Abstract:
The arts have always had a profound impact on our lives: whether it be to express an idea, emotion, or as a way to communicate. Our worldly artistic experiences and knowledge date as far back as the Pre-historic period. So why is it that music, dance, drama, and visual arts, all cultural subjects so steeped in human history are, for the most part, always on the cutting block in educational curriculum? Why is artistic importance in the curriculum always viewed as mundane and devalued by so many policy makers? Following her best selling book Why Our Schools Need the Arts, author Jessica Hoffman Davis brings us Why Our High Schools Need the Arts. In arguing for an increase in arts courses within the educational curriculum as a way to engage all students and to alleviate the drop out rates of disenfranchised youth, Hoffman Davis offers vivid accounts from students, teachers, administrators “to provide the reader (the high school student, concerned parent, school administrator, teacher, arts education advocate, and/or policymaker) with the necessary information and perspective with which to argue for a prominent place for the arts in the reformation of high school curriculum” (p. 5).

Abstract:
Cambodia faces a significant challenge in developing a high-quality, capable, and productive workforce to meet the demands of its growing socio-economic development. However, many students dropped out of secondary and high school during the year. This study aims to investigate the impact of school drop-out among secondary school students on social development in Pong Tek commune, Romdoul district, and Svay Rieng province, Cambodia. The research methodology involved conducting interviews with 60 teachers who personally taught students at Hun Sen Pong Teuk High School. The result showed that some secondary school students still struggle with their studies. They have the highest travel expense deficit at 68%, lack study materials at 35%, and struggle to purchase clothes at 21%. The key factors that cause students to drop-out include internal factors (health and fitness, carelessness) and external factors (poverty, employment, late enrollment, violence, migration, distance from home to school, and social concerns). These student drop-out have a significant impact on social development, leading to issues such as illiteracy, job challenges, and a shift towards vocational training. In conclusion, many students drop-out of school for personal and social reasons, family problems, employment, and learning mismatch problems. After dropping-out of school, most of them lack adequate vocational training, which makes it difficult for them to find a job due to their hard work and low income. We recommend encouraging the students to pursue vocational training to enhance their skills, knowledge, and morality.

Abstract:
When students drop out of high school, this is often negative for their development as well as for society, as those who drop out have an increased risk of unemployment, health problems, and social problems. The aim of the present study was to synthesize knowledge regarding processes related to school dropout in general and school re-enrollment in particular. We performed a narrative review of the literature, focusing on Norwegian and Nordic studies, but we also included studies from other countries when relevant. We discussed the findings in relation to attachment theory and our own research on the topic. As a result, we identified five main challenges to upholding education-related goals in long-term dropout processes: lack of relatedness, overchallenged self-regulation capacity, compensating for a history of failure, wounded learner identities, and coping with prolonged stress. In conclusion, the identified challenges converged on the importance of belonging and social support. The prerequisite for addressing the challenges seemed to be the establishment of a trustful relationship between the students who have dropped out and at least one teacher, and preferably also with other supportive adults. These relationships may provide sufficient social support and aid the students’ motivation to complete school.

This study examined contributions of university education in the promotion of capacity building and social stability in Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study; descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 23000 academic staff of the public universities in South-East Nigeria. The sample comprised of 400 academic staff of the universities. The sample was composed using the simple random method. Data collected were analyzed using mean. Findings of the study showed that Nigeria university education contributes to capacity building through global practice on education con for all, provision of quality teaching infrastructure, access for students to ICT education, improved teaching methods, well equipped lecturers, proper management of universities, well-funded university research, properly motivated faculty; Nigeria university education contributes to social stability through skill and knowledge to navigate tensions, knowledge to avoid violence, help students build mental strength and resilience, help reduce child labor and early marriage, prevention of school-drop outs, help students navigate emotional and psychological trauma, help students navigate physical trauma, and help student make and become members of a peaceful society. The study concludes that Nigeria university education is contributing very little to human capacity building and development and as well social stability, this is linked to some intervening issues that has to do with peculiar issues with developing nations that could reduce the extent of social stability and human capacity development. The study therefore recommends that Nigeria government through the yearly budget address the insufficiency in Nigeria education system such as high rate of unemployment, illiteracy, ignorance, poor staff remuneration, poor infrastructure, poor education funding, strike actions that cripple education, political instability, poverty among others as a means to circumvent the issue of social stability and improve human capacity.

