Full textBackground: Communication is a two-way interaction where information is transmitted between the parties. Communicating, verbally or non-verbally, involves communicating messages, sharing information and establishing, enhancing or influencing relationships. Information is transmitted via language, audio or code as body language. These factors are essential for communication, but also for nurses to be able to perform good and safe care. Hence, it is interesting to investigate factors that affect communication and make them visible to ensure the nurses' continued work with evidence-based nursing. Purpose: The aim of the literature review was to describe factors that influence communication between nurse and patient based on nurse perspective. Method: A literature review with inductive approach. Result: The result emerged from nine scientific articles of qualitative design. The articles were summarized and presented in four main themes; language barriers, interpretation at linguistic confusion, non-verbal communication and nurse-patient relation. Conclusion: Language barriers is one factor that affects communication. A strategy is to use an interpreter. When using nonverbal communication, other strategies are used, especially body language but also utility aids. The opportunity for a good communication is influenced by the relation between nurse and patient. When difficulties occur in the nurse-patient communication, time becomes a shortcoming.

In Sweden the death of about 90 000 people each year and the number who die elsewhere than in hospital increases. This places greater demands on the palliative home care. Through education and guidelines can nurses in palliative care give patients and relatives increased quality of life and allow the choice of place to end his life.
The aim: of this study was to investigate if the interaction between nurse, relatives and patient facilitates a good care and death in palliative care. Method: The study was conducted as a literature study in which seven quantitative and ten qualitative research articles were reviewed. Results: Four categories were identified that were relevant for nursing care and death in palliative care, Communication, Relationships between nurses, patients and relatives, To die at home or in hospice and The good death. The communication was found to have a large impact on the interaction in the palliative care. The results showed that the communication involved much more than just verbal. Although humor can be regarded as trivial and unprofessional proved to have a significant impact on the interaction and contributed to the nurse came closer to the patient and the relatives. The need for education and knowledge in palliative care were found to be important for nurses but also for patients and relatives to make decisions about where and how the patient wants to be nursed.

Full textBackground: When a person suffers from cancer their entire world changes. A lack of knowledge creates a feeling of not being able to adequately grasp the situation, which is why it is important that the nurse provides decent caregiving with emphasis on entirety and communication. Purpose: The purpose of the literature study was to describe patients' experiences of the nurse's approach in relation to cancer treatment at hospital. Method: A literature review that is based on ten qualitative articles. Result: Through analysis, three main categories were found: The importance of wide knowledge by the nurse, The importance of a good nursing relationship and The importance of good caretaking that benefits the patient's well-being and their will to participate. Method of discussion: The reason, as to why there were not many articles found on the subject matter, is due to the fact that there is more research conducted from the nurse's perspective. The preunderstanding was confirmed and the authors get more insight in how important two-way communication is. Discussion of result: The patient wishes to feel involvement from the nurse and a good relationship between the two arises when good communication exists

Full textMore than 90 000 dies in Sweden every year and the nurse has a central role in the care of dying patients. Communication is an important part in the care of dying patients. The aim of this study was to find factors which have an influence on the communication between the nurse and the dying patient – from a nurse perspective. The method used was a literature review with a systematic approach. The results, based on ten scientific articles, showed that factors which influence communication was the nurses attitudes to communication, attitudes to death and religious believes, fear of upsetting the patient and make them loose hope, experience and education. Other factors found were the organization and environment, support from the head nurse and by colleges, the patient and the relatives and finally the relationship between the nurse and the patient.

