Abstract:
The purpose of the following research is the improvement of the shooting by establishing the level of proficiency of this element. The subject of the research is the proficiency of the technical elements – shooting a layup and a jump shot under the basket. In the study took part 24 female basketball students from the university basketball team of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The methods which were used are anthropometry and sport-pedagogy experiment. The tests are made on a field. The results are calculated through а variation analysis. The analysis of the results shows that the basketball probation of the female students before entering the SU “St. Kliment Ohridski” is =7,38±2,95 year with ratio of variation V=8,68%. The middle age of the female students is 20,67±1,37 year with V=1,88%, height =172±6,799 cm, with V=46,32%, and the body mass index is = 64,79±8,74 cm, с V=76,433%. BMI shows that =22,17±2,63 with V=6,93%. On a layup the results show equality based on the made shots - = 11,08±1,28 number of shots with ratio of variation V=1,65%. Number of attempt shots =11,83±0,82 number of shots with V=0,67%. Made layup shots for 60 s are =26 04±5,32 number of made shots V=28,30%, and the number of attempt shots show =30,83±3,92 с V=15,32%. The university women team of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has a shooting percentage of 93,58%, of the layups, which puts the team on the highest level – “master-shooter”. The shooting percentage of the jump shots under the basket is 84, 04%, which puts the team on the level – “expert-shooter”.

Prof. Yordan Zaimov, DSc, is born on 23rd of April 1921 in Sofia. He graduated Slavic Philology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1944. He has the opportunity to be taught by some of the most prominent scholars. His brilliant linguistic knowledge (he spoke eight languages) will be the basis for his future notable success in some of the most difficult scientific fields such as etymology, onomastics, and diachronic linguistics. All his activities are connected completely with the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Significant moments from his life, dedicated to knowledge, are going to be presented as well as from his multidisciplinary work.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of the measurements made on the physical development of students who have chosen basketball as a compulsory discipline. The measurements include height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). All participants in the study are students from Sofia University, a regular form of education. Students are in age between 18 and 26, from different faculties and disciplines. The results are based on gender and age. Two measurements were made-Test 1 and Test 2 (T1 and T2). According to the results of BMI, the students are divided into four categories: “healthy range”, “lower than healthy”, “overweight” and “obesity”. According to the results obtained in BMI calculation, it was found that in T1 for women and men 66.2 % of the students were in a “healthy range”, ranked on the index of obesity. In T2 the percentage increased to 68.8%. 14.3 % of the students have “lower than healthy” weight. For women this percentage is higher-18.2% compared to men 11.4 %.

Abstract:
Training is a two-way process of pedagogical interaction. The quality of the final result depends not only on the teacher, but also on the academic motivation of students participating as equal partners in the educational process. The PURPOSE of this article is to represent the results from a study aimed at establishing the degree of academic motivation of students. Total of 45 participants (of which 26 male and 19 female students) were questioned. All of them were in the second and third year of their bachelor study in the specialty Physical Education and Sport at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. METHODS: As an instrument is used Angel Velichkov’s questionnaire for evaluation of the level of academic motivation in which are set the factors that favour or impede the formation of high academic motivation and also allows to trace its development. RESULTS: Results are aimed at proving the hypotheses. We assume that the students in Physical Education and Sport specialty should have: 1) an active attitude towards the learning process; 2) internal self-discipline and 3) a striving to complete and extend the knowledge obtained. The analysis will be comparative, based on the gender and year of study which will allow us to determine whether these two criteria also influence the degree of academic motivation. CONCLUSION: The establishment of differences in the levels on these three criteria and the overall level of the students’ academic motivation will enable teachers to optimize the teaching process and make it more personal-oriented.

[Rev. of: Gradinarova Alla A., Essays on the Comparative Syntax of Bulgarian and Russian, Sofia: Iztok-Zapad, 2017, 500 pp.] This article presents a review of the book by a major Bulgarian researcher of Russian, professor of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Alla Gradinarova, whose scholarly interests focus mainly on the contrastive syntax of Bulgarian and Russian. In the new monograph, the author concentrates largely on the points of divergence in these languages stemming from their typological differences: passive voice and syntactic impersonality, word order, communicatively marked phrasal templates, various types of multi-clause structures ranging from verbal adverb phrases to complex and asyndetic sentences, etc. The contrastive analysis of the language data helps to reveal significant characteristics of the studied phenomena. This allows the use of the obtained results and data not only in typology and contrastive linguistics, but also in the study of the Russian language, as the approach of the author in her studies is based on a profound analysis of Russian data. The book constitutes a major contribution to studies in contrastive syntax of Slavic languages.

