Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the turning point in the perception of late activity of A.I. Herzen by Russian society. The authors note that the sixties of the XIX century are naturally considered the time of decisive changes in the life of Russian society, and in Russian culture their sign was the progressive separation of literary forces according to the ideological principle. The article considers the acute controversy that happened in the cultural life of the 1860s between the London publicist, publications of M. N. Katkov (“Modern Chronicle”, “Russian Herald”) and the newspaper of P. S. Usov “Severnaya pchela." An ideological-free analysis of key articles written during the controversy (“Letter to Katkov and Leontiev”, “Young and Old Russia”, “Journalists and Terrorists” by A. I. Herzen, “Our Foreign réfugiés”, “Note for the publisher of “Kolokol” M. N. Katkov, the forerunner of “Severnaya pchela”, which today are convincingly attributed as belonging to N. S. Leskov), allows you to identify important differences in the socio-cultural positions of representatives of the “conservative” bodies of the domestic press and draw conclusions about copyright strategies for creating journalistic statements. The article draws conclusions about the influence of this controversy on the social and literary fate of writers, it is noted that the controversy with Katkov anticipated a sharp cooling to Herzen of Russian society in the following 1863, when, after the publisher of “Kolokol” supported the Polish uprising, the newspaper's circulation fell sharply to 500 copies, equally significant was the controversy of 1862 for Leskov, whose only beginning literary path almost came to an end as a result of harassment by the “progressive” press, and in the mind of the writer, the name Herzen began to be forever associated with the St. Petersburg fires, the imposing frivolity of revolutionary agitators and the sacrificed lives of young fanatics, which was reflected not only in the subsequent “Herzen” essays of Leskov, but also in his artistic prose. In this regard observations on Leskov's articles are especially relevant, the originality of the early journalism of which still remains a little-studied phenomenon of Russian culture.

Abstract:
The Late Holocene phases of aeolian processes have been reconstructed on the basis of dune fields construction. The palaeoenvironmental studies were targeted to following problems: 1) to determine the periods of higher and lower activity of aeolian processes; 2) to establish the age of aeolian deposits and buried soils; 3) to retrace the development of coastal landscapes. The age was determined by radiocarbon dating of paleosols and tephrostratigraphy. The correlation of tephra was performed using data on the volcanic glass chemical composition. The dunes formed during the cooling accompanied by a minor regression. Six buried soils found in the dunes reflect stabilization and overgrowing of dune fields. The longest period of dune stabilization began after a cold event 2800–2600 cal yr BP and lasted until the Little Ice Age. Paleosols contain the tephra of large volcanic eruptions on Urup (Kolokol volcano), Simushir (Zavaritsky volcano) and Iturup (tephra). Pollen analysis allows us to retrace the development of coastal landscapes. Thickets of dwarf pine developed during cooling, birch forests spread in the Medieval Warm Period, and herb meadows were widely represented on the dunes. Human impact on the coastal palaeovegetation was found. Aeolian sedimentation was high during the Little Ice Age. One of the factors of dune reactivation during the Little Ice Age was increased winter storminess associated with the East Asian winter monsoon. Evidence of active cyclogenesis is the increasing proportion of allochthonous pollen. The modern reactivation of aeolian processes is associated with human activity and storm erosion of dunes.

Abstract:
Now, when the spiritual unity of the Slavic world is undergoing another test of strength, it seems relevant to appeal to the rich historical experience of the relationship of the Slavic peoples. Of particular interest are plots associated with turning points in history, in particular the First World War, when the fate of the Slavic peoples was decided on the battlefields. In this article, the author turns to the Russian right-wing conservative press at the initial stage of the First World War to study the Rusin question. According to him, Russian right-wing conservative publicists showed a genuine interest in the life of Rusins in Eastern Galicia and Bukovina, occupied by Russian troops in 1914. Such periodicals as Groza, Pochaevskiy listok, Susanin, Moskovskie Vedomosti, Russkoe znamya, Kolokol, Zemshchyna covered the following subjects: the history and culture of Rusins, their religious and socio-political life, the Rusin-Polish and Rusin-Austrian relations, attitude to “Ukrainism”, the life of Rusins after the capture of Eastern Galicia and Bukovina by Russian troops, the future of Rusins as part of the Russian Empire. The author concludes that almost all above-mentioned right-wing conservative publications agreed on the perniciousness of “Ukrainianism”, which became widespread in Galicia supported by Polish magnates, as well as on the need for Rusins to transit from Uniatism to Orthodoxy. They also emphasized that the annexation of Galicia and Bukovina had a positive effect on Rusins, the majority of whom were in favor of reunification with Russia.

