Abstract:
This research investigated the question of whether automatic or system-generated information classification methods can help humans better manage information. A series of four experiments were conducted; they investigated the usability (i.e., usefulness) of two automatic approaches to information classification, the concept space approach and a Kohonen-based SOM approach in the context of information retrieval. The concept space approach was evaluated in three different domains: Electronic Brainstorming (EBS) sessions, the Internet, and medical literature (the CancerLit collection). The Kohonen-based SOM approach was evaluated in the Internet and medical literature (CancerLit) domains only. In each case, the approach under investigation was compared with existing systems in order to demonstrate performance viability. The basic premise that information management, in particular information retrieval, can be successfully supported by system-based information classification techniques and that humans would find such techniques viable and useful was supported by the experiments. The concept space approach was more successful than the Kohonen-based SOM approach. After modifications to the algorithms based on user feedback from the EBS experiments had been made, users found the concept space approach results to be comparable (in the Internet study) or superior (in the CancerLit study) to existing information classification systems. The key future enhancement will be incorporation of better ways to identify document descriptors through syntactic and semantic front-end processing. The Kohonen-based SOM approach was considered difficult to use in all but one specialized case (the dynamic SOM created as part of the CancerLit prototype). This can probably be attributed to the fact that its associative organization does not match with the standard mental models (hierarchical and alphabetic) for information classification.

Abstract:
Information, both print and online is growing at an exponential rate. The ability to locate individual items of information has not kept pace. Once this information has been brought to bear on a problem, the resulting knowledge is lost. It is difficult to organize and store the results of an information search. We propose a tool to assist in the resolution of these problems. DocKMan's knowledge base builder. Through the use of a hierarchical concept organization and a frame-based inheritance scheme, we believe we have found a means of structuring information which allows easier browsing and retrieval of knowledge. The combination this 'structuring tool' with a text analysis tool facilitates the construction of organized repositories of knowledge or 'knowledge bases'. Text can now be analyzed for specific pieces of information which are then inserted into the appropriate area of the hierarchy. Such a set of tools will prove especially useful to knowledge workers in technically oriented fields.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this study is to analyze the document retrieval process and the main information retrieval (IR) concepts from the point of view of semiotics and design retrieval mechanisms based on the findings of the semiotic analysis of the retrieval situation. Semiotics is a discipline which studies 'sign systems' and how signs are exchanged in communication. The semiotic view of IR interaction presented in this dissertation views document retrieval as a kind of human communication process taking place in a social and cultural realm. The most important result of the semiotic model developed is the explication of the distinction between the knowledge production and transfer functions of document retrieval. The consequence of this finding is the conceptualization of the retrieval process as a dynamic and complex interplay between knowledge production and transfer tasks. It is hypothesised that, in the case of knowledge production, users of retrieval systems are interested in exploring new areas of the document collection which are not a priori known. Two knowledge based systems are developed based on the Okapi probabilistic retrieval system. The purpose of the retrieval systems designed is posited, in general terms, as to suggest the users new search areas of potential interest. This is achieved by treating the Inspec thesaurus as a semantic network, and applying a heuristic spreading activation technique to generate clusters of terms linked in the Inspec thesaurus. Each cluster or batch of terms is conceived as representing a part of the general search area defined by the initial user search terms. The main design objective here is to enable the user to identify new search areas from the term information contained in the batches. Two evaluation experiments were carried out with real users who had real information needs to test whether the batches were actually effective in defining search areas related to the original user queries and whether they were useful in pointing new areas which were potentially relevant to the users. A number of hypotheses related to the retrieval effectiveness of the knowledge based systems designed were also tested in the experiments. The main findings of the experiments indicate that: • the batches were useful in representing search domains relevant to the users' queries • in many cases the batches represented new ideas or new search domains to the users • the knowledge based systems had similar retrieval effectiveness in terms of precision as the Okapi system.

Abstract:
The expanding availability of on-line information sources, such as on-line documents, corpora, and the World Wide Web, introduces some challenges. Most notably, users must search through this material to find high-quality, relevant information. This is the domain of information retrieval. Alternatively, knowledge bases present information in a very compact and structured representation. Unfortunately, their creation is labor intensive. In order to bridge the gap between the amount of structure in the information processed by information retrieval and knowledge engineering techniques, the author presents TAKODO, a tool and a framework designed for both (i) facilitating the extraction of knowledge from unstructured text, possibly to aid in the process of creating a knowledge base, and (ii) retrieving information from natural language texts and the knowledge base, using each to their mutual advantage. TAKODO integrates several existing applications, among them a question answering system, called Text Analyzer, and a frame-based knowledge management tool, called the Knowledge Organizer, with the additional support of corpus linguistic techniques.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Knowledge management is a fragmented and ambiguous management practice. This is evident from the plethora of definitions available for this field. The premise of this study is that different discourse patterns in knowledge management also contribute to the ambiguity. Four theoretical lenses describe the typical discourses that are associated with the formation of management practices, namely management innovation, umbrella construction, management fashion cycles and institutionalisation of management practice. The following propositions are indicative of the types of discourses involved – the rationale, business outcome, management niche, solution definitions and the means provided for the enactment of the practice. The discourses of seven proponents were analysed according to the above, viz. Verna Allee, Nancy Dixon, Leif Edvinsson, Ikujiro Nonaka, Laurence Prusak, David Snowden and Mathieu Weggeman. Three main patterns were identified based on the manner in which the discourses associated with the four theoretical lenses manifest in the analysed discourses. These patterns represent three different conceptualisations of knowledge management, namely - (i) Knowledge management as a meta-practice framework: the focus is on the assimilation and synthesis of the various knowledge-based practices that are part of other management practices (such as quality management), or practices that originate from fluid initiatives in organisations (e.g. the role of the librarian transforming to become a information broker), or practices that are defined through systematic experimentation (such as the potential of social media for intelligence analysis). (ii) Knowledge management as a platform and catalyst for systemic management innovation: the quest is to define new approaches that are appropriate to manage organisations as complex knowledge-based systems. These approaches should supersede management practices still rooted in Newtonian or mechanistic thinking. Knowledge management is regarded to be a revolutionary practice that proposes, conceptualises and diffuses such new approaches, e.g. value network management (Verna Allee) and the Cynefin framework (David Snowden). (iii) Knowledge management as a master idea or master narrative: this knowledge management discourse is about the theorisation of novel structural arrangements that emerge in organisations as a response to the new requirements of a knowledge-driven economy. This theorisation influences the thinking, premises and practices of various management fields, such as strategic planning, human resource management and organisational design.