A cold-tolerant, yellow-pigmented, Gram-positive, motile, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, LI1T, was isolated from a moss-covered soil from Livingston Island, Antarctica, near the Bulgarian station St. Kliment Ohridski. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis placed the strain in a clade with the species Leifsonia kafniensis KFC-22T, Leifsonia pindariensis PON10T and Leifsonia antarctica SPC-20T, with which it showed sequence similarities of 99.0, 97.9 and 97.9 %, respectively. DNA–DNA hybridization revealed a reassociation value of 2.7 % with L. kafniensis LMG 24362T. The DNA G+C content of strain LI1T was 64.5 mol%. The growth temperature range was −6 to 28 °C, with optimum growth at 16 °C. Growth occurred in 0–5 % NaCl and at pH 4.5–9.5, with optimum growth in 1–2 % NaCl and at pH 5.5–6.5. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C18 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. Physiological and biochemical tests clearly differentiated strain LI1T from L. kafniensis. Therefore, a novel cold-tolerant species within the genus Leifsonia is proposed: Leifsonia psychrotolerans sp. nov. (type strain LI1T = DSM 22824T = NCCB 100313T).

Abstract:
This report is provoked by the specific work with students from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The contingent of the study was 77 students (men and women) who chose to practice basketball in group-educated groups at the University. The report is based on the results of conducted sport-pedagogic testing that was made on field conditions. In order to determine the level of the specific conditional qualities of the students it was used the international test battery “SPARQ”, specialized for basketball players. The test battery contains eight tests: fastness, upper limb force, explosive force, strength endurance, flexibility, agility in basketball defense movement. The aim of the study is to provide information on changes in the level of the specific conditional qualities of the basketball students as a result of specialized training. The results of the study are subject to mathematical and statistical processing under SPSS – 19. The ANOVA dispersion analysis was used to test the hypothesis for comparing three or more Fisher F-criteria samples. The analysis of the result confirms that there was a significant change in the groups and a significant difference between them, with better values of the experimental groups.

Among the priorities of the 21st-century education and school, and therefore, of teachers as well, is developing students' creative skills, teaching them to take advantage of diverse information and educational resources, to find quickly new and reliable information, which they need in order to manage their learning tasks and life problems. This “navigation” through information is one of the important research skills are needed by the young citizens of the technologized, dynamic world and must be purposefully formed and developed. This means that teachers themselves have to acquire and develop these skills, and the place where this should be accomplished is the university. The aim of this article is to present the experience of the Faculty of Pedagogy at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in developing students’ research skills through assignments for self�dependent work. The paper provides an analysis of the students’ opinions included in three studies: of the University Center for Quality Management, of a research team within an intra-university project, and a survey conducted by the author. The conclusion is that, according to the students, basic university training is sufficient to develop their research and creative skills through various forms of individual and group work, in line with the skills necessary for 21st-century teachers.