Full textIn palliative care, communication is a central concept. Communication can have several purposes, one of which is to create relationship. The overall goal of person-centered communication is to actively listen to the patient's story and identify the person with their viability and own resources. Listening is not a passive process but involves listening to both experiences and feelings in the situation. To hear what is said and how it is said. With various ways of actively listening, an important therapeutic intervention is created, as communication can alleviate symptoms, create understanding of information and the conditions for participation and co-determination. A good communication creates hope, leads to security and helps the patient to feel understood and respected. The purpose of the study was to describe the meaning of person-centered communication in palliative care from the perspective of the patient and the nurse. A literature review was chosen as a method for investigating the state of knowledge in the area. Qualitative articles were chosen when the study wanted to describe in-depth knowledge from the patient's and the nurse's perspective. The result showed that person-centered communication gave a feeling of security, respect, participation and symptom relief to the patient. When patients were not listened to or met with disinterest, they felt invisible and less worthy, which caused a suffering. For the nurse, person-centered communication meant an increased understanding of the patient as a person and an overall picture of the patient's situation. Person-centered communication gave the nurse increased knowledge, job satisfaction and professional pride, but could also mean that they felt insecure in their professional role and experienced shortcomings in competence. Both experienced and inexperienced nurses stated in the studies that they needed skills enhancement and education. It also emerged in the studies that culture had significance for the possibility of conducting person-centered conversations. Within inpatient care, limited spaces and time were described as obstacles to person-centered conversations. Nurses in hospice and palliative units instead described both a permissive culture and an environment that facilitated this calls. Patient and nurse meet as human beings, but in different roles and under different conditions. By being actively present in the meeting and listening to the patient's story, the patient is confirmed as a person and the dignity is maintained. The meeting creates a mutual understanding of each other's knowledge, expectations and conditions. The patient is involved and receives a greater responsibility and influence over their own care. The conclusion is that person-centered communication in palliative care is an important basis for experiencing dignity, security, meaningfulness and personal development for both the patient and the nurse and a prerequisite for the care being person-centered.

Full textJönsson, J & Persson, TAphasia. A literature review about communication at aphasia caused by a cerebrovascular accident.Degree Projekt, 10 Credit Points. Nursing Programme, Malmö University: Health and society, Department of Nursing, 2007. Aphasia is a common name for several speech disabilities and this can affect people in all ages. Approximately 12 000 people develop aphasia every year in Sweden and it is a common sequel after a cerebrovascular event. The patients and their relatives feel a frustration when they can not communicate with each other, and the nurse needs to support both parties. The aim of this review-study was to illuminate the communication between the nurse and the patient with aphasia. The questions at issue were: which methods does the nurse use when communicating with the patient? How does the nurse experience the communication with patients who have aphasia? How does the patient experience the situation when having difficulties to communicate? This literature study is based on qualitative and quantitative studies. The results show; that methods used by the nurse to communicate include the ability to create a relationship with the patient, show empathy, use physical touch, body language and humour. The nurse experience sympathy for the patient and find the situation most tragic. She or he supports the patient by showing attention and encourage. The patient can be frustrated and depressed by not being able to verbally express himself/herself. The results are discussed on the basis of Virginia Henderson’s theory. A conversation does not necessarily need words, comprehension might also be achieved by using body language and physical touch. Keywords: aphasia, cerebrovascular accident, communication, experience, nurse, patient, relation.

Full textBackground: Professional-patient communication impacts the patients’ health outcome, safety and satisfaction. Earlier research shows a need to further explore patient perspectives of communication as it could make improvements more efficient. Aim: To examine inpatient’s experiences and attitudes towards nurse-patient communication. Method: A systematic review of qualitative studies. Following databases were searched: PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. After searching, checking for relevance and quality assessment, ten articles were examined with inductive content analysis. Results: The patients described communication as a centerpiece of their care. Kindness, empathy and respect was considered key elements in establishing effective communication as it made the patient feel safe and acknowledged. Individualized information was highly requested by the patients, as well as being involved in decision-making. Questionable attitudes and inadequate information/involvement made the patients feel abandoned and in some cases, especially during nursing care, it caused a sense of violated personal integrity. Registered nurses that were busy and/or failed to make patients feel acknowledged and understood made some of the patients omit signs of deterioration or less likely to approach them when in need of nursing care. Conclusion: Patient harm is reduced or prevented when nurses are able to establish effective communication based on kindness, empathy and respect towards the patient. When effective communication fails, patients are likely to feel abandoned and/or miss-treated.