Abstract:
The centralization of learning through a platform called Geschool to support Learning-From-Home in Padang city gives significant impacts to students’ learning competency, especially for science subject. Geschool provides the same materials and try-outs to all students and each lesson is scheduled at one time for all schools in the city. At this rate, there is a concern that science lesson could not be presented as its nature which is a process of gaining new knowledge which usually include laboratory work. This could lead to difficulty achieving the goal of science learning according to Kurikulum 2013. To address this concern, our team initiated a program to assist science teachers in SMP Negeri 15 and 34 Padang to conduct simple experiments with easily found local materials. Each participant was equipped with a pocket book containing 18 experiments relevant to the material for seventh, eight, and ninth grade. After the program ended, participants were required to submit a video of science experiment they did at home. Students’ responses to quiz and presentations of their own science experiments were taken as a measurement of scientific inquiry. Feedbacks from participants indicate eagerness to include these simple experiments as a part of science lesson onward..

Abstract:
School burnout is a set of detrimental symptoms that include emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment. In children and adolescents it is associated with many physical and mental health problems, including heart diseases, hormonal disorders, disrupted sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and diminished life satisfaction. It corresponds with a higher likelihood of poor academic performance and drop-out rates. The text includes a theoretical analysis of factors corresponding with the development and maintenance of school burnout. The data presented in the literature proves that students dealing with extreme schoolwork overload, accompanied with poor time management, and unrealistic goals, faced with excessive family demands, experiencing disturbances in sleep habits, poor eating habits, and limited or no physical exercise are more prone to develop and sustain symptoms of school burnout. Besides the excessive workload and problems in relationships with parents and peers among risk factors there are usually mentioned feelings of lack of control over things, high demands, and pressure an individual experiences. Protective factors include social support and a positive school atmosphere. Application of knowledge concerning school burnout in real educational settings may result in increase of well-being and resilience of students, and decrease in symptoms of mental problems. It will also help create a meaningful school environment.

Abstract:
Children as the next generation of the nation, must be protected from childhood to adulthood. If a child has been in an environment of crime since childhood, that child can become a criminal in the future, and will disturb people's lives. It is wise for child protection to start in junior high school. Junior high school (SMP) as a place for children to gain knowledge, begins to learn to get along with peers, smaller friends or teachers and begins to understand ways to commit violence against others. Therefore, the protection of children and teachers is currently an important matter and must be a common concern. Lack of understanding and knowledge of legal protection for children in the school environment has resulted in many violations and even criminal acts of violence against children in the school environment. As a result, children do not feel comfortable at school, skip school, or even drop out. Taking into account the legal issues above, the law faculty community service team carried out this service activity as an effort to increase public awareness and teachers that the importance of child protection starts from a child-friendly school environment and teachers. Regarding these problems, we all must pay attention to the protection of children and teachers, including at SMP Negeri 2 Luwuk. In this community service, we provide counseling and outreach to the concept of child protection, namely the urgency of legal protection for children and teachers in schools. The outputs that will be produced through this service are legal counseling activities for the community, scientific articles in the Community Service Journal, Publication in the Media Period (Print/Online), then Mandatory Reports in the form of Service Implementation Results Reports, Activity Diary Books and Financial Record Books.

