Full textIn contrast to conventional metallic strain gauges, carbon nanotube (CNT) composites have an additional pressure sensitivity. Therefore, deformation elements such as bending beam is not needed by using pressure sensors, which are based on CNT nanocomposite. The possible areas of application for these pressure direct measured sensors were showed in three industrial application such as robot gripper. The focus of this work is the development and characterization of a new sensor manufactured from CNT nanocomposite. By using multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) epoxy and interdigital electrodes the sensor, which has a dimension of few square centimetre, should measure a pressure in mega Pascal range and hence a force in kilo newton range. By the selection of suitable materials and the modelling using finite element method, the sensor design as well as the measurement range were carried out. The MWCNT epoxy dispersion is manufactured by using a mechanical mixing process. Subsequent, the dispersion is used to fabricate pressure sensitive layers by stencil printing methods. Thereby, the fabrication parameters and especially the filler content of the MWCNTs were varied for the mechanical, thermal and electrical investigation. The characterization of the mechanical characteristic values were carried out by using tensile test and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results show a significant increasing of the tensile strength and glass transition temperature in comparison to neat epoxy. Additionally, the influence of the filler content to the pressure and thermal sensitivity were investigated. A highly pressure sensitivity but also a highly thermal sensitivity are obtained for samples with lower filler contents (1 wt% and 1.25 wt%). Therefore, a suitable material combination has to be chosen. The fabricated sensors show reliable response signals by repeated excitations up to 20 MPa (meets to 2 KN). Moreover, the temperature influence ranged from -20 °C to 50 °C was compensated with a Wheatstone bridge. This work demonstrate a direct pressure sensitive sensor with reliable response signals by a thermal deviation of 0.214 MPa/10K.

Full textCarbon nanotubes (CNT) polymer composites in the field of sensory applications have considerable potential. However, their electrical properties and their changes under mechanical stress play a decisive role. The deagglomeration process of the CNTs also has a great influence on the aspect ratio of the CNT agglomerates as well as the CNTs themselves and thus the electrical conductivity and reproducibility of the composite in both the mechanically unloaded and loaded state. This is shown by means of (partially) analytical models. The dispersion quality is influenced by many factors. The process parameters during ultrasound dispersion are currently being determined by a trial-and-error method. Within the scope of the work, a dispersing equation for cylindrical particles, which are approximate to CNTs, was first developed, applied and verified for the dispersion of CNTs in solvents. The validity of the equation for CNTs was shown by the variation of the ultrasonic parameters time as well as energy and their influence on the degree of dispersion. The absorbance measured by means of UV-VIS spectroscopy serves as an indirect measure of the degree of dispersion. After pre-testing for suitable material selection, all relevant influencing parameters were calculated or determined experimentally. Experimental verification was carried out on CNT-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone dispersions, which were dispersed in a controlled manner by means of an ultrasonic sonotrode. As a result, it is illustrated that the determination of the optimal ultrasonic parameters is possible and can replace the conventional practice of the experimental determination of the dispersing parameters for CNTs. Accordingly, the basis for the production of electrically reproducible CNT polymer composite-based sensors has been established. In addition, the application potential of this sensor concept ranging from individual sensors for selective pressure measurement over pressure distribution measurement as a sensor matrix to the application as a shoe insole for pressure monitoring was shown

Full textIn the light of future sensors, that are based upon the piezoresistive effect of singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), this work presents comprehensive results of studies on the mechanical behavior of interfaces between SWCNTs and noble metals using the examples of Pd and Au. With this contribution, the focus is on a synergy between computational and experimental approaches involving molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, nanoscale testing, and analytics (1) to predict to a good degree of accuracy maximum forces of pulled SWCNTs embedded in a noble metal matrix and (2) to provide valuable input to understand the underlying mechanisms of failure. A MD model of a SWCNT embedded in a single crystalline matrix with pull-out test boundary conditions was developed. With this model, force-displacement relations and energy evolutions for a quasi-static displacement controlled test can be computed. The model provides critical forces for failure of the system. Furthermore, the influence of SWCNT type, embedding length, temperature, intrinsic defects and surface functional groups (SFGs) on the interface behavior can be studied using this model. For comparison, critical forces were experimentally determined by conducting pull-out tests in situ, inside a scanning electron microscope. A very good agreement of computational and experimental values was discovered. The dominant failure mode in the experiment was a SWCNT rupture, although several pull-out failures were also observed. From MD simulations, it was found that SFGs act as small anchors in the metal matrix and significantly enhance the maximum forces. This interface reinforcement can lead to tensile stresses sufficiently high to initiate SWCNT rupture. In contrast, pull-out test simulations of ideal SWCNTs show only small pull-out forces, which are mostly independent on SWCNT embedding length. This behavior is interpreted with an incommensurate configuration of crystal structures at the interface between SWCNTs and embedding noble metals. To qualify the existence of carboxylic SFGs on the used SWCNT material, an analytical investigation by means of fluorescence labeling of surface species was performed. In agreement with literature reports on the secured verification of SFGs due to necessary technological treatments, these experiments strongly indicate the presence of carboxylic SFGs on the used SWCNT material. Thus, the dominant SWCNT rupture failure is explained with an interface reinforcement by SFGs.
