Abstract:
AbstractAstronomy in Prague has long been associated with Charles University, since its founding in 1348. After a long and complicated history, “The State Observatory” was established in the former Jesuit college of Klementinum. The polar height was measured at this location in the last century, during the periods 1889 – 1892, 1895 – 1899 and 1900 – 1904. The observations were made by Gerstner, Laska, Spitaler and others, under the leadership of Prof. Lad. Weinek. The measurements were performed with a transit instrument. The inspection was made in the Archive of Academy of Sciences, where practically all the observations are still preserved.

Abstract:
The tree-ring width and the maximum wood density of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) have been examined in order to reconstruct air temperature of the summer half-year during the period 1804 - 1989. The trees examined come from a natural spruce stand of Labský důl (Elbe Valley) in Krkonoše (Giant Mts.), North Bohemia. The results obtained by this way have been compared with a similar reconstruction made for Central Europe and with air temperature records from the Prague-Klementinum station. Both temperature series (reconstructed and measured), however, show only 36 % of commonly clarified variability. Differences may follow from the standardization of dendrochronologies as well as from other factors which may have influenced the growth of spruce. The quality of air temperature measurement may play also role.

Abstract:
Extremely cold/mild winters (DJF) and extremely cold/warm summers (JJA) in the Czech Lands were derived from series of temperature indices based on documentary evidence (1500–1854) and from series of air temperatures measured at the Prague-Klementinum station (1771–2007) over the past 500 years. Altogether 24 cold winters, 23 mild winters, 18 cold summers and 21 warm summers emerged. Czech extremes were compared with the Central European temperature series and series of documentary-based temperature indices for the Low Countries, Germany and Switzerland. Analysis of composite sea level pressure fields confirms advection of cold air from the north-west (extremely cold summers) or from the east (extremely cold winters). Mild winters are related to warm airflow from the west or south-west and extremely warm summers to the influence of high pressure related to the Azores High. Spatial correlations of extremes for winters proved better than for summers. We demonstrate that documentary evidence explains temperature variability for winter better than it does for the other seasons.

Abstract:
Abstract. The eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815 was one of the most powerful of its kind in recorded history. This contribution addresses climatic responses to it, the post-eruption weather, and its impacts on human life in the Czech Lands. The climatic effects are evaluated in terms of air temperature and precipitation on the basis of long-term homogenised series from the Prague-Klementinum and Brno meteorological stations, and mean Czech series in the short term (1810–1820) and long term (1800–2010). This analysis is complemented by other climatic and environmental data derived from rich documentary evidence. Czech documentary sources make no direct mention of the Tambora eruption, neither do they relate any particular weather phenomena to it, but they record an extremely wet summer for 1815 and an extremely cold summer for 1816 (the "Year Without a Summer") that contributed to bad grain harvests and widespread grain price increases in 1817. Possible reasons for the cold summers in the first decade of the 19th century reflected in the contemporary press included comets, sunspot activity, long-term cooling and finally – as late as 1817 – earthquakes with volcanic eruptions.

Abstract:

Abstract. The developments of the latest technology in the field of Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) are revolutionizing the methods of surveying, representing and managing the built heritage. The integrated use of 3D survey instruments such as laser scanning, digital photogrammetry and the new holistic way to represent the architecture, based on the Building Information Modeling (BIM), allows the collection, analysis and archiving of a large amount of data, by increasing information sharing among a great number of experts involved during the life cycle of the building. The paper focuses on the connection between Italy and Czech in terms of vaults patterns and construction techniques. The two case studies are the frame vault of the chapel of the Italian Cultural Institute and the barrel vault with lunettes of the Klementinum Baroque Library. They are both unique examples of the great expertise of architects and craftsmen that worked in Bohemia across the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of them were from the North of Italy, like the ones that worked in the building sites of the two case studies. The in-depth study of the construction techniques and the complex shapes needs the use of new scan-to-BIM modeling requirements, based on the definition of geometric primitives useful for the generation of intelligent three-dimensional models able to integrate different types of data. Finally, the acquired data are included in a database that collects information coming from both Italian and Czech studies, raising awareness among citizens of the richness of their built heritage.

