La popularité des réseaux sociaux a rapidement augmenté au cours de la dernière décennie. Selon Statista, environ 2 milliards d'utilisateurs utiliseront les réseaux sociaux d'ici janvier 2018 et ce nombre devrait encore augmenter au cours des prochaines années. Tout en gardant comme objectif principal de connecter le monde, les réseaux sociaux jouent également un rôle majeur dans la connexion des commerçants avec les clients, les célébrités avec leurs fans, les personnes ayant besoin d'aide avec les personnes désireuses d'aider, etc.. Le succès de ces réseaux repose principalement sur l'information véhiculée ainsi que sur la capacité de diffusion des messages dans les réseaux sociaux. Notre recherche vise à modéliser la diffusion des messages ainsi qu'à extraire et à représenter l'information des messages dans les réseaux sociaux. Nous introduisons d'abord une approche de prédiction de la diffusion de l'information dans les réseaux sociaux. Plus précisément, nous prédisons si un tweet va être re-tweeté ou non ainsi que son niveau de diffusion. Notre modèle se base sur trois types de caractéristiques: basées sur l'utilisateur, sur le temps et sur le contenu. Nous avons évalué notre modèle sur différentes collections correspondant à une douzaine de millions de tweets. Nous avons montré que notre modèle améliore significativement la F-mesure par rapport à l'état de l'art, à la fois pour prédire si un tweet va être re-tweeté et pour prédire le niveau de diffusion. La deuxième contribution de cette thèse est de fournir une approche pour extraire des informations dans les microblogs. Plusieurs informations importantes sont incluses dans un message relatif à un événement, telles que la localisation, l'heure et les entités associées. Nous nous concentrons sur l'extraction de la localisation qui est un élément primordial pour plusieurs applications, notamment les applications géospatiales et les applications liées aux événements. Nous proposons plusieurs combinaisons de méthodes existantes d'extraction de localisation dans des tweets en ciblant des applications soit orientées rappel soit orientées précision. Nous présentons également un modèle pour prédire si un tweet contient une référence à un lieu ou non. Nous montrons que nous améliorons significativement la précision des outils d'extraction de lieux lorsqu'ils se focalisent sur les tweets que nous prédisons contenir un lieu. Notre dernière contribution présente une base de connaissances permettant de mieux représenter l'information d'un ensemble de tweets liés à des événements. Nous combinons une collection de tweets de festivals avec d'autres ressources issues d'Internet pour construire une ontologie de domaine. Notre objectif est d'apporter aux utilisateurs une image complète des événements référencés au sein de cette collection<br>The popularity of online social networks has rapidly increased over the last decade. According to Statista, approximated 2 billion users used social networks in January 2018 and this number is still expected to grow in the next years. While serving its primary purpose of connecting people, social networks also play a major role in successfully connecting marketers with customers, famous people with their supporters, need-help people with willing-help people. The success of online social networks mainly relies on the information the messages carry as well as the spread speed in social networks. Our research aims at modeling the message diffusion, extracting and representing information and knowledge from messages on social networks. Our first contribution is a model to predict the diffusion of information on social networks. More precisely, we predict whether a tweet is going to be diffused or not and the level of the diffusion. Our model is based on three types of features: user-based, time-based and content-based features. Being evaluated on various collections corresponding to dozen millions of tweets, our model significantly improves the effectiveness (F-measure) compared to the state-of-the-art, both when predicting if a tweet is going to be retweeted or not, and when predicting the level of retweet. The second contribution of this thesis is to provide an approach to extract information from microblogs. While several pieces of important information are included in a message about an event such as location, time, related entities, we focus on location which is vital for several applications, especially geo-spatial applications and applications linked to events. We proposed different combinations of various existing methods to extract locations in tweets targeting either recall-oriented or precision-oriented applications. We also defined a model to predict whether a tweet contains a location or not. We showed that the precision of location extraction tools on the tweets we predict to contain a location is significantly improved as compared when extracted from all the tweets.Our last contribution presents a knowledge base that better represents information from a set of tweets on events. We combined a tweet collection with other Internet resources to build a domain ontology. The knowledge base aims at bringing users a complete picture of events referenced in the tweet collection (we considered the CLEF 2016 festival tweet collection)

