Full textThis dissertation focuses on the problem of the effectiveness of the social campaign in the educational dimension. It is an attempt to answer the question of what determines the effectiveness of social campaigns, and how they affect the individual and society, whether they can be considered a tool of education. I assumed that a social campaign, also called a public awareness campaign, is a set of targeted measures aimed at changing attitudes or behavior and that their organizers, using the social science and others, want to improve the quality of life in the dimension of individual and social life. The main question posed in the dissertation concerns the aims and results of social campaigns and also the determinants of their effectiveness. I was interested in ways of proving the success of a campaign and analysing it. I assumed that the degree of achievement of their aims is a measure of the effectiveness of social campaigns. The dissertation consists of theoretical and empirical chapters. The first four chapters provide an overview of the literature on the subject of the social campaign and discuss the main concepts related to campaigns such as social marketing, communication, social control, attitudes and social advertising. The theoretical part of the dissertation also includes a discussion of the theory of behavioral change and communication theories which explain the mechanisms of the impact of social campaigns on the individual and on social groups. The first chapter presents the main definitions of social campaigns and their theoretical basis. The next chapter tries to indicate the role of campaign in socialization and describe the link between campaign and education and social policy. Social campaigns are a specific form of social communication. The third chapter describes sociological and pedagogical concepts of communication which relate to its different levels - interpersonal, group and mass. The fourth chapter includes the theoretical foundations of social campaigns. It concerns the determinants of changes in the behavior of the individual. This section refers to the theories of behavioral changes and cognitive theories the most frequently quoted in the literature which can be used by the organizers of social campaigns to develop communication strategy actions. This chapter also relates to environmental determinants of human behavior and processes of education. This part of the dissertation attempts to associate social campaigns with social pedagogy and andragogy. In the empirical part of dissertation the objectives, activities and effects of selected social campaigns are analyzed. The last part of the dissertation reflecting the results of the research describes factors affecting the effectiveness of social campaigns and the educational impact of this kind of activities, as well as and indicating further areas of research on the issue of social campaigns. The empirical study is based on qualitative research. I was interested in determinants of the effectiveness of social campaigns, taking into account analysis of the processes of planning, implementation and monitoring of campaigns. The main research technique used in the thesis was the individual semi-structured interview with organizers of campaigns covering such aspects as the beginning of the campaign, ways of identifying and analyzing the social issue which was the subject of the campaign, cooperation between the organizer of the campaign and others involved in implementation of the campaign, objectives of the campaign and its target groups, methods and forms of action and the results of the campaign. Another source of information used in the empirical study besides a interviews were existing data. The materials analyzed in my work related mainly to the results of research conducted during planning of campaigns or used to evaluate progress and results. An analysis of existing data takes into account the relevance and reliability of the methods of evaluating campaigns by their organizers. An important part of the analysis was to compare processes of behavior change discussed in theoretical concepts with activities and results of social campaigns and methods used in their evaluation. The results of my research were mainly descriptive and explanatory. The main part of the empirical study was preceded by a recognition of the role of social campaigns in Poland and in the world, during conversations with practitioners who organize public awareness campaigns on a daily basis and also during participant observation the planning and implementing campaign activities. The campaigns were chosen by purposive sampling. The decisive criteria were the diversity and intensity of the key features for a research problem. I assumed that the analyzed campaigns should vary in the social issues of the campaign and type of expected change. The key features of a research problem were effectiveness and non-commercial aspect. Efficacy was defined as the degree of achievement of the objectives. I assumed that non-commercial campaigns are initiated by public institutions or NGOs working for the benefit of the general public. The results of the research study showed that the social campaigns had mainly educational aims. The campaigns concerned issues related to the area of health education or citizenship. The campaigns promoted an attitude of respect for others and for the law or negated unhealthy behaviors and communicated knowledge about preventive measures. The main messages of the analyzed campaigns referred to one’s or family well-being. Only some campaign websites or brochures included information which presented the social issue in a broader context, taking into account the impact of the behavior on society. My research shows that the organizers of social campaigns resign from their responsibility for the political environment and legal determinant of the social issue which they want to change. Knowledge was considered a key element of behavior change. Research carried out before campaigns by their organizers showed that a frequent barrier to change of behavior is a lack of conviction for the probability of negative consequences of a behavior. Organizers analysed campaigns wanted to increase the visibility of some issues and promote knowledge about their negative consequences. The organizers assumed that messages should be related to the impact of denied behaviors on family members, not to the direct impact on someone who behaves in a certain way. My analysis showed that the message should be related to well-known situations for target groups of the campaign to make them aware of real risks of daily behaviors. The aims of the campaigns included an assumption to get the message to many people. Target audiences of the campaign included various group of people. All the organizers of the campaigns used mass media to reach a target audience, this in their opinion was a basis for the success of every campaign. Social advertising was the most common form of communication used in campaigns. It could arise from the scale of the social issues which the campaign organizers wanted to reduce. The social issues discussed in campaigns were recognized as common problems of society. The conclusion of my research study also include analysis of the results of campaigns. The aims of campaigns in the cognitive dimension were achieved. The results of evaluations carried out after the campaign show that some part of the target audience changed their opinions as regards speeding, divorce and wearing a seat belt. The aims of the campaigns did not specify desired scale changes. Monitoring activities and evaluation of the results of the campaign by their organizers did not include the impact of the campaign on change behavior negated in the messages. The organizers drew conclusion about the degree of achievement of aims related to behavior on the basis of public statistics, which can be affected by factors other than campaign activity.

Full textThe main focus of the thesis is the exploration of early pragmatics in children, in relation to their socio-cognitive development. It presents a coherent set of theories and research on children's ability to use their preverbal and early verbal skills in order to communicate appropriately and effectively, as related to their language and theory of mind development. The three papers included in the thesis focus on three issues which so far have received most attention and space in the field. The first, theoretical paper - Recursion as a common ground o f mental, communicative and linguistic processes - describes how and why complex, recursive socio-cognitive processes, claimed as involved mostly in language and theory of mind development, can be also identified in early pragmatics. Analyzed from a developmental perspective, the recursive processes are described as crucial not only for linguistic syntax, theory of mind and conversation but also preverbal communication. The second, empirical paper - Relevance matters. Eighteen-month-olds' use o f relevant informative pointing as a predictor o f two-year-olds' language abilities - describes a longitudinal study on the use of relevant vs irrelevant pointing in Polish 18-mont-old children, in relation to their later linguistic abilities. Introducing a new protocol enabling the measurement of relevancy of children's gestures, it reveals the predictive value of relevant pointing for later language production and comprehension. The third paper - Ratunku! or Just Tunku! Evidence for the Reliability and Concurrent Validity o f the Language Use Inventory-Polish - presents an adaptation of a standardized parent-report measure, used to assess children's pragmatic language functioning as influenced by their developing social-cognitive knowledge. The tool demonstrates good psychometric properties and is currently used by researchers or clinicians from different countries. Providing a sound basis for cross-cultural comparisons, the paper reveals the developmental trajectory of pragmatics in Polish-speaking 20 to 44 month-old children. To sum up, the thesis provides a comprehensive and new perspective on the intricate relations of pragmatics to children's developing socio-cognitive skills; reveals new, additional processes underlying its links to language abilities in Polish children; and: makes a first step toward the development of a Polish version of a standardized parent-report questionnaire enabling its assessment. It concludes by proposing some important issues that should be targeted in future research.