Tomšů, Radek. "Analýza denních minimálních a maximálních teplot vzduchu na stanici Praha-Klementinum." Master's thesis, 2007. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-288435.

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term and continuous air temperature measurements at Prague-Klementinum (regular time observations are carried out since 1775, maximum and minimum air temperatures have been measured since 1881) are suitable for the analysis of possible climate changes. While researching the temperature extremes at this station, the increased occurrence of records of daily maximum air temperatures was documented in the second half of the 20th century, especially in the last 20 years, which is not connected to forcing Prague's urban heat island. There is a very rare occurrence of records of daily minimum air temperatures in the last 50 years, which is probably connected to forcing Prague's urban heat island, but also to the warming in the last decades. The change in the circulation is probably only a partial reason for high frequency of records of daily maximum air temperatures. There is warming about 1 řC by maximum air temperatures between periods 1961-83 a 1984-2006 in every season, except autumn. There is average warming about 0,5 řC by minimum air temperatures between periods 1961-83 a 1984-2006.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis Archaeozoology Klementinum in Prague studies the archaeozoological remains from the Klementinum in Prague dated between the late 11th and 15th century. The work is divided into two parts - the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part focuses on the economic background of the medieval city and nutrition of its inhabitants. Other chapters focus on the historical context of Klementinum and characteristics of the archaeological research, which took place on its territory in 2012 - 2014. The research consists of material and methods and subsequent evaluation of the obtained data, which are discussed and compared with literature. The aim of this diploma thesis is to bring interpretation of human diet of people whom lived at the site of today's Klementinum in Prague, in different time periods (from the beginning of the peak to the late Middle Ages) through the analysis of animal bones. In conclusion this diploma thesis found the economic base of the territory and which animals have been consumed on the site. In different periods was observed increasing richness of species for documented animals. Also there was discussed the impact of arrival of the Dominican convent on the breding economy after a year 1232nd.

Abstract:
PhDr. Kateřina Průšová Book as a Jewel, Francoflemish Books of Hours from the National Library in Prague Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to present the first comprehensive catalogue of Franco-Flemish books of hours from the collections of the National Library in Prague (hereafter, NK). Some of the included manuscripts were already published in journals some of them have never been published previously. The core of the catalogue is a formal and stylistic analysis of books of hours, including an attribution to the individual masters and workshops, localization and dating based on a comparison of stylistically related manuscripts. This work is a development from previous my research done on Parisian books of hours [NK Břevnov 297, NK Osek 70 and NK XXIII G 89; Master's thesis and 'rigorous work']. Six books of hours come from the National Library in Prague [NK XXIII H 22, NK Břevnov 296, NK XXIII F 198, NK XXIII G88, NK Osek 65, NK VI D 25] and one manuscript in the collection of the Lobkowicz family at Nelahozeves castle, previously deposited in the Prague National Library [with a shelf- mark VI Fg 67]. The catalogue covers the period of the greatest flowering of Flemish book illumination from the first half of the 15th century to the beginning of the 16th century. The books of hours from the...

Disertační práce proto přináší kompletní přehled Machoňovy tvorby a jejích stylových proměn.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to our knowledge of the early (modern) Bohemian musical culture by tracing the musical production and activities at the Jesuit Clementinum college in Prague from its foundation in 1556 to the establishment of the autonomous Bohemian Province in 1623. This analysis draws on original Jesuit archival documents (diaria / diaries, memorial books, catalogi personarum / personnel catalogues, litterae annuae / annual letters, historiographical works of the period) and wider primary sources, which the author interprets within broader socio-cultural and historical realms. Authentic testimonies written in Latin that document musical activities in the Clementinum and the relationship of Prague Jesuits with music are included in the footnotes or in appendices. Individual chapters seek to illustrate (illustrare) and assess (recensere) the materials investigated from the following points of view: 1) institutional (Order, College, associated sodalities); 2) environmental acoustics (broader sound production within the spaces of the College and the rest of the city); 3) prosopographical (music prefects of the College and of the Marian Congregation); 4) surviving musical sources; 5) ceremonies with musical components (liturgical and paraliturgical ceremonies, graduations, congregational...
