This dissertation investigates the moral issues related to the circulation of humanitarian campaign KONY 2012 on the Internet, which was created by the organization Invisible Children (IC) in 2012. This campaign has asked people to request international authorities for military support to the Uganda’s government so it can extinguish the actions of Joseph Kony, a leader of a movement responsible for the committal of many heinous crimes. This research is justified by the need to understand the cyber mediated communication and cultural phenomena, which put to the test modes of socialization and political organization, ethical standards and moral positions. Thus, this study is developed with observations and historical and sociological confrontations, seeking to understand the ambiguities and paradoxes of contemporary socialities. Based on methodological perspective indicated by Rüdiger (2011), this phenomenon is studied in two axes: movement and countermovement. The KONY 2012 movement consists in audiovisual productions and text comments that were important to the popularization of the cause. In its turn, the countermovement KONY 2012, in addition of severous audiovisual productions and text comments, also consists of actions that denied the campaign. To conduct the reflections about this subject, this study was guided by theoretical discussions about morals and morality in the postmodern world, based in Giddens (1991), Lipovestky (1994), Vattimo (1994) and Bauman (1997) perspectives. In this investigation, we realized that the movement and countermovement KONY 2012 showed that, despite the apparent unquestionability of the cause, the moral responsibility in the postmodern context remains complex and problematic. On the one hand, it records the possibility of free encounter with other worlds and ways; of the enjoyment of the free will, as an oscillatory experience between belonging and rootlessness in the society of generalized communication. On the other hand, the situation of morality in this context reveals the irresponsibility of subjects: the experimentation and the everyday spontaneous fruition, of the being and of the living on the basis of aesthetic sense, seem to be the best interests. Thus, we discuss that the said emancipatory technologies are not favorable when there is lack of awareness and moral responsibility.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This analysis seeks to understand the power of social media to create sustainable social movements. The 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle were one of the first internet-supported acts of protest and illustrate the power of the Internet and social media to bring together diverse coalitions of actors and maintain decentralized power structures. Next, the analysis studies the non-profit advocacy organization Invisible Children and the recent media explosion of their Kony 2012 campaign to make sense of how uses of the Internet have expanded since 1999. The Kony 2012 case illustrates the power of committed networks in disseminating information but also alludes to some of the new challenges social media presents. Ultimately, this analysis concludes that social media has simultaneously empowered and crippled social media, calling for an intentioned use of the Internet applications, strong leadership, and cultural framing to sustain mobilization.

Abstract:
Background/ Objectives: It can always be recognised that mass media is one of key sources of information to society. Moreover, it has a great power to affect our life. Printed media, for example, newspaper as one of media communications contains words and texts, which can also create a strong power to influence readers to receive information, including news coverage of mental illness. The objective of this study is to analyse our selected the terms of Schizophrenia, Psychosis and Psychotic Patients from our selected three local Chinese newspapers in Hong Kong, to see the frequency and the trend of reporting incidents on news stories, and the use of language/words to portray people with mental illness on press coverage. Research questions were about 1) the change of frequency using the term of Schizophrenia, and under the same question the hypothesis was to see if using the term of Psychosis was more than Schizophrenia; 2) reviewed the term of Schizophrenia to see our selected three local newspapers whether or not choosing the term of Schizophrenia on news coverage more than Psychosis; 3) assessed both terms of Schizophrenia and Psychosis regarding incidents in all articles, the former was related to negative stories and the latter was related to good news coverage. 4) We reviewed the trend of using all keywords akin to metaphorical (words) usage in all articles. At last, 5) we also assessed all keywords in regard to the trend of using of stereotyping wordings in all papers in our selected years. Method: We assessed the database of retrospective newspaper via WiseNews of electronic resource at the University of Hong Kong, to retrieve the total of 1884 articles, from chosen newspapers, for example, Apple Daily, Ming Pao Daily News and Tai Kung Pao Daily News. We retrieved those newspapers in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2012 for our research study. Results: It is good to see that, since 2001 renaming in Psychosis (思覺失調), the term has been widely accepted in the public and has already been used on news coverage. In comparison with both terms of Schizophrenia (精神分裂 [症]) and Psychosis (思覺失調), we noticed that the frequency of using the name of Schizophrenia on printed media has, however, still remained higher than the term of psychosis to portray people with mental illness in all news papers [Schizophrenia – 40.2% 757/1884 /Psychosis – 24.9% 469/1884]. And we also noted that the term of Psychotic Patients was strong association with people in Schizophrenia to appear on same news coverage, according to our research findings. Meanwhile, it can be seen that using Psychosis (renaming in Chinese) on news coverage was increased gradually from 2002 – 2012, whereas using Schizophrenia was a lead in association with criminal cases, with 35/132 of unfavourable events. On the one hand, it can be noted that the trend of metaphorical usage was increased gradually from 2002 – 2012, and in all newspapers the more frequency of using metaphorical words/usage was to insult/cite someone with 46.2% (175/379 articles). On the other hand, it is not surprising to see that the more frequency of using stereotyping words was “Dangerous” or “Violence” to portray people with mental illness in all newspapers, which was highest record with 61.8% (202/327 counted articles) Conclusion: Mass media is generally recognised as key source of information to society, including media coverage of mental illness. Moreover, press media has a great power to influence us. In content analysis of our selected articles, it can be noted that in 2002 –2012, using the term of Schizophrenia was more than using Psychosis in our selected three local Chinese newspapers. It was revealed that the trend of using metaphorical (words) usage in all papers was increased gradually and the more frequency using of both terms was to insult/cite someone. It can be no doubt that inappropriate words and negative descriptive languages to portray people with mental illness on news coverage could influence people’s perception with negative towards psychotic patients. Stigma is a great impact on people with mental illness to receive treatment appropriately and can minimise their self-esteem as a result of causing social withdrawal. Family and relatives are also considerably stigmatised. Educational promotion is one of critical ways to promote mental health, to increase more public awareness and knowledge of mental illness in our society. It could be suggested that training for journalists could be essential, in order to avoid using of sensational or negative descriptive language on news coverage of mental illness that could reduce stigma. We believe that the more people know and receive information accurate on media coverage of mental illness, the less people can form stigma in our society.

