Full textThis thesis provides a macro-regional reading of the urbanization process in Taiwan since its origins, over a period or four centuries. The characteristics or city growth arc captured in relation to the development strategies of the various regimes on the island. The method intersects a historical approach with geographic information techniques (QGIS software) to spatialize historical processes. The Taiwanese territory has been essentially dominated by exogenous or colonial powers, while al the same time being the support of intense ethnic mixing, notably by the influx of migrants from the Chinese mainland. Taiwan's economic and urban development has thus found itself at the interface of Western and Eastern spatial strategies of domination. The Western powers developed port cities as part of a colonial strategy embedded in world trade, while the Eastern countries pursued a more continental strategy. The country's capital, Taipei, experienced a less pronounced process or urban primacy than its East Asian counterparts. This betrays a more balanced urban growth, concentrated however in the western part of the island, along a north-south continental transport axis linking two major port hubs. The thesis shows that Taiwan met the criteria or a "developmental state" (Johnson, 1982) productivist strategy during the authoritarian period of the KMT, but that this is no longer the case in the democratic era due to the weakening of the economic pilot agency and the relocation of a large part of the Taiwanese industrial apparatus to China

BOLSA NOTA 10
In this work we present the Tomita-Takesaki theory for a Von Neumann algebra M with cyclic separating vector u. We use the finite-dimensional case to motivate the theory, and then proceed to the analytical arguments usually employed to prove the infinite dimensional case. Also, we calculate the modular operators from the theory for three standard examples. In quantum statistical mechanics, the thermodynamic equilibrium states of a physical system with finitely many particles and finite volume are modeled by Gibbs states, while in the infinite case they are modeled by the so called KMS states through the operator-algebraic approach. We show how Tomita-Takesaki theory provides natural KMS states and the uniqueness of the time evolution of the physical system for those states.

A Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) kit for the assembly of a lamp was created to encourage children's interest in mechanical and electrical engineering. To ensure the lamp was intuitive and fun to use, user testing was conducted. As the user interface (UI) for the lamp was designed and developed, tests were conducted with users using a variety of prototypes ranging from paper, cardboard, and plastic to PowerPoint storyboards on the computer. By incorporating user testing throughout the process of identifying possible button layouts as well as proper lamp proportions, a final intuitive UI with a single panel of buttons was converged upon. This UI utilized one button to switch through the four possible light modes instead of having a separate button for each mode. This UI will be employed in a future prototype that will be further tested with children in the intended age range. These tests will utilize 3D printed pieces for the base and buttons, and will incorporate all the PCBs and LEDs that are intended for use in the final product.

Full textThe number of healthcare institutions that has embraced Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as an effective and efficient method of neonatal care especially in Edo State, Nigeria has not multiplied even after more than a decade of its recommendation by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2003. Nigeria ranks seventh among the ten African countries where newborns have the highest risk of dying with over 700 newborn deaths per10, 000 live births. This is worrisome because Edo State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria that contribute about 6,700 neonatal deaths to the 255,500 mortality rate recorded in Nigeria annually. This has led to a concern about the knowledge and attitude of the key drivers in neonatal care of simplified methods aimed at reducing neonatal mortality despite previous training efforts. The development of a strategy to enhance the early implementation of the WHO KMC guidelines in all healthcare facilities across the state was therefore conceptualized. Strategies to increase implementation are considered important to the success of KMC because reducing neonatal mortality rate is contextual. This research aimed to explore and describe the application of the KMC guidelines by the nurses, administrators and parents of preterm infants in the care of premature babies and to develop strategies to enhance its early implementation in healthcare facilities in Edo State, Nigeria.

First, we study three ways of associating a C*-algebra to a continuous map. Then, we give a new de nition of entropy. We relate the KMS states of the previously de ned algebras with the equilibrium states, given by a variational principle. In the second part, we study the Kajiwara-Watatani algebras associated to iterated function system. We compare these algebras with the Cuntz algebra and the crossed product. Finally, we study the KMS states of the Kajiwara-Watatani algebras for actions coming from a potential and we relate such states with measures found in a version of the Ruelle-Perron- Frobenius theorem for iterated function systems.

