Full textThis dissertation\'s objective is to study the combination of two artificial intelligence planning techniques, namely: hierarchical planning and planning under Knightian uncertainty. Each one of these has distinct advantages, but they can be combined, allowing the planning under uncertainty a performance gain and giving the hierarchical planning the ability to produce more robust plans. First, we study a way of performing a transformation, in a sistematic way, that enables forward-chaining deterministic planning algorithms to deal with non-deterministic actions, that doesn\'t take into account the probability distribution of actions\' effects (Knightian uncertainty). Afterwards, this transformation is applied to a hierarchical planning algorithm that progressively performs decomposition starting from tasks without predecessors. The obtained planner is competitive with state-of-the-art non-deterministic planners, thanks to the additional information that can be given to the planner, in the form of task decomposition methods.

Full textThe need to elaborate innovative methods to analyze risk and uncertainty has become increasingly obvious over the last decades, especially due the growing perception of the multiplicity of social and economical issues characterized by the weight of uncertainty (natural disasters, ecological risk, financial crises…).This thesis is at the crossroad between decision theory under uncertainty and the irreversible investment theory (real options). Consequently, the main goal of this thesis is three-fold: 1. First, it contributes to the dynamic stream of literature in economics and finance that models the impact of ambiguity that individuals may often face and/or perceive when contemplating irreversible choices.2. Next, this thesis emphasizes that even with the plethora of decision models already dealing with uncertainty, elaborating sound axiomatic foundations largely remains an open question. This leads us to recommending the use of non linear models (such as multiple-priors, Choquet expected utility, robust control, smooth ambiguity), which in turn raises many challenging theoretical and practical obstacles. We explore original ways of addressing some of these issues and suggest the construction of ambiguous stochastic processes in a Choquet expected utility framework (that are called Choquet-Brownian motions): ambiguity preferences are thereby directly embedded into the trajectory of some random variables that may drive a decision, such as the expected cash flows of an investment project or its exit value.3. Finally, this thesis also aims specifically at encouraging the enrichment of real option models. It is striking that only the impact of risk has been widely discussed by the real option theory so far, while the specific impact of ambiguity has been largely ignored. Considering that the real option theory is directly concerned with sources of flexibility, irreversibility and uncertainty in general, ambiguity represents a promising expansion

Full textIn his monumental study of 1896, La leyenda de los infantes de Lara, Ramon Menendez Pidal rescued the story of the Seven Knights de Lara (SKL) from near oblivion and sought to resolve the more problematic issues of the narration included in the thirteenth-century Estoria de España for the first time. Approximately a half-century later, the same story was retold in the Crónica de 1344 with more vivid and novelistic details, as well as episodes that were absent from the earlier version. Many scholars have dedicated their careers to studying the medieval epic, yet they have never read the SKL because there was no English translation of it. I have pioneered the first bilingual edition of the legend with the hope of making it accessible to a broader audience ofscholars and students ofthe Middle Ages. My objective was to capture accurately the details of the original texts while providing a translation that can be read independently of them. In order to achieve this goal, I took minor liberties and suppressed unnecessary repetitions, modernized the syntax, and divided the text into paragraphs. Keeping in mind the needs of an audience of scholars and students, I have provided explanations about key historical figures and events, geographical names, concepts of medieval law, specific points of contention among critics regarding certain passages or characters, and references to other literary works. A principal component of the edition is the preliminary study that presents the social, political, and literary contexts in which the narration was composed as well as the major problems that literary scholars discuss today: the questions about the origins of the legend and its authorship, the date of composition, medieval historiography, history and fiction in the SKL, the structure of the two versions and their differences, and the representation of the SKL in later literary works. In the study I not only present the major trends of scholarship that have emerged, but also develop and expound my own perspective on the legend. I assert that the chroniclers included the SKL in the Estoria de España to preserve a well-known story with a moralizing lesson about the dangers of internal enemies and treason.

