Differences in diameters and relative diameters of knots classified into three categories of healthiness and three categories of intergrowth with the surrounding wood was shown on a merchantable bole divided into 10 equal sections. We work with a generalization of knot theory, in which one diagram is reachable from another via a finite sequence of moves if a fixed condition regarding the existence of certain morphisms in an associated category is satisfied for every move of the sequence. This conditional setting leads to a possibility of irreversible moves, terminal states, and to using functors more general than the ones used as knot invariants. Our main focus is the category of diagrams with a binary relation on the set of arcs, indicating which arc can move over another arc. We define homology of binary relations, and

The aim of this paper is to give a concise introduction to the theory of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants which generalize the Jones polynomial and which may be considered as a mathematical version of the Witten invariants. Such a theory was introduced by N. Reshetikhin and the author on the ground of the theory of quantum groups. Here we use more general algebraic objects, specifically, ribbon and modular categories. Such categories in particular arise as the categories of representations of quantum groups. The notion of modular category, interesting in itself, is closely related to

Kant has a distinction between things in themselves and phenomena. Things as we know them consist ‘wholly of relations’ therefore we have no insight into ‘the inner’ of things. Kant says that we have no knowledge of the intrinsic properties of things. There are irremediable constraints on what we can know, inevitable limits on what we can become acquainted with. This is a kind of Epistemic Humility. It entails Categorical Humility, according to which we are just as irremediably ignorant of the categorical properties of entities. Ignorance of the categorical structure of the world creates two p

Abstract As observed by J. Beck, and as we know from M. Barr's and his joint work on triple cohomology, the classical isomorphism Opext ≅ 𝐻2 that describes group extensions with abelian kernels, can be deduced from the equivalence between such extensions and torsors (in an appropriate sense). The same is known for many other “group-like” algebraic structures, and now we present a purely-categorical version of that equivalence, essentially by showing that all torsors are extensions with abelian kernels in any pointed protomodular category, and by giving a necessary and sufficient condition for

AbstractSelecting photographs for teaching photo criticism can be a difficult task. This research aims to construct the taxonomy of photo categories for teaching purposes and teaching guidelines. Topics were divided into four major categories of tasks: professional socialization, intellectual, interpersonal, and organizational. Twenty-six of the 103 topics identified were included in more than 50% of the manuals. Among the common topics, more topics were included from the categories dealing with intellectual and interpersonal tasks than from the other two categories, highlighting the importance of these two dimensions of effective teaching, which is consistent with Lowman's (1984) theoretical mode

Are semantic classes of verbs genuine or do they merely mask idiosyncrasies of frequent verbs? Here, we examine the interplay between semantic classes and frequent verb-form combinations, providing new evidence from variation patterns in spontaneous speech that linguistic categories are centered on high frequency members to which other members are similar. We offer an account of the well-known favoring effect of cognition verbs on Spanish subject pronoun expression by considering the role of high-frequency verbs (e.g., creer ‘think’ and saber ‘know’) and particular expressions ((yo) creo ‘I th

Simplicius cites Porphyry’s lost greater commentary on the Categories by the name of its addressee: Πρὸς Γεδάλειον. It has been assumed that we know nothing about Gedalius, and even suggested that he may have been a fictional construct. But his name is Jewish, and Porphyry had no reason to make up a Jewish addressee. It was extremely rare for Greek pagan texts to be dedicated to a Jewish addressee. But Porphyry had an unusual degree of involvement with Judaism. I collect the evidence, and make a tentative proposal about the context for Porphyry’s dedicating this work to Gedalius.
