Abstract:
In 2012, the Kony 2012 Campaign became the most watched human rights video to date, garnering over 100 million views in just six days. The Campaign relied on easily digestible narratives that encouraged an imperialistic military-legal response to the Lord’s Resistance Army’s use of child soldiers in Uganda. Drawing on Mutua’s (2001) framework of savages, victims and saviours, this article analyses the Kony 2012 phenomenon to illustrate how a digital campaign can validate and reproduce subjectivities and structures of domination rather than stimulate sustainable reform-based change. The article critically reflects on the use of digital technology by the Kony 2012 campaign and considers the potential for ‘slacktivism’ and ‘clicktivism’.

Abstract:
The global success of the film KONY 2012 by Invisible Children, Inc., manifests far greater magical powers than those of Joseph Kony and his ruthless Lord's Resistance Army, which it portrays. The most prominent feature of the Invisible Children lobby is the making and constant remaking of a master narrative that depoliticizes and dehistoricizes a murky reality of globalized war into an essentialized black-and-white story. The magic of such a digestible storyline, with Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony as a global poster boy for evil personified, not only plays into the hands of the oppressive Ugandan government but has also become handy for the US armed forces as they seek to increase their presence on the African continent. As the US-led war on terror is renewed and expanded, Invisible Children's humanitarian slogan, “Stop at nothing”, has proven to be exceptionally selective, manifesting the occult economy of global activism that calls for military interventions.

This dissertation investigates the moral issues related to the circulation of humanitarian campaign KONY 2012 on the Internet, which was created by the organization Invisible Children (IC) in 2012. This campaign has asked people to request international authorities for military support to the Uganda’s government so it can extinguish the actions of Joseph Kony, a leader of a movement responsible for the committal of many heinous crimes. This research is justified by the need to understand the cyber mediated communication and cultural phenomena, which put to the test modes of socialization and political organization, ethical standards and moral positions. Thus, this study is developed with observations and historical and sociological confrontations, seeking to understand the ambiguities and paradoxes of contemporary socialities. Based on methodological perspective indicated by Rüdiger (2011), this phenomenon is studied in two axes: movement and countermovement. The KONY 2012 movement consists in audiovisual productions and text comments that were important to the popularization of the cause. In its turn, the countermovement KONY 2012, in addition of severous audiovisual productions and text comments, also consists of actions that denied the campaign. To conduct the reflections about this subject, this study was guided by theoretical discussions about morals and morality in the postmodern world, based in Giddens (1991), Lipovestky (1994), Vattimo (1994) and Bauman (1997) perspectives. In this investigation, we realized that the movement and countermovement KONY 2012 showed that, despite the apparent unquestionability of the cause, the moral responsibility in the postmodern context remains complex and problematic. On the one hand, it records the possibility of free encounter with other worlds and ways; of the enjoyment of the free will, as an oscillatory experience between belonging and rootlessness in the society of generalized communication. On the other hand, the situation of morality in this context reveals the irresponsibility of subjects: the experimentation and the everyday spontaneous fruition, of the being and of the living on the basis of aesthetic sense, seem to be the best interests. Thus, we discuss that the said emancipatory technologies are not favorable when there is lack of awareness and moral responsibility.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This analysis seeks to understand the power of social media to create sustainable social movements. The 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle were one of the first internet-supported acts of protest and illustrate the power of the Internet and social media to bring together diverse coalitions of actors and maintain decentralized power structures. Next, the analysis studies the non-profit advocacy organization Invisible Children and the recent media explosion of their Kony 2012 campaign to make sense of how uses of the Internet have expanded since 1999. The Kony 2012 case illustrates the power of committed networks in disseminating information but also alludes to some of the new challenges social media presents. Ultimately, this analysis concludes that social media has simultaneously empowered and crippled social media, calling for an intentioned use of the Internet applications, strong leadership, and cultural framing to sustain mobilization.

