Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, there has been increasing interest in analytic philosophy that engages with non-Western philosophical traditions, including South Asian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. However, thus far, there has been (to my knowledge) no engagement with Sikhism, despite its status as a major world religion with a rich philosophical tradition. This paper is an attempt to get a start at analytic philosophical engagement with Sikh philosophy. My focus is on Sikh ethics, and in particular on the theory of vice and virtue that can be gleaned from Sikh scripture. According to this theory, the five major vices have a unified source in the vice of haumai. Haumai is a kind of false conception of oneself as singularly important, and correspondingly, a false conception of the world as revolving around oneself, as a world of objects there for one’s use. Vice, then, comes down to the failure to recognize the importance of others. The corresponding picture of virtue is that virtue consists in a recognition of the importance of others, through the recognition of an ultimate reality on which all are One. After reconstructing the Sikh theory of vice and virtue, I conclude with some comparative remarks on Sikh and Western ethics.

The gods worshipped by the three kings of The Ilango Adigal period and the deities worshipped by various tribes and the rituals performed by them without any discrimination. Kannagi worship is an expression of the attempt to build or advance a common deity in the Tamil community, which is based on different theories and principles of Jainism, Buddhist and Vaideekam religions. The purpose of this article is to bring out the theory of the divine theory that the Ilango Adigal are trying to build from the beginning to the end of the Silappadikaram. The purpose of this article is to express the theory of the sculpture spearheaded by the Ilango Adigal by attempting to build kannagi as the deity of the entire Tamil Nadu, which is the alternative to Jainism, Buddhist and Vaideekam religions, but also created kannagi as an epic in tamil land (Worshipping Kannagi in Tamil Nadu as Mari worship in Tamil Nadu, Bhagwati worship in Kerala and Kannagai).

Abstract:
Before the birth of Buddhism, Indian society was familiar with various beliefs which were characterized by the ascetic tradition, the rites of the Brahmins, the religion of the Upanisads, and the strong ascetic traditions of the Jainas. Buddhist philosophy was born from the teachings of Buddha Gautama, obtained from the results of his enlightenment. The Buddha guided his followers to arrive at the Arahant. Buddhism is divided into two major schools, Hinayāna and Mahāyāna. Ethics or morality in Buddhism can be found in three sentences, such as avoiding bad deeds, adding to good deeds, and cleansing the heart, all of which are summarized in the Pancasila Buddha and Pancadhamma. The main teachings of the Buddha are recorded in the Tripitaka. Between philosophy, religion and ethics in Buddhism has a very close relationship in the goal of achieving liberation, because Buddhism does not separate knowledge from behavior, theory and practice.

Abstract:
Indian literary traditions, both religious and non-religious, have dealt with literature in a fluid way, repeating and reusing narrative motifs, stories and characters over and over again. In recognition of this, the current paper will focus on one particular textual tradition within Jainism of works titled Dharmaparīkṣā and will trace its circulation. This didactic narrative, designed to convince a Jain audience of the correctness of Jainism over other traditions, was first composed in the tenth century in Apabhraṃśa and is best known in its eleventh-century Sanskrit version by the Digambara author Amitagati. Tracing it from a tenth-century context into modernity, across both classical and vernacular languages, will demonstrate the popularity of this narrative genre within Jain circles. The paper will focus on the materiality of manuscripts, looking at language and form, place of preservation, affiliation of the authors and/or scribe, and patronage. Next to highlighting a previously underestimated category of texts, such a historical overview of a particular literary circulation will prove illuminating on broader levels: it will show networks of transmission within the Jain community, illustrate different types of mediation of one literary tradition, and overall, enrich our knowledge of Jain literary culture.

Abstract:
Modern man lives in a soul-less civilization of materialism and consumerism. This materialistic turn has also gradually resulted in man losing faith in ‘religion as the harbinger of individual and social harmony’. Now, a question arises to me and that relates to whether man lives for bread alone or if there is something more to him. My enquiry into this question helped me to understand that we lack not the proper philosophy of life, but the lack of practice of the norms laid down by philosophy. Here, it is important to realize the Jaina emphasis on upayoga (utility) than upabhoga (consumption). We are also reminded of the practices suggested by Jainism, including ahimsa (or non-injury to other lives), which reawakens the people to the innate dignity of all life. The above-mentioned principle is the basis of equality and a pre-requisite of global harmony. The method that enables us to tread from mere search to realization is commonly called ‘YOGA’. The Jainas understood ‘yoga’ in terms of ‘cāritra’ or right conduct which is one of the important teachings of Jainism, namely ‘triratnas’ (three jewels involving right vision, right knowledge and right conduct).

