Trafficking women for sexual abuse has been a serious concern worldwide, particularly over the last two decades. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that illicit profits of human trafficking may be as high as $32 billion. However, the international media community has scarcely focused on North Korean women defectors and victims of human trafficking, despite the severity of the issue. More than two million North Koreans, predominantly women, have crossed borders to enter China from starvation. Among those women migrants, about 80% to 90% of them were abducted by traffickers at the border between North Korea and China, and the traffickers sold them to the Chinese sex industry or Chinese men who are unable to find a woman as a wife or a sex slave.This cross-cultural textual analysis examined South Korean and Western (U.S. and British) newspaper coverage of North Korean women as victims of human trafficking to discover similarities and differences in those countries’ news frames. The analysis has shown that politics was a crucial factor in the coverage of the issue. However, by generally failing to report on the fundamental causes of the trafficking, such as inequality between genders, both Western and South Korean newspapers perpetuated hegemonic masculinity and failed to inform and educate people about the grave situations of North Korean women defectors and victims of human trafficking. This study recommends that in reporting the trafficking issues, journalists must be able to observe objectively, not within ideologies or frames provided by politicians.

Kim Kirim was the most prominent figure ~n the Korean literary world during the 1930s. He was a poet and critic, well versed in major western literary theories and poems of that time, and a pioneer in employing the techniques of western Modernism in literature. Kim believed the Modernism of western poetry could be very useful to reinvigorate the Korean poetry of the time. This study compares several important concepts of modern western poetics and poetry, as understood by Kim Kirim, with those of the western poets and critics who originally created and employed these new concepts. Kim's poetics are analyzed in detail to trace his theoretical understanding of western literary criticism and to show how he used them in building theories of modern Korean poetry. Several of his "misconceptions" exist unquestioned even at present and are strongly influencing modern Korean poetry. It is therefore essential in understanding the present state of Korean poetry that one begin with a study of Kim Kirim, since he contributed so much to providing new models for Korean poetry. This· work begins with a discussion of the nature of Korean poetry before the influence of Modernism. A discussion of elements of new poetics in Korea as introduced by Kim with special attention to areas of possible misinterpretation, leads the way to analysis indetail of "Kisangdo", Kim's most famous work, in relation to Eliot's poem "The Waste Land". Poetic concepts of unity, rhythm, and objectivity in modern poetry are the final areas of focus due to the importance that both Kim and the western Modernists placed on them

Little is known about Korean older migrants and their lives in New Zealand. They are likely to be ‘invisible’ in the community and wider society. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the issue of elder mistreatment and filial piety among Korean immigrant families in New Zealand. The study was designed with a mixed methodological approach that utilised both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Data were collected from three sources: key informant interviews with 20 key informants, a structured survey with 50 older people, and in-depth interviews with 10 abused persons. Data were analysed by employing a two-fold analytical approach. In the primary analysis, concept mapping and SPSS analysis were respectively used to analyse the data collected from qualitative and quantitative studies. Major points of the findings emerged from the secondary analysis in which all data were evaluated by utilising the concept mapping method in an integrated way.
Elder mistreatment occurred among Korean older migrants who arrived in New Zealand during their old age. The findings of the study have shown how older people manage their experiences of elder abuse and neglect in the new country. Psychological and emotional effects of elder mistreatment have been highlighted in relation to ‘Hwa-byung’, a culture-bound anger syndrome among victims. The concept of ‘anomic abuse’ has been developed based on the experiences and perceptions of older people who faced difficulties with their offspring because of changes in cultural norms and regulations. The concept of ‘filiality’ is presented as an alternative term to ‘filial piety’ reflecting the emphasis on filial love and emotional closeness between generations in the care of older people. The study has provided a filial justice approach to working with older people as a framework to tackle the problem of elder mistreatment in domestic settings in order to promote the human rights, well-being and health of older people.Thesis available in print.

Central to the work is the concept of body energy, or Ki. This ancient Eastern term is translated into a contemporary practice that enables a performer to engage mental and physical training. Breath and the use of breath in performing are the principal means of achieving this level of engagement.