Xiao, Jingyi, and 肖静怡. "Assessing trends and seasonality of tuberculosis in Hong Kong, 2001 to 2012." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206980.

Abstract:
Introduction Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health problem. Globally, the incidence and mortality of TB were 122 and 18 per 100 000 population in 2012, while TB notification and death rate were 67.9 and 2.8 per 100 000 population in Hong Kong. With improvement in diagnosis and case finding, the TB incidence, prevalence and mortality rate were descending. Also, TB treatment success and detection rates were increasing. TB is still an infectious disease leading to considerable burden in Hong Kong. Many studies have found seasonal pattern of TB in other countries or cities. However, the reason of seasonality of tuberculosis is still remain unknown. This dissertation assessed yearly trends and seasonal variability of tuberculosis and the potential impact of meteorological variables on seasonality of TB in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012. The finding could help us to better understand the pattern and the factors associated with seasonality of TB, and to inform future TB research and health policy strategies for TB control. Method Firstly, we did a literature review of seasonality of TB. Then we assessed the disease burden, trends and seasonality of TB. The data of TB age-specific and sex-specific notifications and notification rate, TB disease form-specific notifications and meteorological observations are mainly aggregated sources downloaded from public websites. Descriptive analysis methods were used to assess the characteristics of disease burden of TB and analytical analysis methods were used to assess the trends of TB age-specific, sex-specific notification rates and disease form-specific TB notifications in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012. We assessed the seasonality of TB in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2012 with a Serfling model. Lastly, we used linear regression model to assess the potential impact of the meteorological predictors on the seasonality. Results The mean TB notification rate and death rate were 83.4 and 3.6 per 100, 000 population respectively in 2001 -2012. The overall trends of TB notification rate and death rate are descending in Hong Kong for the period. The disease burden of TB was much higher but decline faster for men than that for female. For age-specific descending trends of disease burden of TB, the trends were faster as the age groups getting older. In most of the reviewed studies from 1971 to 2012,the peak of TB cases was mainly in spring and summer and trough in winter. The seasonal pattern of TB of some countries and cities had different characteristics stratified by factors such as gender, sex, latitude and disease form. Most of the studies suggested that vitamin D deficiency, indoor activities, meteorological observations and health care seeking behaviour are the main possible factors contributing to seasonality of TB. TB notifications in Hong Kong exhibited a peak in summer and trough in winter. Except duration of sunshine, all meteorological variables including temperature, humidity, and solar radiation were significantly associated with monthly TB notification rate. The final predictive model included predictors such as time, temperature and solar radiation. 1 deg. C increase in monthly mean temperature was associated with 0.12(with 95% CI of (0.084, 0.16)) per 100, 000 population increasing of TB monthly notification rate, while 1 MJ/m2increase in monthly global solar radiation was associated with 0.064(with 95% CI of (0.005, 0.12)) per 100, 000 population decreasing of TB monthly notification rate. By comparing different models, temperature seemed to explain the observed seasonal pattern, while solar radiation had a more independent effect. Conclusion The study showed a higher TB disease burden in male which increases with age. The peak season of TB transmission should be in winter. We suggest more effective TB control strategies focusing on target groups including children, elders and relapse cases. As a general measure, we may encourage outdoor activities and more exposure to sunlight. We also suggest further studies to explore the relationship between humidity and vitamin D deficiency and seasonality of TB.

Abstract:
Precious local character and distinct neighborhood network are intangible assets that are worth to be retained, revealed and inherited. This differentiates a place from others with its diversified and unique essence, but again links up its community members through a shared understanding and appreciation of their own cultural legacy. Wanchai is one noticeable example of embracing rich local heritage and strong social network which are, however, at stake under development projects in the pipeline across the region. It is not uncommon to see that different community-based conservation efforts have been put forth to retain local value and heritage in many countries. One example is the set-up of community museums which have their presence across the globe since 60's, serving to retain and revitalize the vanishing local skills, and reveal the local stories and knowledge through local community force. Two successful examples in U.S. and Taiwan will be referenced to as an understanding of the characteristics and achievements of a community museum model. In Wanchai, a similar community-involved museum model is seen i.e. the Wanchai Livelihood Place (WCLP) established by a local NGO and a group of enthusiastic residents. WCLP is characterised by its aims to preserve and reveal the cultural essence of Wanchai and involve wide local participation in all aspects, ranging from operation, management and decision-making of WCLP. To be specific, its relationship with the community is of great important to be studied which can help assess its role - as a community museum - in achieving the conservation end together with the Wanchai community. In this dissertation, by a thorough investigation of the case of WCLP, it is held with the objective to study and evaluate this bottom-up conservation museum model regarding its relationship with the community in terms of preserving, revealing and revitalizing local culture, stories, traditions and addressing local issues for the Wanchai community; as well as its contribution to the Wanchai community in terms of local involvement, identity building and sustainable community development. Furthermore, the opportunities and challenges of this community-oriented conservation model will be discussed. In a wider context, this will help serve as a reference for other similar examples in Hong Kong. Lastly, it is important to note that the discussion will focus on the period from the establishment of WCLP in 2007 to end of Feb 2012, during the time when it was named the Wanchai Livelihood Place and was very much based on community support. After then, since March 2012, WCLP has changed its name to Hong Kong House of Stories under the Hongkong Bank Foundation's sponsorship and also as a result of the preparation for the official launch of the “Viva Blue House” Revitalization Project in 2014. From then, its mission and depth of activities have been expanded. This is worth to be looked into as the challenges and opportunities encountered by WCLP regarding its future development.