<p>I dagens allt mer globaliserade företagsklimat är det viktigt att på ett optimalt sätt hantera informations- och kunskapsrelaterade frågor. I takt med den ständiga förändringen som pågår så har begreppet Knowledge Management (KM) blivit ett populärt ämnesområde. KM kan enligt oss vara hur en organisation arbetar och hanterar kunskap för att kunna öka sin konkurrenskraft.</p><p>Vårt syfte med denna kandidatuppsats har varit att undersöka hur den mestadels engelsk-språkiga litteraturen inom ämnesområdet KM går att applicera på svenska organisationer. Detta med avsikt på att kunna mäta en organisations KM-tillstånd. Vårt forskningsarbete har även målsättningen att generera förändrings- och förbättringsförslag åt en global orga-nisation som vårt referensföretag.</p><p>För att uppfylla syftet har vi valt att utföra en surveyundersökning som bygger på Bukowitz och Williams bok, The Knowledge Management Fieldbook (1999). Med hjälp av denna lit-teratur kan läsaren undersöka och mäta hur en vald organisation hanterar kunskap.</p><p>Vår forskning visar att den valda undersökningsformen går att använda på svenska organi-sationer men att den besitter vissa brister. Bland förslagen vi tagit fram för att förbättra surveyundersökningen finns förändringar i språkbruket och möjlighet att dela upp under-sökningen i mindre avsnitt.</p><p>Trots undersökningens brister har vi fått fram ett antal förändrings- och förbättringsförslag åt vårt referensföretag. Surveyundersökningen indikerar bland annat på att respondenterna saknar en helhetssyn och en förståelse för organisationens syn på KM. Vidare tyder resulta-tet på att organisationen hade kunnat bli ännu mer konkurrenskraftig genom att tillsätta specialisttjänster i form av till exempel en Knowledge Manager.</p><br><p>The environment of organisations is today becoming more globalized and it is important to optimize the ways of handling with information and knowledge. In this constant change that is going on has the concept Knowledge Management (KM) become popular. KM can according to us be how an organisation work and handle knowledge in order to strengthen their competitiveness.</p><p>Our purpose with this paper has been to examine how KM is described in the, in most parts, English literature and how it can be applied to Swedish organisations in order to measure the KM-condition. The aim of this research project is also to generate changes and improvement suggestions for a global organisation such as our reference organisation.</p><p>In order to obtain our purpose we have chosen to execute a survey investigation that is built on “The Knowledge Management Fieldbook” (1999) authored by Bukowitz and Wil-liams. With this literature the reader is given an opportunity to investigate and measure how a chosen organisation handles knowledge.</p><p>The research shows that the chosen investigation form is possible to use on Swedish or-ganisations even though there are some shortages. Among our proposals, to improve the survey investigation, are a change of language use and to make it possible for the investiga-tor to divide the investigation into smaller parts.</p><p>Despite the shortages in the investigation have we been able to produce a number of sug-gestions for our reference organisation to work with. These suggestions are for example about changes and improvement in KM handling. The survey investigation indicate among other things that the respondents lack an overall picture and understanding for the organi-sations vision of KM. Furthermore our result indicates that the organisation could be able to become even more competitive through appointing specialist posts like for example a Knowledge Manager.</p>

Abstract:
Promoting knowledge sharing has long been regarded as a very important aspect of the management of knowledge. However, knowledge sharing has its challenges due to the special nature of knowledge. Based on this, the researcher argues that it is knowledge seeking rather than knowledge sharing that plays a crucial role in knowledge management. However, there is no clear definition for knowledge seeking in existing literature. In the few studies of knowledge seeking research, knowledge has been viewed as a noun and as such knowledge seeking has been seen as no different to information seeking. The aim of this research has been to explore the knowledge seeking process in the workplace in order to conceptualise knowledge seeking by developing a theoretical model. A review of the literature concerning knowledge seeking has been conducted in order to clarify the concept of knowledge seeking. From the interpretivist’s perspective, a qualitative research approach has been taken, in which sense-making theory is employed as a methodological guide. Time-line interviews were carried out with construction engineers in China to collect primary data, and Template analysis was utilized. Based on the literature, this thesis defined knowledge seeking as a learning process, which consists of three major themes: experiential learning, information seeking and problem solving, based on which a preliminary framework was developed. Twenty six engineers were successfully interviewed. The findings from the data confirmed the links between the themes. Further codes were also identified to develop a final template, which evolved to a theoretical model illustrating the knowledge seeking process in the workplace. By promoting knowledge seeking rather than knowledge sharing, this research contributed innovatory insight into existing KM research. The new concept of knowledge seeking and the theoretical model developed thereafter contribute to knowledge by providing a theoretical framework for further research in this area. The specific combination of time-line interviews and template analysis has demonstrated good results in this research. Collecting primary data from China, this research applied Western theories onto engineers within a Chinese context, which has contributed to KM research in China. These contributions will result in many practical implications for KM practices.