Isang Yun employed several contrasting methods to achieve the combination of two different musical worlds, Eastern and Western, in his Tänzerische Fantasie für Großes Orchester, Muak. In presenting Eastern elements, he adopts Taoism as his musical philosophy, describes the Korean traditional dance motion Chun-Aeng-Mu (Dance of the Oriole), and applies Korean traditional performance practice in the use of Western instruments. Showing the influence of aspects of Western music, he employs a musical form similar to that of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, evokes Igor Stravinsky’s rhythmic mood and tension from Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), and even uses his own compositional technique Hauptklangtechnik within the format of Western orchestration. In its analysis of Muak, this research project addresses how Korean performance practice can be applied to the modern Western symphony orchestra. This research project also provides insights regarding the sounds of instruments in the Korean tradition and explains how it is possible to create those sounds with modern instruments in order to make Yun’s dream sounds possible. This study provides several examples and describes various performance techniques that appear in Korean traditional music. It provides indications to orchestras and conductors, assisting them to arrive at effective basic performance ideas for the performance of Muak.

The purpose of this study is to identify and elucidate the unique aspects of Isang Yun's compositional style through in-depth examination of his piano chamber works: Gasa for Violin and Piano, Garak for Flute and Piano, Nore for Cello and Piano and Riul for Clarinet and Piano. Isang Yun (1917-1995), a Korean-born composer, is renowned for having established a compositional language which expresses Eastern thought in music crafted from Western musical elements. He was a pioneer and leader who created new compositional techniques in his efforts to combine Western styles with Korean musical traditions. He achieved international acclaim for his highly developed compositional techniques such as Haupttontechnik (Main-tone Technique) and Hauptklangtechnik (Sound-complex Technique), which modernized and westernized ancient Korean performance practices and native Korean music traditions. Four chamber works for piano by Isang Yun are used to trace the development of his use of twelve-tone technique and Haupttontechnik and to identify the connection between his spiritual philosophies and his music. This essay provides these insights to give the reader a more complete understanding of the life and music of Isang Yun.

This thesis sets out to demonstrate the role of Western missionaries and Korean Christians, especially Protestants, on Korean nationalism. The first significant introduction of Protestantism into Korea came in 1884. Within just over thirty years, the Protestant Church in Korea expanded and many of the nationalist leaders took active roles in the Korean nationalist movement against Japanese imperialism. This thesis consults both Western and Korean primary sources including period newspapers. Some of the Korean primary sources were translated from Korean into English and others were originally written in English by Koreans. Also consulted are many valuable secondary sources which help further shed light on the subject at hand and give credence to the thesis. Chapters 2-4 show the direct contributions of Western missionaries to Korean nationalism and Chapters 5-7 show the indirect contributions of Western missionaries by the direct involvement of Korean Christians in their fight for independence against the old Korean order and Japan.

This study takes as case studies the traditions of three major Christian communities, the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox church, the Korean Protestant church and the Western Christianity (including Western scholars from both Protestant and Roman Catholic backgrounds.) In doing so I examine the marked discrepancies in their interpretation of Scripture and the likely factors that might have influenced their various readings and subsequent applications regarding four issues – singleness, marriage, divorce and remarriage. I will begin by exploring the relevant scholarly literature, namely: previous studies of reception in general and of the Bible in particular, previous studies of reception of the New Testament texts (especially 1 Corinthians 7); previous studies of Korean and Coptic churches concerning the Bible in general and biblical texts on these four topics. I will examine how the contemporary reading of Coptic Orthodox Christianity about divorce and remarriage issues is likely to be affected by various aspects including the biblical interpretation of the Church Fathers as well as the unique social, religious and political circumstances of the Coptic Church as a minority group in a Muslim country. I will also look into elements of influence in Korean scholarship, where the interpretation of modern Korean Protestant scholars of biblical texts on divorce and remarriage might be influenced by the long-standing cultural influence of Confucianism, fundamentalism and liberal theology. Likewise, I plan to inspect the factors that may possibly affect the reading of modern biblical scholars of Western Christianity about the related biblical passages on singleness and divorce, including the individual circumstances, religious and social background, denominational situation, theological approach (e.g. evangelical, liberal or feminist), cultural view and gender of various scholars. I will also argue that the factors which might affect the ways that modern biblical scholars of Western Christianity read the related biblical texts on singleness and divorce include the views of two Greek philosophical groups (Cynics and Stoics), two Jewish sects (Philo’s group and the Essenes), Church Fathers and apocalyptical literature, as well as Roman cults. Such a different approach of Western scholars is due to their scholarly discussion with an attempt to understand the original text through historical and critical method, unlike the approach of the two previous church groups. A final chapter will draw conclusions by evaluating each tradition in terms of their understanding and practice of these issues. In addition, the way that Paul honoured the rights of women in those areas in the first century will be briefly mentioned.