Cheng, Wing Ming (Clement). "Liberal Studies in Hong Kong, 1992-2014 : a critical history." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/53345/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the history of two Liberal Studies curricula in Hong Kong: Advanced Supplementary Level Liberal Studies (ASL LS) and New Senior Secondary Liberal Studies (NSS LS), which were introduced under two successive academic structures. The former follows the English Britain academic structure, with five-year junior and senior secondary, two further secondary years for matriculation, and a three-year undergraduate higher education. The latter resembles the Chinese academic structure with three years' junior secondary, three years' senior secondary and four year of undergraduate higher education. ASL LS formed part of the matriculation education curriculum and lasted for two years under the old academic structure; NSS LS is a component of a three-year senior secondary education under the new academic structure. The shift of academic structures in Hong Kong took place between 2009 and 2012, during which transition period both academic structures existed in parallel. This research has two main purposes. The first is to examine the history of the two Liberal Studies curricula. The second is to find out the key factors shaping the two curricula. The results and findings are mainly based mainly on documentary analysis supplemented by interviews with men and women who played significant parts in shaping the Liberal Studies curriculum. This historical research identifies three key overlapping stages in the development of Liberal Studies. The first stage relates to the formation and implementation of the ASL LS from 1992 to 2012. The second stage, beginning in September 2001, covers the consultation over and implementation (up to August 2014) of NSS LS. The third and comparatively short stage covers September to December 2014. This was initiated by the 79 day 'Occupy Central' and the 'Umbrella' movements in support of universal suffrage for the Legislative Council Election in 2016 and Chief Executive Election in 2017. While the predominant view in the academic literature locates the origins of Liberal Studies in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984, Legislative Council records show that ideas about liberal studies began to emerge as early as 1978. Factors shaping the Liberal Studies curriculum are also identified at international, regional and local levels. The Liberal Studies curricula is seen as resulting from the interplay of factors at all three levels, with local level factors played the decisive role.

Abstract:
Sub-divided units (SDU) and the similar type of tiny accommodation namely cage home and cubicle apartment have been existed in Hong Kong for a long period of time. Despite the factthat the living condition of those flats is usually undesirable, there are views in the community that there is demand in the market because these flats can provide affordable urban accommodation to those who are not eligible for Public Rental Housing (PRH) or those who wish to live in the urban area which is closer to their workplaces or their children's place of study at a cheaper rent. The repeated fire incidents happened in the tenement buildings consisted of SDU causing number of casualties has widely aroused the public concern about the safety of SDU. Although the HK government has been implementing measures since 2011 to tackle the problems of SDU, the number of people living in SDU has still greatly increased from 53,000 in 2007 to 171,300 in 2013, accounting for 2.4% total population of Hong Kong. In fact, the increase of SDU not only reflects that many low-income group cannot afford the high housing rent, but also many households are being forced into inappropriate or sub-standard accommodation. J Pynoons, R Schafer, C Hartman (2012) stated that the quality and location of housing affect the security, happiness, and stability of families, and have serious implications for the economic and social wellbeing of our urban areas. The problems arising from SDUs not only affect the individual of tenants, but also impose hazard to the building management, fire safety, building structure and social order. Due to speculation and limited land supply, the problems of SDUs were still remained unsettled and the housing price has still been escalating to a higher recorded price causing shortage of adequate housing supply and thus the increase of rental price on housing. With rents escalating and Housing Authority waiting lists lengthening, low income households, particular the households who were not eligible to or awaiting for PRH were forced into inappropriate and sub-standard accommodation. Although the government has formed a long Term Housing Strategy (LTHS) Steering Committee to look into the housing problems of grassroots families, it would not see the proposed measures shall immediately solve the housing problems, particularly in relation to SDUs within a short period of time. All the proposed measures require number of years to plan, discuss and compromise with different parties. The goal of this dissertation is to review the phenomenon of SDU and to study the reasons of trend of such phenomenon. Without a thorough understanding on the phenomenon of SDU and the reasons of trend, no proper measures shall be implemented to tackle the problems of SDU. The phenomenon of SDU shall be deemed to be the result of number of reasons relating to land supply and housing demand. The ever rising housing price, the attitude and direction of property developers, the housing policy towards affordable housing and the high cost of living are the factors affecting the supply and demand of affordable housing whereas decreasing vacancy in the private rental market, lack of funding, lack of private development of affordable housing, increasing rent prices, lack of long-term affordable housing planning and the absence of a comprehensive housing policy cause the supply of affordable housing cannot meet the increasing demand. Besides, the attitude of people who worried that affordable housing will increase traffic, reduce their property values and lack of safety in their communities, no one wants to be near or to have additional affordable housing in their communities. These attitudes further make the government difficult to find suitable locations for affordable housing. Besides, various articles and news revealed that many people living in SDU are single parenthood, mental illness, disable and addiction to drugs and drink. However, there is no survey to reflect or indicate the real situation. Government should look into the real situation and to effect proper measures to tackle the problems of the above people.

Abstract:
Since the preservation campaigns at Lee Tung Street, the Star Ferry Pier and the Queen's Pier that erupted in early to mid-2000s, Hong Kong participatory art has undertaken an increasingly proactive role in local spatial movements, which marks the organizational and strategical evolvements of this artistic category that differentiate it from earlier public and community art. While research initiatives after 2010 have identified regional geospatial politics as one major concern for local participatory art today, existing studies tend to take a contextual approach with main emphases on why art becomes involved in urban spatial struggles while rarely proceeding to investigate what strategies or modes of spatial practices have emerged from relevant projects and what implications they have on the material-social spaces of the city. This hesitation to forward an interpretive evaluation of the focused phenomenon stems from the absence of epistemological concreteness in participatory art theories and criticisms, which necessitates the introduction of new analytical tools in research on the subject. To answer the pending questions, this research employs Henry Lefebvre's theories of the social production of space to examine three representative projects selected from a preliminary survey of local participatory art programs/groups which involve spatial practices. In exploring the contents, strategies, and socio-spatial implications of these cases, it presents three models of spatially oriented participatory art. On this basis, a cross-case analysis is conducted to explore how participatory art in general offers counterforces against the neoliberalist social-material and aesthetic reprogramming of the city while laying the social foundation for the anticipated production of differential spaces. As more urban renewal and land resumption plans are anticipated to storm through the city in the coming decades, this research hopes to provide for practitioners, researchers, and local communities the discursive and conceptual tools to understand the role of art in preceding and future spatial contestations