Jainism proposes a unique theory of reality in which the extreme positions of absolute identity and permanence on the one hand and absolute difference and change on the other are avoided in favour of integrative ontology. Here, identity and difference as well as permanence and change are coordinated. The vertical and horizontal descriptions of the nature of reality are reflected in the basic definitions of substance and existence. This paper examines how this ontology is outlined in the works of Kundakunda and Umāsvāti.

Abstract:
This publication presents the first translation into European language of the only Sanskrit commentary Tātparya-vrŠ tti of the almost unknown Digambara exegete Padmaprabha Maladhārideva (12th century) on the first chapter-adhikāra of the treatise Niyama-sāra (“Essence of Restraint”) by Kundakunda (3rd–4th centuries), who is one of the most authoritative Jain authors. The first chapter of the commentary introduces the problems of the text and gives a general idea of the “Three Jewels” of Jainism: right vision, right knowledge and right behavior, the latter of which is the main theme of the text. The translation is preceded by an Introduction to the ethical doctrine of Jainism, which is considered by the author of the article as one of the variants of the virtue ethics. Jain ontology, being a descriptive part of the Jain Doctrine, is complemented by a prescriptive one, which includes an extensive system of vows (both “great” and “small”, basic and additional) and restrictions for all members of the community, which is built on the basis of the main prohibition of violence against all kinds of living beings. The observance of vows in Jain ethics is logically integrated into the Path of Liberation of the soul-ātman from the wheel of rebirth and is marked by various steps of the ladder of spiritual self-improvement. In the first chapter of the commentary Padmaprabha Maladhārideva proficiently shows the connection between ontology and ethics, skillfully weaving verses of his own composition into his exegesis and demonstrating deep knowledge not only of the Jain philosophical tradition, but also fluency in various verse meters according to the hermeneutical tasks facing him.

Abstract:
The Tamil word is basic ally from the grammar of the Tamil word. The grammar system that divides world life into 'Thinai' is a very important system in Tamil. Language changes are taking place in a scientifically functioning society. The cultivation and productivity of the foundation of society have an impact on the superstructure of the society, the art, literature and culture. The religious god thought is in the life classification of the Tamil grammar which is the basis for the creation of words. The tholkappiyam period of the resurrection of the collective life is a symbol of the non-religious protodravidian ism and directly links the doctrine of God to the people. The authors of the well developed landslide society, who wrote to tholkappiyam, have also incorporated the theory of God, based on the various religious and social contexts. The Veera Choliam with buddhist background and Neminatha with Jainism link the god sandals in the higher dina. The nannul also inscribes the sanskrit influence of the deity and the naraka of the sanskrit influence, and the sanskrit influential theory of the proto Dravidian grammar of the grammar, the devar and the narakar a number of religious theories.

Abstract:
A relevant part of Jainism is its logic. Jaina logic gives tools to communicate and argue. However, it is problematic from the western perspective: it seems to be a paraconsistent system, that is, a system in which a fact and the denial of that very fact can be true at once. Those difficulties have been overtaken from interpretations that ignore classical standard logic and assess Jaina logic from a point of view more linked to reasoning and the real use of natural language. One of those interpretations have resorted to the theory of mental models, and that interpretation is the one the present paper develops. This is because the theory of mental models has been updated and, hence, any relation provided between Jaina logic and this last theory should be updated as well.

Hooper, Giles Ross. "A study of the “Twelve Reflections” (dvādaśa bhāvanāḥ) depicted by the eleventh-century Jain Digambara scholar Ācārya Śubhacandra in his “Ocean of Knowledge” (Jñānārṇava) and an analysis of his contribution to the development of Jain meditation practice." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/23724.