Abstract:
Technological development is very possible to use in learning activities for improving the quality of education. Much research has strongly advocated the use and integration of technology in the learning process. One form of utilization of these technologies is the use of E-Modules. E-modules in learning are teaching materials used in assisting learning activities in the form of soft-files that are operated through computers. Interactive e-learning module motivates students to learn more spiritually, actively and independently that can be used by teachers in the learning process. E-Modules allow students to learn not only in the classroom but wherever they are. However, there are many teachers who cannot create or design e-modules. In West Sumatra itself, especially the city of Padang Panjang, e-modules are unknown by teachers. Based on the results of interviews with math subject teachers who are also chairmen of the High School Mathematics MGMP in Padang Panjang City, in general the teachers in the city of Padang Panjang do not know about e-modules and really need training or guidance on e-modules themselves to improve quality their learning in class. Based on this, it was felt necessary to implement an activity program to improve the ability of mathematics teachers in desaining E-Modules in the Padang Panjang city with the partners of Mathematics MGMP. This activity will be facilitated by the IT team who will explain the ins and outs of the E-Module so that technical knowledge about e-modules can be properly controlled by partners. In addition to the IT team this program also involves a team of Mathematics experts who will evaluate the modules designed by teachers during the implementation of the activities so that the quality of modules that can be used by students can be maintained. The mechanism for implementing PKM activities is carried out using action research steps which consist of 4 (four) stages, namely: planning, action, observation and evaluation, and reflection. The implementation of this activity creates e-learning modules that can be designed by subject teachers, especially mathematics.

Education worldwide is a process in which man prepares himself for life in society, that is to say, it is a process of socialization, which requires a very diverse learning, since it is not only knowledge, but also techniques, guidelines and aptitudes, which recognize a person as part of society. The high number of students in Latin America who drop out of school without completing the educational stage is very significant, which originates onerous expenses in society. The strategies that have been used to prevent dropout are ineffective and weak, and instead of decreasing it has been progressively increasing, since these strategies have not been focused on the various causes that lead to dropout. It is perceived that dropout is a social manifestation caused by internal and external cases within the same community environment. Likewise, it is pointed out that school evasion is considered a social phenomenon in which people leave school temporarily or permanently to a teaching stage, which participates in formal learning (De Aguinaga &Barragán,2007, p. 2).

Abstract:
Women are expected to be empowered more quickly and effectively through entrepreneurship-based functional literacy education. The main problem faced is that women drop out of school quite high and do not have skills. This Community Service Activity (PKM) collaborates with the Bungaeja Community Learning Activity Center in an entrepreneurship-based functional literacy education program. The community empowerment method used consists of counseling and training. From community service activities, it can be concluded that HR is not enough to only master theories, but also requires skills in applying their knowledge in society. In training and mentoring, partners can make handicraft products from plastic waste.

Abstract:
This research is motivated by the fact that there are still many children who do not continue their education in high school, some of them drop out of school because of the lack of family economy and children's interest in learning who follow their friends. The formulation of the problem in this research is how is the implementation of Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning Compulsory High School Education, what hinders public awareness of the importance of compulsory high school education. The purpose of this study is to find out how the Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning Compulsory High School Education is, and to find out what factors hinder the compulsory education program for school-age children. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, namely research that is directed to describe the symptoms or events that occur in fact. Informants in this study were children aged 16-18 years as many as 20 people, parents as many as 15 people who were in Gunung Tua Village, Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency. The data collection techniques used in this study were observation and interviews. The results of the study stated that: the implementation of Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning Compulsory High School Education has not gone as expected, some children have followed the compulsory education program and some have not continued their education. Whereas this law was formed in order to improve the intelligence and ability of children in the nation and state. However, this law has not been able to improve the quality of children's education in Gunung Tua Village. What hinders public awareness of the importance of compulsory education is the lack of attention from parents to their children in the field of education, lack of public knowledge about existing education rules, and the lack of family economy in financing their children's education.