Abstract:
The study examines the influence of social media during the demonstrations in Hong Kong 2019-2020, focusing on how young political activists make use of social media, what their attitudes are towards the forums and whether the increased use shows some positive and/or negative effects. The study uses a qualitative method where the empirical material is obtained through semi-structured interviews. An interview guide was created and then nine interviews were conducted, eight of which were used in the study. The results are analyzed on the basis of an analytical framework developed from previous research and theories on how media is used. The study uses Jay G. Blumler, Michael Gurevitch and Elihu Katz’s theory Uses and Gratification, as well as Jan Van Dijk’s theory of network and information societies. The results show that the political activists mainly use social media for the sake of information, as a means of communicating mobilization strategies, updating each other on events, and for encouragement and motivation around the importance of the movement. They all have great respect for what they share on social media, but the attitude is partly that they must spread political messages in order to reach a global audience. The study also shows that the increased use of social media brings both negative and positive effects.

Abstract:
The thesis traces the successive urban responses made by the Hong Kong government from 1997 to 2014, in an attempt to achieve “imagined immunity” for the city. The urban responses being analysed are efforts to regulate the ways in which “live poultry” (especially live chickens) is metabolized and circulating in the city. The efforts are made to re-order the human-birds-microbes relationships in Hong Kong - a process conceptualized as “re-urbanization of nature.” The consequence of these re-urbanization of nature processes, led to changes in the specific practice of consuming “live poultry” in the city. Four periods of re-urbanization of nature are identified in the analysis, and it is argued that in each wave of restructuring there were markedly different frames constructed to generate distinctive meanings of the “contagion condition,” imagined urban immunity, and practices of re-urbanization of nature. Their meanings and resultant practices were products of negotiations, within an entangled web of human and nonhuman features in particular periods. The context of these interventions and the biopolitical contestations are analyzed in the thesis. It is then argued that such contingencies and context-sensitive processes, call for further studies of post-epidemic urban changes. The thesis also explores the possibility of developing a theoretical framework of “urban biopolitical immunology” to accomplish the inquiry. By so doing, it seeks to contribute to studies of the politics of contemporary epidemics, and to research on the production of urban nature.

Background: During the 2014 Hong Kong protests, with the growing concern of various perspectives in the international media, news coverage, as the main source of information transportation has become an issue of research interest. According to framing theory, for a certain event, media is likely to place it within a field of meaning. Furthermore, the message meaning, framed by media, influence audience’s information processing. Different media organizations might have different perspectives on framing same event. This study examined how Chinese news coverage and U.S. news coverage framed an event. Method: A quantitative content analysis was conducted among a sample of 152 news stories from China Daily and The New York Times. All the stories from August 17th 2014 to January 8th 2015 were analyzed to determine whether the 2014 Hong Kong protest was framed by China Daily and The New York Times differently. The code sheet was structured with key variables derived from former published articles. Furthermore, the categories of main issue and secondary issue came from pre-tests with another co-coder. Data analysis was conducted with frequency counts, cross tabulations and Pearson’s chi-square analysis in SPSS. Results: Findings suggested that news coverage of China Daily focused on the issues of politics and protest, as well as did the coverage of The New York Times. However they have significant differences on framing of history, profiles of protesters and others. The findings suggested that the China Daily and The New York Times have significant differences on overall bias in terms of Pro-change, Anti-change and Neutral. Conclusion: Samples in this study, as prosperous news organizations with the reputation and resources to conduct fair reporting and to set journalistic standards in China and the United States respectively, represented most perspectives in general. According to different factors of national interest, political ideology and history, Chinese news coverage and U.S. news coverage have significant differences on framing the issues and overall bias.

Abstract:
Social media is increasingly being used as a forum to engage in political events and using different kinds of social platforms has become an easier and faster way to conveying political messages to the outside world. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the social media platform YouTube is used as an instrument for a resistance movement and how the content in these videos are continuously changing by studying a specific case that takes place over a long period of time. Using a content analysis, this study analyzed visual materials in form of livestream videos on YouTube about the resistance movement in Hong Kong during June, July, September, and October 2019. The analyzed videos are strategically selected from a specific YouTube channel named China Uncensored, where the authors of the content give a very transparent visual of the resistance movement. To analyze the YouTube videos, a coding scheme was constructed with five starting point for respective video: the purpose, the target, the alliance, criticism types, and the level of violence for the resistance movement. In conclusion the use of YouTube as an instrument for a resistance movement in form of livestream videos has shown positive effects due to its realistic, unedited, and transparent visual of reality. This way the content has high validity, which makes YouTube livestream videos a great tool of resistance on social media. The study also answers the question regarding the changes in the livestream videos, that the goal and level of violence of the movement constantly changed during the selected timeline.