Full text
Abstract:
The Jñānārṇava is a text on yoga and meditation composed in Sanskrit by the Digambara mendicant scholar, Śubhacandra (c. 11th century C.E.). In Chapter 2 of his text, he discusses twelve subjects for reflection: transience, helplessness, the cycle of rebirth, solitariness, difference between the body and the self, impurity of the body, influx of karma, preventing influx of karma, wearing away karma, the doctrine, the cosmos, and enlightenment. This thesis has two primary aims. The first is to investigate Śubhacandra’s formulation and presentation of the twelve reflections. The second is to consider the extent to which his articulation of them represents an original contribution to their application as part of Jain meditation practice and his role in their development as a subject for consideration within Jainism. The first chapter discusses the edition of the Jñānārṇava used as a basis for the English translation of Chapter 2 of this text, previous scholarship on the topic, what is known about Śubhacandra and presents an overview of his text. The second chapter examines the meaning of the word bhāvanā in the context of the twelve reflections, their emergence within Jainism, their role and modifications in their form and usage. Chapter three includes a description of the twelve reflections and discusses their benefit or purpose according to Śubhacandra. This thesis contends that they are premeditative in a general and specific sense. The fourth chapter compares Śubhacandra’s exposition with those in the Sarvārthasiddhi, Yaśastilaka Campū and Yogaśāstra. Chapter five presents the conclusions of this research. They include the likelihood that Śubhacandra’s approach to the twelve reflections is the original formulation of their conceptualisation as a preparation for practising Jain meditation; and that his presentation displays certain innovative features but that without further research it is difficult to conclude that it is typical of the Digambara tradition.

Lamotte, Virginie. "Ibn Taymiyya's theory of knowledge." Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=22601.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis highlights a new interpretation of the writings of Ibn Taymiyya. Previous scholarship has stressed the legalistic, social or religious aspect, often at the expense of the philosophical content of Ibn Taymiyya's works. The explanatory insight of a study on the theory of knowledge, hitherto neglected, is evidenced by its capability to demonstrate the convergence of elementary, religious, intuitive and rational principles. The theory illustrates the concerns of a synthetic mind whose attempt was to broaden and not restrict the domain of knowledge vis-a-vis the Divine. Knowledge is not man's privilege and is available to all of creation. All created entities have the capacity to know their Creator. This thesis attempts to shed light on the mechanisms of the acquisition of knowledge about the Divine in their modes of availability to the creatures and to man. Tensions of the human predicament thus participate in the logical framework of the discussion. The attempt is to define the domain of knowledge, its components, and its parameters in the quest for a perfect acquisition of knowledge.

Abstract:
The decision problem in set theory has been intensively investigated in the last decades, and decision procedures or proofs of undecidability have been provided for several quantified and unquantified fragments of set theory. In this thesis we study the decision problem for three novel quantified fragments of set theory, which allow the explicit manipulation of ordered pairs. We present a decision procedure for each language of this family, and prove that all of these procedures are optimal (in the sense that they run in nondeterministic polynomial-time) when restricted to formulae with quantifier nesting bounded by a constant. The expressive power of languages of this family is then measured in terms of set-theoretical constructs they allow to express. In addition, these languages can be profitably employed in knowledge representation, since they allow to express a large amount description logic constructs.

Abstract:

Knowledge is regarded as key resource in today’s business environment. Many researchers argue that it is the key resource to create a competitive advantage. Still, it differs itself from ordinary resources. Knowledge cannot be quantified or specified numerically to recognize the quantity of knowledge a company possesses. Furthermore, companies may lack the ability to achieve an absolute control over the supply of knowledge that will occur when trying to extract it from employees. Knowledge Management is the field which presents an approach to manage the valuable resource of accumulated knowledge. By implementing processes and actions in a company, it will obtain a control over the knowledge in the organization. This dissertation also presents diverse definitions of Knowledge Management. By investigating the components of these definitions, we see that various academic researchers recognize different notions upon Knowledge Management as theory. When reviewing theory, one could question the validity of the word management in Knowledge Management. The theory declares management as an enhancement of practices in organizational context.

The purpose of our dissertation was to investigate if theoretical Knowledge Management is a coexisted factor in companies. By looking at the elements extracted from theory, this notion became apparent. When implementing Knowledge Management, an individual company creates opportunities for people to learn and share their knowledge.