Full textThe receptor tyrosine kinase KIT and its ligand, the stem cell factor (SCF), are implicated both in the development and the homeostasis of multiple cell lineages. Dysfunctions in the KIT/SCF pathway are involved in several pathologies affecting these compartments. In particular, gain-of-function mutations that lead to constitutive activation of the receptor KIT are found in human neoplasia. The purpose of this thesis project was to investigate some differences between normal and oncogenic signalling of KIT receptor using mast cells transformed by the KIT-D816 oncogene as a model. This question was analysed at aproximal level on the oncogenic receptor itself and at a more distal level on the STAT signal transduction pathway, which is specifically and constitutively activated by theKIT-D816 mutant. At the proximal level, we show that the juxtamembrane dityrosine motif Y568-Y570 of KIT is the major platform of recruitment of intracellular signalling partnerswith more than 15 interactors found in mast cells. Furthermore, the analysis ofcellular models in both in vitro and in vivo assays related to KIT physiological functions has revealed the negative role of the motif in KIT-D816-mediated cell transformation. At the distal level, we have analysed the mechanisms of phosphorylation ofSTAT1, -3 and -5 proteins and the functional relevance of their activation in KITD816-mediated transformation. We describe the contribution of different kinases inthe phosphorylation of STATs on both serine and tyrosine residues. Our results suggest that only STAT5 is transcriptionaly active whereas STAT1 and STAT3 are not, suggesting a non conventional implication of their activation in celltransformation. Our work contributes to a better understanding of the mechanisms of KITD816-mediated oncogenesis and could be used to improve the rational developmentof new targeted cancer therapies

Full textIn this dissertation we study a probability derived from Quantum Statistical Mechanics through the viewpoint of Ergodic Theory. The probability is obtained from a KMS state acting on a one dimensional lattice of quantum spins. We show that this probability is mixing for the shift map. Moreover, we show that a large deviation principle is true for a certain class of functions and we explore some properties of the Jacobian. We will consider the KMS state associated to a certain specific Hamiltonian acting on the quantum spin lattice. In the initial sections we will present some concepts and prerequisites (such as density operators, tensor product, C*-algebras and KMS states) for the understanding of our main results.

Full textThe constraints that impede the growth of smallholder farmers have been attributed to lack of access to markets and technical expertise. This has led to mainstream banks classifying smallholder farmers as high risk and therefore unwilling to finance smallholder farmers. Contract farming has developed as a model that may be able to link smallholder farmers with agribusinesses who have the expertise and have built marketing channels that can be utilised by the smallholder farmers. Despite its potential to bring smallholder farmers into the mainstream agriculture industry, literature on contract farming has indicated that contract farming can be skewed in favour of the agribusiness due to their superior bargaining power and information asymmetry in favour of the agribusiness. This study examines the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)’s Kat River Development Scheme to finance nine farmers through a contract farming arrangement with Riverside (Pty) Ltd. More particularly, the study examines how this financing model contributes to improved access to finance, markets and technical expertise for the farmers. It also examines how the arrangement contributes to reducing the risk of financing smallholder farmers for IDC. The empirical analysis indicates that, despite the fact that the farmers are able to obtain access to finance, market and technical expertise, the ability for the scheme to meet its objectives in the long term is dependent on improving transparency between the agribusiness and the farmers, providing appropriate incentives for the farmers to apply the required effort and the farmers buying into the long term strategic aim (or “big picture”) of the scheme.

The thesis focuses on postage stamps in post-war Taiwan and the formation of the party-state identity. Postages stamps in post-war Taiwan can be read as officially sanctioned texts that reflect the intention and the ideology of the government of the Republic of China (ROC), which was controlled by the Kuomintang of China (KMT). The first purpose of the thesis was to find out that how postage stamps were issued by the government of the ROC, also known as the government of the KMT. Another aim of the thesis was to investigate themes that reflect the formation of the party-state identity. Finally, roles of the stamps as tools to affect the identity of people in post-war Taiwan were examined in the thesis. In the thesis, it was discovered that postage stamps in post-war Taiwan had played a part in the formation of the party-state identity although a postage stamp was not the only tool to change people’s identity.

This thesis studies the origin and the development of the Taiwanization of KMT regime in Taiwan since 1970s. The author uses the term, Taiwanization of KMT regime, to describe its logic and practice of political transformation since 1970s. Based on different national imaginations and contents of the state systems, the reforms since the 1970s were divided into two periods, each with its own logic and practices. In the first section, the author explains why the political reform happened. This thesis reviews current literatures that discuss the evolution of Taiwan’s political transformation, which includes three different perspectives, internal social approach, external institutional approach and domestic political approach, then, try to combine them into a new framework of interpretation. By reviewing the history of Taiwan’s political transformation through the new framework, the thesis shows that political reforms undertaken by the two leaders were results of changes in three different “contemporary” contexts rather than “historical ” contexts. It argues that we should focus on the contemporary contexts.Secondly, the older state system was established by using political leader’s physical power as it was since 1950s. The author argues that Jiang Jinggou’s political reform in late 1970s was designed merely to sustain the older state system such as domination position of KMT within political arena and the hegemony ideology of Chinese nationalism. But this older logic of political reform had eventually collapsed after Lee Teng-hui replaced Jiang as the regime’s new leader. Another new political reform that leads to building the new state system appeared. By reviewing the process, the thesis identifies the political arena as the key factor to impair result of the different political reforms. Different political arenas will limit the choices available for the different leaders. In concluding section, the author compares two different origins and logics of political reforms and comments on the development of Taiwanization of KMT regime in the past two decades.