Abstract:
The influence of Hong Kong popular music, or Cantonese songs, has reached its peak in the 1980s. However, since late 1990s, along with the emergence of a series of historical events, such as the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997, the breakout of financial crisis, and China’s accession to WTO, Hong Kong’s music industry encountered many adverse situations, such as the sharp drop in record sales, and the stagnation of star creation mechanism. As a consequence, many people believed that Hong Kong popular music had “died”. This study investigates the development of Hong Kong popular music in Chinese mainland since 1992 with the research methods of text interpretation, audience analysis, and participant observation by placing Hong Kong popular music in the contexts of China’s official ideology, popular culture industry, mass media and new media. It points out that Hong Kong popular music has demonstrated complex features involving compromise and conflict, unity and split, repression and resistance, while participating in the construction of the identity of “Great China”, the propagation of urban modernity and the production of heterogeneous “noises”. To reveal the complexity of these features, this study analyzes the songs, performances and fans activities of four major Hong Kong popular music figures—— Andy Lau, Faye Wong, Eason Chan and Anthony Wong. During 1990s, when the official media was the mainstream propagation channel, Hong Kong singers could only realize their commercial interests by first participating in the construction of the identity of “Great China”. In Hong Kong’s handover ceremony, Andy Lau performed the song “Chinese People” and sang folk songs with Cantonese lyrics. These performances clearly show how the highly-mature Hong Kong idol industry flexibly used the localization strategy to win the mainland market. Faye Wong and her creative group demonstrate the advantages of the modern urban language: the globalized human resources, the diversified musical styles and the collaged post-modern images; they interprets what the concepts of “urbanity”, “modernity” and “personality” are. Since the new millennium, the popularity of Internet greatly shocks the dominance of official discourse, and the development of market economy brings tremendous opportunities for the public to appreciate, consume and evaluate Hong Kong popular music. Meanwhile, the fans culture has been gradually flourishing. During this period, Eason Chan, relying on a large number of non-love songs and superb live performances, obtains great business success, but keeps a distance away from the aesthetic attitude of “Great China”. Such self-consciousness is spread in the new media era when singers like “Anthony Wong” produce heterogeneous “noises” with cross-regional, cross-media, mainstream and independent styles. These styles are neither “mainland songs” nor individualism; they reveal the non-commercial facet of Hong Kong popular music. This study argues that it is inadequate to judge the rise and fall of Hong Kong popular music if only focusing on its commercial success. The hybridity of Hong Kong popular music should be discussed in specific social and cultural contexts. This study suggests that Hong Kong popular music is not only a leader of the modern urban culture, but also a main force of constructing “Chinese identity”. When the commercial myth disappears, the alternative side of Hong Kong popular music, characterized by questioning, reflection and criticism, becomes prominent. This kind of trend not only creates new connections for the independent music in mainland, but also provides a historic opportunity for the reconstruction of Hong Kong identity = 香港流行音樂,或稱粵語歌的影響力,曾在上世紀八十年代達到頂峰。

Abstract:
Especially for the last twenty years, the studies of Linguistic Landscapes (LLs) have been gaining the status as an autonomous linguistic discipline. The LL of a (mostly) geographically limited area – which consists of e.g. billboards, posters, shop signs, material for election campaigns, etc. – gives deep insights into the presence or absence of languages in that particular area. Thus, LL not only allows to conclude from the presence of a language to its dominance, but also from its absence to the oppression of minorities, above all in areas where minority languages should – demographically seen – be visible. The LLs of big cities are fruitful research areas due to the mass of linguistic data. The first part of this paper deals with the theoretical and practical research that has been conducted in LL studies so far. A summary of the theory, methodologies and different approaches is given. In the second part I apply the theoretical basis to my own case study. For this, the LLs of two shopping streets in different areas of Hong Kong were examined in 2010. It seems likely that the linguistic competence of English must be rather high in Hong Kong, due to the long-lasting influence of British culture and mentality and the official status of the language. The case study's results are based on empirical data showing the objectively visible presence of English in both examined areas, as well as on two surveys. Those were conducted both openly and anonymously. The surveys are a reinsurance measuring the level of linguistic competence of English in Hong Kong. That level was defined before by an analysis of the LL. Hence, this case study is a new approach to LL analysis which does not end with the description of its material composition (as have done most studies before), but which rather includes its creators by asking in what way people's actual linguistic competence is reflected in Hong Kong's LL.

Abstract:
This is an autoethnographic account of the performative practices in the Umbrella Movement (2014, Hong Kong), a struggle that I myself and some fellow artists participated in. Instead of making a discursive analysis of postcolonial identity, this thesis focuses on performative practices and the performativity of artists and their activist counterparts in the Umbrella Movement. This thesis starts with an overview of the political situation in Hong Kong before relating it to the social turn in contemporary art practice and the performative turn in art and research practices. Instead of using performance as a metaphor for understanding cultural phenomena, I persevere with the notion of performance per se, of artists taking part in activism and examining the performativity involved in the process. As an artist/researcher, I have been seeking a research methodology that is compatible with the means and ends of activism being studied and can nourish a reflexive account on the performative practices of resistance in postcolonial Hong Kong. I propose a methodology of 'performative autoethnography' which accentuates the co-performative and intersubjective process as well as the non-textual aspects of embodied experience and of performing struggle in activism. Reviewing the performative practices on macro- and micro-levels, I borrow the term 'microutopia' to depict the imaginary space created by micro-performances used to cope with the discrepancies between utopian ideals and reality. Specifically, I examine the transformative power of some performative tactics employed in the Umbrella Movement: parodic performance of 'over-identification,' improvisation accomplished by collective connectivity and kinetic responsiveness of the performers, and the artist as an intersubjective mediator. Among these tactics, there are recurring claims and recurring forms that add up to a repertoire of protest. Through microutopian interventions staged at the site of protest, the identities of the multitude are constructed through critical engagement. I suggest that we use the concept of 'critical identities' to study how identities are constructed within an open-ended network of social relations, using a critical reflexive lens of performance studies at a precarious moment in which Hong Kong finds itself at a crossroads.

Abstract:
Studies have shown that creative mathematically founded reasoning (CMR) outperforms algorithmic reasoning (AR) in regards to retention and (re)construction of knowledge. This suggests that creativity should be encouraged in national high-school mathematics curricula. The aim of the present study is to compare how creativity is framed in different national high-school mathematics curricula, using the following definition: creativity is the characteristics of people, processes, and environments which lead to new and original products that are useful or otherwise attractive to an individual or a society. Utilizing content and discourse analysis, the present study thus contrasts how the high-school mathematics curricula of Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, and Norway handle and value creativity, and also examines which role creativity takes in each curricula. Findings suggest that Singapore’s curriculum emphasizes creativity the most, and frequently does so in relation to assessment. Hong Kong’s curriculum is found to emphasize creativity in diverse ways, often using words with connotations to playfulness. Analysis of Sweden’s curriculum indicates a relatively minute focus on creativity, tending to put it in a teacher-centered context. A feature of Norway’s curriculum is an increasing emphasis on creativity as courses approach tertiary education. This also suggests a rising value of creativity in its curriculum. A similar though not as pronounced trajectory is found also in Singapore’s curriculum. In the Asian and Norwegian curricula, creativity is expressed both as a means and an end, while in Sweden’s curriculum it is only seen as an end. The results are discussed in terms of potential reasons for the prominent national features, and the study also includes an evaluation of the aptness of the suggested definition of creativity, a review of the limitations of the study, as well as propositions for further research. Finally, two recommendations are given to the National Agency for Education in Sweden – Skolverket – based on the results of the study: 1) diversify the emphasis on creativity in the curriculum, and 2) ensure alignment between what teachers value and what Skolverket values with respect to creativity.