Abstract:
Background/ Objectives: It can always be recognised that mass media is one of key sources of information to society. Moreover, it has a great power to affect our life. Printed media, for example, newspaper as one of media communications contains words and texts, which can also create a strong power to influence readers to receive information, including news coverage of mental illness. The objective of this study is to analyse our selected the terms of Schizophrenia, Psychosis and Psychotic Patients from our selected three local Chinese newspapers in Hong Kong, to see the frequency and the trend of reporting incidents on news stories, and the use of language/words to portray people with mental illness on press coverage. Research questions were about 1) the change of frequency using the term of Schizophrenia, and under the same question the hypothesis was to see if using the term of Psychosis was more than Schizophrenia; 2) reviewed the term of Schizophrenia to see our selected three local newspapers whether or not choosing the term of Schizophrenia on news coverage more than Psychosis; 3) assessed both terms of Schizophrenia and Psychosis regarding incidents in all articles, the former was related to negative stories and the latter was related to good news coverage. 4) We reviewed the trend of using all keywords akin to metaphorical (words) usage in all articles. At last, 5) we also assessed all keywords in regard to the trend of using of stereotyping wordings in all papers in our selected years. Method: We assessed the database of retrospective newspaper via WiseNews of electronic resource at the University of Hong Kong, to retrieve the total of 1884 articles, from chosen newspapers, for example, Apple Daily, Ming Pao Daily News and Tai Kung Pao Daily News. We retrieved those newspapers in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2012 for our research study. Results: It is good to see that, since 2001 renaming in Psychosis (思覺失調), the term has been widely accepted in the public and has already been used on news coverage. In comparison with both terms of Schizophrenia (精神分裂 [症]) and Psychosis (思覺失調), we noticed that the frequency of using the name of Schizophrenia on printed media has, however, still remained higher than the term of psychosis to portray people with mental illness in all news papers [Schizophrenia – 40.2% 757/1884 /Psychosis – 24.9% 469/1884]. And we also noted that the term of Psychotic Patients was strong association with people in Schizophrenia to appear on same news coverage, according to our research findings. Meanwhile, it can be seen that using Psychosis (renaming in Chinese) on news coverage was increased gradually from 2002 – 2012, whereas using Schizophrenia was a lead in association with criminal cases, with 35/132 of unfavourable events. On the one hand, it can be noted that the trend of metaphorical usage was increased gradually from 2002 – 2012, and in all newspapers the more frequency of using metaphorical words/usage was to insult/cite someone with 46.2% (175/379 articles). On the other hand, it is not surprising to see that the more frequency of using stereotyping words was “Dangerous” or “Violence” to portray people with mental illness in all newspapers, which was highest record with 61.8% (202/327 counted articles) Conclusion: Mass media is generally recognised as key source of information to society, including media coverage of mental illness. Moreover, press media has a great power to influence us. In content analysis of our selected articles, it can be noted that in 2002 –2012, using the term of Schizophrenia was more than using Psychosis in our selected three local Chinese newspapers. It was revealed that the trend of using metaphorical (words) usage in all papers was increased gradually and the more frequency using of both terms was to insult/cite someone. It can be no doubt that inappropriate words and negative descriptive languages to portray people with mental illness on news coverage could influence people’s perception with negative towards psychotic patients. Stigma is a great impact on people with mental illness to receive treatment appropriately and can minimise their self-esteem as a result of causing social withdrawal. Family and relatives are also considerably stigmatised. Educational promotion is one of critical ways to promote mental health, to increase more public awareness and knowledge of mental illness in our society. It could be suggested that training for journalists could be essential, in order to avoid using of sensational or negative descriptive language on news coverage of mental illness that could reduce stigma. We believe that the more people know and receive information accurate on media coverage of mental illness, the less people can form stigma in our society.

Xiao, Jingyi, and 肖静怡. "Assessing trends and seasonality of tuberculosis in Hong Kong, 2001 to 2012." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206980.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health problem. Globally, the incidence and mortality of TB were 122 and 18 per 100 000 population in 2012, while TB notification and death rate were 67.9 and 2.8 per 100 000 population in Hong Kong. With improvement in diagnosis and case finding, the TB incidence, prevalence and mortality rate were descending. Also, TB treatment success and detection rates were increasing. TB is still an infectious disease leading to considerable burden in Hong Kong. Many studies have found seasonal pattern of TB in other countries or cities. However, the reason of seasonality of tuberculosis is still remain unknown. This dissertation assessed yearly trends and seasonal variability of tuberculosis and the potential impact of meteorological variables on seasonality of TB in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012. The finding could help us to better understand the pattern and the factors associated with seasonality of TB, and to inform future TB research and health policy strategies for TB control. Method Firstly, we did a literature review of seasonality of TB. Then we assessed the disease burden, trends and seasonality of TB. The data of TB age-specific and sex-specific notifications and notification rate, TB disease form-specific notifications and meteorological observations are mainly aggregated sources downloaded from public websites. Descriptive analysis methods were used to assess the characteristics of disease burden of TB and analytical analysis methods were used to assess the trends of TB age-specific, sex-specific notification rates and disease form-specific TB notifications in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012. We assessed the seasonality of TB in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012 with a Serfling model. Lastly, we used linear regression model to assess the potential impact of the meteorological predictors on the seasonality. Results The mean TB notification rate and death rate were 83.4 and 3.6 per 100, 000 population respectively in 2001 -2012. The overall trends of TB notification rate and death rate are descending in Hong Kong for the period. The disease burden of TB was much higher but decline faster for men than that for female. For age-specific descending trends of disease burden of TB, the trends were faster as the age groups getting older. In most of the reviewed studies from 1971 to 2012,the peak of TB cases was mainly in spring and summer and trough in winter. The seasonal pattern of TB of some countries and cities had different characteristics stratified by factors such as gender, sex, latitude and disease form. Most of the studies suggested that vitamin D deficiency, indoor activities, meteorological observations and health care seeking behaviour are the main possible factors contributing to seasonality of TB. TB notifications in Hong Kong exhibited a peak in summer and trough in winter. Except duration of sunshine, all meteorological variables including temperature, humidity, and solar radiation were significantly associated with monthly TB notification rate. The final predictive model included predictors such as time, temperature and solar radiation. 1 deg. C increase in monthly mean temperature was associated with 0.12(with 95% CI of (0.084, 0.16)) per 100, 000 population increasing of TB monthly notification rate, while 1 MJ/m2increase in monthly global solar radiation was associated with 0.064(with 95% CI of (0.005, 0.12)) per 100, 000 population decreasing of TB monthly notification rate. By comparing different models, temperature seemed to explain the observed seasonal pattern, while solar radiation had a more independent effect. Conclusion The study showed a higher TB disease burden in male which increases with age. The peak season of TB transmission should be in winter. We suggest more effective TB control strategies focusing on target groups including children, elders and relapse cases. As a general measure, we may encourage outdoor activities and more exposure to sunlight. We also suggest further studies to explore the relationship between humidity and vitamin D deficiency and seasonality of TB.