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kennisbestuur is ‘n gefragmenteerde en dubbelsinnige bestuurspraktyk. Dit is duidelik uit die menigvuldige definisies wat voorgehou word vir die veld. Die uitgangspunt van hierdie studie is dat verskillende diskoerspatrone in kennisbestuur ook tot die dubbelsinnigheid bydra. Vier teoretiese lense beskryf die tipiese diskoerse wat geassosieer word met die vorming van bestuurspraktyke, naamlik bestuursinnovasie, sambreelkonstruksies, bestuursmodesiklusse en die institutionalisering van bestuurspraktyke. Die volgende aspekte is ‘n aanduiding van die tipes diskoerse betrokke – die rasionaal, besigheidsuitkoms, bestuursnis, die definisie van die oplossing en die middele wat vir die implementering van die praktyke verskaf word. Die diskoerse van sewe voorstaanders is geanaliseer aan die hand van bogenoemde, naamlik Verna Allee, Nancy Dixon, Leif Edvinsson, Ikujiro Nonaka, David Snowden en Matthieu Weggeman. Drie hoofpatrone is geidentifiseer, gebaseer op die analise van die wyse waarin die vier teoretiese lense in die geselekteerde diskoerse manifesteer. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 120-125).<br>This dissertation focuses on a knowledge audit that was conducted in a research organisation (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. A knowledge and information audit provides a framework that examines the ways in which an organisation handles and leverages its knowledge and information assets. The audit examines ways an organisation creates, generates, disseminates, stores and shares its knowledge and information resources. In the process, the gaps, sinks, and duplications are revealed; providing useful information that can support decision making and knowledge management initiatives to enhance organisational productivity and effectiveness. This relates specifically to developing relevant information and knowledge strategies, to understanding an organisation's knowledge and information needs and aligning these with the right tools that will facilitate efficiency in an organisation's core engagements. This knowledge and information audit was exploratory in nature and sought to understand the current information and knowledge environment of the organisation. It was anticipated that the results would augment and feed into the current reflections of the organisation on how to leverage its knowledge and information assets and improve efficiency and remain competitive in the market place. The audit was carried out at PLAAS, a research unit that produces considerable research output based on the empirical studies that the staff conducts. The organisation, in addition, is actively involved in forums that debate and engage with various players in the land and agrarian sector in South Africa. These engagements are at a level where they influence policy matters related to land and agrarian matters in the new South Africa. This audit sought to examine what information and knowledge supports core engagements of the staff, what information and knowledge they use, where they find it and in the process establish the gaps, and challenges staff face as they carry out their core research duties. The audit adopted a qualitative approach to research, where interviews were the primary source of data collection. An interview guide was developed to facilitate the data collection and twelve (12) interviews were conducted. The themes, recurring items, and unique views that emerged guided the analysis. Recommendations to improve the current knowledge and information environment took the form of a 'Road Map for Knowledge Management' that the organisation can adopt to enhance the current operating system. The knowledge and information audit showed that the organisation is very knowledge-oriented and extensively engaged in knowledge work even though this is not explicitly referred to as 'Knowledge Management'. Many shortcomings were identified with regard to the knowledge and information system that is currently in place and these specifically relate to: the organisational structure, organisational memory, organisational technology infrastructure, infrastructure, knowledge sharing activities, and the organisational culture. The results suggested that the organisation needs to strengthen aspects in these areas in order to remain efficient and support the staff in their daily work activities. The outcomes further suggest that knowledge audit methodologies (as an area of knowledge management) need to develop and be standardized and that more research needs to be conducted in this field of knowledge management.

In particular, the class of all problems possessing statistical zero-knowledge proofs (SZK) was shown to have complete problems characterized by the statistical distance (Sahai and Vadhan [JACM, 20031) and entropy difference (Goldreich and Vadhan [CCC, 19991) of a pair of efficiently samplable distributions. This characterization has been extremely beneficial in understanding the computational complexity of languages with zero-knowledge proofs and deriving new applications from such languages. In this thesis, we further study the relation between zero-knowledge proofs and information theory. We show the following results: 1. Two additional complete problems for SZK characterized by other information theoretic notions-triangular discrimination and Jensen-Shannon divergence.<br>These new complete problems further expand the regime of parameters for which the STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE PROBLEM is complete for SZK. We further show that the parameterized STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE PROBLEM, for a regime of parameters in which this problem is not known to be in SZK, still share many properties with SZK. Specifically, its hardness implies the existence of one-way functions, and it and its complement have a constant-round public coin interactive protocol (i.e., AM n coAM). 2. The hardness of a problem related to the ENTROPY DIFFERENCE PROBLEM implies the existence of multi-collision resistant hash functions (MCRH). We also demonstrate the usefulness of such hash functions by showing that the existence of MCRH implies the existence of constant-round statistically hiding (and computationally binding) commitment schemes. 3. We initiate the study of zero-knowledge in the model of interactive proofs of proximity (IPP). We show efficient zero-knowledge IPPs for several problems.<br>We also show problems with efficient IPPs, for which every zero-knowledge IPP must be inefficient. Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Storytelling is gaining recognition as areas of inquiry in management and organisation theory, but it is difficult to ascertain to what extent it is useful for organisational knowledge management. The thesis argues that although the existing literature on organisational storytelling is focused on the knowledge sharing aspects of storytelling, it is also useful for knowledge capturing. Whilst most knowledge management systems focus on explicit knowledge, the capture of tacit knowledge, which is hard to identify and manage, is a major challenge. The thesis uses Becerra-Fernandez et al.'s knowledge management framework to establish the requirements for knowledge management, and specifically highlighting the important role of tacit knowledge in organisational knowledge processes. Thereafter the role of storytelling in organisations is described by way of a literature review that includes the work of Snowden, Denning, Boje and Czarniawska. The outcome of this review is to show that storytelling is an informal process in organisations and that attempts to formalise it are still in its infancy. The various insights about the role of stories in organisations are then mapped against the requirements for knowledge management. It is shown that the storytelling literature almost wholly concentrates on the area of knowledge sharing and less so in the areas of knowledge discovery, capture and application. Since knowledge capture involves the externalisation of tacit knowledge and because tacit knowledge is more easily expressed in narrative form, it is argued that storytelling can also contribute to knowledge management as a way to capture knowledge.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Stories en vertellings word toenemend erken as areas van ondersoek in bestuurs- en organisasieteorie, maar dit is moeilik om te bepaal tot watter mate dit bruikbaar is vir organisatoriese kennisbestuur. Die tesis argumenteer dat, hoewel die bestaande literatuur oor organisatoriese stories gefokus is op stories as die oordrag van kennis, dit ook bruikbaar mag wees vir kennis-formalisering. Terwyl die meeste kennisbestuursisteme op eksplisiete kennis gefokus is, is die formalisering van versweë kennis, wat moeilik is om te identifiseer en bestuur, 'n groot uitdaging. Hierdie uitdagings tel onder die faktore wat dienslewering negatief beinvloed. Alhoewel die Departement van Behuising ongeveer twee miljoen en sewe honderd duisend huise gelewer het, sedert 1994 was daar nog steeds uitdagings. Gepaardgaande met swak dienslewering, het die Departement ook gesukkel om bates soos inligting, kennis, inligtingstegnologie en menslike hulpbronne te bestuur. Alhoewel dit uitgebreide beleggings gemaak het in inligting tegnologie, veral in die ondersteuningsdienste, het die departement nog nie die tegnologie ten volle benut nie. Information technology plays a supportive role in knowledge management. It captures and stores knowledge into knowledge repositories. At the same time, it also improves access to knowledge stored in knowledge repositories. The codification strategy in knowledge management (Hansen, et al., 1999) and the capturing functionality of information technology have made more and more knowledge repositories available. However, the utility of a knowledge repository may largely depend on how information is presented and requested through its interfaces. The interface requirement of a knowledge repository varies with the content of knowledge and the media type in which the repository stores the knowledge. The dissertation provides an example of selecting appropriate information visualization and analysis technology to facilitate effective knowledge retrieval from different types of knowledge repository. It identifies four types of knowledge repository, each of which has unique requirements for its interfaces. The dissertation applies various visualization technologies to fulfill such requirements. The interfaces developed facilitate the knowledge retrieval by helping in the specification of information needs or by supporting users' information browsing behavior. In addition, the dissertation also presents four empirical studies evaluating the systems developed. Since the lack of evaluation studies in the field of information visualization has become an issue, such empirical studies also provide examples of approaches to evaluating different aspects of an interface.

Abstract:
The international knowledge management field has different ways of investigating, developing, believing, and studying knowledge management. Knowledge management (KM) is distinguished deductively by know-how, and its intangible nature establishes different approaches to KM concepts, practices, and developments. Exploratory research and theoretical principles have formed functional intelligences from 1896 to 2013, leading to a knowledge management knowledge science (KMKS) concept that derived a grounded theory of knowledge activity (KAT). This study addressed the impact of knowledge production problems on KM practice. The purpose of this qualitative meta-analysis study was to fit KM practice within the framework of knowledge science (KS) study. Themed questions and research variables focused on field mechanisms, operative functions, principle theory, and relationships of KMKS. The action research used by American practitioners has not established a formal structure for KS. The meta-data-analysis examined 385 transdisciplinary peer-reviewed articles using social science, service science, and systems science databases, with a selection of interdisciplinary studies that had a practice-research-theory framework. Key attributes utilizing Boolean limiters, words, phrases and publication dates, along with triangulation, language analysis and coding through analytic software identified commonalities of the data under study. Findings reflect that KM has not become a theoretically saturated field. KS as the forensic science of KM creates a paradigm shift, causes social change that averts rapid shifts in management direction and uncertainty, and connects KM philosophy and science of knowledge. These findings have social change implications by informing the work of managers and academics to generate a methodical applied science.

This research is concerned with the problem of making knowledge acquisition and representation practical for a wide variety of people. The key question investigated is the following: What features are needed in what this research defines as a knowledge management system, so that people who are not computer specialists can use it for tasks that involve manipulating complex ideas? In this research the needs of such users were evaluated, and several prototype systems were created, culminating in the creation of a system called CODE4. A key conclusion is as follows: Users need a tool that involves the synthesis of several techniques for organizing the knowledge. The research has led to ideas for two types of features: abstract knowledge representation features and user interface features. Some of the proposed abstract knowledge representation features that are novel or improved include: (1) a uniform treatment of units of knowledge which are called concepts; (2) the separation of the names of concepts from their unique identities so that concepts can have multiple names and a given name can be used for several concepts; (3) the classification of conceptual relations using property and statement hierarchies, and (4) facilities for smoothly integrating informal knowledge with knowledge that is more precisely represented. The above ideas are implemented in CODE4-KR, the abstract knowledge representation used in the CODE4 knowledge management system. Some of the user interface features that are found in CODE4, and are proposed for general use, are: (1) unlimited chained browsers; (2) knowledge maps, representing patterns of knowledge to be explored or processed; (3) fully interchangeable mediating representations operating on knowledge maps; (4) a uniform set of knowledge editing operations in the mediating representations, and (5) masks for highlighting and controlling the visibility of concepts. CODE4 has had a significant amount of serious use by users in such diverse fields as terminology, organizational modelling and software engineering. This has served as the basis for validating the above ideas about knowledge organization. To this end, several techniques have been used including: (1) a detailed questionnaire about CODE4 administered to many users, and (2) a static analysis of the knowledge bases using several newly-developed metrics. The metrics include seven largely independent measures of knowledge base complexity, as well as compound measures that allow the user to ascertain the completeness, well-formedness and information-richness of a knowledge base.