Abstract:
Information Systems and software embed knowledge about the domain in which they operate. This knowledge can be very useful to various stakeholders in the organization, including developers, users, and other organizational workers. However, it is not readily accessible and usually intertwined with implementation details. Making this knowledge available would be beneficial for several reasons. In particular: 1) software often needs to be updated to reflect changes in the organization; this causes the embedded knowledge to stay current; 2) the actual system development process often incorporates the use of methods and techniques to properly record domain knowledge; 3) knowledge embedded in software is already available in a digital format; and 4) the tools typically used to manage system development (e.g. source and version controls) can be effective in management and control of knowledge. However, despite all these potential advantages, embedded knowledge is usually not readily accessible to knowledge seekers in the organization. This situation impedes the possible utilization of software-embedded knowledge. The objective of this dissertation is to develop ways of making software-embedded domain knowledge available, accessible, and usable to organizational users. The research challenge is to identify what domain knowledge is involved in systems development, to find ways to formalize it, and to demonstrate that it can be explicitly represented in developed systems. The research covers three main aspects: 1) identifying and formalizing embedded domain knowledge obtained in systems development processes; 2) developing methods for representing this knowledge formally to facilitate its use during and after system development and, 3) demonstrate how this knowledge can be explicitly represented in the final IS implementation code. The first aspect, namely the nature of embedded knowledge, is addressed by analyzing the requirements engineering, systems analysis, and enterprise modeling literature in order to identify the main constructs used for domain representation. Formalization is then accomplished using ontological analysis. The feasibility of explicit representation is attained by suggesting a Model Driven Architectures (MDA) where the formalized knowledge is used to drive processing in the system. Usability and usefulness of the ideas are demonstrated in two ways. First, case studies and examples show how domain knowledge acquired during extant methods of systems analysis can be represented using the proposed representation constructs. Second, a sample system design, supporting explicit domain knowledge representation in system code, is proposed and demonstrated via a simple prototype.

In order to satisfy increasing demand for better, smarter, more flexible land resource information an alternative form of representation is proposed. That representation is to be achieved through the coupling of Expert System methods and Geographic Information Systems. Instead of representing resource information using entities such as soil types, defined by rigid boundaries on a map, a more fluid presentation is proposed. Individual resource attributes will be represented by surfaces that describe their probability of occurrence, at a number of levels, across a landscape. Such flexible representations, which are designed to better capture the mental models behind their creation, are capable of being combined and synthesised to answer a wide range of resource queries.An investigation of methods of knowledge representation in a number of fields of research, led to the belief that a Bayesian Network provides a representational calculus that is appropriate to the "fuzzy" and imprecise conceptual models used in resource assessment. The fundamental mathematical principles of such networks have been tailored to provide a representation that is in tune with the intuitive processes of a surveyor's thinking.Software has been written to demonstrate the method and tested on a variety of data sets from Australia and overseas. These tests and demonstrations have used a range of densities of knowledge and range of acuity in evidential data. In general the results accord with the mental models used as drivers. A number of operational facets of the method have been highlighted during these demonstrations and attention has been given to a discussion of them.

In particular, the class of all problems possessing statistical zero-knowledge proofs (SZK) was shown to have complete problems characterized by the statistical distance (Sahai and Vadhan [JACM, 20031) and entropy difference (Goldreich and Vadhan [CCC, 19991) of a pair of efficiently samplable distributions. This characterization has been extremely beneficial in understanding the computational complexity of languages with zero-knowledge proofs and deriving new applications from such languages. In this thesis, we further study the relation between zero-knowledge proofs and information theory. We show the following results: 1. Two additional complete problems for SZK characterized by other information theoretic notions-triangular discrimination and Jensen-Shannon divergence.<br>These new complete problems further expand the regime of parameters for which the STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE PROBLEM is complete for SZK. We further show that the parameterized STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE PROBLEM, for a regime of parameters in which this problem is not known to be in SZK, still share many properties with SZK. Specifically, its hardness implies the existence of one-way functions, and it and its complement have a constant-round public coin interactive protocol (i.e., AM n coAM). 2. The hardness of a problem related to the ENTROPY DIFFERENCE PROBLEM implies the existence of multi-collision resistant hash functions (MCRH). We also demonstrate the usefulness of such hash functions by showing that the existence of MCRH implies the existence of constant-round statistically hiding (and computationally binding) commitment schemes. 3. We initiate the study of zero-knowledge in the model of interactive proofs of proximity (IPP). We show efficient zero-knowledge IPPs for several problems.<br>We also show problems with efficient IPPs, for which every zero-knowledge IPP must be inefficient. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 120-125).