Jean Ahn (b. 1976) is one of the active Korean woman composers in the U.S. Ahn’s goal is to introduce her works in the U.S. by composing pieces that combine Korean musical elements with Western compositional techniques.
The purpose of this study is to provide an introduction to and analysis of Folksong Revisited for solo piano by Jean Ahn. This work demonstrates how Jean Ahn integrates Korean traditional musical elements and Western musical compositional techniques.
For better understanding of Ahn’s three Korean folksong arrangements in the Folksong Revisited, this document provides brief information about Korean traditional music and explores elements of it. This document also examines the folksong sources of each piece and Ahn’s compositional approaches to them, and then provides performance suggestions.

Isang Yun (1917-1995), one of the most important avant-garde German-Korean composers, is perhaps best known for his success at integrating Korean musical elements into traditional Western styles. His Concerto for Oboe, Oboe d'amore, and Orchestra incorporates many traditional Korean elements, and uses techniques such as Hauptton, Hauptklang, and Umspielung to blend these elements into a Western musical style. This study explores the elements of traditional Korean music and instruments present in Yun's score, examines his compositional techniques, and makes practical performance suggestions that allow performers to properly convey his intentions. This dissertation includes six chapters. The first chapter discusses the purpose and importance of the study. The second chapter reviews Isang Yun's biography and works, based on a published interview with Yun and a biography written by his wife of many years. The third chapter introduces the characteristics of traditional Korean woodwind instruments relevant to the work. The fourth chapter examines Yun's compositional techniques of Hauptton, Hauptklang, and Umspielung in the work and their relationship with the main-tone and Sigimsae techniques. The fifth chapter introduces and explores different types of Sigimsae in the work, with suggestions for quarter-tone performance techniques. The sixth and last chapter is a conclusion.

Isang Yun (1917-1995) is one of the most important composers in Korean history. Even though Yun is a South Korean-born composer, most of his music was composed in Germany and has been largely performed and studied in Europe, Japan, and even North Korea. His music is unfamiliar to South Korean audiences because of the political issues surrounding the East Berlin Spy Incident (1967). Isang Yun composed a massive amount of music employing his unique compositional methods, such as the Korean traditional zither technique, Nonghyun, which is very similar to the vocal technique, Sigimsae. Also Yun created a Main-Tone Technique that was influenced by Korean court music and utilized more practically for his orchestra pieces as a Main-Sound Technique. Based on Taoist philosophy, Yun employed yin and yang concepts in his compositions and formulated his music with balance. All of his techniques and styles of music were designed by employing Eastern musical language and European compositional techniques. In this thesis, I will introduce the concepts and compositional techniques of Isang Yun. Also, by analyzing how he translated Eastern musical concepts into Western musical techniques in his opera, Die Witwe des Schmetterlings (The Butterfly Widow), I will attempt to demonstrate Yun's unique compositional style which resulted from a blending of Eastern and Western musical elements. In this opera, we have a unique example of how he successfully employed his own Korean musical values and techniques within the context of Western practice. Yun rediscovered the value of his own Eastern compositional techniques and then shared his music with Western audiences.

