Abstract:
AbstractThe poetical theory of Konrad von Würzburg very often is regarded as a medieval anticipation of modern aesthetics. The article, however, tries to describe in an analysis of the ›Goldene Schmiede‹ and the ›Trojanerkrieg‹ how Konrad in fact goes beyond the poetics and rhetorics of his time, but that he still presupposes that aesthetic values are inferior to religious and moral norms.

Abstract:
Abstract Short epics in Middle High German are a challenge for author attribution procedures as they involve dealing with short texts, incomplete normalisation, and generic tests. Firstly, the paper discusses optimisation methods using basic form and grammar tags extracted from the ‘Mittelhochdeutsche Begriffsdatenbank’ (Middle High German Conceptual Database). As part of this, an evaluation test with normalised Middle High German texts is carried out where 20 texts with known authorship are used as ‘guessing texts’ and a further 19 works of the same authors as ‘comparison texts’. The use of grammar tags or basic forms, instead of inflected word forms leads to a deterioration of the recognition rate and the combination of basic forms or grammar tags with word forms leads to a slight improvement. Secondly, the authorship of the ‘Halbe Birne’ will be investigated with eight texts by Konrad von Würzburg, as well as a comparative corpus of 14 tales (German ‘Mären’) and seven novels. This leads to a direct calculation of which words can be specifically ascribed to Konrad von Würzburg. This method is first evaluated by determining the distinctive words on four Konrad texts; a control test on four other Konrad texts shows that a preferred use of the distinctive words leads to a significant increase in the recognition rate. Then, a Konrad-specific vocabulary is determined on the basis of eight Konrad texts. Using these distinctive words it can finally be shown that Konrad can be attributed with some certainty as the author of the ‘Halbe Birne’.

Abstract:
This article examines the role and function of author attributions in multi-text manuscripts containing Dutch, English, French or German short verse narratives. The findings represent one strand of the investigations undertaken by the cross-European project ‘The Dynamics of the Medieval Manuscript’, which analysed the dissemination of short verse narratives and the principles of organisation underlying the compilation of text collections. Whilst short verse narratives are more commonly disseminated anonymously, there are manuscripts in which authorship is repeatedly attributed to a text or corpus. Through six case studies, this article explores medieval concepts of authorship and how they relate to constructions of authority, whether regarding an empirical figure or a literary construction. In addition, it looks at how authorship plays a role in manuscript compilation, and at the effects of attributions (by author and/or compiler) on reception. The case studies include manuscripts from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, produced in a range of social and cultural contexts, and featuring some of the most important European authors of short verse narratives: Rutebeuf, Baudouin de Condé, Der Stricker, Konrad von Würzburg, Willem of Hildegaersberch, and Geoffrey Chaucer. The preliminary findings contribute to our understanding of author attributions in text collections from across northern Europe and point towards future lines of enquiry into the role of authorship in medieval textual dissemination.

Abstract:
This masters thesis aims at obtaining a better understanding of the character depiction in two Middle High German texts through a precise analysis of the characters and their actions as reported by the author Konrad von Wurzburg. For this study the novellas Heinrich von Kempten and Herzmaere were chosen, because they present characters within two areas of central literary concern to the Middle Ages: Heinrich von Kempten in the area of knighthood and Herzmaere in the area of courtly love.
The study consists of two main parts. The first, which deals with the novella Heinrich von Kempten lists the developments in research from 1970 until the present, describes all characters according to their depiction and actions and concludes with a summary of the results. The second main part of the thesis examines the novella Herzmaere following the same criteria of analysis as Heinrich von Kempten.