Numerous studies regarding the cross-strait relationships have assumed that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) tends to be friendly to the Kuomintang (KMT) and hostile to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). However, few studies have discussed the possibility that the PRC holds such an unvaried dichotomous political attitude. Thus, in this study, we analyzed the press releases of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAOSC) during the ruling periods of the DPP and the KMT using the content analysis method. We also compared the attitude of the PRC to describe different issues in separate periods. Additionally, we analyzed the horizontal axis of the time series regarding months when significant differences in the PRC’s positive and negative attitudes could be observed. The analysis was conducted to determine whether certain events that influenced the attitude of the TAOSC occurred in the surveyed months. This is used to evidence the long-term interaction between the PRC and the two parties of KMT and DPP. From the research design categories, we found that the press releases of the TAOSC during the DPP ruling period exhibited negative attitude of the PRC, except for issues regarding cross-strait negotiations and the civil society. By contrast, the spokesman of the TAOSC presented positive attitude toward all issues during the KMT ruling period. Moreover, despite the conclusion that the PRC tended to be friendly to the KMT, the PRC’s attitude toward the KMT and the DPP varied in different periods. Regarding the DPP, the discourse attitude of the TAOSC was shifted from severe criticism during the DPP ruling period to the conditional support during the presidency of Ma Ying-Jeou. The attitude of the TAOSC toward the KMT was reinforced from the friendliness during the Chen Shui-Bian presidency to the close cooperation during the presidency of Ma Ying-Jeou.

Prednisolone (PRD), a class of glucocorticoid (GC), is commonly used in the treatment of canine mast cell tumors (MCTs). While many MCTs are resistant to GCs at initially or gradually develops upon repeated treatments. Recently, several studies indicated P-glycoprotein (PGP), a drug efflux transporter, and signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) oncogenic proteins may contribute to GC-resistance. In addition, KIT, a well known prognostic factor in MCTs, may also influence the tumor response to PRD. The aims of this study were to evaluate of PRD in treatment of canine cutaneous MCTs and investigate the association of PGP, STAT3, phospho-STAT3 (pSTAT3), and KIT proteins in MCTs with or without PRD treatment. Forty-one dogs having cutaneous MCTs were selected into this study. The overall objective response rate was 51.8% for dogs treated with PRD, and the lower response rate was noted in poor-differentiated or high stages MCTs. Progressive-free interval was obtained from 11 of 27 dogs and about 64% of the dogs (7 of 11) showed progressive disease within 60 days. The immunohistochemical staining was performed on 45 MCT samples from 36 of 41 dogs. The reduction of pSTAT3 and alteration of KIT immunolabelling were observed in the posttreatment MCTs. Expression of proteins were compared with clinical characteristics. The outcomes showed that lower expression of STAT3 in MCTs before treatment was associated with tumor metastasis (P = 0.049). No association was found between other compared groups, but cytoplasmic KIT staining pattern may be correlated with lower tumor response rates to PRD treatment. In conclusion, PRD can cause dramatic tumor reduction in a short period, which may contribute to reduce activation of STAT3. In addition, expression of STAT3 and KIT may be used to predict the potential of tumor metastasis and tumor response to therapy, respectively.

