Full textGender discrimination against fathers in custody disputes? Does gender discrimination against men exist in custody disputes and, if so, how do the fathers perceive the treatment from social services? ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to examine whether gender discrimination against fathers exists in custody disputes. The issues and aims used were: (1) To examine whether gender discrimination against fathers exists in custody disputes. (2) If and how fathers perceive a gender discriminating treatment from family law departments. In order to answer the issues a mixed design consisting of a quantitative vignette study and a qualitative analysis of texts was used. The vignette study was directed towards social workers working within family law departments who handle issues regarding custody, residency and access in custody disputes between two guardians. Within the qualitative part, the authors advertised for fathers' personal experiences of a custody dispute. The announcement was made on a forum on the internet, especially aimed at fathers. The results were analysed through a multidimensional perspective. The results of the vignette study showed no evidence of discrimination regarding the respondents risk assessments based on gender. However, the study revealed discrimination against fathers when the respondents were to assess matters regarding custody, residency and access. Here the mother was deemed as the most suitable, despite the fact that the guardians had identical backgrounds. In the qualitative interpretation of texts written by fathers the most prominent was that they were convinced that their gender was a encumbrance in a custody dispute.

Full textBackground: Previous research shows that the audit profession is dominated by men and unequally in sexes exists in the higher positons in the Swedish audit firms (Jonnergård et. al., 2010). The unequally does not depend on that women don’t entry the profession because equally in sexes exists in the entry to the profession (Månsson et. al., 2013). It has shown that women decide to quit the profession and it´s not because they lack of professional skills (Collin et. al., 2007; Lennartsson, 2014a). The male sex is the ideal in the audit profession (Stafsudd, 2011), can the reason of lack of women in the profession depend on that the male sex is promoted in the profession and sex discrimination towards women is the reason to why women leaves the audit profession or why not women reaches the higher positions in the hierarchy? Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to explore and explain were, and if why, in the hierarchy sex discrimination takes expression in the audit profession. Method: A deductive research approach is the underlying approach in this thesis with a quantitative method. Different existing theories, which measures and explains sex discrimination, have been identified and the theories have been tested on empirical material conducted from members in the audit profession in Sweden. Conclusions: The result indicates that sex discrimination exists in the Swedish audit profession and arises already in the positon where auditors usually entry the audit profession. The study finds the organizational structures gender culture is the reason to why the sex discrimination arises in the audit profession.

Full textRecent advances in, for example, machine learning and neural networks have taken artificial intelligence into disciplines such as justice, recruitment and health care. As in all fields subject to AI, correct decisions are crucial and there is no room for discriminatory conclusions. However, AI-systems are, just like humans, subject to various types of distortions, which can lead to unfair decisions. An alarming number of studies and reports show that AI in many cases reflects and reinforces existing gender bias in society. Algorithms used in image recognition base their decisions on character stereotypes of male and female. Voice recognition is more likely to correctly recognize male voices compared to female voices, and earlier 2019 the United Nations released a study showing that voice assistants, such as Microsoft's Cortona or Apple's Siri, reinforce existing gender bias. The purpose of this study is to investigate how gender discrimination can appear in AI-systems, and what constitutes the relationship between gender bias, gender discrimination and AI-systems. Furthermore it addresses how a company that works with the development of AI reason concerning the relationship between gender bias, gender discrimination and AI development. The study contains a thorough literature review, as well as in-depth interviews with key persons working with various aspects of AI development at KPMG. The results show that bias in general, and gender bias in particular, are present at all stages of AI development. It can occur due to a variety of factors, including but not limited to the lack of diversity in the workforce, the design of algorithms and the decisions related to how data is collected, encoded and used to train algorithms. The solutions proposed are partly about addressing the identified factors, but also about looking at the problem from a holistic perspective. The significance of seeing and understanding the links between gender bias in society and gender bias in AI-systems, as well as reconsidering how each factor depends on and correlates with other ones, is emphasized. The essence of the results is that it is not enough to alter any of the parameters unless the structure of the system is changed as well.

