Fiber-reinforced concrete is a construction material that holds high promise in progressing theconstruction industry. The fibers impact on crackproperties as well as strength means there isa wide array of application areas. Still this material holds a very limited area of application asof today. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of examples and tests in new applicationareas. This work therefore aims to identify whether fiber-reinforced lattice girder elementscan compete with an element reinforced in the traditional way in any of the categories cost, work environment, strength or envi

Abstract:
Taking inspiration from nature, where composite materials made of a polymer matrix and inorganic fillers are often found, e.g. bone, shell of crustaceans, shell of eggs, etc., the feasibility on making composite materials containing chitosan and nanosized hydroxyapatite were investigated. A new preparation approach based on a co-precipitation method has been developed. In its earlier stage of formation, the composite occurs as hydrogel as suspended in aqueous alkaline solution. In order to get solid composites various drying procedures including freeze-drying technique, air-drying at room temp

Abstract:
Total joint arthroplasty surgeries are known to have a high success rate but the longevity of the implants still acts as a limiting factor. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene is the material of choice for the implant bearing surfaces due to its excellent clinical and tribological performance. A common problem associated with the polymer is however the loosening of the implant from its surrounding bone tissue. This phenomenon is caused by a biological reaction to released wear particles. Reducing the release of wear particles will increase the lifespan of implants and can be accomplished b

This work has been performed at the Applied Materials ScienceDivision at The Ångström Laboratory in collaboration with SandvikMining AB. The project is part of the joint research programmeCoFree. In this work, the problem of finding an impact test method forcemented carbide rock drill inserts is considered. A suitable testmethod is required to benchmark alternative binder cemented carbidesagainst today’s cobalt based grades. The developed test method isbased on a Charpy pendulum arrangement and utilizes, as in rockdrilling, impact of cylindrical bars to achieve the high impact forcesufficient t