Full textThis study explored the initiation phase of the Kagiso-Shanduka Trust (KST) whole-schooldevelopment model, which is implemented in Fezile Dabi (FD) education district in the Free State Province, South Africa. The research was conceptualised and conducted between 2015 and 2016. I employed a qualitative research methodology and case-study approach to collect data to answer my research questions. The data sources emerged from interviews conducted with five participants who I purposively selected. They are executive members from KST and a senior official from Fezile Dabi District in the Free State Department of Education. I interviewed each participant separately at their places of work. The study identifies the nature of processes and the factors that influenced the adoption of the KST W-SD model. I used the concepts of engagement and mobilisation to unpack the processes and the factors in the initiation phase of the KST W-SD model because they are key concepts that provides descriptive data. These data point out the direction and intensity the change is taking and determine the sustainability elements in the initiation of a change project. Engagement and mobilisation are conscious efforts that bring about insights on the totality of a change project and the adaptations instituted in the initiation phase of a change project. The following findings emerged from the study: 1) there are conditions that gave rise to the need for the model, 2)the model was conceptualised by each organisation individually (KT and FS), then in a dual partnership (KST) and in a tripartite (PPP) through stakeholder engagement and mobilisation, 3) the descriptions fits the conceptualisation, 4)stakeholder engagement and mobilisation created awareness, interest, problem solving opportunities and ownership during interactions of partners, 5) the model was consequently consolidated with six elements, 6) the model elements are integrated and provide a comprehensive package for whole school development, and 7) the model is a product of investment on organisational capacities and capabilities developed over a period of time as well as shared interest and purpose. It is recommended that more research involving private, public partnerships be conducted more frequently on current educational innovation models.

The 21st Century is no doubt a “Knowledge-dominated” era, and the intangible knowledge will become to be the core asset/capital of most businesses. It is a serious and urgent issue for Taiwan businesses to implement Knowledge Management System (KMS), especially for small- and medium-sized businesses in nowadays. A recent survey shows the performance of knowledge management related activities in Taiwan businesses is still ambiguous in practice. The assistance to these businesses with a comprehensive concept of assessment model will be helpful to the success of KMS implementation. This research tries to combine the practical experiences, theoretical viewpoints and case studies, and establishes a pre-stage assessment model in an assessment perspective of critical factor and process analyses for Taiwan businesses when implementing KMS. After the case studies, the final assessment model will be including “SBU strategy assessment,” “KMS strategy assessment,” “KMS structure assessment,” “KMS structure design,” and “KMS technical structure design.” And the research concludes the following findings: (1) The Organization/Personnel is most critical construct when implementing the KMS. (2) The result of Critical Factory Analysis (CFA) & Gap Analysis (GA) is very helpful to build the KMS, and it is important to keep a good analytical quality. (3) The NGT group is able to access as well as assess more other critical factors, which are not included in the CFA in the beginning. (4) The result of GA is useful to clarify the KPI and business goal. (5) The definition of core competences will be discussed and re-defined by each business to do its own decision making. (6) Different type of industry requires different KMS strategy. (7) Businesses in practice adopt and implement tacit, explicit and/or outbound combination strategies that can be done separately or simultaneously. (8) Organization/Personnel and Process designs should connect with the result of “KMS structure assessment,” and these contents are not easy to duplicate by other business. (9) When KMS technical structure is connected with “KMS strategy assessment,” “KMS structure assessment,” and “KMS structure design” in a proper way, it is clear and easy to design. According to the research findings and results, five major sets of proposition were developed. They are: (1) The selected KMS strategy will be different while the attribute of industry is different. (2) The tacit, explicit and outbound combination strategies can be functioned in multiple ways. (3) Differences in the complexity degree of knowledge can result in different tacit strategies. (4) Differences in the complexity degree of knowledge can result in different outbound combination strategies. (5) Business positioned in the highly uncertain environment needs to develop the ability of quick response. And its tacit strategy focuses on the development of individuals’ ability, whereas explicit strategy focuses on the fast circulation and integration of information.

Abstract The particulate theory of matter is a fundamental concept that is important in the process of learning chemistry. This study was designed to determine how well the students understand the concept of the states of matter, and to discover students’ thinking models and their misconceptions. Through the designed a kit of particle model, the simulated state change of matter can be used for the promotion of students’ concept understanding. The subjects of this study were 623 junior high school students. The purposes for the investigation of students’ understandings were as follows. (1) the analysis of junior high school students’ thinking models on “states of matter”; (2) the degree of student’s understandings towards “the changes of the states of matter”; and (3) the influences of using particle model as a stimulated kit in students’ learning process on the states of matter. The results were as follows: 1. Students often referred to the droplets which condensed from the steam after the water was boiled as “vapor”, therefore it formed a misconception to many junior high school students, they treated vapor as liquid. This influenced students’ understandings on the states of matter. 2. The proportion of students who could use particle concept to describe the formation of gas was the lowest, while the proportion of liquid was the highest, and that for solid was in the middle. The degree of students’ understandings on the formation of matter was increased progressively with their grade growth. 3. When a substance state was changed in a closed container, junior high school students thought that the changes of “mass” and “volume” exist obviously some relationship. 4. By applying particle model as a simulated kit, it could help junior high school students to improve their understanding the concept of the states of matter. Students had significantly improved especially on the formation of solids.
