Abstract:
This thesis presents a descriptive and analytical study of Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu. Essentially, this is a study about caste and the role that it plays in Newar life, in particular, the way that caste is expressed through marriage patterns and kinship rituals. This study also shows that although the link between one's caste and one's traditional caste occupation is breaking down, one's caste identity is still maintained through one's choice of marriage partner and one's participation in kinship rituals which occur at the various levels of caste organization. Silozi, the language of the Malozi people in Zambia and Namibia is a mixed language that has been the subject of a classification debate between scholars. Doke (1943) classifies Silozi in the same zone as Sesotho languages due to linguistic similarities. Guthrie (1948) in contrast, classify it independently because of its geographic location. Therefore, this study analyses and describes the mixed character of Silozi with focus on two areas. Firstly, the noun class system of Silozi is compared to those of Sesotho and the neighbouring languages to identify the origins of Silozi's noun classes. S

Patterns of water resource management are affected by the social structures of indigenous societies. The social structures of many indigenous groups, and in particular tribal groups, are kin-based. Water resource development projects which focus on kin-based societies may be affected by the characteristics of a society's kinship system. Three case studies of irrigating tribal societies were analyzed to determine the effects of kinship systems on water management. Results of the analysis indicate that in these societies water management was conducted under the auspices of kinship systems and ac

Kinship and marriage systems represent the ways in which humans organize relatedness and reproduction. The work presented in this thesis extends the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological foundations of evolutionary biology to the study of these aspects of human social behaviour. Firstly, a game-theoretic analysis shows that the evolution of monogamous marriage can be understood within the framework of inclusive fitness theory. In this framework, the stability of monogamous marriage requires that men transfer property to their wife's offspring; consistently, the log-linear analysis of

Because behaviour leaves no fossil evidence researchers have focused on how social systems help animals and humans adapt to their current environments and have only been able to make tentative suggestions about how such systems may have evolved. However, a new theoretical framework, based on Darwin’s insights, allows phylogenetic relatedness to be incorporated into comparative analyses to discover the ancestral states of social behaviour and the ultimate drivers of change in hum