<br>This dissertation focuses on a knowledge audit that was conducted in a research organisation (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. A knowledge and information audit provides a framework that examines the ways in which an organisation handles and leverages its knowledge and information assets. The audit examines ways an organisation creates, generates, disseminates, stores and shares its knowledge and information resources. In the process, the gaps, sinks, and duplications are revealed; providing useful information that can support decision making and knowledge management initiatives to enhance organisational productivity and effectiveness. This relates specifically to developing relevant information and knowledge strategies, to understanding an organisation's knowledge and information needs and aligning these with the right tools that will facilitate efficiency in an organisation's core engagements. This knowledge and information audit was exploratory in nature and sought to understand the current information and knowledge environment of the organisation. It was anticipated that the results would augment and feed into the current reflections of the organisation on how to leverage its knowledge and information assets and improve efficiency and remain competitive in the market place. The audit was carried out at PLAAS, a research unit that produces considerable research output based on the empirical studies that the staff conducts. The organisation, in addition, is actively involved in forums that debate and engage with various players in the land and agrarian sector in South Africa. These engagements are at a level where they influence policy matters related to land and agrarian matters in the new South Africa. This audit sought to examine what information and knowledge supports core engagements of the staff, what information and knowledge they use, where they find it and in the process establish the gaps, and challenges staff face as they carry out their core research duties. The audit adopted a qualitative approach to research, where interviews were the primary source of data collection. An interview guide was developed to facilitate the data collection and twelve (12) interviews were conducted. The themes, recurring items, and unique views that emerged guided the analysis. Recommendations to improve the current knowledge and information environment took the form of a 'Road Map for Knowledge Management' that the organisation can adopt to enhance the current operating system. The knowledge and information audit showed that the organisation is very knowledge-oriented and extensively engaged in knowledge work even though this is not explicitly referred to as 'Knowledge Management'. Many shortcomings were identified with regard to the knowledge and information system that is currently in place and these specifically relate to: the organisational structure, organisational memory, organisational technology infrastructure, infrastructure, knowledge sharing activities, and the organisational culture. The results suggested that the organisation needs to strengthen aspects in these areas in order to remain efficient and support the staff in their daily work activities. The outcomes further suggest that knowledge audit methodologies (as an area of knowledge management) need to develop and be standardized and that more research needs to be conducted in this field of knowledge management.

The aim of this study is to locate if there are some common problems connected to knowledge management systems (KMSs) within organizations. This thesis begins with an introduction to knowledge management (KM) and knowledge management systems, followed by a presentation of previous research in the field of KM problematics. To find these possible issues that may prevent an effective use of KMSs within organizations, we will study contemporary literature and perform some complementary interviews. The questions formulated are addressed to participants from the organization Tieto, at their office in Lund. The questions are kept to a restricted number to gather replies that collect the main answers of relevance. The results from the literature review are then compared to the interviews. The main conclusion of this study is that the organizational culture may affect the possible occurrence of KMSs that suffer from usability problems, which causes the knowledge sharing to be inadequate. Finally; a picture of the problem areas concerning KMSs within organizations arise and some resolutions along with recommendations are presented.

Information, both print and online is growing at an exponential rate. The ability to locate individual items of information has not kept pace. Once this information has been brought to bear on a problem, the resulting knowledge is lost. It is difficult to organize and store the results of an information search. We propose a tool to assist in the resolution of these problems. DocKMan's knowledge base builder. Through the use of a hierarchical concept organization and a frame-based inheritance scheme, we believe we have found a means of structuring information which allows easier browsing and retrieval of knowledge. The combination this 'structuring tool' with a text analysis tool facilitates the construction of organized repositories of knowledge or 'knowledge bases'. Text can now be analyzed for specific pieces of information which are then inserted into the appropriate area of the hierarchy. Such a set of tools will prove especially useful to knowledge workers in technically oriented fields.

The expanding availability of on-line information sources, such as on-line documents, corpora, and the World Wide Web, introduces some challenges. Most notably, users must search through this material to find high-quality, relevant information. This is the domain of information retrieval. Alternatively, knowledge bases present information in a very compact and structured representation. Unfortunately, their creation is labor intensive. In order to bridge the gap between the amount of structure in the information processed by information retrieval and knowledge engineering techniques, the author presents TAKODO, a tool and a framework designed for both (i) facilitating the extraction of knowledge from unstructured text, possibly to aid in the process of creating a knowledge base, and (ii) retrieving information from natural language texts and the knowledge base, using each to their mutual advantage. TAKODO integrates several existing applications, among them a question answering system, called Text Analyzer, and a frame-based knowledge management tool, called the Knowledge Organizer, with the additional support of corpus linguistic techniques.