Abstract:
This article tries to reconstruct and analyze the conflict between students and administration in 1859 at the Kyiv Theological Academy. This conflict was different from the rest because it was not typical for this educational institution and, finally, grew into an open protest of students by XX and XXI courses against the administration of the educational institution. This is the first open protest of students, which, among other things, was made known outside the Academy. In 1861 the newspaper “Kolokol” published a collective statement from 1859 of the students of the Kyiv Theological Academy, addressed to the Russian emperor. It talked about the unsatisfactory conditions of providing students. It was not stated how this document ended up in the hands of the editors. The fact that the text appeared in a popular edition banned in the Russian Empire, which, moreover, was republished in Soviet times, shaped the approach to assessing the conflict in the Academy. On the one hand, the student performance remained almost the most famous page not only of the “revolutionary” but also of the everyday history of the Kyiv Theological Academy. On the other hand, most currently known works are not separately about the conflict of 1859. Instead, this is covered in general research on the Kyiv Theological Academy. A main feature of the research that mentions the conflict of 1859 is the emphasis on the superficial causes and consequences of the conflict (there were complaints from students about housing, living conditions, and studying process. Students entered into open conflict, that is why they were expelled from Kyiv Theological Academy). However, this is only a small part of the story. Other studentsʼ motives recede into the background or are not taken into the investigation at all. The article involves personal documents and archival materials (including behavior journals, decisions of the Academic Сouncil, individual notes of the students, etc.), which demonstrate another view of the conflict of 1859. The conflict is able to show the problems in the structure of the Academy, the reactions of the students, and the methods of solving them on the part of the Academy’s employees and teachers. It is proposed to outline the list of participants, trace the actions of students and the administration, and highlight the causes and consequences of conflict for both sides.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the general buckling of an axially loaded column using the finite element method with different slenderness ratios of axes x-x and z-z. The paper deals with three different modes of buckling. The conducted numerical experiments have suggested correction factors and appropriate buckling modes of the built-up columns. The obtained modelling results were compared with data on analytical calculations made according to Lithuanian national codes STR and Eurocode 3. The FEM analysis of the builtup column has showed that both codes (STR and EC3) are giving safe enough results for a considered type of conditions for column support.

Kaminski, Jason. "Kolokol : spectres of the Russian bell." University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/421.

