Abstract:
This thesis explores the communication of health knowledge among new parents in Sweden. Based on three separate studies, the thesis employs a selection of theoretical concepts and methodological approaches, mainly originating from mediated discourse analysis and linguistic anthropology. Study 1 takes a broad view on the object and asks how knowledge circulates and emerges in a particular arena for parental knowledge. Drawing on nine months of online fieldwork on a discussion forum thread for expectant parents, the study shows that communication of knowledge is engendered by entextualizations a

Object Oriented Data Bases (OODBs) have been proposed both for coping with the impedance mismatch problem and for increasing the semantic details kept in the Data Base by collecting not only the structural features of the application but the behavioural ones as well. This is achieved by including procedures (called methods) within schema definition. However, methods have sometimes been overused in the sense that the code encapsulated refers not only to how the operation is implemented but also to other kinds of knowledge that is implicit in the code. The question of whether or not school makes a difference in preparing students for democratic citizenship has been debated for a long time in political science and curriculum studies. These discussions are mostly based on the results of international surveys measuring students’ political attitudes, values and participation. However, we first need to define what kind of prepared citizens are needed. This article takes on the definition issue and presents new perspectives by exploring how teachers in Social Science (Samhällskunskap) and their students in Sweden reason about engagement when they

In this thesis, I draw inspiration from Bourdieu’s theory of practice to inform a conceptualisation of birthing women as skilful and knowledgeable agents. The study contributes to geographical knowledge about spaces of birth and about how these represent key sites of learning. Empirical data were collected in 2011/12 through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 26 women living in North-West England (involving 68 childbirth experiences). Two key themes emerged from the women’s narratives: the prevalence of trouble (and how this is accepted as ‘just the way things are’) and routine (and non-

Despite the high percentage of young students in classrooms using technology, the impact of this technology on the early literacy skills of young children remains largely unknown. Guided by Vygotsky’s social learning theory, this study reports a 24-week investigation on whether regular use of Istation®, an integrated learning system used by approximately 3,000,000 students in the United States, h

The first case study examines the existing European and international regulatory frameworks for genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This case study explores the role of (bio

This dissertation examines how the desire to convey a particular image, one of being knowledgeable about a product category, motivates and affects WOM behavior.