This demand for performance improvement has now also reached the public sector. The Parliamentary Service responded to this demand by contracting consultants to design systems, policies and strategies in areas such as performance management, information technology, human resource management, financial resource management, training and development. Against this background, a case study was conducted within the Parliamentary Service to explore how organizational knowledge is created and transferred in practice. The theoretical lens for this case study is Nonaka's knowledge spiral, which puts emphasis on the creation, codification and diffusion of knowledge. The study explores processes and mechanisms of creating, transferring and capturing knowledge. This is done through the examination of strategies and systems for codifying tacit knowledge and storing that codified knowledge. Thereafter technological, cultural and organizational barriers that inhibit these efforts at sharing and storage of knowledge are identified. In the light of the above, implications for managing organizational knowledge are outlined. Lastly recommendations are made on how tacit and explicit knowledge could be efficiently managed within the sections and divisions of the Parliamentary Service. Data was gathered through interviews, observation and an analysis of organizational documents. These demonstrate that through the contracting of consultants and the involvement of internal stakeholders, parliamentary service has made remarkable progress in creating, sharing, and codifying knowledge of the performance management system at individual, group and organizational levels. This progress was made as the result of the institutionalization of a performance management forum, the use of workshops, the training of trainers and staff, the publications of newsletters, the development of manuals and the writing and submission of reports. However, it was also found that there are certain technological, cultural and organizational barriers to effective knowledge management. These include the lack of electronic databases, a culture of hoarding knowledge and the fact that knowledge management roles are not assigned. Based on the analysis of these technological, cultural and organizational barriers the -- study makes six recommendations for the management of organizational knowledge within the parliamentary service. These recommendations deal with the following issues: The codification of tacit knowledge, the creation of a knowledge repository, the promotion of a knowledge sharing culture, the institutionalization of knowledge sharing incentives, the establishment of a knowledge management unit, and the appointment of a chief knowledge officer.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kennisgebaseerde orgamsas1es moet aaneenlopend kennis skep, deel en kodifiseer om kompeterend te bly. <p> Since the early 2000s, a new type of working environment has developed in which individual workers&mdash;usually in a technology profession&mdash;share office space in a large, open, nontraditional environment that transcends traditional organizational boundaries. These new environments, called coworking spaces, present opportunities for communication, information sharing, and knowledge creation because of their open physical environments, the reduced presence of organizational barriers, and as a result of intentional efforts of the leaders of coworking spaces to encourage collaboration. While there is a substantial body of knowledge focused on how workers share information and build knowledge in traditional workplaces, there is little academic research on these novel coworking environments. This study examines the lived experiences of members of a specific coworking space located in the Phoenix, Arizona area in the United States. </p><p> Through interviews with key informants, this study evaluates the communication channels that members of a coworking space use to share information and uses the Nonaka SECI model to determine the types of information sharing and knowledge creation that happen at the space. </p><p> This study finds that members of the coworking space heavily lean toward using in-person communication and next-generation instant messaging to share information, and that they primarily create knowledge through combining the explicit knowledge of members to create new explicit knowledge. The findings of this study lead to specific implications for researchers to further examine the communication channels used in coworking spaces, especially next-generation instant messaging tools. The researcher also recommends specific steps that leaders of coworking spaces can follow to improve the level of involvement of members of their spaces, and to position non-profit spaces favorably against competing for-profit coworking spaces.</p><p>

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis studies the relationship between knowledge creation and organisational culture. To do that the relations between Nonaka's enabling conditions and the four organisational culture types according to the competing value framework of Cameron and Quinn were tested in two organisations. Whilst many authors are critical of the specifics of Nonaka and Takeuchi’s model of knowledge conversion, most seem to agree with their argument about the requisite enabling conditions for knowledge creation. It is argued that these enabling conditions are shaped by the organisational culture and therefore this relation is of some importance. The empirical research was based on two part questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire concerned the knowledge creation enablers. The indicators for this part of the instrument had to be developed from the knowledge creation literature. The second part of the questionnaire was based on the validated Cameron and Quinn organisational culture assessment instrument. Since Nonaka recommends a middle-up-down approach for managing knowledge creation in organisations, the questionnaire was directed at the middle management of the selected organisations. 140 questionnaires were sent out and two organisations had adequate responses for statistical data analysis. The results showed that one organisation has a strong market culture. This organisation displayed requisite variety, creative chaos and autonomy as enablers for knowledge creation. The market culture is an organisation’s response to an environment filled with complexities of the brand market which requires the presence of requisite variety and creative chaos. The organisation uses autonomous work teams, hence the prominence of autonomy. The second organisation competes in the business solutions market. Here, the dominant culture type was that of a clan and the organisation was strong in most knowledge creation enablers except redundancy and ba. The dominance in clan culture is in line with a medium size company that is competing in the big league of providers of business solutions and the organisation believes that its success is in providing unique business solutions thanks to teamwork and working like family. It is concluded that for an organization to be competitive requires one dominant appropriate culture and not necessarily all knowledge creating enablers.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tesis ondersoek die verband tussen kennisskepping en organisasie kultuur. Dit word gedoen deur die relasie tussen Nonaka se omgewingsomstandighede vir kennisskepping en die vier organisatoriese kultuurtipes van Cameron en Quinn in twee organisasies te meet. Terwyl baie skrywers krities is oor die besonderhede van Nonaka en Takeuchi se model van kennisskepping, is die meeste met hulle eens oor die omgewingsomstandighede wat kennisskepping in staat stel. Daar word geargumenteer dat hierdie omgewingsomstandighede hoofsaaklik deur die organisasie kultuur beïnvloed word en daarom is hierdie verband belangrik. Die organisasie het hoog gemeet in al die omgewingsomstandighede behalwe oortolligheid en ba. Die dominansie van klan-tipe kultuur strook met ‘n mediumgrootte maatskappy wat unieke oplossings moet bied gebaseer op spanwerk in kompetisie met groter konsultasie maatskappye. Die gevolgtrekking is dat ‘n dominante kultuurtipe ‘n voordeel is vir ‘n organisasie om te kan kompeteer, eerder as die teenwoordigheid van al die omgewingsomstandighede vir kennisskepping.