The city of Maru is one of the most important cities of Khurasan and the Islamic Mashreq in the era of the intellectual renaissance in the fifth and sixth centuries AH. All that scientific activity has shown large elite of scientists in various sciences, but what concerns us in this research is to shed light on the school of hadith and its most prominant sheikhs who excelled in this honorable science. In this city, some of them lived there until he died, and some of them moved to the rest of the cities of Khurasan or outside it.
The city of Maru is so fortunate in studying the noble hadith and its sciences by its most prominent sheikhs, whose interest was focused on the hadith of the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, and because of the nature of the request for hadith in those eras, the scientific journey and travel were among the conditions for the seeker of knowledge to obtain the high chains of transmission.” Al-Basti said: this is from the etiquette of the student of hadith: to begin by listening from the sheikhs of the people of his Egypt from the first, then the first in terms of knowledge, fame, honor and other things, then after taking the journey to the one who was of this quality in his time, even if a drop is far from his drop. Attending knowledge circles at the sheikhs of this science is important for listening or for permission.

As Muslims are keen on the second source of legislation in our true religion since the era of the Companions and followers to this day, they have taken care of collecting and transcribing hadith, and standing on every word spoken by our honorable Messenger, and setting the necessary rules for this science.

Summary. Delayed completion and student drop-out are some of the most critical problems in higher education, especially regarding STEM programs. A high drop-out rate induces both individual and economic loss, hence a detailed investigation of the main reasons for dropping out is warranted. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the use of machine learning methods for the early detection of students at risk of dropping out. However, there has not been much debate on the use of interpretable machine learning (IML) and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) technologies for dropout prediction. In this paper, we show how IML and XAI techniques can assist educational stakeholders in dropout prediction using data from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. We demonstrate that complex black-box machine learning algorithms, for example CatBoost, are able to effectively detect at-risk student using only pre-enrollment achievement measures, but they lack interpretability. We demonstrate how the predictions can be explained both globally and locally using IML methods including permutation importance (PI), partial dependence plot (PDP), LIME, and SHAP values. Using global interpretations, we have found that the factor that has the greatest impact on academic performance is the high school grade point average, which measures general knowledge by taking into account grades in history, mathematics, Hungarian language and literature, a foreign language and a science subject. However, we also found that both mathematics and the subject of choice are among the most important variables, which suggests that program-specific knowledge is not negligible and complements general knowledge. We discovered that students are more likely to drop out if they do not start their university studies immediately after leaving secondary school. Using a partial dependence plot, we showed that humanities also have incremental predictive power, despite the fact that this analysis is based on data from a technical university. Finally, we also discuss the potential practical applications of our work, such as how the explanation of individual predictions allows for personalized interventions, for example by offering appropriate remedial courses and tutoring sessions. Our approach is unique in that we not only estimate the probability of dropping out, but also interpret the model and provide explanations for each prediction. As a result, this framework can be used in several fields. By predicting which majors they could be most successful in based on high school performance indicators, it might, for instance, assist high school students in selecting the appropriate programs at universities and hence this way it could be used for career assistance. Through the explanations of local predictions, the framework provided can also assist students in identifying the skills they need to develop to succeed in their university studies.

The purpose of our study was to identify reasons for high dropout of students enrolled in the first year of the computer science study program to make it possible to determine students, who are potentially in risk. Several factors that could affect attrition, as it was originally assumed, were studied: high school grades (admission score), compensative course in high school mathematics, intermediate grades for core courses, prior knowledge of programming. However, the results of our study indicate that none of the studied factors is determinant to identify those students, who are going to abandon their studies, with great precision. The majority of the studied students drop out in the 1st semester of the 1st year, and the dropout consists mostly of those, who do not really begin studies. Therefore, one of the main conclusions is such that the planned activities of informing about the contents of the program should be carried out, and the perspective students should be offered a possibility to evaluate their potential to study computer science before choosing a study program.

Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the Factors affecting Students Dropout as Perceived by the Senior High School Students of MSU Marawi City. A Basis for a Proposed Guidance and Counseling Intervention Program and School Community Partnership. This study undertaken to highlight the answers of the following questions. First, what is the profile of the respondents in terms of Age, Gender, Civil Status, Religion, Affiliation, Ethnicity, Scholarship, Number of Siblings, Siblings Rank. The Father’s Educational Attainment, Father Occupations, Mothers Educational Attainment, Mother’s Occupation and Family Monthly Income. Second, what are the causes and factors affecting drop out in school among the graduating students of Senior High School of MSU Marawi City in relation to the following, Family Related factors, Peers Related Factors, School Related Factors Personal Problems Related Factors, Peace and Order and Ridu. Third, what is school community partnership and intervention program may be formulated based on the findings of the study. This study was conducted in MSU Marawi City Senior High School where three hundred forty-one students served as the respondents. A descriptive design was used in this study. SelfConstructed questionnaire was the main instrument used to gather data for this study. After administering, recording, tabulating and interpreting the data gathered the following finding were drawn: Many (41.64%) of the respondents were between 18 to 20 years of age, (56.89%) of the respondents were female, Majority (64.81%) of them belong to Islam religion. Majority (57.77%) were Meranao. Therefore, Senior High School of MSU Marawi City has an age of brackets of 18 to 20 years old, a female, with a religious affiliation of Islam, a Meranao, and ESC Grantees status, with 6 or more siblings, probably 3rd or 5th in rank, where father’s and mother’s Educational Attainment is college graduate both working in government office with a monthly income of above P 15, 000.00 The researcher observed that the factors related to students dropout was Ridu (3.11%) and peace and order ( 2.77%) family (2.76%) personal( 2.73%) peer ( 2.73%) and School (2.72) were sometime related to students’ dropout in school. As such, there is no one causes and factor that could contribute to dropouts of the students. Studies yielded that no single factor can completely account for student’s performance and decision to continue in school until they finish their senior high school. Just as a student they report a variety of reasons for not pursuing their academic. The decision to drop out is not simply a result of what happens in school. Clearly student’s behavior and performance in school influences their decision to stay or leave, but students’ activities and behaviors outside of school particularly engaging in deviant behavior also influences their determination to pursue their academic. Thus, this study is primarily recommended to the school heads, curriculum makers, guidance counselor, parents, community, teachers, students and to the future researchers to really assess, properly monitor the students’ performance will help them focus their studies and pursue to graduate. The benefits of this study greatly help in motivating the students to stay in school and graduate. Planning and decision making should consider the background knowledge, and culture of the students prior to his needs.

Abstract:
The spread of COVID-19 in the year 2020 put various nations at risk, especially in social, economic, and educational aspects. School closure was employed as one of the response measures against the spread of this virus. However, the measure imposed high social and educational risks with consequences of a massive drop academically. This study investigated the management of the COVID-19 pandemic risks in primary schools in the Lindi region in Tanzania intending to suggest the essence of having a risk management plan for indeterminate outbreaks and other uncertainties to avoid the recurrence of the risks. The study adopted a qualitative case study design which allowed an in-depth data collection through one-on-one interviews and observation methods. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the data for this inquiry. Findings revealed that the targeted schools were able to manage the COVID-19 pandemic risks even though the management was done locally due to the lack of risk management plans in the schools. Furthermore, it was discovered that there was no budget set to deal with the emerging risks. Headteachers from the investigated schools went as far as using part of their salaries to tackle the emerging risks as a result of school closure. Additionally, findings also revealed that during school closure teachers were unprepared on how to conduct the teaching and learning processes amongst the pupils through distance mode. Despite several endeavors to try to ensure pupils continue to learn in their homes, the strategies were not successful due to inadequate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) knowledge and skills among the teachers, parents, and pupils as well as insufficient supportive distance learning infrastructures such as ICT equipment and the internet. Consequently, proper implementation of distance teaching and learning during school closure was impaired due to the lack of risk management plans in schools. It is recommended that the risk management plan be developed to ensure that teaching and learning processes are never hampered by emergencies.