Abstract:
Scholars argue that knowledge is a fundamental source for retaining competitive advantage, as value creation depends fundamentally on the competence of a firm to create new knowledge (Nonaka and Toyama, 2002). Knowledge creation is based on conversion of two types of knowledge: tacit knowledge, which is constituent to the comprehensiveness of an individual’s consciousness, and explicit knowledge, which can be readily communicated. Based on the framework by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), one of the most significant and cited models, the motivation of this research is to expand knowledge creation model from intra- to inter-organizational relationships theoretically and explore supply chain knowledge creation process in practice to examine the sequences of this extension. Studying three firms in the fashion industry, this thesis contributes to research on knowledge creation by taking a socio-technological perspective through a qualitative study of supply chain management. The research findings provide support for the proposed theoretical model in which social relationships and technology interact in the knowledge creation process to diminish supply chain complexities. While many supply chain relationships I observed appear to be influential in creating knowledge, one similarity among the cases here is that the effectiveness of the knowledge creation process has been limited due to the lack of harmony in employing knowledge resources. Knowledge creation process may be superficial due to the fact that they require a large revolution in work routines regarding the use of technology. Even where there is some degree of socialization, the process is partial because of incongruities between individuals understanding and corporate supply chain strategies.

Abstract:
Knowledge Management (KM) is not a new impossible philosophy about business, but more the sum of all the small actions that are contributing to the success of the whole picture. In the context of the new economy, KM becomes inevitable. The author defines it as "the process of nurturing for surviving in organizations. " The original contribution of this work is to demonstrate that KM is not a new topic that we must fit into our organizations. We rather have to pay attention to the "Knowledge Convergence" (KC), that already most of the time happens in our organizations and not to create a separate isolating bubble. Identify and take in account the KC is a way to start doing KM. This is about identifying in our established structures in organizations, its seeds. This is about the consideration of the organic development that already happened in companies and their linkage under the virtual umbrella of the already existing KM efforts. The goal is double. In one hand this is about enrooting those practices in the company culture sustaining the employees' motivation. On the other hand, it allows reducing the functional barriers between the different departments, in order to achieve common goals and perform more and more complex tasks. KM methods and practices used are tactical. If those converge (KC) under the coordination of a cross-functional team, then a new kind of knowledge could emerge (Knowledge Emergence). This then leads to the "Creative Advantage"

Abstract:
Although research and practice agree that visions are essential for organizations, the process of vision development remains elusive in academic literature. Presenting the "theory wave", this paper proposes a knowledge-based theory for developing sustainable visions to guide the creation of measures and actions in the future. Central to the theory wave, we suggest three features that characterize the development of sustainable visions; (1) learning from an envisioned future, (2) need orientation and (3) a wavelike process combining top-down and bottom-up approaches. Furthermore, by enhancing the creation of different kinds of knowledge, the theory-wave entails aspects of research on knowledge creation and thereby, it provides a new perspective on the field of vision development.

Lenhardt, Amanda. Local Knowledge and Participation in the Covid-19 Response. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/cc.2021.005.

Full text
Abstract:
This report explores approaches to participation in humanitarian response and evidence on the contributions of community engagement in effective response and recovery efforts. It begins with a brief overview of decolonial perspectives on the Covid-19 pandemic to situate participation in the wider context and history of humanitarian and development theory and practice. This is followed by a brief summary of evidence on the role of participation in humanitarian activities andsituates the now ubiquitous concept of ‘Building Back Better’ (BBB) inthe discussion of participatory crisis response and recovery. The remaining sections of the report introduce participatory approaches that have been applied through the Covid-19 pandemic: decentralised decision-making, technological adaptations to engage local communities, and Southern-led research and participatory research methods.

Vigneri, Marcella. The Science in the Middle: Middle Level Theory in International Development Evaluation. Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51744/cmwp3.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses how Middle Level Theory is becoming an important tool in the evaluation of international development programmes by connecting abstract theory to project level theory. The paper discusses three defining features of how mid-level theorising generates transferable knowledge across disciplines and settings; it consolidates empirical regularities in human behaviour, it explains the diversity of outcomes observed across contexts, and it is explicit about causal principles observed in different settings. These attributes are illustrated using examples from interventions in international development that show the potential of the method in improving the design of international development programmes.