This research investigated the question of whether automatic or system-generated information classification methods can help humans better manage information. A series of four experiments were conducted; they investigated the usability (i.e., usefulness) of two automatic approaches to information classification, the concept space approach and a Kohonen-based SOM approach in the context of information retrieval. The concept space approach was evaluated in three different domains: Electronic Brainstorming (EBS) sessions, the Internet, and medical literature (the CancerLit collection). The Kohonen-based SOM approach was evaluated in the Internet and medical literature (CancerLit) domains only. In each case, the approach under investigation was compared with existing systems in order to demonstrate performance viability. The basic premise that information management, in particular information retrieval, can be successfully supported by system-based information classification techniques and that humans would find such techniques viable and useful was supported by the experiments. The concept space approach was more successful than the Kohonen-based SOM approach. After modifications to the algorithms based on user feedback from the EBS experiments had been made, users found the concept space approach results to be comparable (in the Internet study) or superior (in the CancerLit study) to existing information classification systems. The key future enhancement will be incorporation of better ways to identify document descriptors through syntactic and semantic front-end processing. The Kohonen-based SOM approach was considered difficult to use in all but one specialized case (the dynamic SOM created as part of the CancerLit prototype). This can probably be attributed to the fact that its associative organization does not match with the standard mental models (hierarchical and alphabetic) for information classification.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Knowledge management is a fragmented and ambiguous management practice. This is evident from the plethora of definitions available for this field. The premise of this study is that different discourse patterns in knowledge management also contribute to the ambiguity. Four theoretical lenses describe the typical discourses that are associated with the formation of management practices, namely management innovation, umbrella construction, management fashion cycles and institutionalisation of management practice. The following propositions are indicative of the types of discourses involved – the rationale, business outcome, management niche, solution definitions and the means provided for the enactment of the practice. The discourses of seven proponents were analysed according to the above, viz. Verna Allee, Nancy Dixon, Leif Edvinsson, Ikujiro Nonaka, Laurence Prusak, David Snowden and Mathieu Weggeman. Three main patterns were identified based on the manner in which the discourses associated with the four theoretical lenses manifest in the analysed discourses. These patterns represent three different conceptualisations of knowledge management, namely - (i) Knowledge management as a meta-practice framework: the focus is on the assimilation and synthesis of the various knowledge-based practices that are part of other management practices (such as quality management), or practices that originate from fluid initiatives in organisations (e.g. the role of the librarian transforming to become a information broker), or practices that are defined through systematic experimentation (such as the potential of social media for intelligence analysis). (ii) Knowledge management as a platform and catalyst for systemic management innovation: the quest is to define new approaches that are appropriate to manage organisations as complex knowledge-based systems. These approaches should supersede management practices still rooted in Newtonian or mechanistic thinking. Knowledge management is regarded to be a revolutionary practice that proposes, conceptualises and diffuses such new approaches, e.g. value network management (Verna Allee) and the Cynefin framework (David Snowden). (iii) Knowledge management as a master idea or master narrative: this knowledge management discourse is about the theorisation of novel structural arrangements that emerge in organisations as a response to the new requirements of a knowledge-driven economy. This theorisation influences the thinking, premises and practices of various management fields, such as strategic planning, human resource management and organisational design.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kennisbestuur is ‘n gefragmenteerde en dubbelsinnige bestuurspraktyk. Dit is duidelik uit die menigvuldige definisies wat voorgehou word vir die veld. Die uitgangspunt van hierdie studie is dat verskillende diskoerspatrone in kennisbestuur ook tot die dubbelsinnigheid bydra. Vier teoretiese lense beskryf die tipiese diskoerse wat geassosieer word met die vorming van bestuurspraktyke, naamlik bestuursinnovasie, sambreelkonstruksies, bestuursmodesiklusse en die institutionalisering van bestuurspraktyke. This paper examines the challenges that the success of library and information systems design and implementation is now generating. It makes a distinction between management and mobilization and argues that the organizational success of the interrelated fields of knowledge management and in-formation systems (KM/IS) rests on strengthening (1) their descriptive understanding of how individuals in organizations make their own choices about accessing, using and sharing knowledge and (2) corre-sponding prescriptive recommendations for adapting the technical designs of KM/IS to best accommo-date those choices. It is success that has created this need, in that every major trend in KM/IS adds to user choices and reduces institutional control; the library now has no locked doors and experts can â meetâ wherever they are and whenever they want. Blogs bypass all the formal traditions, practices, edi-torial policies, verification procedures and protections against libel and misrepresentation of traditional print media. The frequent use of the term â democratic journalismâ to describe the blog phenomenon (George, 2006) in itself implies that traditional journalism is non-democratic. While KM/IS is not driven by a search for profits in the mass consumer market, it shares the same basic aim as leaders in consumer electronics, mobile data services, and even the gaming field. It is a commitment of institutional funds, whether from research grants or in-house sources, to innovate through information technology. The pur-pose of the innovation is to enable and encourage new behaviors. Knowledge management is focused in this regard on knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Information services are generally more centered on individual information-seeking and learning. When user choices determine the adoption and impact of this type pf innovation, then obviously it is essential to understand the foundations and dynamics of choice.

