Globalization is one of several factors that are responsible for the growth of global brands in our countries, including Indonesia. With the knowledge of global brands such as Starbucks, McDonalds, and KFC, the society is driven to consume them to feel modernized. It is usually believed that the popularity of global brands could lead to a decreasing growth of the local brands. By conducting different methods, such as in-depth interviews, collecting second-hand archives and questionnaires, this research seeks to investigate whether in modern Yogyakarta, whether the society prefer to go to Starbucks as the global franchised brand, or Angkringan Kopi Joss as the famous traditional brand. And the result shows us a very differnt conclusion to us. According to different respondants, the global brand of cafés is not really more popular than traditional cafés. In contrast, the local people are keen to visit traditional cafés around the place in their everyday lives. The reasons why local people prefer to go to local café rather than Starbucks are various, including cheap prices, ambience and the social functions. And the consumers’ preference of going to a modern cofee house or a traditional one reminds us to rethink the over-emphasied superiority of globalization, as well as the value of so-called local and traditional knowledge and places.