Abstract:
Precious local character and distinct neighborhood network are intangible assets that are worth to be retained, revealed and inherited. This differentiates a place from others with its diversified and unique essence, but again links up its community members through a shared understanding and appreciation of their own cultural legacy. Wanchai is one noticeable example of embracing rich local heritage and strong social network which are, however, at stake under development projects in the pipeline across the region. It is not uncommon to see that different community-based conservation efforts have been put forth to retain local value and heritage in many countries. One example is the set-up of community museums which have their presence across the globe since 60's, serving to retain and revitalize the vanishing local skills, and reveal the local stories and knowledge through local community force. Two successful examples in U.S. and Taiwan will be referenced to as an understanding of the characteristics and achievements of a community museum model. In Wanchai, a similar community-involved museum model is seen i.e. the Wanchai Livelihood Place (WCLP) established by a local NGO and a group of enthusiastic residents. WCLP is characterised by its aims to preserve and reveal the cultural essence of Wanchai and involve wide local participation in all aspects, ranging from operation, management and decision-making of WCLP. To be specific, its relationship with the community is of great important to be studied which can help assess its role - as a community museum - in achieving the conservation end together with the Wanchai community. In this dissertation, by a thorough investigation of the case of WCLP, it is held with the objective to study and evaluate this bottom-up conservation museum model regarding its relationship with the community in terms of preserving, revealing and revitalizing local culture, stories, traditions and addressing local issues for the Wanchai community; as well as its contribution to the Wanchai community in terms of local involvement, identity building and sustainable community development. Furthermore, the opportunities and challenges of this community-oriented conservation model will be discussed. In a wider context, this will help serve as a reference for other similar examples in Hong Kong. Lastly, it is important to note that the discussion will focus on the period from the establishment of WCLP in 2007 to end of Feb 2012, during the time when it was named the Wanchai Livelihood Place and was very much based on community support. After then, since March 2012, WCLP has changed its name to Hong Kong House of Stories under the Hongkong Bank Foundation's sponsorship and also as a result of the preparation for the official launch of the “Viva Blue House” Revitalization Project in 2014. From then, its mission and depth of activities have been expanded. This is worth to be looked into as the challenges and opportunities encountered by WCLP regarding its future development.

Cheng, Wing Ming (Clement). "Liberal Studies in Hong Kong, 1992-2014 : a critical history." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/53345/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the history of two Liberal Studies curricula in Hong Kong: Advanced Supplementary Level Liberal Studies (ASL LS) and New Senior Secondary Liberal Studies (NSS LS), which were introduced under two successive academic structures. The former follows the English Britain academic structure, with five-year junior and senior secondary, two further secondary years for matriculation, and a three-year undergraduate higher education. The latter resembles the Chinese academic structure with three years' junior secondary, three years' senior secondary and four year of undergraduate higher education. ASL LS formed part of the matriculation education curriculum and lasted for two years under the old academic structure; NSS LS is a component of a three-year senior secondary education under the new academic structure. The shift of academic structures in Hong Kong took place between 2009 and 2012, during which transition period both academic structures existed in parallel. This research has two main purposes. The first is to examine the history of the two Liberal Studies curricula. The second is to find out the key factors shaping the two curricula. The results and findings are mainly based mainly on documentary analysis supplemented by interviews with men and women who played significant parts in shaping the Liberal Studies curriculum. This historical research identifies three key overlapping stages in the development of Liberal Studies. The first stage relates to the formation and implementation of the ASL LS from 1992 to 2012. The second stage, beginning in September 2001, covers the consultation over and implementation (up to August 2014) of NSS LS. The third and comparatively short stage covers September to December 2014. This was initiated by the 79 day 'Occupy Central' and the 'Umbrella' movements in support of universal suffrage for the Legislative Council Election in 2016 and Chief Executive Election in 2017. While the predominant view in the academic literature locates the origins of Liberal Studies in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984, Legislative Council records show that ideas about liberal studies began to emerge as early as 1978. Factors shaping the Liberal Studies curriculum are also identified at international, regional and local levels. The Liberal Studies curricula is seen as resulting from the interplay of factors at all three levels, with local level factors played the decisive role.

