Abstract:
Postwar American film noir explores an artificial world that does not foster human happiness and growth, but leads to a kind of human incapacity to act and respond. Beyond merely depicting these negative environments, noir lays bare the attachments to bad living and unsustainable striving that underwrite the accumulating culture of the Anthropocene at midcentury. Positioning itself as the genre that critiques postwar peaceful prosperity, noir gives us the characters, places, and scripts for human expiration as the counter to both nuclear survivalism and consumer capitalism. The hospitality of

Abstract:
This chapter examines the racial contradictions engendered by the presence of African American musicians in Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past (1947) and Fritz Lang's The Blue Gardenia (1953). The title song in The Blue Gardenia sheds light on a problem common to Tourneur's and Lang's film: the subtextual association of black musical performance with the dark side of the human psyche. In other words, if the Harlem jazz scene in Out of the Past presages the materialization of the “black widow,” Kathie Moffat (Jane Greer), Nat King Cole's rendition of “Blue Gardenia” musically implicates the “wr

Abstract:
Most of us are far from perfect in virtue. Faced with this fact, moral philosophers can respond in two different ways. On the one hand they might insist that the only real virtue is perfect virtue, and the only right actions are perfectly virtuous ones. Any failure to meet the exacting standards of perfect virtue will amount to vice, and any less than perfectly virtuous actions will be wrong. On the other hand, and if they reject such a rigorist picture, they can instead affirm that there are actions that are truly good and right even if they fall short of perfection. This book urges the attra

Abstract:
This chapter argues that, assuming that law is a kind of artifact (which is a reasonable assumption, when one excludes that it is a natural kind), it is interesting to inquire into the particular features of it. Indeed it is a strange kind of artifact, for it has a set of properties that are quite different from those of everyday artifacts such as tables and chairs. First, law is not a material artifact (as a table) but an intellectual one. Second, it is different from other intellectual artifacts (as poems) because it is normative. Third, it is different from an individual creation because it