Abstract:
The paper discusses several formal aspects of submitting texts to foreign academic journals and publishing houses by Bulgarian authors. It argues that common issues concerning the editing of an author’s contribution include the English translation of a Bulgarian academic institution’s name, the use of quotation marks, the hyphen, en dash and em dash, the usage of glyphs, such as the numero symbol. The article also draws attention to the various transcription styles for Cyrillic texts, as well as the inconsistent forms of patron saints and city names used by Bulgarian institutions. A comparison between the Bulgarian names of six universities, their English translations and forms appearing in Wikipedia illustrates the problem of the often incomprehensible affiliation of a Bulgarian scholar outside the country. The author’s main conclusions are as follows: (1) an urgent need for a uniform spelling of Bulgarian university names in English; (2) based on the information on their official websites, Bulgarian institutions do not have official names in English, or such names cannot be easily traced; (3) clarification of the principles for recording the names of prominent personalities and especially saints, who have long been subject of international research; (4) a need for monitoring the consistent spelling of institution names appearing on the most popular internet portals. Finally, the author suggests 8 English language versions of the name Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Abstract:
Two novel cold-tolerant, Gram-stain-positive, motile, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains, LI2T and LI3T, were isolated from moss-covered soil from Livingston Island, Antarctica, near the Bulgarian station St Kliment Ohridski. A rod–coccus cycle was observed for both strains. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed an affiliation to the genus Arthrobacter, with the highest similarity to Arthrobacter stackebrandtii and Arthrobacter psychrochitiniphilus for strain LI2T (97.8 and 97.7 % similarity to the respective type strains) and to Arthrobacter kerguelensis and Arthrobacter psychrophenolicus for strain LI3T (97.4 and 97.3 % similarity to the respective type strains). The growth temperature range was −6 to 28 °C for LI2T and −6 to 24 °C for LI3T, with an optimum at 16 °C for both strains. Growth occurred at 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl, with optimum growth at 0–1 % (w/v) for LI2T and 0.5–3 % (w/v) for LI3T. The pH range for growth was pH 4–9.5 with an optimum of pH 8 for LI2T and pH 6.5 for LI3T. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C18 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 for LI2T and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C18 : 0 for LI3T. Physiological and biochemical tests clearly differentiated strain LI2T from A. stackebrandtii and A. psychrochitiniphilus and strain LI3T from A. kerguelensis and A. psychrophenolicus. Therefore, two novel species within the genus Arthrobacter are proposed: Arthrobacter livingstonensis sp. nov. (type strain LI2T = DSM 22825T = NCCB 100314T) and Arthrobacter cryotolerans sp. nov. (type strain LI3T = DSM 22826T = NCCB 100315T).

Abstract Aim To investigate the employment, the desire to work, the work habits and preferences of the students from the pharmaceutical specialties in Bulgaria. Secondary objectives: To analyze the possibilities for employment, to assess its lawfulness, to analyze existing vicious practices, to establish the main problem in fitting together the academic learning process and the work activity. Materials and methods This was a pilot, retrospective-prospective, longitudinal survey in two centers. We developed a survey questionnaire containing 28 questions of both the open-ended and closed-ended types. The data collection was done using the “Direct individual poll” method. he target group consisted of 165 students from pharmaceutical specialties – pharmacy students from Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University “Sv. Kliment Ohridski”, and Bachelor-pharmacists from the Medical College, University “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov”, Bourgas. The data were processed with the SPSS software. Results The results are presented in two parts: the first part refers to Bachelors of Pharmacy, and the second – to Masters of Pharmacy. In their majority, the pharmacy students work during their academic studies – 86.4%. The main stimulus for starting work is of financial origin. Of all students working, 56.8% were hired on an employment contract, while up to one-third worked without any contract at all. In the case of assistant pharmacists 4 45.3% of the respondents worked, and the majority of the respondents did it for financial reasons (66.7%). 86.2% had a signed employment contract, but 67.9% were insured on the basis of the minimum salary. Most commonly the students were working in the field of their future specialty in the pharmacy network. Conclusion The students indicated difficulties in the process of combining their work activity and their studies, a negative attitude to the legal framework and easily discernible negative attitude towards the main field of fulfillment also by the Masters of Pharmacy – working in a pharmacy.

The imperative for taking action to increase physical activity is clear. No European Union country has a prevalence of overweight and obesity below 50%, and childhood obesity is a major concern throughout the continent. The European Union has long increasingly emphasized the sociological, physiological and psychological benefits of sport. The integration of sports into the universities educational curriculum in most European pedagogical systems has resulted in high levels of sport practice among the youth. However, as young people enter higher education many member-states face a problem with withdrawal in participation. At the same time in many resent researches, scientists warn that the fitness level of young generation is far from good. There are many reasons behind the low motivation of young people to participate in sport classes. The universities policy makers and sport departments can play an important role by finding new motivational engines which will make sport classes more attractive to students. “Te(a)chIn Sport” project was developed and granted by the European Commission in 2017. The project general objective is to raise awareness of the importance of health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) of young people through increased participation in sports by using innovative technologies in university sport classes. In the high-tech era, we live in today, the wearable technology market is booming. Now people are able to find all kind of information at their fingertips via smart phones, fitness activity tracers and many other devices. Especially young people find a lot of excitement in using all kind of applications for which they spend the most of their free time. The represented research is a part of “Te(a)chIn Sport” project, granted by the Erasmus + Sport Program of the European Commission, in which “St. Kliment Ohridski” University of Sofia is the leading partner. The article shows the results of a feasibility study on Sofia University’ students’ physical activity levels, their preferences and opinion about the sport classes and sport services offered at the University and the local area as well as their interest in using smart devices in sport classes. Participants were 200 Sofia University’ students (of which 122 female and 78 male in the age of 18 to 25 years) in different years of their bachelor studies in a variety of subjects. All of them enlisted in different sport classes for 2017-2018 school year. For the purposes of the study has been used the Descriptive - explicative method. For analyzing the received data, the Frequencies (f) and Percent’s (%) analyses have been applied. The results show that students do not exercise on regular bases and that the use of smart devices in sport classes will make them more attractive to young people.