The growing economic importance of China with its major economic power in the East Asia region has become a popular host destination for receiving foreign investment from Hong Kong, Korea, and Taiwan. With China’s growth and development, this nation has over time become one of Australia’s main trading partners. As new investment opportunities have emerged, Australian companies, especially from Western Australia have shown interest in the Chinese marketplace. Despite the popular consensus that Australian companies are increasingly investing in China, to date relevant literature examining this notion is limited. Specifically, studies of elements that motivate or deter owners / managers of Australian companies, especially from Western Australia to invest in China are restricted. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to investigate the likely relationships between four independent constructs (1. market size, 2. labour cost, 3. infrastructure, and 4. business ethics) in China and the intensity of foreign investment from Western Australia, and to evaluate if and how these relationships are mediated by personality attributes (i.e., gender), organisational properties (i.e., size), and networking.To empirically investigate the determining factor for undertaking investment in China, this study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The use of the quantitative method positivist approach is deemed as a suitable, partial approach, which assists in determining the statistical relationships between the investigated variables. Moreover, a qualitative approach was used in a complementing context to understand the quantitative results. Given the dynamic business environment in China, the use of a qualitative approach has potential for gaining a more comprehensive understanding of quantitative findings as well as providing rich information for further interpretations.
This study was conducted with 43 respondents of Western Australian companies. A salient feature of the study companies is that they either have capabilities to invest or are already investing in mainland China (People’s Republic of China, in this study identified as China). The targeted companies are involved in manufacturing and services industries, such as mining, education, banking, and telecommunication. Although collecting primary data appeared to be a challenge, the data were robust for statistical analysis. In addition, the data were from decision makers of the study companies, which further indicate the richness of the sample.
The findings of this study revealed that China’s large market size plays a positive role in attracting investments from WA to China. Similarly, the adequate level of infrastructure and the level of familiarity of business ethics in China tend to somewhat encourage WA investors to conduct business in China. In contrast, China’s cheap labour cost was not the primary driver that motivates WA companies to invest in China. In relation to the mediating effects of personality attributes (e.g., gender), organisational properties (i.e., size), and networking the study findings revealed that networking plays a significant mediating role in the investment decision. However, due to the relatively small sample size, personality attributes and organisational properties were established to provide insufficient analytical rigor in the decision to invest in China by WA companies.
The implications for this study may offer insightful information to enrich the understanding of the determinants of Australian foreign investment in general, and in the Chinese marketplace in particular. In addition, by empirically investigating the perceptions of the decision makers of WA companies in relation to their investment decisions in China, the findings of this research may assist foreign companies to undertake better planning of their investment decisions. More specifically, this study may offer additional insight to those companies that are operating or planning to invest in the Chinese marketplace. For example, this study may be particularly useful for international managers or owners, as it may provide some fruitful information to assist a better understanding of the issues that relate to business ethics with Chinese operations. In addition, the phenomenon of guanxi in China has been considered as a major determinant for facilitating business engagement in the Chinese marketplace. It may, therefore, be argued that the phenomenon of guanxi in assisting business operations in China has become increasingly important, and international managers or owners may need to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.

This thesis is an exploratory one, which examines the relationship between Western influences (such as the media, education, work, travel, and friendships) and traditional values in South Korea (such as those related to family, social relationships, nationalism, social order, leisure time, work, religion and womenÂs issues). The relationship between these was investigated in light of modernization theories and RiesmanÂs stages of societal progress. Furthermore, a survey was conducted among 579 individuals from the younger and older generations in Seoul and Daegu, to determine the degree of Western influences among the generations, and the adherence to traditional values. It was found that the younger generation clearly had more exposure to Western influences, and also adhered much less to traditional values, while the opposite held true for the older generation. A case was made that South KoreaÂs unprecedented development following Independence opened the country, especially the younger generation, to influences from the West as they had never experienced before. The generation gap that came as a result of this is extreme, and without express effort to preserve those traditional values that have shaped Korean society for so long, there may be serious ramifications for Korean society in the future.

Although all coastal states with small navies have interests in exercising control within their own Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), some of them have the capability for this task with navies having such functions, and others are comparatively still much more involved in constabulary roles within their territorial waters. While this study deals with a group of navies defined as 'C' function navies, it may also serve as a basis for theoretical thinking on the utilization of 'D' function navies. Geographically, this study focuses mainly on the Western Pacific, including the CIS, the PRC, Japan, Taiwan and North and South Korea. The U.S. is also included as it has been one of the most important actors in the Pacific and will remain so. The ROKN is and will remain a 'C' function navy. It is evident that, regardless of any national and thus physical unification of the two Korean navies, it will remain a 'C' function navy and it will still be in the middle of four major navies. In this context, the same theory could be applied to the ROKN and a united Korean navy. Although no one can predict the day of unification of the two Koreas, a study of a united Korean naval strategy is justifiable. There are a number of reasons for this: i) although there are some obstacles in the way of unification of the two Koreas, a recent trend shows that the prospects for the unification are bright; ii) the various strategic choices available to a united Korea should be developed before eventual unification; and iii) given the time span for a naval build-up, strategic analysis of a naval strategy for a united Korea should start immediately. In order to produce a workable strategy, Part One centres on the changing nature of the exercise of naval power. In this section, distinctive aspects of 'C' function navies - a new concept of naval classification - and a naval strategy for the navies are discussed. Some factors, which may undermine the utility of major naval forces and contribute to the changing nature of the exercise of naval power, are examined. In addition, a flowchart for 'C' function naval force planning is suggested.