The methods used for this study is a content analysis of eight cases from court and threeinterviews with the Swedish equality ombudsman, a labour union organization and a employersunion organization. We have found that the European Union-law has an impact on the justice system. We also foundthat the use of legal usage from the European Union court were more common before 2009 andthe change in swedish law. We found that despite the change concerning the economiccompensation in the new law 2009 that were supposed to promote higher compensation therewere not any signs of higher compensation in the cases.

Full textSex equality law within the European Union is well developed and has since the Rome Treaty, given rise to several directives and other judicial acts on this matter of community law. The concepts of direct and indirect discrimination emerge from the general principles of Equal pay and Equal treatment and have been codified and amended several times until present.
The lasts years, authors within the field of Equality Law has been pointing out that there is a common desire for simplification of discrimination law in Europe. The question has arisen whether this simplification could be implemented trough the introduction of a general justification defence for direct sex discrimination.
The concept of direct sex discrimination - when a person of one gender is treated less favourably, on the grounds of gender, than a person of the other gender would be treated in similar circumstances - leaves no possibilities for such justification today. Indirect sex discrimination – which arises from the equal application of neutral rules that shows an adverse impact on one group – can be justified if the rule answers to true requirements of the job.
Does the proposition that direct discrimination should be justified find support in the inconsistency of the present legislation? This paper will examine this and other questions concerning the wish for a general justification defence through studies of case law from the European Court of Justice as well as differing opinions from authors within the field of equality law.

Full textThe usage of images of women and men in advertisements is subject to regulations regarding their discriminating presentation as sex objects and arrangement as stereotypical gender roles. In Sweden, every person is given the right to file complaints about individual advertisements to Reklamombudsmannen (RO), a self-regulation agency, which analyzes the complaints in accordance to the Consolidated ICC Code and decides whether the reported advertisements infringe the rules laid out by it. These regulations define three categories: 1. advertisements presenting women or men simply as sex objects; 2. advertisements using stereotypical gender roles; and 3. advertisements using obvious gender discriminating imagery. Companies are required to withdraw advertisements that fall under at least one of these three categories as decided by the RO. This thesis aims at comparing the view on the term sex objects, on devaluing stereotypical gender roles and on sexism as exhibited by the RO with the definitions of the same concepts originating from gender theory in order to identify and analyze a possible disparity between them. Starting from the theory of gender systems, this qualitative investigation, in its first step, semiotically analyzes 16 advertisements that have been reported to the RO. The results of these analyses are then compared to the individual verdicts and their reasons as given by the RO. As a result, this comparison shows a discrepancy between the view of the RO and gender theory on discriminating advertisements and imagery. This is due to differing views and definitions of the individual terms discussed in this thesis as well as conflicting opinions as to when this form of presentation of women and men is acceptable, specifically in the area of advertising.

Full textThe purpose of this degree project is to study a work evaluation project in a municipality, on the basis of key participants. The municipality is the employer, per-forming the workplace project and the chief objective is to reach gender equality between the employees. Equal pay for equal work. Through work evaluation is it pos-sible to find out which of a lot of different jobs, which have equal requirements. The jobs, which have equal requirements, should have equal pay.
According to Swedish law, all employers need to analyse and survey their salary/wage distribution, to identify and remedy sexual discrimination concerning that area. One way to do that is to do a work evaluation and to study the result. Studying the result was what the municipality was doing, when got in contact with it. My focus is to find out what the central issues, problems and hinders are, or can occur when an employer is trying to follow the law.
This study is based on qualitative research. The empirical material (interviews and ob-servations) from key participants, who took part in the project in the municipality, is presented through excerpts. They speak about different problems and other aspects they have experienced during the work process with the result from the evaluation project. The material is then analysed in the light of different theories. The theories treat areas as gender and organisation.
For example is not al of the involved unions of the same opinion about the project. Money is one aspect that the key persons talk about and the circumstances around how to reach the goals of the project is another subject. The result of the study has shown that it could be useful within the project to have greater concern about the system of gender and to stronger point out the gains of ex-tended gender equality. Thou a lot of money are needed if equal pay for equal work should be reached, the gain in efficiency from the employed might compensate that.