Bulgaria continues to be with one of the highest mortality indicators in EU and with the lowest natural nation growth. The range of risk factors to human health are determined by the economic development of the country and by the life conditions which form risk behavioral habits such as smoking, inappropriate nutrition, alcoholism and most of all low physical activity. The low level of the physical activity has a significant contribution for the deterioration of our nation’s health status. A number of studies show that the immobilized lifestyle is widespread among all age groups in Bulgaria. This report presents data from a study on the lifestyle and the level of the physical activity of staff and lecturers of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridksi”. The results show that the majority of them lead a sedentary lifestyle. The author recommends measures, which the Authorities of the University can take to improve the health status of the employees.

Geology is part of the university from the very beginning in the area of Natural sciences. It is an example of the effective interaction between the educational processes and implementation of science, technology and innovation. The scientific activities of Sofia University have been developing along with the research priorities, lecture courses, field work and their implementation into practice.The degree programs in Geology were set up at the end of the 19th century, just 3 years after foundation of the Sofia University. The first lectures in Geology and Mineralogy dates back to 1891 when the Department for Natural History at the Sofia University started. They both form the basis of education and research in the field of Geology in Bulgaria. The main contribution in the beginning for the development of teaching and research belongs to remarkable scientists like Prof. Georgi Zlatarski, Prof. Georgi Bonchev, Prof. Stefan Bonchev, Prof. Lazar Vankov, Prof. Dimitar Yaranov and so many others. Faculty of Biology, Geology and Geography inherits the Faculty of Natural History, but is later divided.Faculty of Geology and Geography in Sofia University was formed in 1963 and till now the geology is studied in a regular form of education. There are Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees with duration of 8, 3 and 6 semesters respectively. The Bachelor Degree provides fundamental knowledge in all geological disciplines. The Master Degree covers a wide range of educational and scientific research work carried out in specialized, well-equipped laboratories for investigation of geological objects. PhD Degree is a basic form of organized training for highly qualified graduates in all spheres of geological science and practice.The teaching process in the Faculty focuses on the lectures and seminars, as well as on the individual forms of education – tasks, course and diploma thesis works, laboratory and field practices. The educational practices - stationary and field trips to certain geological, mining or economic sites are regularly held after the end of the summer semesters. Modern profile of Geology means that students obtain detailed knowledge on structure, tectonics, geological features, underground and surface processes of the Earth as well as regularities for the accumulation and distribution of ores, non-metalliferous raw materials, coal, oil and gas.The implementation of geological education into practice is supported by student membership in various society and sections. The specific activities focus student interests in organized working groups, participation in field trips and applied research. These non-profit organizations integrate in the best way geological traditions from the industry and knowledge from university into the future career development of young people. The Sofia University SEG Student Chapter supports student field trips with the idea to provide understanding of main geological characteristics of the visited geological sites and obtain specific skills of investigation and mining exploration. The Sofia University Student Chapter of AAPG actively contributes to student community growth, enriching educational culture and expanding geological expertise of its members in the field of Petroleum geology.

