Abstract:

Abstract:
The Komi-Permiaks and Their HomelandAccording to the Soviet 1989 census, there was a total of 496,600 Komis in the USSR. The nationality is composed of two main groups, closely related to each other ethnically, culturally and linguistically: the Komi-Zyrians and the Komi-Permiaks. The former are numerically larger, amounting to 344,500 in 1989, while the latter numbered 152,100. The status of the two as distinct ethnic groups is still debated, but in terms of territorial administration the two groups have been treated separately. The Komi-Zyrians have the Komi Republic as their titular unit, whereas the autonomy of the Komi-Permiaks is of lower rank, an autonomous okrug (area) within the Perm’ province. In line with the administrative separation, Soviet language planners classified the two groups’ languages as distinct ones.

Abstract:
The question of Komi-Yazva separate language or Komi-Permian dialects is currently open. There are different opinions: linguists of the late XIX - early XX cent. suggested that it is a dialect. In the early XXI cent. opinions of the scientists were divided and some experts supposed that Komi-Yazva can be a separate language. Currently, on the LinguoDoc platform there are special program modules, which reproduce the etymologist's big data analysis results, as well as 16 dictionaries of Komi dialect related languages with etymological connections. These are audio dictionaries, materials for which were collected in 2015-2018, and archival dictionaries of the XVIII-XIXcent. As a result of the dictionaries’ processing with the use of special comparative-historical module for phonetic and etymological criteria, it was found that the distance from the Komi-Yazva to the modern dialects of the Komi-Zyryan and Komi-Permyak languages is significantly greater than between the latter two ones, so in terms of phonetic changes, Komi-Yazva is currently a separate language. In the XVIII. cent. Komi-Yazva was close to the Komi-Permyak dictionaries recorded by P. S. Pallas and Nikita Ovchinnikov. As the analysis shows, 250 years ago, Komi-Yazva and Komi-Permyak languages had only minor dialect differences, but over the next two centuries, the Komi-Permyak dialects had many innovative changes, which brought them closer to the Komi-Zyryan dialects of the Komi Republic, whereas the Komi-Yazva language presents the archaic stage of Komi languages: the features, which were the characteristics of the Komi-Permyak first dictionaries in the XVIII-th. century.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the perception and verbalization of somatic (bodily) codes of culture in the conditions of bilingualism and biculturalism. The ability of Komi-Permian bilinguals to identify somatic codes of their culture was revealed. The experiment was conducted in the form of an individual questionnaire in the Komi-Permyak district of the Perm region of the Russian Federation. The experimental material was created using the method of generalized portrait. Two images of real girls (Komi-Permyak and Russian) were superimposed on each other with the help of Face Morph program. “Artificial” person is obtained as a result, which combines somatics representatives of two non-related ethnic groups (Indo-European and Finno-Ugric). Three images (Russian, Komi-Permyak and “artificial” faces) were presented to respondents. It is established that the Komi-Permians recognize faces somatic code well. In the conditions of bilingualism and biculturalism somatic codes of culture in the consciousness of Komi-Perm change more slowly than in Russian. 62% of Komi-Permyaks choose the face of their ethnic group. The Komi-Permians “artificial” person likes least of all (9% of respondents). 29% of the Komi-Perm choose Russian face. Interpretation of the code is a subjective process and often depends on personal perception in the control groups of Russians. Russians choose an “artificial” person is 4 times more often than the Komi-Permians. Choose more often (52%), Komi-Permyatskiy face the Russians, who constantly live in the Permian Komi district. Russians who are not affected by Komi-Permyak culture choose Komi-Permyak face in 42% of cases. Russians Komi-Perm district choose the Russian face 6 times less likely (8,7%) than face of Komi-Permyaks (52%). Komi-Permians choose a Russian face 3 times more often (29%) than the Russians themselves. The analysis of verbal responses showed that the physicality in the minds of the Komi-Perm with mental and moral characteristics, not physical. These characteristics are actual bodily identifiers for the Komi-Permians.

Abstract:
Basic aspects of history of creation of the Komi Autonomy are considered. It is noted that in the beginning of 20th century the territory of modern Republic of Komi was divided between four provinces, but Ust-Sysolsk was perceived as the informal centre of the Komi land. It is elucidated that in 1918 Komi politician D. Ya. Popov suggested to proclaim Komi Autonomy, and this idea was carried out in 1921 when the Komi Autonomous Region was formed. It is shown that D. A. Batiev made the major contribution to this process. It is noted that the majority of Komi politicians supported the creation of autonomous republic, but the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed only in 1936. It is revealed that the territory of the Komi Autonomy was repeatedly changed.

