Full textThe modern architecture is affected by glass facades and novel glass structures. Therein glass is not only used as space enclosing element, rather it finds more and more constructive application and it is increasingly involved in load transfer. State of the art for the integration of glass elements in buildings are mechanically designed point and linear fixings. But they may cause local stresses followed by glass breakage. An alternative to these fixations are adhesive joints which more respect the specific requirements of the fragile material glass. A wide variety of adhesives is already available for this purpose. For strong adhesive joints not only the selection of a suitable adhesive is essential. The surface quality, which can be enhanced by surface treatments, is just as important for a very good adhesion. Due to the long life expectancy of buildings, a permanently aging resistance of the adhesive joints is necessary. For that, a formation of the highest possible adhesion forces between adhesive polymer and adherend surface is essential. Special surface treatment processes ensure a better wettability of the surfaces and also create energetically active sites that can interact with the adhesive molecules. However, many of the industrially established surface pretreatments, especially those for metallic materials, are not sustainable, since these methods often use corrosive, highly toxic and environmentally hazardous substances. This is the basis of the present dissertation. In various industries, such as automotive, electrical engineering and dentistry, newly developed surface treatment methods based on plasma and deposition technologies are already used. This raises the question of the applicability of such methods on materials for glass constructions and of their benefit to the optimization of structural adhesive joints. The effect of four different surface treatment methods used on the surfaces of stainless steel, aluminum, brass and toughened safety glass made from soda-lime glass is investigated in experimental studies. Physical and chemical surface analyses are performed before and after the applications. In addition, the adhesion properties of bonded specimens with pretreated surfaces are examined before and after aging. The influence of the surface conditions on the strength of the adhesive joints is determined from the obtained results. The results show very different effects of the individual surface treatment methods with high dependences on substrate and adhesive. With regard to an increase of adhesion strength, a good aging resistance, an uncomplicated integration into automated production processes and an avoidance of changing the optical surface properties, the investigated combustion chemical vapour deposition is the most suitable method. With this pretreatment, a dense silicate layer is deposite on the surface. Its high chemical activity and its complete wettability offer the best conditions for bonding a variety of materials with different adhesives

Full textThe use of glass beams in transparent roofs and glass fins as part of the facade is already state-of-the-art construction to achieve a transparent and lightweight appearance. Until now, mechanical fasteners made from stainless steel are used to join these structural components. Those fasteners visually interfere, require holes in the glass and cause unfavorable stress peaks in the glass. In contrast, adhesive bonding is much more appropriate to join the brittle material glass. The subject of this dissertation is the study of a planar adhesive joint which transfers the load between the load-bearing glass components into the primary structure. With a relatively large layer thickness, the manufacturing of the transparent joint represents a major challenge. Furthermore, the aging resistance and the load-bearing capacity must be proven. A selection of 14 potentially suitable, transparent adhesives of acrylate, epoxy resin and polyurethane are tested for temperature-depending material properties. These tests are based on thermo-mechanical and mechanical test methods. In addition, the long-term durability of the adhesives is verified by artificial aging test on bonded specimens. Subsequently, the photometric characteristics and the visual quality of the samples are assessed. As the result an UV- and light-curing acrylate adhesive is identified as particularly suitable. Compression shear tests under temperature and aging influences as well as creep tests are performed on substance samples and small-scale specimens to determine the adhesive strength of this adhesive. A suitable application and curing process is developed for use in planar bonded joints. Tests on specimen components were carried out to determine the load-bearing capacity of the bonded glass frame corners. In these experiments, the glass fails while the adhesive joint remains intact. Creep test are used to record the creep deformation of component specimen at increased temperature. Accompanying the study, several building projects are realized to use adhesive bonding technology in all-glass constructions. Without any visible forms of connection, the glass construction represents a significant innovation in Germany in terms of both building legislation and building technology. It´s the first time, glass fins and glass beams are joint to a glass primary structural system via transparent acrylate adhesive. The connection method is based on the findings of the present study. The glass panels of the envelope are joined to the primary glass structure with an approved silicone adhesive. Two of the described construction projects are monitored to obtain further knowledge about the long-term behaviour of the bonded joints. The comprehensive studies of this thesis as well as the ongoing monitoring have proven the significance and the reliability of transparent, load-bearing bonded joints in the field of glass construction

Full textThis doctoral thesis analyses load-bearing adhesives in glass constructions which are permanently immersed in fluid environments. In particular, the study focuses on the following key questions: How do structural adhesives behave during permanent fluid immersion? Does the failure mode during fluid exposition differ between static and dynamic load situations? And what are the effects of short- and long-term load durations on adhesive properties? In order to answer the stated research questions, experimental studies are executed. Additional numerical simulations accompany the entire test program. The paper distinguishes experimental studies on small-scale specimens and full-scale specimens. Initial tensile tests on small-scale specimens analyse the mechanical properties and their sensitivity towards ageing mediums. The test series evaluates the adhesive properties to glass under the influence of am-bient temperatures and liquid ageing mediums like water, base and acid solution as well as hydroxide peroxide solution. The small-scale tests also consider long-term creep tests and mechanical-cycle loading. The gathered results are evaluated against a set of selection criteria to identify the most suitable adhesive system out of the range of initially ten tested adhesive systems. Finally, the preferred adhesive system is applied on a full-scale reference example, which is a flat plate photobioreactor. Two photobioreactor panels with a height of 3,00 m are assembled and tested. The panel is part of a bioenergy facade that cultivates microalgae in the building skin. In general, the photobioreactor panel resembles an insulating glass unit. Deviating from conventional glazing systems its front and back glass panes are joint by inner structural adhesives. Since the panel is filled with algae medium its adhesive connections are immersed in liquid algae medium. In summary, the doctoral thesis deepens the current knowledge on adhesives in glass constructions under permanent fluid exposition. Research findings are applied on two operating photobioreactors made of glass. And finally, the gained results are promising for future glass construc-tions facing permanent fluid exposition.:1 Einleitung 2 Bioenergiefassaden 3 Beanspruchungsanalyse 4 Versuchsplanung 5 Kleinteilprüfungen 6 Bauteilprüfungen 7 Berechnung und Dimensionierung 8 Diskussion 9 Zusammenfassung und Ausblick 10 Literatur