Full textBackground: As far back as there are written sources there is possible to identify humour elements in human culture. Humour affects social interactions, is used to show appreciation, create feelings of social connectedness, form bonds between people and maintain and strengthen relationships. Traditionally the nurse’s role has been relatively limited and the focus has been strictly medical. The nurse’s role has expanded and involves personal relationship building characterized by commitment and to see the whole person – a person-centered care. Aim: To describe how humour is used in health care and how it is perceived, from a patient and nurse perspective. Method: A literature review of data collection from databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed and Ageline. Results: The Nurse Perspective describes how nurses use humour in healthcare to promote a therapeutic relationship with the patient and preserve the patients' identity and create a sense of security and trust. Further, humour was used as a strategy to cope with the heavy work the nurse carries out and to improve teamwork. The Patient Perspective describes how patients deliberately use humour to receive better care and to aid the nurse. Mostly, humour in health care was patient initiated and is also used by patients as protection and to lighten up difficult situations. Both patients and nurses believed that humour is inappropriate in some situations. Discussion: The results are discussed on the basis of Katie Eriksson nursing theory and was related to the consensus concept health. Humour plays a central role in nursing and to deepen the nurse-patient relationship. It seems to have effects on psychological well-being. Despite this, humour is usually patient initiated and in order to provide person-centered care nurses should make greater use of humour as a tool used in their profession.

Full textBackground: Fifteen percent of all encounters in hospitals or health care facilities are perceived by health care staff as difficult. Difficult encounters have wide range of consequences for both the patient and health care professionals. A “difficult” patient is more likely to receive inadequate treatment and be treated with less respect. What constitutes a difficult patient is not well-defned, and they may be characterized by a broad range of personal and behavioural characteristics as well as symptoms. There are critical arguments against the verbal use of the difficult patient concept, as it may have a stigmatizing and discriminating effect on such a patient. Aim: Describe the strategies used by health care professionals when dealing with the “difficult patient”. Methods: The study is a literature review, in which the results of eleven scientific journal articles are compared and contrasted. Results: The main results reflect the strategies health care staff use when dealing with the “difficult” patient. From the litterature, five strategic categories have emerged. These categories include: Build relationship, Contact and communication, Closeness and distance, Help and support and Avoidance and control. These include both strategies that promote a good relation with the patient and strategies that lead to negative consequences for both patients and health care professionals. Conclusions: Strategies used by health care professionals when caring for patients perceived as difficult focus on achieving effective communication and a good relationship. These strategies emphasize listening, giving time and acting with empathy, respect and honesty. There are also strategies that control the patient or restrict the patient’s personal freedom. Relevance to clinical practice: This thesis presents an overview of which strategies exist for dealing with so called difficult patients, knowledge of which is vital for health care professionals working in clinical practice. This can lead to improved patient safety and health care of higher quality for a vulnerable and exposed group of patients, as well as a better working environment for the health care staff.

• Hur denna individualiserade omvårdnad beskrivs i omvårdnadsteoretisk litteratur
Individualized care is something both patients and healthcare personnel strive for. To legitimate individualized care as something to strive for an abutment to nursing care theories is necessary. The aim of this study is to investigate:
• What individualized care is
• How it is described in scientific nursing care literature
• How individualized care can be obtained
• What the caring process can look like when it is not individualized
The data consists of scientific nursing literature from late 19thcentury to present time and the result shows that individualized care is the foundation that good care is built upon. Good and individualized care is created in an equal relationship between nurse and patient, a relationship where the nurse listens and communicates a good and individualized care is created. The study has contributed to point out a number of attributes including: relation, empathy, participation and entirety. These attributes constitute to an understanding of the compounded concept individualized care.

Full textTitle: Humor in nursing. A literature review of the meaning of humor in the care relation between the patient and the nurse. Background: Humor has existed in all times. There are different theories that explain the humor's functions. A good laugh relaxes the muscles, improves the immune system, reduces stress and relieves pain. Communication in the care relationship is what builds a care relationship. Person-centered care in the relationship is important and provides the foundation for a good partnership. Aim: This study was made with the aim to enlighten the meaning of humour in the interaction between the nurse and the care taker. Method: A literature review of ten qualitative articles. The literature review has an inductive approach. Result: The result shows that humor can be an aid in nursing care when humor opens for conversations, helps build relationships, promotes well-being and helps the care seeker to handle difficult feelings and situations. For healthcare applicants, the result shows that the use in the care relationship was welcome. However, it should be done with respect for differences and with great caution in difficult situations. Conclusion: Humor plays an important role in the relationship between the patient and the nurse and should be used more.