Today’s online content increases at an alarmingly rate which exceeds users’ ability to consume such content. Modern search techniques allow users to enter keyword queries to find content they wish to see. However, such techniques break down when users freely browse the internet without knowing exactly what they want. Users may have to invest an unnecessarily long time reading content to see if they are interested in it. Automatic text summarization helps relieve this problem by creating synopses that significantly reduce the text while preserving the key points. Steffen Lyngbaek created the SPORK summarization pipeline to solve the content overload in Reddit comment threads. Lyngbaek adapted the Opinosis graph model for extractive summarization and combined it with agglomerative hierarchical clustering and the Smith-Waterman algorithm to perform multi-document summarization on Reddit comments.This thesis presents WHISK as a pipeline for general multi-document text summarization based on SPORK. A generic data model in WHISK allows creating new drivers for different platforms to work with the pipeline. In addition to the existing Opinosis graph model adapted in SPORK, WHISK introduces two simplified graph models for the pipeline. The simplified models removes unnecessary restrictions inherited from Opinosis graph’s abstractive summarization origins. Performance measurements and a study with Digital Democracy compare the two new graph models against the Opinosis graph model. Additionally, the study evaluates WHISK’s ability to generate pull quotes from political discussions as summaries.

A great deal of research has been carried out on knowledge acquisition and storage, but there is still a distinct lack of research into knowledge presentation and communication. Information and knowledge presentation play a significant role in daily decision-making processes, when inappropriate decisions may result from inaccurate or poorly communicated information. The simplified, filtered coherent presentation of explicit knowledge can be instrumental to a successful, profitable and safety conscious business. Wates Construction is a major construction company and employs around 1300 people directly, as well as various subcontractors on different projects. Their current turn over is around £1billion, they are based in the UK and have branches in Ireland and Abu Dhabi. Wates realised their existing information system was inefficiently conveying information to its employees and the need to provide a simplified system, to assist staff's decision-making processes. Earlier IT professionals' attempts to make the system more usable had made no significant difference to its performance.

This shift in thinking relates that we are dynamic, self-organizing, complex systems which form an individual perception of our environment based on the relationships we identify between ourselves and the interrelated systems of data/information around us. Recognizing this shift, the research project associated with this thesis, utilizes interactive digital multimedia, or hypermedia, in the design of a set of tools with which to identify and illustrate these interrelated systems. It is the author's belief that once identified, these dynamic relationships will provide an ideal source of user-defined navigation of the group of interrelated objects. The dynamic qualities of hypermedia, which provide the author different modes of linking information of many different data types to one another, making it an ideal venue for the illustration and navigation of systemic relationships. The overall objective of this study is to analyze the document retrieval process and the main information retrieval (IR) concepts from the point of view of semiotics and design retrieval mechanisms based on the findings of the semiotic analysis of the retrieval situation. Semiotics is a discipline which studies 'sign systems' and how signs are exchanged in communication. The semiotic view of IR interaction presented in this dissertation views document retrieval as a kind of human communication process taking place in a social and cultural realm. The most important result of the semiotic model developed is the explication of the distinction between the knowledge production and transfer functions of document retrieval. The consequence of this finding is the conceptualization of the retrieval process as a dynamic and complex interplay between knowledge production and transfer tasks. It is hypothesised that, in the case of knowledge production, users of retrieval systems are interested in exploring new areas of the document collection which are not a priori known. Two knowledge based systems are developed based on the Okapi probabilistic retrieval system. The purpose of the retrieval systems designed is posited, in general terms, as to suggest the users new search areas of potential interest. This is achieved by treating the Inspec thesaurus as a semantic network, and applying a heuristic spreading activation technique to generate clusters of terms linked in the Inspec thesaurus. Each cluster or batch of terms is conceived as representing a part of the general search area defined by the initial user search terms. The main design objective here is to enable the user to identify new search areas from the term information contained in the batches. Two evaluation experiments were carried out with real users who had real information needs to test whether the batches were actually effective in defining search areas related to the original user queries and whether they were useful in pointing new areas which were potentially relevant to the users. A number of hypotheses related to the retrieval effectiveness of the knowledge based systems designed were also tested in the experiments. The main findings of the experiments indicate that: • the batches were useful in representing search domains relevant to the users' queries • in many cases the batches represented new ideas or new search domains to the users • the knowledge based systems had similar retrieval effectiveness in terms of precision as the Okapi system.