Full textBackground: Ineffective communication is the main contributing factor to adverse events whilst receiving healthcare. The use of standardized communication results in improved patient safety and quality of care. A well-proven communication model is SBAR, situation, background, assessment and recommendation. The nurse is responsible for secure information transfer between healthcare personnel which is facilitated by good communication and functioning collaboration and creates prerequisites for person-centered care. The nurse also has a responsibility to contribute towards improvement work on an individual and structural level. Aim: The aim was to illuminate the nurse's perception and experience of the communication tool SBAR. Method: A non-systematic literature review, based on 19 scientific articles of qualitative and quantitative design. Article search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature [CINAHL] and via a manual search. Quality assessment was conducted with regards to the article’s scientific quality. Integrated analysis was used to formulate the result. Results: Nurses experienced fewer mistakes and increased accuracy. They also felt that SBAR affected patient safety and safety climate and how its structure facilitated decision making. Positive aspects of SBAR were described such as its structure, detail, comprehensibility, logic and efficiency. The perception of improved teamwork and collaboration was evident. Nurses also experienced increased self-confidence, which facilitated interprofessional communication. SBAR was perceived to promote interaction, social support and increased the quality of received communication. Conclusions: The result showed how SBAR contributed to beneficial consequences for the individual, the team and the nursing care but also what obstacles exists for its successful implementation. The nurse has a professional responsibility to contribute towards improvement work through personal reflection. By reflecting on communication skills, the organization's structure with regards to information transfer and one’s own experiences, the nurse can contribute towards improved patient safety, collaboration and improvement work.

Full textBackground: A significant reason to many damages and announcements that is done within the healthcare is when verbal or written communication lacks on structure and effectiveness. This can also affect on the patient safety. SBAR is a communication model that is used in healthcare to structure information and present important facts on a fast and effective way, this will also improve on patient safety. Aim: The aim with the study was to examine what nurse students had for knowledge and understanding about the communication model SBAR. Method: The study was a quantitative descriptive study, where data have been collected through a questionnaire that consisted of eleven questions, seven of them were multiple choice, three open alternatives and one were the students had to estimate their answers. Results: The result of the study revealed a limited knowledge and understanding about the SBAR model, only three participants had knowledge and understanding of the model on a total of 25 participants. They considered that the model where easy to use, easy understandable, effective and that the model increased patient safety. Conclusion: In the health care sector, it is extremely important that there is a communication model that facilitates and organizes up communication, such a model is SBAR. The study indicates that the nurse students that participated in the study had a meager knowledge of the SBAR model.

Full textThe purpose of this essay was primarily to seek knowledge about how leaders using the Talkmap method, feel that their attitude and leadership was affected. The study used symbolic interactionism, communication theory, and some leadership theories, to understand and interpret the respondents' different experiences. This study is qualitative with a hermeneutic approach, and the interpretations are based on respondents' experiences of Talkmap. The study used an abductive approach when analyzing the seven semi-structured interviews. The result of the study showed that all respondents felt they had developed their abilities in treatment. They used tools and models in Talkmap, which gave them knowledge of how people like to reflect themselves in each other. This knowledge could be used in interpersonal meetings. One important aspects given by the respondents was that they now felt less stress, since they could control development of conversation. They also felt that the emphasis of the course was on optimism and positivity, which led to the fact that they often reflected on their leadership and how to improve as leaders. The essay concluded that good treatment always can evolve, and by participating in Talkmap the leadership could develop by gaining more tools