Abstract:
In the last decade, social movements have demonstrated their power of bringing change to societies, often in terms of democratization. At the same time, the level of democracy in the world has been established as decreasing. It is therefore interesting to study whether the increase of social movements is related to the decline of democracy. The aim of this thesis was thus to explore the perception of democracy amongst activists in a social movement calling for democratization. This was done by conducting semi-structured interviews with activists of varying degrees of participation in the Hong Kong protests 2019 – 2020. The results of the study indicated that a majority of the activists regarded democracy from the perspective of liberal democracy, stressing the importance of elections and protection of human rights through a well-grounded constitution. Nevertheless, some of the respondents sought more than a fundamental description of democracy, incorporating elements of deliberation and participation as well. The Hong Kong protests 2019 – 2020 have not seen the end yet. Likewise, the existence of social movements will forever remain through variations of repertoires. The significance of what conception of democracy motivates activists to organise themselves through civil society movements remains to be academically covered in full. Thus, future studies of democratization should continue to shed light on the role of the civil society in democratization processes.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the stock performance of bidding firms in China mainland and Hong Kong around the announcement of mergers and acquisitions transaction. The sample consists of 19 bidding firms in mainland and 11 bidding firms in Hong Kong. Hang Seng Index and Shanghai Composite Index are two proxies for market returns. The result that both average abnormal return and cumulative abnormal return to bidders in China mainland are positive whereas AAR to bidders in Hong Kong is positive in the announced date and CAR is negative during the event window (-5, +5). Compare to two regions, the announcement of mergers and acquisitions in mainland regarded as ‘good news’ to its stock price; however, it is not as good as for Hong Kong market. In the total method of payment, there are 8 transactions by stock and up to 22 deals by cash; that above 70% of acquisitions are pure cash payments in the entire sample. Through the regression model, the author finds regions of acquisitions affect the return because it is tested statistical significant at 5 percent significance level. And methods of payment do not affect abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal return to bidding firms during the event period.

Abstract:
This master thesis seeks to demystify the diverse experiences of youth in New Caledonia and explores the manifestations of agency by a particular group of young Kanak as they take part in a “collective form of existence” (vivre ensemble) in New Caledonia. The group is composed of young men and women of Koné involved in associations governed by the law established on July 1st 1901 and whose activities primarily revolve around a house located in the Cigales neighbourhood and it’s household. The analysis reveals that youth experiences and practices cannot be reduced to the representations put forward by dominant discourses. These, in fact, wrongly portray young Kanak as being trapped in an unchanged and immobile ancestral culture, and focus primarily on their inadequacy in today’s world as well as on their problems. It is argued that young Kanak possess creative capacities, want to contribute to society and aspire, for most of all, to take an active and vocal part in it. This research further shows that their experiences and initiatives must be contextualised, meaning considered in relation to the contemporary “situation” (social, political and economic) brought by the Nouméa Accord of 1998 according to which these are shaped. Keywords: Kanak, New Caledonia, Youth, shared destiny, citizenship, everyday life, urban milieu, indigenous people.

Abstract:
Hong Kong is known for its specific political model composed by a hybrid system balancing democracy and authoritarianism. This work investigates the hegemonic nature of the interactions between the 2019’s democracy movement and the pro-Beijing actors and how they affected this systemic balance. Based on a case study, this essay mixes the hegemony, social movements and authoritarianism theories to carry out this research. The findings show a change of the systemic paradigm through the domination of the Chinese authoritarian system. This mainlandisation has occurred from a soft and hard power interactions between the two actors to reach a domestic hegemony. From a soft power lens, the collective action theory highlights a rising unbalance of power within the political and media institutions with the rising control of China, however, the movement through its ideas, capabilities and political opportunities formed a counter-hegemony. From a hard power lens, those interactions evolved in an escalation of symbolic and physical violence in terms of repertoires of actions and policing. This radicalization of the movement offered an opportunity to strengthen the control of China. This hybrid regime case shows that democracy movements have fueled an “authoritarianisation’ instead of a democratization.

Abstract:
Earlier research shows that news media use violence and conflict to frame demonstrations. A protests news coverage is often negative and portrayed in such a way that impedes the background and message of a demonstration. Demonstrations usually seek media attention to spread their message to a bigger audience. What the media choose to present can have a big impact on how a demonstration is perceived and the outcome of it. Negative news coverage can make a demonstration appear unnecessary and can lead to a loss of power and status in the society.    The purpose of this study is to examine how the protests in Hong Kong 2019 were framed in Swedish news media and if the news coverage follows the protest paradigm. The framing theory, the protest paradigm and news value theory are the theories applied in this study. The method used was a qualitative textual analysis and one article from Dagens Nyheter and one article from Göteborgs-Posten were analyzed.    The results in our study show that the articles, in some way, correlate with the protest paradigm. Violence and conflict occur frequently in both Dagens Nyheter and Göteborgs-Posten’s news coverage of the protests in Hongkong, especially in the beginning of the articles. However, the results also go against the protest paradigm in multiple ways. The newspapers do write about the protesters purpose, goals and background, as well as the police violence.