Full textBackground: Non-verbal communication is a collection name for all the information through wordless cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language, empathy, eye contact, touch, active listening and intonation. Research shows a weakness in non-verbal communication in serious health situations, and that the patient may need more nonverbal communication from the nurse. It is necessary for the nurse to be able to see the patient as a unique individual and understand that each person has their own care needs. Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe nurses’ experiences of non-verbal communication with patients. Method: This thesis is based on literature studies with eight articles. The results are tabulated in five categories. Results: The result is presented in five categories: the nurse's personality factors, inadequate attitude of the nurse, extra difficult communication situations, non-verbal expression of the patient as well as non-verbal social activities. The study shows that communication with patients is seen as good nursing practice and as an important part of the care. In order to build a good care relationship, the staff should see the patient as an individual and have knowledge of non-verbal communication. The nurse's personality and understanding are of great importance when non-verbal communication is used in health care. Discussion: Most nurses lack the ability to capture the non-verbal communication signs of the patient. This needs to be trained, put more value on and appreciated.

Full textBackground: People with dementia often feel alienated because of difficulties in communicating. Caregivers who meet these persons have an important role in supporting wellbeing, quality of life and the possibility to participate in daily care. If communication and treatment is not adapted to the person with dementia and he or she is not seen as unique individual, it can lead to reduction of the person’s capacity. Aim: The aim was to describe how caregivers through communication and treatment can create conditions for persons with dementia to participate in their daily care. Method: Literature review based on 12 articles. Result: It was revealed that caregivers by communicating and responding with presence in the meeting and conveying joy could create conditions for persons with dementia to participate in their own care. Presence in the meeting was to be responsive, distinct and confirm the person. The confirmation could be done by showing interest, respect, trust, support memory and promote equality and community. Discussion: The most important finding was the importance of confirmation, which is supported by the theory behind person-centred care and confirming nursing. There is need for continued research and development of clinical practice about communication and treatment of persons with dementia.

Full textCommunication between two people consists of both verbal- and nonverbal behaviour. The nonverbal communication can strenghten or contradict the verbal communication. In some situations nonverbal communication is much more important and sometimes, it can be a better way to reach a person, than verbal communication. The aim of this study was to reveal the nonverbal communication between nurse and patient and also show its importance. The questions the study answered were: What significance does nonverbal communication have in the nurse – patient relationship and how does the nurse use this knowledge? The theoretical frame of reference for the work was Hilde Eide’s och Tomas Eide’s view of nursing communication. The method was a litterature review which was based on nine scientific articles. The results indicated that empathy, active listening and nonverbal communication are important components in the nurse – patient relationship. The study also found that empathy is a central part of both nonverbal and verbal communication. Understanding and knowledge form an emotional bond between nurse and patient and they create a solid foundation for good health care.

Full textIn the nurse’s meeting with dying patient’s and their relatives there comes up challenges and difficulties. The nurse must be able to act on the basis of her own empathic ability. The aim of this literature review was to illuminate the importance of the nurses empathic relation in palliative care. Joyce Travelbee was used as a theoretical framework. Her nurse theory is based on that the care is an interpersonal process where the nurse takes part in the preventing work which demands to overcome or find the meaning in sickness and suffering. The method used in this literature review has a content analysis approach and is built on 12 research articles. The result shows that the nurse’s empathic ability makes sense in the palliative care. The analyse of the articles resulted in four categories: communication, involvement, trust and confidence and finally teamwork. The nurse’s ability to show empathy sets the ground for patients and relatives faith and hope that the patient will be able to live a meaningful life as possible.

Full textBackground: Many diseases and treatments may affect one’s sexual and reproductive health and/or function [SRHF]. Nurses have responsibility raising the subject with patients by law and national guidelines. Patients’ rights include partaking of correct and enough information to make informed decisions regarding treatment. In spite this patients and nurses state the subject is not broached enough. Aim: The aim is to describe what affecting factors nurses’ experience in discussing SRHF with patients. Method: A general literature review based on six qualitative and four quantitative articles. The articles were analyzed through content analysis. Result: A combination of multiple factors affect nurses’ conversations about SRHF. These have been identified and categorized. “Fear of uncomfortable atmosphere” is a latent theme throughout the other categories “Education and confidence” “Someone else’s responsibility” “Attitudes towards patients’ sexuality”. “Care relationship and ward environment” and “Culture and norms”. Conclusion: The nurses’ desexulization of the patient is an easy way out. Ignoring SRHF will not enable nurses to relieve patients’ suffering. Clinical significance: These identified factors are nothing new. The discussion enlighten new aspects of the nurses’ role of authority in this. Hopefully this review may inspire change and further research.