Abstract:
A student's academic performance is directly related to their level of education, which plays a significant role in the personal, social, and economic development of the nation. The number of senior high school graduates in the country who take education as a program in higher education serves a silver lining to the quality of education in the country. Future teachers who are determined to join the teaching force, especially mathematics education. The abstract nature of mathematics education makes it a challenging program to take because it requires students to have a strong understanding of difficult concepts, the ability to reason logically, and the ability to solve problems. The progressive structure of the curriculum requires continuous comprehension because it builds on foundational knowledge of the subject matter. The paper is aimed at addressing the dropout rate of mathematics education major students as they progress to more complex content subjects in their curriculum. Using a descriptive correlational design, this paper revealed that the mathematics major students perform well in academics. They also show a high level of perseverance and possess a learning mindset. They are also able to identify learning strategies and socialize with their peers despite the complexity of the concepts that they study in their curriculum. Results also reveal that learning management is among the factors of drop-out from the program. An action plan will be developed from these results.

Abstract:
The article concerns the difficulties of learning geography in junior high school students and adolescents as they are reflected in foreign publications. It also discusses the effective teaching methods to be used by educators. Research results obtained by scientists from the United States, Ireland, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, China, Japan and other countries are analyzed in comparison with data of Russian researches. The article substantiates that people today need the knowledge of geography and therefore this subject must be present in the primary school curriculum as a part of an integral course, and in primary school as a separate academic discipline. It is possible to develop spatial and systematic thinking in students and to shape their worldviews by means of a school course in geography. However, the current state of this school subject does not meet the expectations of educators and scientists. The analyzed studies demonstrate the drop of interest to learning geography, as it is thought to be difficult. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of possible difficulties that students with mild disabilities may confront with in the course of their study of geography. We describe how to cope with potential problems and describe the teaching methods which are the most efficient and effective in improving the quality of geographical education. All studies are of great importance for the practice of education, because geographically literate person is able to take care of our planet, appreciate it, live harmoniously in a closely interdependent world

Abstract:
Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), its morbidity and mortality rates are high. The aim of this review was to map evidence on CC management in SSA. The scoping review was conducted in accordance with Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework. The review included studies on different aspects of CC management. The review was also done following the steps and guidelines outlined in the PRISMA-Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. The following databases were searched: PubMed, EBSCOhost, Scopus and Cochrane Database of Systematic Review. A total of 1121 studies were retrieved and 49 which were eligible for data extraction were included in the review. The studies were classifiable in 5 groups: 14 (28.57%) were on barriers to CC screening, 10 (20.41%) on factors associated with late-stage presentation at diagnosis, 11 (22.45%) on status of radiotherapy, 4 (8.20%) on status of chemotherapy and 10 (20.41%) on factors associated with high HPV coverage. High HPV vaccine coverage can be achieved using the class school-based strategy with opt-out consent form process. Barriers to CC screening uptake included lack of knowledge and awareness and unavailability of screening services. The reasons for late-stage presentation at diagnosis were unavailability of screening services, delaying whilst using complementary and alternative medicines and poor referral systems. The challenges in chemotherapy included unavailability and affordability, low survival rates, treatment interruption due to stock-outs as well as late presentation. Major challenges on radiotherapy were unavailability of radiotherapy, treatment interruption due to financial constraints, and machine breakdown and low quality of life. A gap in understanding the status of CC management in SSA has been revealed by the study implying that, without full knowledge of the extent of CC management, the challenges and opportunities, it will be difficult to reduce infection, improve treatment and palliative care. Research projects assessing knowledge, attitude and practice of those in immediate care of girls at vaccination age, situational analysis with health professionals and views of patients themselves is important to guide CC management practice.