The importance and benefits of volunteering have long been acknowledged in the European Union. Volunteering activities contribute to strengthening some of the fundamental European values, such as solidarity and connecting with the community. It helps individuals to play a significant role in creating a more democratic, caring and responsible society. Today almost 100 million citizens of all ages make a positive contribution in the EU through an active involvement in volunteering activities in a wide range of organisations including civil society organisations, youth clubs, hospitals, schools, sport clubs and many others. Bulgaria is one of the newest members of the EU (since 2007) and is still adopting and trying to keep up with the good practices and values in the European countries. Being the biggest and oldest in Bulgaria, Sofia University educates young people from all over the country. One of the main targets of their education is to prepare them to be active, valuable and responsible citizens of the Bulgarian society as well as of the European community. The article highlights the importance of volunteering as a way to create more democratic, caring and responsible society as well as what personal benefits come with it. It also emphasizes the significance of volunteering in sport events as a way for introducing the importance of regular physical exercise for humans’ health. The article shows the results from a study aimed at exploring the experience of Sofia University’ students in volunteering, their motives to stay or become a volunteer as well as their will to volunteer in sport events. Participants were 250 university students in different years of their bachelor studies in a variety of subjects. All of them enlisted in different sport classes for the 2017-2018 academic year. For the purposes of the study has been used the Descriptive - explicative method. The results show that young people do not have much experience in volunteering and are not very well educated about all possibilities that it offers today. The author gives some recommendations for the promotion of volunteering among young people. The University could/should establish courses, where students can learn about volunteering in general and volunteering in sport. There could be motivational engines created, which will make students to be more active in volunteering. The University’s Authorities could find and provide the legal background for volunteering in its Regulations. University could make regular calls for volunteers for all of its annual events (conferences, university’s sport championships, projects and charity events). The author suggests that an additional research should be made to identify the type of events young people are interested in, in order to attract them to become volunteers as well as what are the negative sides they find in volunteering.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to drastic changes in people’s lifestyle around the world, incl. those related to the natural way in which individuals interact and communicate. The topic of virtual communication in the context of social isolation during the spread of the new corona virus strain (SARS-CoV-2) and its associated disease COVID-19 is an extremely important scientific problem with paradigmatic dimensions and fundamental consequences for society. As a technologically mediated way of communication, it proved that during a pandemic, the virtual communication is the only alternative to traditional face-to-face communication, and its use was inevitable to partially or completely overcome the social restrictions imposed. In order to examine some of the effects of virtual communication during the social isolation, an academic research team from the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at The St. Kliment Ohridsky Sofia University of Bulgaria undertook a study in the declared two month’s period (13.03.–13.05.2020) of the state of national emergency in the country. The researchers conducted a three-folded study: on the sociological polls and the media coverage during the pandemics; on the impacts of virtual communication during the social isolation; and on the activities of the telecommunication industry in Bulgaria. Abstract:
The book “A Box with Fairy Tales” includes poems by contemporary Bulgarian poets for children. It presents poets of different generations, each with their own special creative approach. Translations made by M. Yasnov embodied the idea of both unity and diversity at the same time. They bring the world of Bulgarian poetry closer to the Russian-speaking reader but maintain enough of a distance to allow the child to experience difference in message and style. The composition of the book is constructed in accordance with this idea: the poems are grouped into two parts and they follow the theme rather than a particular author. Information about the Bulgarian poets is given at the end in a form of small biographical vignettes. The themes in the book cover the timeline from early childhood to the threshold of adulthood. The book celebrates the creative legacy of the Bulgarian authors such as Z. Vasileva, V. Samuilov, M. Dalgacheva, P. Kokudeva, and I. Tsanev. Yasnov’s translations reveal a rich variety of poetic forms and language play in the original such as syntax and graphics, phonics, vocabulary that stand out on all levels of the poetic text. A particular tribute is payed to the author of the biographical articles on Bulgarian poets, Dr. G. Petkova, Sofia University of “St. Kliment Ohridsky” as well as to the artist O. Yavich for their contribution to this book.