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis seeks to contribute towards a much-­‐needed operational definition of the knowledge economy – a term which is as widely used as it is misunderstood. Despite two decades of academic contemplation and debate, much uncertainty still surrounds the concept of a knowledge economy, making it exceedingly difficult for researches, academics and policymakers to find a shared perspective. The problem extends beyond just semantics – often contained within a certain definition are underlying assumptions that have the potential to inform decision-­‐making and guide action. Chapter One introduces the aims of this thesis, and outlines the intended approach. In particular, it highlights the challenges of conducting a literature review based on an extensive and highly varied set of contributions towards the concept of the knowledge economy. Chapter Two seeks to clarify the concept of the knowledge economy and how it distinguishes itself from the broader, more inclusive concept of the knowledge society. After drawing distinctions between the two concepts, Chapter Two develops upon the knowledge society concept’s more inclusive nature, and suggests that the extensive scope of the term detracts from its usefulness as a guide for policymakers – in particular, in relation to the somewhat more precise concept of the knowledge economy. Chapter Three begins the focus on the In order to provide some conceptual clarity in this regard, a number of the most prevalent and/or enduring contributions are grouped under the four overarching categorisations that emerged as a result of the discussion in this chapter: namely, Propositional Knowledge, Prescriptive Knowledge, Cultural Knowledge and Understanding. Chapter Four focuses on the next component of the term knowledge economy, and places attention on the economic aspects of knowledge which have emerged over the past two decades as a result of the technological and academic shifts that have taken place in this period. Chapter Five uses the foundation of understanding built up to this point to answer the question: what is new about the knowledge economy? Here, the impact of ICTs comes to the fore in illustrating the way in which these technologies have altered modern societies on a deep and profound level. Secondly, Chapter Five develops upon the way in which knowledge as an economy commodity has caused widespread upheaval in Industrial Era economic theory. Here, the idea that the tenets that governed the physical paradigm economy of industry and manufacturing are no longer relevant or valuable in the face of a core commodity which does not obey the principal rules of physical paradigm goods. Chapter Six concludes the discussions that have unfolded in this thesis, and highlights how the preceding chapters all contribute towards achieving the initial aims of the thesis. On top of this, it highlights the challenges uncovered during the course of the thesis that will continue to provide limitations to the achievement of a precise definition of the concept of the knowledge economy. Ten spyte van twee dekades van akademiese nadenke en debatvoering, is daar steeds onduidelikheid rondom die kennis ekonomie as konsep, wat dit vir navorsers, akademici en beleidmakers moeilik maak om ’n algemeen-­‐aanvaarde perspektief te bereik. Die probleem is nie bloot semanties van aard nie – sommige definisies behels onderliggende aannames wat die potensiaal het om besluitneming and handeling te beïnvloed. Hoofstuk Een dien as inleiding tot die doelstellings van hierdie tesis en omskryf die benadering van die tesis. Knowledge assets are embedded in the objects within an organisation and are the source of an organisation’s competitive advantage, by being closely linked to what the organisation knows and by allowing the organisation to act and to be innovative. Knowledge assets evolve over time as knowledge agents, through a process of sense making, substitute physical resources for informational resources by codifying and abstracting knowledge assets, in the process increasing their value and ability to be diffused to wider audiences. These knowledge assets are internalised in an organisation and impact on the organisation when they are applied to concrete problems. Knowledge assets play an important role in the creation of information assets in an organisation. Information assets are created when a knowledge agent makes use of his or her knowledge to make sense of data received from sources in the environment. The creation of information through the sense making process creates new knowledge which is added to the agent’s knowledge base. Enterprise architecture is the process of designing future states for an organisation and then planning, leading and governing the organisation towards that future state. Enterprise architecture focuses mostly on the organisational process, on information and technology. Enterprise architects make use of enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF or the Zachman framework, which are primarily concerned with the domains of business, information and technology architecture, yet none of these mainstream frameworks used by enterprise architects takes knowledge assets into account, despite the obviously important role that they play in the organisation and especially in the information creation process. This research proposes to show that knowledge assets have an important role to play in enterprise architecture by allowing enterprise architects to • identify or facilitate the creation of knowledge assets pertaining to a specific problem; • understand whether information assets are located in the ordered and complex or the chaotic regimes and what would be the implication of moving them between regimes; • plot knowledge assets movements and relationships to each other on the social learning cycle path, which would enable enterprise architects to balance the types of learning that the organisation employs; • define the level of codification, abstraction and diffusion of knowledge assets, based on the intended audiences and to understand where knowledge assets could be developed to improve quality and when outdated knowledge should be destroyed in favour of new knowledge. Knowledge assets are related to Enterprise Business Architecture (EBA) through the specific knowledge domains that exist within an organisation. Understanding whether knowledge assets exist in the ordered, complex or chaotic regimes will provide a more complete view of the organisation. Architecture of knowledge assets in this space will provide a better understanding of an organisation’s culture: this understanding can compensate for differences in knowledge agents’ spatio-temporal positions, how and when they receive data and their particular cognitive styles. The importance of knowledge assets in the creation of information links it emphatically with Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA). Knowledge asset architecture provides a better understanding of how information is created and flows through an organisation, taking into account the meaning of the information to the organisation, which compensates for that oversight in information theory, which regards the accuracy of data that is communicated as the only concern. Information technology has exponentially increased mankind’s ability to codify, abstract and diffuse knowledge assets. Enterprise Technical Architecture (ETA) is mainly concerned with the technology infrastructure implemented within an organisation. Enterprise architects can apply knowledge asset architecture to decide whether the technology should be used to enhance the codification and abstraction of information, allowing more efficient diffusion of information to a larger audience, or whether more concrete information should be diffused to a more closely-knit audience. This research will argue that the use of knowledge assets as a domain within enterprise architecture will greatly enhance the enterprise architect’s ability to understand and lead the organisation to a more desirable future state.