The Lin family murders that took place on Feb. 28, 1980 shocked the entire Taiwanese society. In broad day light and under 24-hour surveillance by the KMT government’s secret agents, the Lin residence was intruded and the four people in the house at the time were brutally stabbed. Three of them died and the last one was critically injured. This occurred right at the time when the people allegedly involved in the Formosa Incident were on trial. The ruthless murders happening at such a crucial moment put Taiwan to an immense ordeal on its way to democracy. The Taiwan Presbyterian Church, a religious group deeply concerned about Taiwan’s political future, has released three important declarations since the 1970s. As a church established by missionaries from overseas, one of its religious spirits is to stand by theunderprivileged. When the Lin Family encountered such an excruciating suffering, the Presbyterian Church took no heed of the political pressure at the time and extended a caring hand. It purchased the residence and set up the Gikong Church, transforming the venue of ferocious killings into a gospel hall where love, forgiveness and hope would be disseminated. When Gikong Church was first established, besides spreading the gospel of Jesus, a very important task was to care for political victims, including paying visits to such prisoners in jail, performing family worship in the homes of different political victims, etc. Even before Cheng Nan-jung martyred himself, Gikong Church had on several occasions cited the Bible to encourage him to cherish his life for Taiwanese democracy. After the marshal law was lifted in 1987, the political atmosphere gradually changed, many restrictions were removed one after another, and social momentum was released. In particular, after the Democratic Progressive Party was organized, Gikong Church realized that it had to adjust the focus of its work to play a more active role in caring for the people in the neighborhood andconcentrate on preaching in the community. During the tenure of the third pastor Hsu Chengdao, Gikong Church made the effort to make the space of the church accessible to the residents in the neighborhood, turning the church into a public space like a “temple square.” In consequence, the church became an opinion leader of the neighborhood and started to guide the development of the neighborhood. Human rights and environmental care are also the focuses of the church. In recent years, the church has attended the meetings of Group 1 of Amnesty International Taiwan, provided assistance to Tong Kwang Lighthouse Presbyterian Church, fought for the rights of workers from shut-down plants, joined the Taiwanese delegation for promotion of Taiwan’s United Nations bid, and participated in the anti-nuclear movement. The members of Gikong Church have spared no effort when taking part in these actions. As a result of the endeavors of Gikong Church in upholding social justice and doing charity work, many democracy and social moment activists have been attracted to meet at the church and this has made Gikong Church stand out among the many Presbyterian churches in Taiwan as one rather politically associated.

Background
The evidence for anthropogenic climate change has been mounting and this has focused attention on issues related to climate, weather, and health. Short-term weather variations have been found to be associated with multiple health outcomes, including infectious diseases. Previous epidemiological studies have investigated the quantitative associations between meteorological parameters and different types of infectious enteric diseases and revealed varying study location-based results and implications. The present study aims to address the potential associations of weather variables with infections induced by enteric bacteria and viruses in Hong Kong and explore the possible effect modification by season, age, and gender.
Methods
Daily counts of public hospital admissions of Salmonella, norovirus and rotavirus infection and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) from January 1st, 2002 through December 31st, 2011 were obtained from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. The daily meteorological variables during the same period including maximum temperature, mean temperature, minimum temperature, mean dew point temperature, mean relative humidity, mean atmospheric pressure, total rainfall, mean wind speed and total solar radiation were retrieved from the Hong Kong Observatory. Generalized additive models, taking autoregression into account, were constructed for time-series analysis, adjusting for time trend, seasonality, day of the week and public holiday. The possible lagged effects of meteorological parameters were evaluated using distributed lag non-linear models.
Results
Independent associations between meteorological parameters and infections were discribed in this study. Higher mean temperature was associated with more Salmonella hospitalizations and fewer rotavirus hospitalizations, with a cumulative interquartile
Daily air temperature fluctuation and other short-term meteorological variations could be employed as early indicators for potential upsurge of Salmonella, norovirus and rotavirus infection and HFMD in Hong Kong. Better public awareness and government

Hong Kong, as a British colonial for 155 years, was finally returned to the Chinese Government in 1997. However, issues about the national identity of Hong Kong residents are still the main concern of Hong Kong society and the Chinese Government. There are various aspects such as political, economical, social, cultural, etc, in the history of the development of Hong Kong that are affecting the national identity recognition of Hong Kong residents. Before the 1960s, a majority of Hong Kong residents recognized themselves as “Chinese people,” due to cultural and historical reasons. After the Second World War, a flood of immigrant came to Hong Kong and babies from the first batch of baby boom were born after 1960s. Since then, different opinions on the recognition of the national identity started flourishing. Generally speaking, the recognition of “Hong Kong people” began in the 1970s. Many events and factors influenced the national identification of Hong Kong residents, including the Leftists Riots in 1967, Localization Movement promoted by the British Hong Kong Government in the 1980s, developmental experience of the prosperous economy, social events and the political environment in Hong Kong which have been intervened by the Chinese Government since the handover in 1997. Nevertheless, Taiwan, which shared similar history with Hong Kong, was ceded by the Chinese Government and was colonized by foreign powers. As the sovereignty of Hong Kong had already returned to China, Hong Kong has been deeply influenced by the Chinese Government politically and economically. For Hong Kong residents, who are pursuing open political environment, economic freedom and democratic society, are not satisfied with the policy made by the Hong Kong Government. The current social movements in Hong Kong have shown signs on following steps of Taiwan. Thus, the change of society, political and economic situation in Taiwan and Hong Kong are worth our observation in the future.

