Abstract:
Abstract During 1916 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner created a group of landscape paintings, based on his experiences at the Kohnstamm Sanatorium in Königstein, which were more symbolic in character than his previous landscapes. This essay shows that contact with Carl and Thea Sternheim, who encouraged a reengagement with Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and letters, played a role in this change. Kirchner’s recognition of how Van Gogh could express an affect through his painting was reinforced by Dr. Kohnstamm’s writings about empathy’s role in artistic expression. Artistic practice and aesthetic theory were joined in representations of Jena done during Fall 1916 in which Kirchner transformed the landscape through formal means into symbols of his emotional relationship to that space.

Rogge, Kathryn. "Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938): Early Female Nudes in Landscapes." VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/158.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how Ernst Ludwig Kirchner reconceived the female nude within the two contexts of Expressionism and the German nudist movement. In particular, it looks to Kirchner’s early paintings, executed between 1909 and 1914, of female nudes in landscape settings to determine how Kirchner operated within and departed from the conventions of the female nude. This thesis challenges the feminist critique of Expressionist painting and Kirchner’s female nudes. It also examines how Kirchner’s female nudes in landscapes are complicated by the early twentieth-century development of German nudism. While these paintings are often categorized as bathers following nineteenth-century French precedent, they in fact are unique products of die Brücke philosophy.

Abstract:
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was one of the major visual artists of the avant-garde in Germany in the first half of the twentieth century and is regarded as a cornerstone of first-generation Expressionism. Raised in a conservative Protestant family in provincial Chemnitz, he rejected the ideals and morality of his educated bourgeois upbringing and chose the bohemian life of a modern artist. As a young architecture student at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden (1901–5), Kirchner mastered naturalistic rendering, perspectival drawing, and colour theory. In his Expressionist work he exploited these skills while simultaneously challenging their necessity for modern representation.