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kennisbates is vasgelê in die konkrete en abstrakte voorwerpe in die organisasie. Hierdie voorwerpe omsluit alle voorwerpe wat ‘n effek het op hoe die organisasie reageer op data wat vanaf die omgewing ontvang word. Kennisbates is ‘n bron vir die kompeterende voordeel wat ‘n organisasie geniet omdat dit verband hou met wat die organisasie weet en dit die organisasie in staat stel om te innoveer. Kennisbates sal aangaande evolueer soos wat kennisdraers, deur die sinmaak proses, fisiese hulpbronne vervang met inligtings hulpbronne gedurende die proses van kodifisering en abstraksie en sodoende die kennisbates se waarde vir die organisasie te verhoog en beskikbaar te stel vir groter gehore. This assignment examines the status of knowledge and knowledge management (KM) practices at the Provincial Library Services (PLIS). I approached the topic by collecting data relevant to the management of information and knowledge and benefits of the KM activities using the following methods: A review of literature and research: - addressing the paucity of literature and research that is both current and directly relevant to libraries was one of the motivating factors behind the study; analysis of key documents and information systems; a questionnaire was distributed to the PUS personnel; informal interviews and observations. The results seem to indicate that PLIS has a knowledge infrastructure and a technology infrastructure. This is apparent in its knowledge programmes, e-mail system, web page, library management system (PROLIB), and limited access to the Internet. Staff has some fairly basic knowledge and information needs that must be addressed. Few knowledge contents should be established. The baseline information provides a foundation for more coordination; recognition of the importance and enhancement of its KM related activities. KM activities should focus on individual capabilities. Recommendations are articulated in terms of a proposed KM strategy. It became evident that success of knowledge management depends on an environment, which is conducive to conversion of individual knowledge to organizational knowledge, the value to which employees place on knowledge and their attitude towards KM. Moreover, indicators of success and evidence of effectiveness should take the measuring criteria beyond a checklist of policies and strategies, procedures and processes, systems, activities but professional competence, commitment, benchmarking and adoption of best practices for attainment of KM goals. Important to note, is the reality that a KM activity for PLIS has to take broader transformation imperatives into account.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar word sterk druk geplaas op organisasies om kennis te bekom, te behou en te verbeter vir volgehoue mededingende strategiese voorsprong. Hierdie werstuk ondersoek die status van kennis en kennisbestuur- (Knowledge Management, KM) praktyke van die Provinsiale Biblioteekdiens. Ek het die- onderwerp benader deur data te versamel wat relevant is tot die bestuur van inligting en kennis sowel as die voordele van KM aktiwiteite deur die volgende metodes te gebruik: 'n Oorsig van literatuur en navorsing: - een van die faktore wat die studie gemotiveer het is om die beperkte beskikbare literatuur en navorsing wat op datum sowel as relevant tot biblioteke is aan te spreek; 'n ontleding van die kern dokumente en inligtingsisteme; 'n vraelys wat versprei is onder die personeel van die Provinsiale Biblioteekdiens; informele onderhoude en waarnemings. Thesis (MA (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: When studying information and knowledge management case studies, it becomes evident that barriers to information and knowledge sharing persist, even in organisations that are lauded for their IKM initiatives. This study set out to probe why this is the case. To this end the study explored persistent barriers to information and knowledge sharing through an investigation of a Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise (MAKE) award winning organisation. It was predicted that the persistent barriers would correspond to the characteristics of organisations as complex social systems. Results indicated that the persistent barriers identified in the MAKE award winning organisation mirror the characteristics of complex social systems. The findings suggest one possible explanation for the persistence of barriers to information and knowledge sharing, namely that these barriers are rooted in the nature of organisations as complex systems. Viewing poor information and knowledge flows through a complex social systems lens draws attention to the ‘wicked’ nature of the issue, i.e. the reality that persistent barriers form interacting meshes that can at best be mitigated but not eliminated. Also, viewing persistent barriers as inherent in organisations suggest alternative ways of attending to these barriers.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ‘n Oorsig van inligting- en kennisbestuur (IKB) gevallestudies wys duidelik dat hindernisse tot inligting- en kennisdeling gedurig volhou, selfs in organisasies met hoogs aangeskrewe IKB inisiatiewe. Die oogmerk van hierdie studie was om vas te stel waarom dit so is. Die studie het daarom hardnekkig volhoudende hindernisse tot inligting- en kennisdeling binne ‘n erkende Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise (MAKE) organisasie ondersoek. The world is being inundated with knowledge at an ever-increasing rate. As intelligent beings and users of knowledge, we must find new ways to locate particular items of information in this huge reservoir of knowledge or we will soon be overwhelmed with enormous quantities of documents that no one any longer has time to read. The vast majority of knowledge is still being stored in conventional text written in natural language, such as books and articles, rather than in more "advanced" forms like knowledge bases. With more and more of these texts being stored on-line rather than solely in print, an opportunity exists to make use of the power of the computer to aid in the location and analysis of knowledge in on-line texts. We propose a tool to do this--the Text Analyzer. We have combined methods from computational linguistics and artificial intelligence to provide the users of the Text Analyzer with a variety of options for finding information in documents, verifying the consistency of this information, performing word and conceptual analyses and other operations. Parsing and indexing are not used in the Text Analyzer. The Text Analyzer can be connected to CODE4, a knowledge management system, so that a knowledge base can be constructed as knowledge is found in the text. We believe this tool will be especially useful for linguists, knowledge engineers, and document specialists.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the question of organisational knowledge creation in geographically dispersed settings. In Chapter 1, I describe Nonaka’s model of organisational knowledge creation and Weick’s theory of organisational sensemaking in more detail. In Chapter 2, the geographically dispersed organisation is examined in more detail, looking at socialisation, organisational culture and trust. In Chapter 3, communication dynamics within the geographically dispersed organisation are examined, with a focus on Media Richness Theory and the impact this has had on theories of communication across distance. In Chapter 4, the organisation is examined at the level of the team, discussing real world examples of dispersed knowledge creation from the knowledge management and sensemaking perspective, using research on globally dispersed software development teams practicing the Scrum methodology. The thesis comes to the conclusion that it is possible for knowledge creation to occur amongst geographically dispersed individuals, if they have learned how to make sense together. However shared frameworks are quicker and easier to develop in face-to-face settings, but as soon as the basis for it exists, the influence of geographic dispersal is reduced.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tesis ondersoek die kwessie van organisatoriese kennisskepping in geografies verspreide situasies. Die eerste hoofstuk beskryf Nonaka se model van organisatoriese kennisskepping en Weick se teorie van organisatoriese singewing. In die tweede hoofstuk word die fenomeen van geografies-verspreide organisering van nader beskou en bespreek in terme van die effek wat dit het op sosialisering, organisatoriese kultuur en vertroue. In die derde hoofstuk word die kommunikasie-dinamika in geografies verspreide organisasies ondersoek met 'n fokus op "Media Richness Theory" en die impak wat dit het op teorieë van afstandskommunikasie. <p> Knowledge sharing among software developers enhances the success of software design and implementation. However, there is an inadequate understanding of how communication factors such as negotiation and reciprocity impact the knowledge-sharing process within software development teams and between team leaders and team members. The present study used a correlational research design to test the relationship between the reciprocity (i.e., communication between team members), negotiation (i.e., communication between team leaders and team members), and knowledge sharing to determine whether different types of communication influence knowledge-sharing outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was used to collect data from a target population of software developers. The sample consisted of 85 software developers with a minimum of 2 years of experience working on software development teams. Multiple linear regression analyses were run to determine the extent to which the variables of negotiation, reciprocity, and knowledge sharing were related. The results indicated that the variables were significantly related, and 70% of knowledge sharing was the result of reciprocity-exchange of ideas and reciprocity-meetings. Team meetings and the open exchange of ideas between team members were found to be the most effective methods of reciprocity related to knowledge sharing among team members. Negotiation and team cohesiveness, however, were not significant to the knowledge-sharing process. The findings indicated that the process of knowledge sharing is more important than individual relationships between software development team members. Thus, from an organizational perspective, holding regular project meetings with all team members would be a more effective knowledge-sharing strategy than using team-building exercises to strengthen personal bonds between team members. Additional research is necessary to determine how software developers&rsquo; personal characteristics impact knowledge-sharing processes.</p><p>