Hong Kong has been appreciated to the worlds for her abundance and splendor from fabulous movies to fantastic gourmet. Therefore,I have been very surprised to spot Hong Kong Hakka since my first visit in 2006 because of my consistent interest and efforts to revive Hakka culture,.Consequently,I have investigated and recorded languages and cultural activities in Hong Kong since August,2016.Hakka language used to be thriving in Sha Tin,Yuen Long,Fanling and Sai Kung(namely New Territories) but it began to decay immensely right after 1970s' British ruling for adopting English and Cantonese as official languages .However, situations has been changing ever after transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997.With more and more mandarin using in daily life,Hong Kong people are considering localism and indigenousness to urge protecting native languages and preserving cultures , which were intensified by the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage treaty adopted by the UNESCO in 2003.Hong Kong also followed on the treaty in 2004 to preserve the heritages. In 2016's legislature bureau election, some candidates took Hakka language and identity as the appeals. In my thesis, mainly I focus my research on language and cultural revival of Hong Kong Hakka from 2007 to 2017. By interviewing some key people to comprehend context and clarify further plurality of localism.Hakka people in Taiwan have been striving for three decades since Returning My Mother Tongue protest in 1988. I am also looking forward to offering some suggestions to mutual exchange for Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Abstract:
The subject of this master thesis is the current development of the Hong Kong's news media in the period of 2005-2010 which is scrutinized through the prism of recent political and social changes of the region. The main object of this master thesis is to create a descriptive analysis of Hong Kong's mass media in the abovementioned period. This master thesis splits into three parts. First part is theoretical and examines the key media theories dealing with the concept of media systems. Furthermore, it uses the media theories to identify the Hong Kong's media system and embed it into the appropriate theoretical context. The second part presents the historical development of Hong Kong's press system and names Hong Kong's main newspapers of the last century. Third part, the main part of this master thesis, scrutinizes the development of the Hong Kong's media system after the political transition from the British to the Chinese "rule". Here, the main attention is paid to the current newspapers, broadcast stations and to the new trends in the Hong Kong's media environment. Finally, this master thesis evaluates whether the political pressure from China affects the Hong Kong's freedom of press and whether local journalists use methods of the self-censorship.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine how colonial constructs on Chinese culture affects people's views toward sexual minorities in Hong Kong. In the first Chapter, I explain the shift of my research focus after I started my research. I also conduct a brief literature review on existing literature on sexual minorities in mainland China and Hong Kong. In the second Chapter, I examine interviewees' accounts of family pressure and perceived conflicts between their religious beliefs and sexual orientation. I analyze interviewees' perceptions of social attitudes toward sexual minorities. Hidden in these narratives is an internalized colonial construct of Chinese culture in Hong Kong. This construct prevented some interviewees from connecting Christianity with oppression toward sexual minorities in Hong Kong. In the third Chapter, I examine the rise of right-wing Christian activism in pre- and post- handover Hong Kong. I also analyze how sexual-minority movement organizations and right-wing Christians organized in response to the political situation in Hong Kong. Then, I present the result of content analysis on debates around two amendments to the Domestic Violence Ordinance (DVO)-the first legislation related to sexual minorities in Hong Kong after handover. I draw on data from online news archives and meeting minutes and submissions of the Legislative Council (LegCo). Based on the rhetoric of US right-wing Christians' "(nuclear) family values," Hong Kong right-wing Christians supported excluding same-sex cohabiting partners from the DVO. This rhetoric carved out a space for different narratives about "Chinese culture" and "Chinese family." These different versions of Chinese culture matched diasporic sentiment toward the motherland and gained currency from post-handover political landscape and power configuration in Hong Kong. These versions also revealed the colonized and diasporic mindset of opponents of the amendments; these mindsets also reflect the same internalized colonial construct of "Chineseness" my interviewees have. Based on analyses of interview data in Chapter II and in Chapter III of how people view sexual minorities, I argue that a colonial diasporic psyche aptly captures people's views toward sexual minorities in Hong Kong. Since the political situation and DVO are specific to Hong Kong, I do not include interviewees who are not of Hong Kong origin in this thesis.

With increasing tensions between the people of Hong Kong and the government of PRC, the terms Hong Kongese and Hong Konger have gained traction in recent years as a means of cementing an identity different than their counterparts living in the PRC. However, while these terms have grown in usage in Hong Kong, this usage may not necessarily echo throughout the Hong Kong diaspora. As a result, this work focuses on examining the Hong Kong diaspora in the United States and their views on their identity as individuals from Hong Kong, in particular, those who emigrated between 2008 and 2018 and now reside in the Greater Boston area. In addition, this study aims to examine various socio-political factors may have influenced their identity, and in turn, in what ways does the role of the “Hong Kongese/Hong Konger” factor into the Hong Kong Independence Movement, and whether said identity brings any consequences. In this paper, the author’s objective is to address three main questions: 1) How do recent Hong Kong immigrants in the Greater Boston area identify (Hong Kongese/Hong Konger, Hong Kong-Chinese, or Chinese), especially with the recent events that have taken place within the last decade? 2) What factors do they believe, have influenced their decision on their identity? 3) What influence does the existence of a “Hong Kongese/Hong Konger” identity play into the Hong Kong Independence Movement, if any? If so, how does the Hong Kong diaspora in the Greater Boston area view this? This study will also be examining the respondents’ answers using Horse’s Model for Native American Identity Development as well as Durkheim’s collective représentations and collective effervescence to better understand how and why the participants came to identify the way they do, and in part, how that may affect the overall identity of the Hong Kong diaspora in the Greater Boston area.

Social movement is not only a repertoire of contention broke out in a physical space, but also a dynamic process to produce the space - abstract, relative, and relational – for contentious politics. This thesis explores how the social movement spaces and the identities of resistance in Hong Kong were socially produced after 2009. Four relevant movements in Hong Kong were included in the study, including Anti-Express Rail Link, Anti-Moral and National Education, Anti-North East New Territories New Development Areas, and the Umbrella Movement. Analyzing the production process of “Civic Square” and the Mongkok Occupied Area, the resistance practices of actionists, the discourses adopted in the framing process, and the co-implication of the multiple spatialities of movements, researcher claims that the social movement spaces and identities of resistance are historically intertwined, shaping by the struggle between different spatialities strategies of localness and the legitimation and de-legitimation process of the identities of resistance. “Post 80s” was constructed as identities of resistance through the Anti-Express Rail Link Movement. They produced specific cultural meaning through the spatial practice of “cultural resistance”, adopted the “place-scale” spatialities strategies of localness, and produced local discourses by social practices; On the other hand, “Nativist” was produced in the Umbrella Movement, accompanied by its spatial practice of “valiant (yongwu) resistance”, adopted the “border-territory” spatialities strategies of localness, and its local discourses by social exclusion. The formation process of “Nativist” and their struggle with “Post-80s” on their spatialities strategy of localness facilitate the de-legitimation of Post-80s.