Full textBackground: The professional relationship between nurses and physicians has existed for a long time. Despite their close interprofessional relation, it is characterized by old norms and structures that complicates the relationship. The nurse has been given a clearer role in health care since the developing of the education which has led to a degree in nursing. The power that previously belonged to the physician now falls between two areas of expertise, nursing and medicine. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses and physicians’ perception of their interprofessional relationship at hospitals and nursing homes in Scandinavia. Method: A literature review based on ten scientific articles from Scandinavia. Result: The result is presented in five categories: the professional relationship, staff turnover, common goal, round and exchange of information and teamwork. The result showed that differences in the professions led to difficulties in communication. The existing hierarchy in healthcare made the communication more difficult, according to both physicians and nurses. Although nurses perceived the communication as inadequate, physicians perceived as adequate. In several studies, lack of co-operation was highlighted in relation to the turnover of physicians. The co-operation and communication were appreciated by nurses when physicians had a permanent position at the ward. The round was highlighted as an important part of the co-operation, where important information about patients could be exchanged. Conclusion: There was a certain discrepancy between nurses and physicians' perception of cooperation. The result shows there are both positive and negative perceptions. Conclusions made from the result show that education in interprofessional co-operation is needed to improve their communication. To make this possible, a professional approach and cooperation are also needed where common goals are established.

Full textBackground: A nurse anesthetist has to be able to create a good individual relationship with their patient, in an environment that is both highly technological and often far beyond what the patient is used to. In the perioperative care, the meeting with the patient and the nurse is often short and intense, with a lot of things happening at once. This place high demands on the nurse´s competence in anesthetic caring. Purpose: To illustrate what characterizes a good interaction between patient and nurse anesthetist pre- and intraoperatively. Method: A systematic literature review with qualitative approach where the results were analyzed using manifest and latent content analysis. A total of 11 articles were analyzed. Results: The analysis resulted in the theme see-listen-feel, that was built upon the two categories interpersonal factors, inner factors and outer factors. These, in turn built on eight subcategories; communication, within sight and reach, preparation and personal knowledge, participation, responsibility, trust, having time and caring in a technological environment. Conclusion: The nurse anesthetist must work from a person-centered approach where the care is adapted to each unique patient. This is done by seeing the patient´s needs, listening to their wishes and getting to know their patient´s personality and desires. It also requires the nurse anesthetist to be able to see beyond the technological environment she is working in and share her attention between the medical tasks that has to be done and the interaction the patient needs to feel safe and confirmed during the perioperative period.

Full textBackground: A humans vulnerability is particularly exposed when dealing with an illness in need of intensive care, when the focus is to survive. Communication is one of the most essential human tools that we can use in interaction with others. Communication is more than just a verbal way of expressing oneself. The aim with the communication is to get to know the patient and explore his or her needs to be able to fulfill them. Aim: the purpose with this study was to describe the importance of communication for a patients feeling of vulnerability, when cared for in ICU and awake on a respirator. Method: Literature study, where 15 qualitative articles was reviewed. Results: three themes developed. The vulnerability caused by dependence on medical staff and lack of control in the critical care environment, next of kins importance to minimize the patients vulnerability and the importance of communication for the patient's perceived vulnerability. Conclusion: although earlier theorist, ethical codes, values, laws and research, about the correct treatment exist, are the meeting with the patient often not prioritized and therefore remain a concern. There is a clear connection between the ICU environment, lack of recovery, loss of dignity, and symptoms as anxiety, stress, panic and fear. It seems that the least research is done on the patient groups that are the most vulnerable, patients receiving care in a country where they do not speak the language or have that language as their mother tongue. The communication improves and vulnerability eases when the patient feel safe.