The aim of the research is to prove the following hypothesis: If the software development industry moves towards industrialisation, then knowledge assets in the format of universal production templates will come into being. The research commences by providing background information on the state of practise of software engineering by giving an overview of the changes in the industry over the past four decades. The software development industry is consequently presented from the viewpoint of the proponents of a craftsmanship based approach to software development, and from the viewpoint of those proposing that industrialisation will offer a solution to the problems besetting the industry. In this discussion the terms industrialisation as well as economies of scale and scope are defined. Potential paths and drivers that will allow the industrialisation of the industry are presented – software factories as a path towards industrialisation, and cloud computing as a driver for industrialisation. In order to supply a knowledge management perspective, the theories of Ikujiro Nonaka and Max Boisot are presented. These theories assume different perspectives on the creation of organisational knowledge, but an attempt is made to reconcile the differences between the two theories. Particular attention is paid to the economic meaning and implications of knowledge, information and data as factors of production. The concept of knowledge assets are examined in detail, and placed into the context of software development. In the last chapter the research and conclusions of the previous chapters are consolidated, to prove the central hypothesis of this work.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the emergence of Web 2.0 (social network platforms) some Knowledge Management theorists saw the potential for incorporating its collaborative and networking features in Knowledge Management Systems. However, the consensus is that harnessing Web 2.0 features for Knowledge Management is still in its infancy and according to some it seems that Web 2.0 success in the social sphere is hard to translate to the work context. The thesis argues that Web 2.0 primarily facilitates Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) and in this way indirectly contributes to Organisational Knowledge Management. Furthermore not all Web 2.0 features are equally useful in facilitating Personal Knowledge Management. The thesis identifies the group features of social network platforms as the prime locations for networking and learning. The thesis is theoretically based on Cheong and Tsui's PKM 2.0 model, in particular the Interpersonal Knowledge Transferring phase that in turn is based on Nonaka's SECI model of knowledge conversion. The thesis starts out with considering the distinction and relationship between Organisational Knowledge Management (OKM) and Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). Thereafter Cheong and Tsui's PKM 2.0 model is described as well as Nonaka's SECI model. The Web 2.0 phenomenon is introduced through a literature review of various studies on the usefulness of social network platforms and the group features are specifically highlighted. A survey is conducted among users of a particular Web 2.0 group feature, based on questions developed from the SECI and PKM 2.0 models. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the group features of Web 2.0 social network platforms are useful for Knowledge Management, because it is indeed a component of users' Personal Knowledge Management.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sekere Kennisbestuursteoretici het met die opkoms van Web 2.0 (sosiale netwerk-platforms) die moontlikheid waargeneem om die samewerks- en netwerk-funksionaliteit van Web 2.0 platforms met bestaande Kennisbestuurstelsels te integreer. Die konsensus is egter dat sulke pogings nog veel tekortskiet en sommige waarnemers meen dat dit baie moeilik sal wees om Web 2.0 se sukses in die sosiale sfeer in die werksplek in te span. Die tesis argumenteer dat Web 2.0 hoofsaaklik Persoonlike Kennisbestuur (PKB) fasiliteer en langs hierdie ompad 'n bydrae lewer tot Organisatoriese Kennisbestuur (OKB). Verder lewer alle funksionaliteite van Web 2.0 nie 'n bruikbare bydra tot Kennisbestuur nie, maar is dit hoofsaaklik die groepsfunksies wat bruikbaar is in terme van netwerking en leer. This research addresses the problem of developing computer-based systems to support the understanding of information by executive level users. The approach taken is based on the use of prior knowledge in the form of knowledge (cognitive) structures to understand new information. The knowledge structures used are case, schemata, concepts, and semantic networks. A system architecture for supporting information understanding, the Understanding Support System (USS), was developed and was implemented on an Apple Mac using HyperCard software. The USS is implemented in an object-oriented architecture using hypertext organization methods to support the cognitive process of associative information development and retrieval. Node and link representation and associative schemes are used to store and represent cognitive structures in the form of networks of interlinked nodes of knowledge. These networks are treated as individual units by the USS. The current system supports a single user for: (1) building mental representations, (2) using prior knowledge in the form of knowledge nodes, knowledge structures, and case knowledge, (3) using knowledge structures for knowledge base access, and (4) navigation of the knowledge base through links that associate knowledge nodes in the cognitive structures. Eventually the USS can support use of a corporate knowledge base by many users. An evaluation of the USS based on human-computer research methodologies for systems development is discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe how journalists do research for their articles and whether there is a need to create a knowledge bank of the material that journalists use for writing these articles. I also looked at how knowledge management could be used at a daily newspaper to add value to the information used by the journalists. The thesis is based on four interviews with journalists, a literature review and a practical project. I helped a journalist with his information seeking and later tried to organize the material. This project gave me an understanding of how varying the material that journalists use is and how difficult it would be to try to organize it in order to create an organizational knowledge resource of the material. The study shows that journalists use a lot of information in their work and a big part of their job consists of information seeking. A lot of the retrieved information is not used more than once. The study shows that if the material was organized and made available for other journalists at the newspaper, it would make journalists work more effective. The results also show that there are some knowledge management tools available at the newspaper but these are not used for knowledge management purposes. Journalists also need to change their way of thinking about their profession from the industrial era to the information and knowledge era in order to make knowledge management succeed and benefit the organization and its employees.<br>Uppsatsnivå: D