Abstract:
The study of indirect translations (IT) into Ukrainian, viewed from a psycholinguistic perspective, will contribute to a better understanding of Soviet national policies and the post-Soviet linguistic and cultural condition. The paper pioneers a discussion of the strategies and types of IT via Russian in the domains of literature and religion. In many cases the corresponding Russian translation, which serves as a source text for the Ukrainian one, cannot be established with confidence, and the “sticking-out ears” of Russian mediation may only be monitored at the level of sentence structure, when Russian wording underlies the Ukrainian text and distorts its natural fluency. The discussion substantiates the strategies and singles out the types of IT, in particular, (1) Soviet lower-quality retranslations of the recent, and mostly high-quality, translations of literary classics, which deliberately imitated lexical, grammatical, and stylistic patterns of the Russian language (became massive in scope in the mid1930s); (2) the translation-from-crib type, or translations via the Russian interlinear version, which have been especially common in poetry after WWII, from the languages of the USSR nationalities and the socialist camp countries; (3) overt relayed translations, based on the published and intended for the audience Russian translations that can be clearly defined as the source texts for the IT into Ukrainian; this phenomenon may be best illustrated with Patriarch Filaret Version of the Holy Scripture, translated from the Russian Synodal Bible (the translation started in the early 1970s); and, finally, (4) later Soviet (from the mid1950s) and post-Soviet (during Independence period) hidden relayed translations of literary works, which have been declared as direct ones but in fact appeared in print shortly after the publication of the respective works in Russian translation and mirrored Russian lexical and stylistic patterns. Abstract:
The investigation conducted was dialed to quantitative and qualitative evaluation of 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Potentially Toxic Elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Cr) is soils and cryoconites on “St. Kliment Ohridski” Antarctic station territory and its vicinities. Estimation of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP)–equivalents, PAHs and different PAHs isomer pair ratios were used for identification of general toxicity, nature and origin of individual PAHs and their groups. Total concentrations of PAHs in BaP–equivalents showed, that ∑15PAH of all selected points was higher than the threshold concentration (20 μg × kg−1–Russian environmental legislation) for benzo(a)pyrene. Different PAHs isomer ratios showed the natural (petrogenic) source of PAHs at all soils examples (except Cryosol Toxic Transportic). The maximum content among potentially toxic elements was recorded for Zn (75.7 mg × kg−1 at L26), the minimum for Cd (0.201 mg × kg−1 at L1A). Average concentrations of potentially toxic elements are generally lower compared to the results of previous studies. Application of Igeo index, characterizes the majority of the studied soils as unpolluted or practically unpolluted. Data obtained indicates that there is no current critical anthropogenic load on the environmental components of the landscapes investigated.

Abstract:
The singing cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) of Bulgaria were poorly known. There are published records for 14 species: Cicada orni, Lyristes plebejus, Cicadatra atra, Cicadatra hyalina, Cicadatra persica, Cicadetta montana, Cicadetta mediterranea, Dimissalna dimissa, Oligoglena tibialis, Tympanistalna gastrica, Pagiphora annulata, Saticula coriaria, Tibicina haematodes and Tibicina steveni. Two species from this list were doubtful in the beginning of our study, since Tympanistalna gastrica is distributed in central and southern Portugal and Saticula coriaria is a north African species. We checked three major institutional collections housed in Sofia, Bulgaria: the National Museum of Natural History (SOFM), the Institute of Zoology (ZISB) and the Biology Faculty of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" (BFUS). We confirmed 11 of the species mentioned in literature, except Cicadetta mediterranea and found two additional species: Cicadatra platyptera and Cicadetta macedonica (the specimens in BFUS were bioacoustically confirmed). Based on this knowledge, we further investigated the singing cicadas of Bulgaria with the use of morphological and bioacoustic methods in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2019. We were not able to confirm the presence of Cicadatra persica and Cicadetta mediterranea, but found three additional species: Cicadetta brevipennis s. lat., Cicadetta cantilatrix and Tettigettula pygmea. Using the bioacoustic methods, we also detected unknown singing patterns, which could belong to three or four additional taxa, which need to be described. The Bulgarian fauna of singing cicadas at the moment consists of 16 confirmed and 3-4 potential species.