Abstract:
Background/Aims Adolescent girls in Tanzania may drop out of school if they experience an unwanted pregnancy. Evidence shows that sex education can improve adolescents’ understanding of issues related to intercourse, pregnancy and contraception, but this education is lacking in Tanzania. In order to improve sex education in Tanziania, this study investigated early adolescents’ knowledge of anatomy, changes during puberty, pregnancy, contraception and safety. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 10−14-year-old students in a primary school in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. A questionnaire was used to gather data on participants’ knowledge of fundamental anatomy and physiology, sexual characteristics and contraception. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with P<0.05 used to determine significance. Results A total of 111 students (44 girls, 67 boys, from the fifth and sixth grades) participated. Significantly more boys than girls had begun talking to classmates about steady girl/boyfriends across both grades (P=0.003). The participants’ understanding of basic anatomy (including the functions of the heart, lungs and digestive system) was mostly high, although they scored low in some areas (pain, dentistry and facial muscles). When asked about pregnancy, contraception and safety, significantly more boys than girls could correctly identify appropriate contraception for teenagers (P=0.01). When analysed by grade, the boys’ grade had a significant impact on whether they correctly answered the questions on pregnancy (P=0.001) and contraception (P=0.001), but there were no differences in answers between girls of different grades. Conclusions Girls’ knowledge of pregnancy, contraception and safety was significantly lower than the boys, and despite beginning sex education in sixth grade, no significant differences in were observed between the fifth and sixth grade answers by the girls. The comprehensive sexual education programme for adolescent girls in Tanzania needs urgent improvement.

Abstract:
The evidence base on child marriage has grown substantially over the past decade, especially regarding its levels, trends, causes and consequences. The importance of such evidence is that it has been particularly useful in making an urgent case for investing in child marriage prevention initiatives and for doing so with cross-sectoral efforts. However, the rates of child marriage in the West and Central African region remain unacceptably high. An extremely effective but not yet fully explored strategy is to use girls’ education as a mechanism towards ending child marriages. By analysing the correlation between early marriage and school drop-out rates and looking at the advantages of this correlation to the regions Sustainable Development Goals, this article advocates for ending child marriages in a more targeted way. The paper will analyse some country-specific strategies to highlight how investing in girls’ education at more than primary schooling level will lead to the achievement of many of the development goals of the region. This paper aims to fill a knowledge gap by arguing that there currently exists an opportunity to address child marriages and development goals through policies and strategies that are specifically aimed at keeping girls in school for longer.

Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of watching the English-language series of Peaky Blinders and Friends towards the improvement language ability in terms of word pronunciation, long-sentence listening, and grammatical analysis. This point outs the impact of continued exposure to English media to improve the student’s capability of learning English. The study has been arranged for 3 months by involving high school students from SMA 999 in Jakarta with a total sample of 25 students. The data were then gathered through conventional paper-based testing for Listening and grammar proficiency which encapsulated into Reading and Writing section. Speaking assessment was conducted through an interview. The tests were conducted in three main stages, the pre- test, mid-tests and post-test. The mid-tests were held after the first 2 week of the month. The result of the study showed that there were notable improvements in the English skills among 25 students, particularly in the Listening aspects as shown by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD analysis. However, the data from other aspects such as Reading, Writing and Speaking despite showed an upward trend, did not produce improvement as significant as Listening aspects. This phenomenon might be caused by the lack of students’ knowledge foundation regarding several language aspects therefore most students require longer time to completely improve their ability. From this point, this study can suggest that using movie series could be a great tool for English education to improve the students’ awareness of English and therefore would naturally improve their English.