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In an effort to streamline operations and focus on what they regard as core activities, a growing number of organizations from both developed and developing countries are increasingly looking to outsource their software development and maintenance activities to lower cost countries such as India and China, this is evidenced by the phenomenal growth in India’s software industry and the number of major overseas IT companies establishing subsidiaries and relocating their Research and Development operations to India’s high-tech cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune. With the mere size of their populations standing at over a billion people each, supported by their governments, Indian and Chinese business have been able to leverage this population advantage producing a large pool of software engineers, technical specialists and back office workers to cater for the talent demands of the world. While the actual software development process might be non-core to many organizations, it however yields software applications that drive critical business processes and embed valuable organizational knowledge. The handing over of software development operations by an organization to a third party poses a risk of creating a dependency and exposing vital business knowledge to competition thereby compromising its competitive edge. Both the people that participate in software development projects and the software products these people develop possess knowledge which need to be secured and leveraged to enable the continued success of an organization. Securing these knowledge artefacts and the knowledge created by the software development lifecycle process cannot be left to chance, therefore the success of an organization’s software development activities needs to be measured largely on its ability to secure knowledge assets that derive from such process and the leveraging of such knowledge to drive organizational strategy and yield new knowledge. This thesis is premised on the fact that knowledge is the one competitive advantage that separates successful nations from failed states and one dominant force that prevails across all successful economies in the 21st century, hence the notion of a knowledge economy. The study seeks to understand the importance of the role played by knowledge in an outsourced software development engagement and how knowledge management affects the success of this engagement. By exploring the business drivers that spur organizations to outsource their IT activities, the software development lifecycle, the different outsource models available to organizations and the inherent risks surrounding knowledge loss, the thesis seeks to gain an understanding and the criticality of managing knowledge within an outsourced software development context and the strategies that organizations can utilize to deliver on outsourcing promises with minimal risk.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ten einde hulle werksaamhede meer vaartbelyn te maak en om ingestel te bly op dit wat hulle as kernbedrywighede beskou, kyk al hoe meer organisasies in ontwikkelde en ontwikkelende lande na die moontlikheid om die ontwikkeling en instandhouding van hulle sagteware uit te kontrakteer na lande soos Indië en China, waar dit goedkoper gedoen kan word as tuis. Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.<br>We are in the final stages of a transition from the industrial era to the information era. Some may argue that we are already there. The impact of this transition is felt in all spheres of everyday life, it is present in shifting paradigms and it fuels constant waves of change. In attempting to master this changing world of the last few decades, academics and practitioners focused their attention on the management of knowledge in organisations. The concept of knowledge has been an elusive one for two thousand years and introducing the ideas of management and organisation to this already blurred notion brings about more distortion. This elusiveness is ever-present when organisational knowledge management is written about, presented or discussed. There always seems to be a duality in its nature – on the one end of the spectrum, the manageability of knowledge itemised as “thing” and on the other end the unmanageability of “flows” creating knowledge. There is a distinct discourse equating knowledge to information. These concepts are used interchangeably and there is a strong focus on the use of technology to manage knowledge stocks. In other treatises, we are constantly reminded about the inherent complexities of knowledge, humans, relationships and how people, individually and collectively, create meaning. This thesis sets out to determine whether knowledge should be seen as a manageable item or whether it is more complex, a flow, that might be guided and nurtured but never “managed”; or whether, it is in fact, both a “thing” and a “flow”. With neither theory testing nor theory development in mind, the thesis is a journey into the existing epistemological literature, investigating various views on and typologies of knowledge, aiming to add value through interpretation. As a comparative study, the thesis discusses the views of authors on knowledge management and sense making. Following the comparison of “thing” and “flow”, the thesis concludes by likening the research question to a similar paradox of light – knowledge should always be managed as a “thing” and a “flow” similar to light being both a particle and a wave.

This thesis examines causal discovery within datasets, in particular observational datasets where normal experimental manipulation is not possible. A number of machine learning techniques are examined in relation to their use of knowledge and the insights they can provide regarding the situation under study. Their use of prior knowledge and the causal knowledge produced by the learners are examined. Current causal learning algorithms are discussed in terms of their strengths and limitations. The main contribution of the thesis is a new causal learner LUMIN that operates with a polynomial time complexity in both the number of variables and records examined. It makes no prior assumptions about the form of the relationships and is capable of making extensive use of available domain information. This learner is compared to a number of current learning algorithms and it is shown to be competitive with them.

<p> Measuring knowledge management performance was one of, if not the most challenging knowledge management activities. This study suggested using intellectual capital as a proxy for knowledge management performance in evaluating its impact on organizational performance. The Value Added Intellectual Coefficient model was employed to measure intellectual capital. Although being used widely in research, the model had its limitations. Also, for intellectual capital measurement, there was a lack of guidelines supported by empirical evidence or best practices. The present study aimed to test the classic and a modified version of this model, and based on the results, shed light on whether the classic version was good enough or the modified one should be highly recommended. The financial fundamental and market data of 425 randomly selected publicly listed firms were collected, and the structural equation modeling technique was employed to test the models. Chi-square difference test was performed to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference between these two models. The results of the tests indicated that the difference between them was insignificant. Therefore, it was concluded that the classic model is adequate, and it can be used effectively to measure intellectual capital. Adding two new efficiency elements&mdash;research and development efficiency and relational capital efficiency&mdash;in the model did not provide any significant benefit.</p>

In this paper, an idea for integrating research in information retrieval and scientific communication in LIS is proposed. This idea is based on the generation and use of subject maps for documents in a specific domain. A subject map, as defined in this paper, is a kind of representation of the important subjects in the target domain and their mutual conceptual relationships, on a two-dimensional graph. The map can be used in many applications in information retrieval and scientific communication. For example, it can be used as an interface in information retrieval systems, to display terms and their relationships in thesauri, and as a tool to explore research and developments of a scientific discipline. The method to generate subject maps is also described. The method comprises four processes: document preparation, information extraction, map generation, and information visualization. All these processes are based on concepts and technologies from both the domains of information retrieval and scientific communication.