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Storytelling is gaining recognition as areas of inquiry in management and organisation theory, but it is difficult to ascertain to what extent it is useful for organisational knowledge management. The thesis argues that although the existing literature on organisational storytelling is focused on the knowledge sharing aspects of storytelling, it is also useful for knowledge capturing. Whilst most knowledge management systems focus on explicit knowledge, the capture of tacit knowledge, which is hard to identify and manage, is a major challenge. The thesis uses Becerra-Fernandez et al.'s knowledge management framework to establish the requirements for knowledge management, and specifically highlighting the important role of tacit knowledge in organisational knowledge processes. Thereafter the role of storytelling in organisations is described by way of a literature review that includes the work of Snowden, Denning, Boje and Czarniawska. The outcome of this review is to show that storytelling is an informal process in organisations and that attempts to formalise it are still in its infancy. The various insights about the role of stories in organisations are then mapped against the requirements for knowledge management. It is shown that the storytelling literature almost wholly concentrates on the area of knowledge sharing and less so in the areas of knowledge discovery, capture and application. Since knowledge capture involves the externalisation of tacit knowledge and because tacit knowledge is more easily expressed in narrative form, it is argued that storytelling can also contribute to knowledge management as a way to capture knowledge.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Stories en vertellings word toenemend erken as areas van ondersoek in bestuurs- en organisasieteorie, maar dit is moeilik om te bepaal tot watter mate dit bruikbaar is vir organisatoriese kennisbestuur. This demand for performance improvement has now also reached the public sector. The Parliamentary Service responded to this demand by contracting consultants to design systems, policies and strategies in areas such as performance management, information technology, human resource management, financial resource management, training and development. Against this background, a case study was conducted within the Parliamentary Service to explore how organizational knowledge is created and transferred in practice. The theoretical lens for this case study is Nonaka's knowledge spiral, which puts emphasis on the creation, codification and diffusion of knowledge. The study explores processes and mechanisms of creating, transferring and capturing knowledge. This is done through the examination of strategies and systems for codifying tacit knowledge and storing that codified knowledge. Thereafter technological, cultural and organizational barriers that inhibit these efforts at sharing and storage of knowledge are identified. In the light of the above, implications for managing organizational knowledge are outlined. Lastly recommendations are made on how tacit and explicit knowledge could be efficiently managed within the sections and divisions of the Parliamentary Service. Data was gathered through interviews, observation and an analysis of organizational documents. These demonstrate that through the contracting of consultants and the involvement of internal stakeholders, parliamentary service has made remarkable progress in creating, sharing, and codifying knowledge of the performance management system at individual, group and organizational levels. This progress was made as the result of the institutionalization of a performance management forum, the use of workshops, the training of trainers and staff, the publications of newsletters, the development of manuals and the writing and submission of reports. However, it was also found that there are certain technological, cultural and organizational barriers to effective knowledge management. These include the lack of electronic databases, a culture of hoarding knowledge and the fact that knowledge management roles are not assigned. Based on the analysis of these technological, cultural and organizational barriers the -- study makes six recommendations for the management of organizational knowledge within the parliamentary service. These recommendations deal with the following issues: The codification of tacit knowledge, the creation of a knowledge repository, the promotion of a knowledge sharing culture, the institutionalization of knowledge sharing incentives, the establishment of a knowledge management unit, and the appointment of a chief knowledge officer.