Abstract:
Since the Anti-Extradition Law Social Movement in 2019, Hong Kong has entered an era of socio-political instability. The conflict between student protestants and the government has become increasingly intense, whereas several universities even became the battlefield of the protest and were abruptly shut down in November 2019. To add fuel to the fire, the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 has prompted all universities in the territory to suspend all face-to-face classes and activities for two semesters. All these have impacted university students in Hong Kong socially, academically and psychologically. In light of this, this study aims to explore the ways to which the learning experience of university students in Hong Kong have been impacted by the socio-political challenges. Through conducting a mixed-methods study at a public university in Hong Kong, it was found that university have a high perceived level of stress, high political involvements, unsatisfactory learning experience and poor learning motivation under this socio-political instability. It is hoped that this study can provide informed insights for teachers to understand students’ burdens, stresses, and emotional instability associated with socio-political unrest.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to classify the countries according to their tourism indicators via different cluster analysis methods and compare the findings. Using classical cluster analysis and fuzzy clustering together will be more appropriate to determine the World tourism structure. In this way the findings can be interpreted more detailed and comparatively. Data obtained from website of Worldbank (3 basic international tourism statistics of 159 countries for the year 2010) and findings are gained using NCSS (statistical software) 2007. According to the findings of fuzzy clustering method, Turkey belogs to a cluster which contains ABD, United Kingdom, China, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Hong Kong, Russian Federation, and Ukraine. According to the findings of classical clustering method (k means), Turkey is in the same cluster with same countries except Hong Kong. Also the findings of two techniques are similar about Turkey. Such a result can be expected correspondingly grading the countries about international their tourism data in 2011. Different clustering methods findings are steady about Euroasian countries too. Except Russian Federation and Ukraine all of the other Euroasian countries are located together in same cluster depending upon two different clustering methods. In conclusion two different clustering methods provide consistent (similar) results about the classification of countries according their internatianol tourism statistics.

Kwan, Yee Wan. "EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CONSTRUCTIVIST LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS." In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2021end097.

Full text
Abstract:
Constructivist learning environments are a core instructional factor affecting students’ critical thinking (Mathews & Lowe, 2011). However, few classroom environment research have specifically investigated relationships between students’ perceptions of their learning environment and their critical thinking ability (e.g., Fraser, 2012), especially in the context of Chinese learners. Therefore this study would fill this research gap by investigating the relationships between constructivist learning environments and critical thinking ability among Hong Kong secondary school students. The study used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from a convenience sample of 967 students studying Liberal Studies or Integrated Humanities in Secondary Three (Grade 9) in Hong Kong. The respondents completed a self-administered questionnaire which included the Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES), Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level X, and demographic information on age and gender. The findings showed that students perceived their learning environment to be moderately constructivist in nature, and scored a moderate level of critical thinking ability. Both age and school banding differences were identified in which younger and students in schools with higher banding tended to perceive a higher degree of constructivist characteristics in their learning environment and they obtained higher critical thinking ability scores. Multiple regression analyses indicated that five of the seven independent variables were predictors of critical thinking ability. Shared Control was the strongest predictor and negatively associated with critical thinking ability. Personal Relevance, Critical Voice, and Uncertainty were positively while age was negatively related to critical thinking ability. The hypothesized model of seven demographic and CLES variables accounted for 10% of variance of critical thinking ability, suggesting a medium effect size. Findings of the study are discussed with reference to developing students’ critical thinking ability in classrooms.

Abstract:
Victoria University offers a Computer Science degree in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong program matches the one in Melbourne, but both the content coverage and the delivery model of the Hong Kong program are affected by expectations and demands of the Hong Kong government and students. The paper outlines challenges, legislative, cultural, quality, time and distance that shaped the program delivery model. It examines the social construction of the program curriculum, and identifies cultural factors that have had most impact in modifying the program. The paper regards distance education as an informing discipline and discusses the program delivery model in terms of the Informing Science Framework. It uses a Project subject to illustrate the model and rationale behind it, and comments on suitability of various multimedia components as program delivery vehicles. The paper concludes by considering the implications of the Hong Kong program experience on future directions in distance education.