Abstract:
Within the context of the general ethnic and cultural 'revival' of post-Soviet society, this thesis is an examination of the Komi ethnic movement that is developing in the autonomous Komi Republic of northwest Russia, and specifically of the attempt to build an indigenous bilingual Komi elite. While the Soviet ethno-federal hierarchy did provide for some development of non-Russian elites, differences between the status of union and autonomous republics in this hierarchy were duplicated in policy on ethnic elite formation. As a people accorded only autonomous republic status, Komi were marginalised within the Soviet system of elite training. Komi did, however, develop cultural elites while the political apparatus remained controlled by non-Komi or at best, by those assimilated Komi fundamentally without a knowledge of the language. Consequently, the Komi movement was very much unprepared to grasp the new political opportunities offered by perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet state and since 1991, several issues have been of increasing significance to Komi: language revival, educational reform, and most importantly rural renewal, as it is in the villages that the majority of the ethnic Komi/Komi speaking population lives. The lack of an experienced political leadership, however, has been a fundamental weakness in the current programme of 'revival'. Recognised early on by the ethnic movement, this problem was addressed in 1994 through the creation of the Finno-Ugrian Faculty (FUF) in the local university (Syktyvkar State University), which I identify as the intended institutional structure for the development of Komi elites. This research explores the strategic and practical debates amongst the emerging post-perestroika Komi leadership, and involves sociological discussion of the issues of rural exclusion, elite recruitment, and perceptions of ethnicity, all taking into consideration the actual and perceived role of the Komi language in society.

Abstract:
Abstract This study analyses environmental concern in the Komi Republic from the contextual perspective. The main research data consisted of thematic interviews of industrial workers (n = 114), teachers (n = 30), administration staff (n = 33) in the towns of Usinsk and Vorkuta in the Northern Komi Republic. In addition, the in-depth thematic interviews of state administrators, scientists and NGO actors are analysed as well as the survey study conducted in several regions in the republic. As a broad theoretical frame the study uses the context model, in which environmental concern in everyday life is interpreted at five closely connected levels. The study consists of four previously published articles, one submitted manuscript and a concluding chapter. As the major theoretical and methodological idea the study presents two different environments: a life-world of the individual, where environmental changes are perceived and experienced in a framework of everyday life, and secondly, global environmentalism’s Environment, which is nowadays in Western discourses viewed as a globe. This study focuses on the life-world perspective, and asks how these two environments communicate with each other in the particular contexts of the Komi Republic. In general, environmental issues hold a low profile compared with other social problems in the Komi Republic. However, the citizens of the Komi Republic are concerned about so-called ’brown‘ environmental issues; that is issues of pollution and waste disposal in their immediate environs. The public’s environmental concerns are mostly about ’ecological risks‘ – the health and well-being implications of environmental degradation. Environmental problems are regarded as part societal transformation. This ’brown‘ environmentalism is understandable in Russia since approximately 60 million Russians now live in zones with adverse environmental situations. Green or global issues are not much discussed among the public of Russia. The findings stress that engagement with the surrounding environment, local conditions and socio-political contexts shape perceptions and framings of environmental change. Local perceptions and local knowledge are still a crucial basis for concern

Abstract:
Auditory feedback has been shown to be highly effective at teaching new skills to athletes in a variety of sports. This method consists of targeting a routine, breaking down the specific skills required to complete the routine, and training an individual on those skills using an auditory device to provide feedback on correct responses. This study evaluated the effectiveness of auditory feedback for improving a judo technique. One set of techniques taught in judo are standing throws, which require a partner to receive the technique (uke.) These throws require specific skills to successfully implement the technique. Auditory feedback was evaluated within a multiple baseline across participants design to increase skills for one specific standing throw, ippon seoi nage (one armed shoulder throw.) The skills were scored on a seven item checklist. All participants improved their performance on ippon seoi nage at a quicker pace than what was observed during baseline.

Full text
Abstract:
Nomadic pastoralism is a form of animal husbandry characterised by movement. Herders and their animals move across the tundra and taiga displaying a curious dichotomous relationship of control by and response to each other. This field based research – carried out among Komi nomadic reindeer herders of the Russian far north – examines how Komi pastoral nomads choose a particular time, route and length of migration. This was explored by using anthropological as well as ecological methods to (i) identify how social and political change and environmental variability influence the reindeers’ and herders’ movements alike and (ii) examine how nomadic movements occur in relation to non-ecological and ecological factors. It was found that there were essentially two types of human/animal movements; individual movements (made by the duty herder and his herd) and collective movements (made by the brigade). Both types of movement, in time and space, were fundamentally dependent upon herding skill and knowledge, and herd control: (a) the duty herder’s ability to maintain herd cohesion and (b) the general aim of preventing harm befalling the herd (by avoiding dangerous terrain). The duty herder’s selection of pastures was, therefore, made mainly according to where reindeer were the easiest to control. It was also found that individual movements could best be understood as emanating from the interplay between reindeer behaviour and the duty herder’s actions. This interplay is best described as being the duty herder’s skilful perception of and response to ethological changes, as advocated by Tim Ingold. Its main principle is based on the duty herder’s maintenance of herd cohesion, within a restricted territory, which has minimal impact upon reindeer behaviour, and which is achieved through skilful manoeuvring. Collective movements could best be described as a means of providing duty herders with the necessary space in which to manoeuvre their herds with the minimum recourse to herding techniques (such as grouping and re-grouping, stopping and turning the herd), and the avoidance of undesirable pasturing areas. A new model for analysing nomadic pastoralist movement – focusing on the interrelations between nomads and their animals and the impacts that individual factors have upon it – is proposed.