Full textCommunication is of great importance within health care and many factors may affect thecommunication between nurse and patient. The aim of this literature based study was toemphasize some factors that are important for the communication between nurses andadult patients that are in continuous contact with the care within hospitals or homes for the elderly. The method has been a structured literature based study based on the seven steps of Friberg (2006). The result of the nine scientific articles shows that the patients´ experiences of the communication are affected by factors related to nurses´ personality, nurses´ profession, the individual patient and the environment and organisation. Manypatients were overall satisfied with the communication with the nurses´. The patients that were not satisfied clearly showed what was good and what was not good with the communication.

Full textBackground Schizophrenia is estimated to be one of the ten most disabling conditions in the world with around 20 million people affected. It is the most common psychotic disease and has a negative impact on the person's psychosocial existence and physical health. People with schizophrenia are often exposed to stigma in society, which results in social vulnerability and loneliness. Even in healthcare, stigma is preceded about the disease and being in a care context is for some people with schizophrenia linked to discrimination and feelings of vulnerability. Nurses' professional responsibilities is to treat all people with respect and with an ethical approach. It is of importance that nurses have the competence to care for people with schizophrenia with person-centered care in order to improve their wellbeing mentally and physically. Aim The aim was to describe nurses' attitudes and experiences of treating people with schizophrenia in different care contexts. Method A literature review where the results were based on 15 scientific articles. To find the scientific articles the authors have used the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Clear selection criterias was described in the literature review and articles are sought between year 2010 to 2020. An integrated data analysis has been performed on included results articles. Results The result indicates that stigmatization of people with schizophrenia occurs to a greater extent in nurses with less work experience. An open and honest dialogue emerged as important aspects in the nurse-patient relationship. Conclusions According to the results found, it was shown that higher competence gave more security to the nurses, which clarifies the importance of the right training for nurses to be able to work person-centered. Reflecting on one's own prejudices and one's own attitude can reduce a negative attitude towards people with schizophrenia. The reflection also leads to a reduced stigma of the patient group. Open and honest communication can also promote the relationship between the nurse and the patient and promote well-being.

Full textBackground: Several studies show how nursing shortage is a fact worldwide and that it implicates the quality of patient care.Aim: The aim is too gather information on wheter the communication between patient and nurse affects patient saftey and if nurse shortage has an impact on this.Method: A literature review was conducted. Articles were searched in the following three databases; Pubmed, Cinahl and Svemed and then reviewed based on SBU´s quality template. The articles that was estimated too a high or medium quality were included in the article and the articles whom were estimated too a low quality were omitted from the essay. Results: The results showed that heavy workload and lack of time contributed to unprioritizd communication with the patient. Defective communication was found to have a direct impact on patient safety when misunderstandings arose, incorrect diagnoses were made and in some cases, the patient received incorrect treatment. Patients perceived the workload of the nurses and felt sympathy for them while many felt unfairly treated. Although many patients talked about inadequate communication and an affected relationship between the nurse and the patient, nonetheless, there were some patients who raised positive meetings and also meetings that reinforced the patient's willingness to dare to talk to the nurse about everything, not just the medical aspects. Conclusion: The result shows what devastating consequences a lack of communication can contribute to. Further research and studies that focus on the patients view is considered an important aspect to show how serious it is.

Full textIt requires better communication between medical staff to ensure patient safety. It’s proved that communication is linked to the mistakes that occur in patient care. A special need for further research on communication between nurses and doctors are needed, this for the communication between them is a big part of patient care and safety. The purpose of this study was to illuminate factors that affect communication between doctors and nurses related to patient safety. The study was conducted as a literaturestudy. The results showed that C-HIP and SBAR were useful methods for promoting good communication between the professions and to promote patient safety. It requires good quality of the information and relevant information to foster good communication. Humor, empathy, understanding and openness are factors in behavior that promotes good communication. The hierarchy that still exists is affecting communication between the nurse and doctor negative. Raising his voice, depreciate each other and show a disrespectful behavior are barriers that effects the communication. More courses need to be introduced in the nurse and physician education to promote communication. One suggestion might be to introduce a common course in which professions can practice and also get an insight into each other's work.

akutmottagning.
