes were set, 2 of them were used. In 2013, 8 out of 16 artificial slopes were used. In 2013, the highest usage frequency among the 1m, 2m and 3m slopes are the 3 m slope. The usage count are 3m 7 times , 1m 4 times , and 2m 3 times. That confirms the previous observation of the larger the slope area, the higher the reproductive opportunities. The soil samples were collected from 40 artificial slopes. Samples were sieved to analyze the composition of particle size and compare the differences between the slopes with kingfisher nesting (n=10) and the slopes without nesting (n=30). We discovered that the slopes with nesting, the particle size of 1-0.5 mm weight percent lower than the slopes without kingfisher nesting (P=0.019). The weight percentage of particle size 0.25-0.104 mm in the nesting slopes are higher than the slopes without kingfisher nesting (P=0.022). Other particle size differences was not significant. The kingfisher used soils with sandy clay loam and sandy loam. The selection of soil texture may be affected by it drainage and cohesion. Kingfisher produced 4-7 eggs of each nest, with an average clutch size at 5.1 ± 1.5 eggs (n=16). The recorded hatchling are 3-7 chicks, the average number of hatching is 3.8 ± 2.9 (n=11). The reproductive success rate is 62.4%. The kingfishers incubation period is 26 days (n=15), brooding takes about 20 days (n=12), after the fledgling leaves the nest, the fledgling will live close to the nest for about two weeks. In the future, this study can provide management of the riparian or wetland and preserve the bank to breed for the kingfisher or Plain Martian (Riparia paludicola) in Taiwan.

Albano, Daniel Joseph. "A behavioral ecology of the Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon)." 2000. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9960732.

Full text
Abstract:
The Belted Kingfisher is a non-passerine aerial piscivore of relatively recent tropical descent that breeds in earthen burrows along watercourses throughout the temperate zone of North America. In the following chapters I explore the ways in which this suite of life history traits may influence patterns of mortality and fecundity among individuals and thus help to shape the overall behavioral ecology of this species. All kingfishers defending territories in the Connecticut River valley during the winters of 1992–1998 were males. These overwintering males were adults that previously bred in the area and juveniles that dispersed into the area the preceding autumn. Banding and museum-skin data suggest that this pattern of unequal sex distribution during the winter occurs across North America at latitudes north of approximately 40–45°N. Because males and females are equal in body size and social dominance, it appears that advantages associated with year-round breeding-site occupation outweigh the potential costs of overwintering more often for males than for females. One way that males may reduce the potential costs of overwintering at high latitudes is to roost at night in earthen burrows, a habit that I found can reduce a bird's nocturnal thermoregulatory costs by ∼20%. The enhanced probability for burrow-roosting kingfishers to survive climatic extremes may represent an adaptation allowing this species to extend the northerly limit of its non-breeding geographic range. Like many temperate-breeding birds that nest in cavities, nesting success for kingfishers along the Connecticut River was high; females almost invariably laid 7 eggs, few of these eggs failed to hatch (<10%), and few nestlings failed to fledge (<15%). Like many socially monogamous non-passerines, males and females shared all phases of parental care more or less equally, including incubation. Testosterone levels of males peaked during the sexual phase of breeding and remained both high and variable until dropping abruptly once nestlings hatched. Perhaps reflecting differences in post-breeding agendas, the sexual differences in “parental motivation” that I did observe among kingfishers tended to occur late in the nestling period, when males fed the young more often and females more often abandoned.

Abstract:
碩士
輔仁大學
應用統計學研究所
88
The DIY concept has become very popular in Europe and the United States since the Second World War. It is accepted by more and more people around the world due to people pay more attention to environmental related issues. Based on the above idea, the first joint venture Testrite Kingfisher store was founded in Tao-Yuan and became the pioneer in the home improvement market in Taiwan. The store was widely accepter by the residents in Taiwan and had attracted more than 110,000 members in 1997-only one year after its grand opening. New members are still growing under 20 to 30% annual growth ratio. Seven other branches were therefore founded and proved the continuously developing potential of home improvement market in Taiwan. In order to understand the customer behavior and purchasing cite preference, a survey was conducted for 400 customers sampled from the Hsin-Chuang branch. The research findings indicated that the majority of the customers get their information about B&Q from traditional TV commercial and only very few customers get it from the internet. Most people came by private vehicles and the main of coming is shopping rather than DIY courses and consulting services. In terms of the frequency of visiting the store, the majority of the customers came between 2 weeks and up to 6 months. And the people with higher salary, more companions, longer shopping time, like to visit the store during the weekends and driving their own vehicles are the customers spending more money in the store. Customers can be divided into three groups, naming “home practice”, “self-improvement”, and “family creativity” in terms of lifestyle; customers can also be divided into “price oriented”, “equipment oriented”, and “service oriented” groups; in terms of demand to be satisfied. The customers of “home practice” and “self-improvement” tend to be “equipment oriented” customers while the customers of “family creativity” tend to be “service oriented” customers. In terms of purchasing cite preference, product and service are more important factors while transportation is the least important factor. Customers can be divided into three groups, naming “product factor oriented”, “transportation oriented”, and “service factor oriented” groups in terms of purchasing cite preference. While price, promotion activities, and parking are the most important issues for the product, service, and transportation factors respectively, the most preferential combination of the above three factors to the customers is parking, price, and promotion.

Abstract:
碩士
國立嘉義大學
林業研究所
90
【Abstract】 In Taiwan, since the government implemented the “two-days-off a week” policy in 2001, people had much more leisure time. People favor the natural quality of wood floor. DIY is accepted by more and more around the world. The objectives of this study were to explore information about consumer behavior for DIY wood floor in Southern Taiwan which is collected through questionnaire and personal interviews with buyers at B&Q. The number of questionnaires to be sent out is 1130, but 1089 questionnaires left effectively. The sampling areas were Kaohsiung, Tainan and Chaiyi respectively. Information to buy DIY products about the consumers showed that:(1) The man are more inclinable than the woman(51.2%).(2)The age class is 21~40 mostly(70.6%). (3)The education level record of formal schooling are middle-high and above(70.5%).(4)The major working fields are attendants(25.8%), workers(15.7%), government employees and teachers(13.3%).(5)The revenue level class is 30001~50000 NT dollars per month(32.1%). By way of factor analysis, there are six factors as follows: (1)Characteristics of wood floor products;(2)Maintenance of wood floor products;(3)Superiority of wood floor products;(4)Pattern of wood floor;(5)The construction of wood floor;(6)Conception of health. In the purchasing process, the motivation is to raise the quality of environment at home. In Kaohsiung, people ponder more much than Tainan and Chaiyi. Mostly the people compare among stores, however it is important of recommendation of friends and relatives. In the project assessment, it is very important to permanence, safety, easiness to work, obviousness of operation instruction and postsale service. There are five factors to be analyzed for consumer satisfaction. In the personal interviews with buyers at B&Q, the man and the married man are satisfied with wood floor. The age group is between 21~40 , who are satisfied with manipulation, booklet to be read clearly and price. It is not notable on the level of education. Those who are attendants, workers and government employees and teachers are satisfied with the repair of wood flooring. Although people favor to use DIY wood floor , it is too expensive and suspicious of its quality. Most of the users accept DIY wood floor and are highly satisfied. Sales promotion must be carried out with DIY wood floor. The sales will be promoted by adopting discount at regular or erratic date and to increase the quality of wood floors.