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kennisgebaseerde orgamsas1es moet aaneenlopend kennis skep, deel en kodifiseer om kompeterend te bly. Kennisgebaseerde prestasie-verbetering word toenemend 'n prioriteit in die openbare sektor. Die Parlementere Diensafdeling het, in 'n poging om prestasie te verbeter, konsultante gekontrakteer om sisteme, beleide en strategiee te ontwerp in areas soos prestasie-bestuur, informasie tegnologie, menslike hulpbronbestuur, finansiele bestuur, en opleiding en ontwikkeling. 'n Gevallestudie in die Parlementere Diensafdeling is teen hierdie agtergrond geloods om uit te vind hoe organisatoriese kennis in die praktyk geskep en oorgedra word. Die teoretiese lens vir hierdie gevallestudie is N onaka se kennis-spiraal, wat die skep, kodifiseer en deel van kennis benadruk. Die studie verken die prosesse en meganismes vir die skep en oordrag van kennis. Dit word gedoen deur die strategiee en sisteme vir die kodifisering van verswee kennis (tacit knowledge) en die stoor van die eksplisiete kennis (explicit knowledge) te ondersoek. Daama word die tegnologiese, kulturele en organisatoriese hindemisse wat die pogings tot die skep en deel van kennis frustreer gei"dentifiseer. In die lig van bogenoemde word implikasies vir die bestuur van kennis uitgestippel. Laastens word voorstelle gemaak vir die bestuur van kennis in spesifiek die Parlementere Diensafdeling. Data vir die studie is verkry deur onderhoude, observasie en die analise van organisatoriese dokumente. Hierdie demonstreer dat die Parlementere Diensafdeling, deur die kontraktering van konsultante en die betrek van interne belangehebbers, wel daarin geslaag het om kennis rondom die prestasiebesuurstelsel te skep, te deel en te kodifiseer op individuele, groep en organisasie vlak. Dit is hoofsaaklik toe te skryf aan die institusionalisering van 'n prestasiebestuursforum, die gebruik van werkswinkels, die opleiding van personeel, die publikasie van nuusbriewe, die ontwikkeling van handboeke en die skryf en indiening van verslae. Dit is egter ook gevind dat daar sekere tegnologiese, kulturele en organisatoriese hindemisse tot effektiewe kennisbestuur in die Parlementere Diensafdeling is. Hierdie sluit in die gebrek aan 'n elektroniese databasis, 'n kultuur van kennis-opgaarding, en die feit dat kennisbestuursrolle nie toegeken word nie. Die studie maak dan ses voorstelle vir die bestuur van organisatoriese kennis binne die Parlementere Diensafdeling gebaseer op die analise van hierdie tegnologiese, kulturele en organisatoriese faktore. Hierdie voorstelle gaan oor die volgende kwessies: Die kodifisering van verswee kennis (tacit knowledge), die skep van 'n kennis poel (knowledge repository), die bevordering van 'n kultuur van kennis deel, die institusionalisering van kennis insentiewe, die vestiging van 'n kennisbestuursafdeling, en die aanstelling van 'n Hoof Kennis Beampte (Chief Knowledge Officer).

An organisation's data, information, and knowledge is widely considered to be one of its greatest assets. As such, the capture, storage and dissemination of this asset is the focus of both academic and organisational efforts. This is true at the Airbus Group, the industrial partner of this thesis. Their Knowledge Management team invests in state-of-the-art tools and techniques, and actively participates in research in a bid to maximise their organisation's reuse of knowledge and ultimately their competitiveness. A successful knowledge management strategy creates a knowledgeable and wise workforce that ultimately benefits both the individual and the organisation. The dissemination of information and knowledge such that it is easily and readily accessible is one key aspect within such a strategy. Search engines are a typical means for information and knowledge dissemination yet, unlike the Internet, search within organisations (intranet or enterprise search) is frequently found lacking. This thesis contributes to this area of knowledge management. Research in the field of enterprise search has been shown to improve search through the application of context to expand search queries. The novel approach taken in this thesis takes this context and applies it visually, moving the search for information away from a text-based user interface towards a user interface that reflects the function and form of the product. The approach: model-based information navigation, is based on the premise that leveraging the visual and functional nature of engineers through a model-based user interface can improve information access and knowledge discovery. From the perspectives of information visualisation, engineering information management, product life-cycle management, and building information modelling, this thesis contributes through: The development of techniques that enable documents to be indexed against the product structure; The development of techniques for navigation within engineering three-dimensional virtual environments; The design of a range visual information object for the display of information within engineering three-dimensional virtual environments; The determination of the affordance of a model-based approach to information navigation. This thesis presents the development of a framework for model-based information navigation: a novel approach to finding information that places a three-dimensional representation of the product at the heart of searching document collections.

Alhoewel die Departement van Behuising ongeveer twee miljoen en sewe honderd duisend huise gelewer het, sedert 1994 was daar nog steeds uitdagings. Gepaardgaande met swak dienslewering, het die Departement ook gesukkel om bates soos inligting, kennis, inligtingstegnologie en menslike hulpbronne te bestuur.
