Abstract:
Fluid-fluid interfacial area plays an important role for mass- and energy-transfer processes across the interface which is relevant in several hydrogeological and engineering applications, e.g. enhanced oil-gas recovery, CO2 storage in geological formations, unconventional geothermal systems, contaminant removal, etc. Kinetic interface sensitive tracers were designed to determine the size of the interface between two fluids by undergoing hydrolysis at the fluid-fluid interface. This study investigates by means of numerical modelling the influence of heterogeneity on the KIS tracer breakthrough

Abstract:
This chapter explains the motivations for researching the social history of the drum kit. It traces the history of drummer jokes and outlines the structure of the chapters to follow. Chapter 1 traces the racist roots of linking drummers to primitive stereotypes and contrasts this against the cleverness of drummers that culminated in the invention of the drum. Chapter 2 shows how drummers in fact contributed to redefining the boundaries between noise and music. Chapter 3 reveals how drummers developed new conventions of literacy while standardizing both the components and performance practice of their instrument. Chapter 4 examines the development of the status of drummers as creative artists. Chapter 5 looks at drumming as a form of musical labour. Chapter 6 considers attempts to replace the drum kit and drummers with new technologies, and how such efforts ultimately underscored the centrality of the drum kit as part of the contemporary soundscape.

Trailer parks serve African American families primarily as places to live. Social lives take place among large, close-knit kin networks, or in churches also attended by relatives. Kin importantly provide access to employment or income supports in times of need. In contrast to the integrated contexts of their trailer park, where they attend school, or work, park families experience a segregated world, amongst their church and kin networks. Park parents have large sibling sets, a source of rich supports and resources. Lacking such support a family struggles, but alternatively form fictive kinship ties with people from church or friendship networks.

This book concludes where it opened, on the Northern Front of Wabanaki, where the war, and the negotiation of peace, continued long past the summer of 1676. This chapter focuses on a wave of raids that began on the Wabanaki coast, on the same day that Metacom was killed, as well as the efforts of multiple Penacook and Abenaki leaders to end the conflict through diplomacy. It highlights the complex context behind the “surprisal” at Cocheco, involving New Hampshire trader Richard Waldron, and explores the response of Indigenous leaders on the Kennebec River. The chapter concludes with the little-known treaties of Pemaquid and Casco Bay in 1677 and 1678, exploring a wide map of Indigenous communication, diplomacy, and alliance. This wider map also enables acknowledgment of the role of the colonies of New York and New France in both diplomacy and war.

Chapter 2 situates the study historically in the context of U.S. and Mexican migration and traces the formation of the street vending economy in urban centers in México and in U.S. cities such as Los Angeles and New York. The chapter demonstrates that street vending across the border is linked to macro structural forces and is not solely derivative of Latinx cultural practices. The chapter also highlights the historical precedent of street vending in the United States, as opposed to portraying the work as a direct cultural transplant from Latin America. The Latinx street vendors in Los Angeles immigrated to a society where street vending had been an economic strategy since the early nineteenth century. The chapter notes that as a result of both political turmoil and the rise of a foodie culture based on “authenticity,” attitudes toward street vendors are becoming more sympathetic and respectful, leading to the decriminalization of street vending across the state of California.

Abstract:
The lateral stability of the continuous welded rail (CWR) depends on a number of parameters which contribute to the progressive loss of the initial alignment of the track and its consequent predisposition to deform sideways, gradually or sharply, with serious risks for the safety both of passengers and operators. Different types of initial lateral defect, in terms of shape and size, are introduced by many authors in their own numerical and analytical model, but essentially all of them can be traced back — except for small “personalizations” — to the model proposed by Andrew Kish, who hypothesi

Rapid advances in technology-communications, the internet, tele-marketing, travel, etc. are accelerating the globalization of the world’s market places. To facilitate this globalization by eliminating measurement-based barriers to trade, the International Committee on Weights and Measures (CIPM) has, in accord with the authority granted it by the International Treaty of the Meter, produced a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). This MRA, signed into existence in Oct 1999, has the objectives: 1. to establish the degree of equivalence of national measurement standards maintained by the National

Abstract:
Local and regional planners struggle to keep up with rapid changes in mobility patterns. This exploratory research is framed with the overarching goal of asking if and how geo-social network data (GSND), in this case, Twitter data, can be used to understand and explain commuting and non-commuting travel patterns. The research project set out to determine whether GSND may be used to augment US Census LODES data beyond commuting trips and whether it may serve as a short-term substitute for commuting trips. It turns out that the reverse is true and the common practice of employing LODES data to e
