Abstract:
Abstract This research was carried out to evaluate the phenolic composition, antioxidant capacities, sugars and organic acids content of sweet cherry cultivars (Bianca, Burlat, Johanna 1, Johanna 2, Kordia, Kunzes Kirsche, Merton Premier, Napoleon, Orleans, Regina, Rivan, Schneiders Spate Knorpelkirsche, Summit, Trebnitzer Lotkirsche) grown in Poland. Significant differences were observed between tested cultivars for all studied parameters. The sum of total soluble solids ranged from 14.3 (‘Burlat’) to 20.9 g 100 g−1 FW (‘Bianca’) and that of organic acids from 0.43 (‘Burlat’) to 0.76 g 100 g−1 FW (‘Napoleon’). Fruit of Bianca cultivar showed the highest levels of anthocyanin (108.5 mg 100 g−1 FW) while ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Kunzes Kirsche’ contained the lowest levels (1.5 and 1.8 mg 100 g−1 FW, respectively). Total phenolic contents ranged from 101 (‘Napoleon’) to 558 (‘Bianca’) mg 100 g−1 FW, tartaric esters from 26.2 (‘Summit’) to 66.5 (‘Bianca’) mg 100 g−1 FW and flavonoids from 7.9 (‘Summit’) to 49.1 (‘Bianca’) mg 100 g−1 FW. Bianca cultivar has also the highest free radical scavenging activity assayed by ABTS and DPPH methods 88 and 90% respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract Olga Kirsch’s life and work was dominated by three men: her father Schmuel M. Kirsch, her youth lover Ellis, and her husband Joseph Gillis. Their presence can be felt throughout her oeuvre, both in her published Afrikaans and in her unpublished English poetry culminating in a collection of seventy-seven poems written in the months that followed the death of her husband. Through these poems the reader is introduced to a passionate side of Kirsch’s personality that was rarely seen by those who knew her in the normal course of her life. These three relationships resulted in some of Kirsch’s most beautiful poetry, of which her “Vyf sonnette vir my vader” is probably the best known.

Abstract:
Sweet cherry breeding programs are interested in developing new cultivars that are very early or very late in ripening, high yielding, with excellent fruit size and quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate new, promising, sweet cherry genotypes (G-1 and G-2) for ripening time, fruit morphology and fruit chemical content, and compare it with the standard sweet cherry cultivars (Bigarreau Jaboulay, B. H. Burlat, Seneca, Hedelfiger Riesenkirsche, Germersdorfer Grosse Kirsche, Emperor Francis and Bing). Experiment was done during four consecutive years (2006-2009) in Grocka, near Belgrade. The earliest fruit ripening was recorded in G-2 (22nd April) while the latest in `Bing` (2nd June). Fruit weight varied from 5.83 g (G-2) up to 8.93 g (G-1). Soluble solid content and total sugar content were the lowest in genotype G-2 (10.48%; 8.45%, respectively) but the highest in Emperor Francis (18.28%; 15.98%, respectively). No matter the fact that some standard cultivars showed better results for some traits, genotypes G-1 and G-2 are considered very promising. So, genotype G-1 could be intended for table consumption since it ripens 2-3 days after cv. B. H. Burlat, but have much higher fruit weight. Also, genotype G-2, the earliest in this trial, showed satisfactory fruit weight for this ripening time, which makes it very interesting for fresh market production.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Spectral measurements on plants have already been introduced in practice through extensive research and through the recent increase in the availability of low-cost devices. It can be expected that optical sensor systems may contribute to an economic and sustainable use of natural resources as a part of the concept for precision horticulture. In terms of phytomonitoring approaches, such technologies which address variable amounts of individual chromophoric plant components become more important. Their wavelength-selective light absorption makes pigments specifically responsive to reflection or transmission recordings in the ultraviolet and visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Additionally, pigments serve as indicators for physiological stages of leaf and fruit. Consequently, the instrumental recording of variable pigment contents has high potential with regards to dynamic plant-adapted processes during the production of fruit and vegetables. Solving the known issues of non-destructive spectroscopy, a new approach was figured out in the present work to obtain a more precise analysis of individual pigment contents, which vary during the cultivation of horticultural crops. The tool is based on an iterative algorithm (iMLR), that separates coinciding in-situ and in-vitro spectra from sum signals of individual pigments. Finally, the algorithm was integrated into a stand-alone application containing a library of chlorophyll a and b, as well as signatures of lycopene, β-carotene, α-carotene, lutein and violaxanthin. It can be pointed out that individual pigment compositions are suitable indicators of the physiological stage of horticultural products. However, the spectral analysis of single pigment levels is challenging due to complex interactions of coinciding absorption and diffuse light scattering in natural pigment mixtures or in fruit extracts. From this, an improved method for the reliable decomposition of spectral signals was developed.

Abstract:
This study advances design and manufacturing of the tip geometry of the Kirschner wire (K-wire) — a popular orthopedic drilling tool with a sharp, three-sided trocar point — for improved bone drilling efficiency. Since there is no active cutting edge as there is for twist drill bits, bone drilling forces can be so large as to cause excessive heat generation and tool wear. Our modified K-wire consists of three slots at the tip to enhance cutting and chip (bone debris) evacuation. A finite element model was developed to simulate bone debris generation, thus predicting the improvement by the slot design. An experimental study was conducted to validate the model and ascertain actual drilling performance. During 5 mm drilling the maximum thrust force and torque were both reduced on average by 30–40% based on the experimental data. The overall trends of both force and torque agree with the model-predicted results.