Abstract:
Any mentioning of "Gulag culture" as an integrant part of Russian cultural history was banned during 73 years of the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, its notion comprises a multitude of realities. Understanding its complexity requires careful considerations which should be embedded in the context of historical dynamics that governed Soviet society under Josef Stalin. The present research work attempts to address the history of the Gulag throught Soviet ideology and culture, namely performings arts. Thus the thesis shows that "Gulag culture" was a subculture in Stalin's society. It was the embodiment of the prisoners' civilization that affected thousands, even millions, of "slaves" that the Soviet authorities created as an instrument for an economic need. The cultural frameworks in the forced labor camps embraced heartily propaganda and political agitation, but, at the same time, the full-fledged theatre companies composed of prisoners (creative intelligentsia representatives) who put great effort in spreading artistic activities within the camps played a very particular role. In some way, the phantasmagoric reality, which reigned in the camp theater, helped to overcome difficulties and an absurdity of the imprisonment. After all, there existed, in the country burdened under the weight of ideology, a "parallel" society with its own mode of life and culture

Abstract:
Land Degradation Neutrality Framework (LDN) is an approach currently being developed to address land degradation on a global scale. LDN is one of the key approaches to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (goal 15 «Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss»). On the example of the Komi model forest in Komi Republic, Russia, we analyze applicability of the LDN global indicators to the boreal forests of Russia. We also propose options for adapting the LDN international methodology for assessment of boreal ecosystems degradation processes.

Abstract:
The article analyses the dynamics of the size and national composition of the population of the Komi Republic from 1926 to 2020. A classification of rural settlements by economic specialization and dominant nationality is proposed. The research examines 725 rural settlements and groups of settlements of the Komi Republic. Based on demographic data at the level of settlements, the article demonstrates the impact of economic specialisation of settlements on ethno-demographic processes in the republic in the period after 1970. The study shows that rural settlements specialising in agriculture, as well as with a predominant Komi population or without a dominant nationality, are more demographically stable. The research findings reveal changes in demographic trends in recent decades and make it possible to assess the demographic prospects of the region.

Abstract:
In this paper, the significance of Zyryan passes as a method of customary legal communication, common among the Komi people, is considered. Particular importance is given to the analysis of the functions of passes as generic property signs. It is shown that the Komi-passes represented one of the types of objectification of customary legal imperatives. Special attention is paid to the polysemy of the pass, its form and structure.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Hedrick, Ronald, and Herve Bercovier. Characterization and Control of KHV, A New Herpes Viral Pathogen of Koi and Common Carp. United States Department of Agriculture, January 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2004.7695871.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
In this project we proposed to characterize the virus genome and the structural virion polypeptides to allow development of improved diagnostic approaches and potential vaccination strategies. These goals have been mostly achieved and the corresponding data were published in three papers (see below) and three more manuscripts are in preparation. The virion polypeptides of KHV strains isolated from USA (KHV-U) and Israel (KHV-I) were found to be identical. Purified viral DNA analyzed with a total of 5 restriction enzymes demonstrated no fragment length polymorphism between KHV-I and KHV-U but both KHV isolates differed significantly from the cyprinid herpesvirus (CHV) and the ictalurid herpesvirus (channel catfish virus or CCV). Using newly obtained viral DNA sequences two different PCR assays were developed that need to be now further tested in the field. We determined by pulse field analysis that the size of KHV genome is around 280 kbp (1-1. Bercovier, unpublished results). Sequencing of the viral genome of KHV has reached the stage where 180 kbp are sequenced (twice and both strands). Four hypothetical genes were detected when DNA sequences were translated into amino acid sequences. The finding of a gene of real importance, the thymidine kinase (TK) led us to extend the study of this specific gene. Four other genes related to DNA synthesis were found. PCR assays based on defined sequences were developed. The PCR assay based on TK gene sequence has shown improved sensitivity in the detection of KHV DNA compared to regular PCR assays. </P> <P><SPAN>With the ability to induce experimental infections in koi with KHV under controlled laboratory conditions we have studied the progress and distribution of virus in host tissues, the development of immunity and the establishment of latent infections. Also, we have investigated the important role of water temperature on severity of infections and mortality of koi following infections with KHV. These initial studies need to be followed by an increased focus on long-term fate of the virus in survivors. This is essential in light of the current &quot;controlled exposure program&quot; used by farmers to produce KHV &quot;naturally resistant fish&quot; that may result in virus or DNA carriers. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN>The information gained from the research of this project was designed to allow implementation of control measures to prevent the spread of the virus both by improved diagnostic approaches and preventive measures. We have accomplished most of these goals but further studies are needed to establish even more reliable methods of prevention with increased emphases on improved diagnosis and a better understanding of the ecology of KHV. </SPAN>