Abstract:
This study, forming part of an EU-funded project led by The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), seeks to investigate the challenges and barriers students in Malta face in their learning journeys. Previous research exercises collected data from students at State Secondary Schools and at MCAST. Having gained knowledge of the challenges and barriers students face, this knowledge having been acquired directly from the students themselves, it was now felt that it was important to also collect the views, perceptions and thoughts about student challenges and barriers in learning from the teachers and lecturers working within those same contexts and environments. Data were collected through online questionnaires, one designed for State School teachers and another one designed for MCAST lecturers. Results indicate that through effective strategizing, VET institutions, such as MCAST, that seem to bear the brunt of high student dropout rates, can render the term student dropout a very fluid term by further penetrating the workforce and recapturing former students at their chosen place of work. This proposed strategy gains more weighting when seeing the similar results obtained in this study and in our previous research that indicated that work and financial reasons seemed to be the main factors leading students to drop out of their studies at MCAST. This study concludes with some thoughts on the term NEETS (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) and how this category of former students still escapes the strategy outlined in this study and hence requires more research and intervention.

Abstract:
Introduction Vaccination with the 2-dose HPV vaccine series among adolescent girls in Uganda remains low after almost 5 years since the vaccine was included into the routine national immunization program and barriers are not well understood. Objective We explored barriers that prevent eligible girls from initiating or completing the recommended 2-dose HPV vaccine series in Oyam District, Northern Uganda. Methods A qualitative study was conducted in Oyam District, Northern Uganda. Forty interviews were conducted with adolescent girls, their caregivers, Village Health Team Members, health workers and school administrators involved in HPV vaccination. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. NVivo version 11 was used for data management and content thematic approach for analysis guided by the Social Ecological Model. Results At individual level, low levels of knowledge about the vaccine, girls’ frequent mobility between vaccine doses, school absenteeism and drop out, fear of injection pain and discouragement from caregivers or peers were key barriers. At the health facilities level, reported barriers included: few healthcare workers, inadequate knowledge about HPV vaccine, limited social mobilization and community engagement to promote the vaccine, limited availability of the HPV vaccine, unreliable transportation, lack of reminder strategies after the first dose of the vaccine, lack of vaccination strategy for out-of-school girls and un-friendly behaviour of some healthcare workers. Concerns about safety and efficacy of the vaccine, negative religious and cultural beliefs against vaccination, rumors and misconceptions about the vaccine, mistrust in government intentions to introduce the new vaccine targeting girls, busy schedules and the gendered nature of care work were key community level barriers. Conclusion Our study revealed an interplay of barriers at individual, health facility and community levels, which prevent initiation and completion of HPV vaccination among adolescent girls. Strengthening HIV vaccination programs and ensuring high uptake requires providing appropriate information to the girls plus the community, school and health facility stakeholders; addressing cold chain challenges as well as adequate training of vaccinators to enable them respond to rumors about HPV vaccination.

Abstract:
This paper reviews current knowledge about the impact of vocational education and training on the labor market outcomes for young people in advanced market economies, and asks whether the results can be extrapolated to countries in the Western Balkans and the EU neighborhood. It draws four main policy conclusions. First, in transition countries, specialized vocational education should not be replaced by streaming or tracking within comprehensive school systems or integrated into general education programmes. Abandoning effective vocational schooling may worsen the labor market outcomes for the less able and disadvantaged young people. Inadequate vocational school systems should be strengthened, while ensuring effective pathways to higher levels of education. Second, while apprenticeship systems enable lower ability students and minorities to access the labor market, they may lock women into traditional female occupations. Well-organized and resourced school-based vocational education may be preferred by women who feel they could benefit from them, and may furthermore reduce school drop-out rates. Third, occupational mobility can be improved by effective school-based vocational education. If returns to such education are sufficiently high, they can incentives mobility. While for developed economies there is little difference in rates of return between general and vocational education, in transition economies, returns to vocational education are higher than returns to general education. Fourth, while occupational mobility is needed for countries undergoing structural change, it should be noted that too much mobility can also be harmful to the skill retention, especially for women. Special attention should therefore be given to providing complementary opportunities for retraining and for lifelong learning to all workers, but especially to women, to encourage and support the desired degree of mobility in the labor market.