Full text
Abstract:
Kolokol: Spectres of the Russian Bell, submitted by Jason Kaminski in fulfilment of the requirements of PhD (Humanities and Social Sciences) candidature at the University of Technology, Sydney, is an interpretative history of Russian bells (kolokola) and bell music (zvon). As a cultural object and sign, the Russian bell is associated with ideas of transcendence, and ideological and creative ‘vision.’ This interpretation of the signification of the kolokol as a sign arises directly from the perception that the bell is essentially a physical (anthropomorphic) body that is capable of ‘projecting’ or ‘transcending’ itself in the form of a spectrum. This essential ‘spectrality’ defines a history of the Russian bell as an instrument of magical, spiritual and religious ritual, as a cultural artefact associated with changing ideological movements (paganism, Christianity and communism) and as a sign represented synaesthetically in image, sound and text. Ethnographic and campanological studies observe that the kolokol ‘reflects Russian social history like a mirror’, representing the ‘voice of God’ or Logos as an aural or ‘singing’ icon, pointing to the primordial origins of language. This dissertation further investigates the idea that the kolokol acts as an ‘acoustical mirror’ and ‘ideological apparatus’: a medium or spectre through which Russian history and culture is interpellated and reflected. The various logical streams (storytelling, legend, script, text, song, cultural theory, philosophy and ethnography) that contribute to this dissertation form a textual ‘polyphony’ through which the essential meanings and ‘personae’ of the kolokol as a cultural object are interpreted. The bell is regarded as presenting an enigma of signification that must be resolved through investigation and definition. The thesis concludes that the kolokol acts as an iconic sign of the creative ‘Word’ (Logos) and as a symbolic sign that implies a ‘bridge’, copula or psychic ‘hook’, articulating the relationship between the cosmos and consciousness, the material and spiritual, the real and imaginary. Keywords: Russia, Russian History, Russian Arts, Russian Music, Russian Poetry, Russian Political History, Russian Orthodoxy, Russian Revolution, Bell-founding, Bell Music, Bell-ringing, Campanology, Iconology, Kolokol, Zvon. Koloko, Mampai Rosie. "The role of the school management team in implementing the development appraisal system / Mampai Rosie Koloko." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2879.

Full text
Abstract:
The research deals with the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) which was introduced in 1998 to address the professional development of teachers in the Republic of South Africa. This process was influenced inter-alia by the following challenges which seem to be faced by teachers, namely: development of teachers' professionalism, personal growth, and promotion of teachers. The purpose of this research was to determine the role of the school management team (SMT) to implement the required Development Appraisal System (DAS) as part of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). The focus of this research was the professional development of teachers, which inevitably involves the role of the school management team (SMT) in implementing the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) in schools. The role of the School management team was subsequently studied in relation to the implementation of the DAS policy with a focus on the composition of the SMT, the roles, responsibilities and core duties of the different members of the SMT. The collected information from the literature review formed a basis for the development of a management plan as part of a theoretical framework for the school management team to effectively implement the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) in the school. The research made use of a qualitative case study to determine the extent of the role of the school management teams to implement the Development Appraisal System policy in a primary school in the Lichtenburg APO. Data was collected through the use of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The target population of this research was the members of the school management team as well as purposefully selected teachers from a specific school. Findings include amongst other insufficient competence of school management members to implement the Development Appraisal System effectively. Guidelines were accordingly formulated for the improvement of the expertise of the school management team to implement the Developmental Appraisal System in the school that serves as the study population for the qualitative case study. The research concluded that if the Developmental Appraisal System is effectively implemented according to policy and by taking into account the needs of the teachers; it may be to the benefit of all stakeholders of the school community.

Kolokoto, Mamotsekua Gladys. "The role of school management in promoting healthy learning environments for Grade R learners / Mamotsekua Gladys Kolokoto." Thesis, North West University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13150.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of school management in promoting healthy school environments for Grade R learners in the Sedibeng West District. A literature review revealed that there are two types of health programmes: those that support the curriculum and those that are part of the curriculum. School managers have to focus on both in their efforts to promote health in schools. South African schools adapted a Whole School Approach in creating and sustaining healthy environments. Whole School Approach includes the development of health policies, health education, community, learner, teacher involvement, nutrition and prevention of communicable diseases. A qualitative research approach was used and data was generated by means of interviews, documents, photographs and narratives. Four research sites were purposefully selected and four principals, three Heads of Departments for Foundation Phase, four health coordinators and four Grade R practitioners participated in this research. Only one of the research sites had a School Based Health Centre. The study revealed that curriculum-based health programmes including physical education, physical activities and health education were effectively implemented although they were not effectively monitored and evaluated. Health programmes supporting the curriculum include nutrition, first aid and health services. Both health services and nutrition were effectively implemented and monitored whilst there were serious problems with first aid. Practitioners were not trained for first aid, in the three schools where first aid kits were available were not checked therefore not replenished. In one school there was no first aid kit, thus, there was not much focus on precautionary measures in the participating school. There was therefore, no strategies in place for the management of health programmes that support the curriculum.
