Full textTherapeutic properties of honey forms a basis for its use in the treatment of recalcitrant wounds which can be an alternative to other conventional methods. The purpose of this study was to examine the scientific literature to illustrate which effects the use of honey may be associated with regarding ulcers and patients' experience of treatment. A systematic model with seven stages was used as a method for this study. The literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Medline and the Cochrane Library. Relevant articles were reviewed according to protocol modified by the authors. The results of the eight included studies (nine articles) show that honey is probably equal treatment to other conventional treatments for healing of recalcitrant leg wounds. More high quality research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of honey treatment. Keywords: honey, complementary medical treatment, literature review, recalcitrant leg ulcers, wound healing.

Full textBackground: Eighteen of Sweden's population suffers from long-term pain. The unmeasured data in the presence is not known. Among the older population, 54% of women and 38% prevalence of men, have long-term pain. The pain affects several factors, everything from inferior well-being and physical fatigue, to the impact on social life and work. The costs for society are estimated to cost SEK 87.5 billion annually in direct and indirect costs. Complementary and alternative medicine is a collective term for treatments that are not part of the traditional medical treatment. Examples of treatments include massage, acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), cognitive behavioral therapy (KBT) and meditation/yoga. Aim: To describe patients' experiences and the positive effect of alternative and complementary medicine of long-term pain. Method: A literature review based on 14 scientific articles with qualitative or quantitative approach. Searches have been conducted in CINAHL and PubMed. Results: Three main themes emerged in the result, which was increased wellbeing, pain relief and increased mobility. The studies indicate that the patients experienced good pain relief and increased quality of life both physically and mentally during treatment with complementary and alternative medicine. Patients who have not achieved pain relief through traditional care, experienced good pain relief with complementary and alternative medicine. Conclusion: Complementary and alternative medicine can be an alternative to traditional treatment and sometimes even a first alternative for several reasons, among other things to avoid side effects from drugs.

Full textMost people at the end of life needpalliative care before death.Pharmacologic relief of symptom is themost common treatment, though thiscauses several side effects. The interestin complementary treatments hasincreased lately and both massage andmusic can affect both physiological andpsychological aspects. The aim of this study was to illustratethe meaning of complementarytreatments in palliative care, with focuson massage and music. The study was performed as asystematic review. It appeared that massage and music mayhave significance in several usage areas, such as symptom relief, relaxation, mood and feelings, spirituality andultimately relatives participation andexperiences. It was also shown thatmusic did not always have any effect, and it may have a negative effect onpatients. The complementary therapies may havea significant meaning in the treatment ofpatients receiving palliative care.Physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects can be affected positively, aswell as help to involve family membersin the treatment of the ill and alleviatetheir symptoms, but unless thetreatments are individualized they mayhave a negative effect on patients.Further research is needed to implementcomplementary treatments in thepalliative care and provide evidence fortheir meaning.

Full textBackground: At various stages throughout history, patient care has been implemented through the use of music for medical purposes. Modern research has studied the effect of music as a complement to pharmacological treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and pain. Aim: To study a selection of the available research in order to find evidence on the effects which listening to music has yielded during intra- and postoperative care to prevent PONV and postoperative pain. Method: The study was designed as a literature review. Searches in five databases yielded 76 hits from which 18 were included. The design of the studies was quantitative and 16 were performed as randomized controlled trials. Result: Thirteen of the articles contained evidence which proved that listening to music had positive effects on pain reduction. No study provided any evidence that listening to music reduces PONV. Conclusion: The study proved that letting patients listen to music during the intra- and postoperative phases has complementing effects on analgesics and should thusly be used in practice. There are few risks, and taken together with positive patient experiences furthermore supports the argument, even though the effect on PONV has yet to be proven.

Full textAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric impairment that not only has increased in children but also in adults. It is considered by the Swedish National Board that the increase directs us to a greater knowledge of the diagnosis and the symptoms are more noticeable now since we live in an information society with higher cognitive demands. Foremost in USA, it has become popular to use ADHD coaches as a method complementary to medicine and therapy. The method does exist in Sweden, but it is not a treatment that individuals are informed of or even suggested as a complementary. The purpose of this study is to increase awareness of ADHD Coaching and comparing the method to other treatments for people with ADHD. The results showed that there are effective methods for ADHD, but ADHD Coaching would be a good complementary as it is tailored for the symptoms of ADHD. Viewed from Antonovskys salutogenic perspective, I have used KASAM to support the cognitive aspect and I have used empowerment to support the psychosocial aspect of treatments. My studies and empirical material includes peer reviewed articles and literature on the subject. The results show a need for more empirical studies of ADHD Coaching as well as therapeutically methods for adults with ADHD in particular.