Abstract:
The singing cicadas (Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadoidea) of Bulgaria remain poorly known. There are published records for 14 species (Arabadzhiev 1963, Barjamova 1976, Barjamova 1978, Barjamova 1990, Dirimanov and Harizanov 1965, Dlabola 1955, Gogala et al. 2005, Háva 2016, Janković 1971, Nast 1972, Nast 1987, Nedyalkov 1908, Pelov 1968, Yoakimov 1909): Lyristes plebejus, Cicada orni, Cicadatra atra, C. hyalina, C. persica, Cicadetta montana, C. mediterranea, Oligoglena tibialis, Tympanistalna gastrica, Pagiphora annulata, Dimissalna dimissa, Saticula coriaria, Tibicina haematodes and T. steveni. Two species from this list should be excluded from the list of Bulgarian cicadas, since T. gastrica is distributed in central and southern Portugal (Sueur et al. 2004) and S. coriaria is a north African species (Boulard 1981). We checked three major institutional collections housed in Sofia, Bulgaria: the National Museum of Natural History (NMNHS), Institute of Zoology (ZISB) and Biology Faculty of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" (BFUS). We confirmed 11 of the species mentioned in the literature, except C. mediterranea, and found 2 additional species: C. brevipennis and C. macedonica. Based on this knowledge, we further investigated the singing cicadas of Bulgaria with the use of classical and bioacoustic methods in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2019. We were not able to confirm the presence of C. persica and C. mediterranea, but found three additional species: Cicadatra platyptera, Cicadetta cantilatrix and Tettigettula pygmea. Using the bioacoustic methods we also detected 3 to 4 additional taxa, which need to be described. Thus, the Bulgarian fauna of singing cicadas at the moment consists of 17+ species.

Abstract:
Antarctic marine organisms are characterised by a significant level of endemism. This is due to geological, climatological and oceanographic reasons, such as the break-up of Antarctida from Gondwana during the Cretaceous; the formation of a circumpolar current; the extremely low water temperatures (close to freezing); the short summer seasons. The South Shetland Islands (West Antarctic Peninsula) are one of 29 known biogeographic areas in the Southern Hemisphere (Griffiths et al. 2009). King George Island is the largest island from the South Shetlands and eight countries have their polar bases there. Marine bottom macroinvertebrates from the surrounding seawaters are very well studied (Siciński et al. 2011). Less research was carried out in the region of the nearby Livingston Island. There are located two polar bases: "St. Kliment Ohridski" (Bulgaria) and "Juan Carlos I" (Spain). We can assume that in the seawaters of the South Bay we can also expect a rich bottom macroinvertebrate fauna because of the similar conditions and the close distance between the two islands. The aim of this study is to present the first Bulgarian results on the taxonomic composition of marine macroinvertebrates from the South Bay, Livingston Island. The samples were collected during the XXVIIth Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition (2018–2019 austral summer). Various sites in four areas were sampled: the coastal zone in front of the Bulgarian Polar Base (Costa Bulgara); a small bay south of Cape Hesperides (Reservnoto port); Johnsons Dock Bay near the Spanish research station and Walker Bay near Hannah Point. Samples were collected mainly through bottom trawling at depths of 2 to 20 meters on different types of bottom substrates using Zodiac boats. A total of 11 macrozoobenthos samples were collected. Our preliminary results show that the main macrozoobenthic species are well known in the seawaters of the South Shetlands and usually they have a circumpolar distribution. At the site with soft muddy bottoms (Johnsons Dock Bay), the corrugated ribbon worm Parborlasia corrugatus (McIntosh, 1876) (order Heteronemertea, class Pilidiophora, phylum Nemertea) as well as ascidians (order Phlebobranchia, class Ascidiacea, phylum Chordata) had the highest biomass. The most abundant in the Johnsons Dock Bay were the Antarctic bivalve Aequiyoldia eightsii (Jay, 1839) (order Nuculanida, class Bivalvia, phylum Mollusca); the scale worm Barrukia cristata (Willey, 1902) and the catworm Aglaophamus trissophyllus (Grube, 1877) (both of order Phyllodocida, class Polychaeta, phyllum Annelida). The seroid isopod Spinoserolis beddardi (Calman, 1920) (order Isopoda, class Malacostraca, phyllum Arthropoda) dominated in the muddy / sandy bottom of Hannah Point. The habitats of the rocky bottom (Costa Bulgara) were inhabited mainly by crustaceans (order Aphipoda, class Malacostraca, phyllum Arthropoda) and gastropods (phylum Mollusca). In the tidal zone of this habitat (0–2m), the predominant species was the Antarctic limplet Nacella concinna (Strebel, 1908) (order Patellogastropoda, class Gastropoda, phylum Mollusca).