The Thesis aims to improve, on theoretical and pratical terms, the modeling of economic valuation of investments under high uncertainty, such as Research and Development projects (R&D), especially those that are incremental in nature. From a valuation model based on the design of Real Options Theory, it incorporates a more complete view of uncertainty, which reaches the decisionmaking aspects of the act, known as knightian Uncertainty, where the concepts of risk and uncertainty are separated. The full implementation of the concept of Knight (1921) on quantitative models is possible according to the mathematical development of Schmeidler (1982), which resulted in a new formula for calculation of expected values, based on the Choquet integral (1953). The new model includes a calculation of expected value that makes it possible for the agent to recognize an uncertainty aversion in this concept, known as the Choquet expected value.

Full textIn mammals, body temperature (Tb), as well as locomotor activity, changes during the day, exhibiting a rhythmic pattern. This daily rhythmicity is generated endogenously by circadian oscillators. Usually, the highest Tb values occur simultaneously to locomotor activity. Nevertheless, daily Tb changes are observed even in immobile individuals. This fact is evidence that the Tb rhythm is not a mere consequence of the acute effects of locomotor activity. The present work, which os performed in the research center CRILAR, in Argentina, had the objective of studying the circadian rhythm of Tb. in the rodent Ctenomys aff. knighti (tuco-tuco) and its temporal relationship with the locomotor activity rhythm. The characterization of the Tb rhythm in this animal is especially interesting because it inhabits the subterranean environment, which poses challenges to both rhythmic expression (because environmental cycles are either absent or have low amplitude) and thermoregulation (due to high relative humidity, hypoxic atmosphere and limited ventilation). We measured Tb and locomotor activity of tuco-tucos under controlled laboratory conditions. An initial characterization showed that the tuco-tuco\'s Tb rhythm persisted even in constant darkness and constant temperature. This rhythm synchronized to a daily light/dark cycle, with highest values occurring during the dark phase. Tb and locomotor activity rhythm were robustly associated in time. Then, we investigated whether the wheel running would modify the Tb rhythm amplitude, because this behavior involves intense muscular activity. However, we observed that the amplitude is only slightly altered upon running-wheel removal and that in the absence of the wheel tuco-tucos substitute running with other behaviors which also have acute effects on Tb. Applying a statistical method, which was also used to filter Tb data, we verified that there is a stronger correlation between Tb changes and activity in the beginning of the night. Finally, we investigated whether the Tb rhythm is also under control of the suprachiasmatic nuclei, which are knowingly the circadian oscillators for the locomotor activity rhythm. We used an approach which involved neurally intact animals, by comparing the rhythmic patterns of Tb and locomotor activity rhythms during the occurrence of a phenomenon called \"splitting\". In most cases, splitting patterns of both Tb and locomotor activity rhythms were identical, indicating a common temporal control of these two variables. Nevertheless, we observed, in one animal, differences between the two rhythms, which suggest that the circadian control might be even more complex.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative explanatory single case study was to understand why Knights of Columbus (KofC) volunteers in Ontario, Canada demonstrate motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement. The scope of the study was guided by two main research questions: “Why do KofC members volunteer?” and “How do KofC members combine elements of motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement in their volunteer activity?” The triangulation of participant interviews, observations from KofC general meetings, and online archived documents supported the study’s qualitative methodology that required rich, descriptive data. For feasibility, the population of this study was comprised of KofC volunteers within three councils in Ontario, Canada and 17 KofC members were selected purposively based on age and experience criteria for face-to-face interviews. Transcribed interview data, observational field notes and archival documents were analyzed and coded using NVivo 11 to uncover three emerging themes: living one’s faith, loyalty, and flexibility. The findings indicated that KofC members have alignment between personal and organizational values, intend to follow Biblical scripture to live their faith in the public square, and feel obligated to help others in need. Fraternity and unity were welcomed benefits that KofC members enjoyed while volunteering. KofC provides volunteers with role and task variety, which allows volunteers to choose the activities that suit their interest, skill set, and time commitment. By gaining insights from these themes, organizational leaders can improve their communication to potential and existing volunteers, foster stronger relationships among volunteers, and develop programs that engage volunteers through catered recruitment and retention strategies.