La théorie des chaînes moyens-fins, fusionnant les valeurs du consommateur et l’évaluation des caractéristiques du produit dans une étude du comportement du consommateur, a été développée à travers les validations empiriques principalement issues des cultures occidentales. Cette recherche s’intéresse ainsi à la généralisation interculturelle de ce modèle cognitif en examinant la relation des processus culturels qui distinguent les Occidentaux des Orientaux à la formation d’enchaînement des concepts (attributs - bénéfices recherchés - valeurs). Les travaux récents ont mis en évidence que les différences individuelles en termes de construit de soi joue un rôle sur les variations interculturelles dans les cognitions et les comportements des individus qui peuvent passer à divers cadres de référence culturels en réponse à des indicateurs sociaux correspondants. A ce titre, la recherche s’inscrit dans une approche constructiviste et dynamique de la culture en positionnant le construit de soi en tant qu’indice prédictif de la variation du style cognitif, qui sous-tend par hypothèse les différentes structures cognitives des consommateurs. Le mécanisme d’influence de la culture sur les chaînes moyens-fins a été approfondi de manière expérimentale par l’utilisation croisée des méthodes d’amorçage culturel et de l’Association-Pattern Technique (213 étudiants français et 217 étudiants coréens) à la suite d’une étude exploratoire fondée sur le Laddering (52 étudiants français et 52 étudiants coréens). Les résultats montrent que le construit de soi n’est pas seulement un facteur qui influe sur les variations culturelles des chaînes moyens-fins mais que c’est aussi un facteur indirect via le style de raisonnement. En outre, il est démontré que les effets en accord avec l’amorce de soi peuvent réduire les différences interculturelles entre les consommateurs occidentaux et orientauxMeans-end chain theory, including both consumer values and evaluation of product’s attributes in the study of consumer behavior, has been developed through empirical validation primarily from Western cultures. This research thus focuses on the cross-cultural generalizability of such theoretical framework by examining the relation of cultural processes differentiating Westerners from Easterners with the hierarchical linkages between attributes, consequences and values. Previous researchers have demonstrated that individual differences in self-construal exert an important influence on cross-cultural variations in cognition and even behavior and also that individuals can switch between various cultural frames of reference in response to corresponding social cues. On the basis of a dynamic constructivist approach to culture and cognition, we suggest that self-construal is a predictive driver of cultural differences in thinking styles, thereby influencing consumers’ cognitive structures. To investigate the mechanism responsible for cultural variations of means-end content and structure, the salient self-construal was experimentally manipulated through the use of cultural priming methodologies, and then all possible combinations of attributes, consequences and values were measured by means of the Association-Pattern Technique matrices (213 French students and 217 Korean students) which had been previously defined through 52 in-depth laddering interviews conducted in each country. Our findings provide support for self-construal associated with different thinking style as a determinant of cultural differences in consumers’ means-end value hierarchy structure. There is also evidence that consumers’ cultural orientation can be made more accessible by situational prime, particularly that these effects of self-construal priming are able to reduce or eliminate cultural differences between western and eastern consumers

P’ansori is a unique form of Korean traditional music in the opera genre. It is
known for its distinctive rhythm, vocal timbre, key, and texture. Musical pioneer Dongjin Kim (1913-2009) masterfully blended authentic Korean music with Western style music most notably in two operas that retained their p’ansori heritage while also appealing to wider audiences. Kim believed in the importance of accurately portraying Korean culture and history in his vocal music feeling that Korea’s “unique national music” had much to contribute to the rest of the world. Although traditional p’ansori operas are sung with a gritty and husky voice that lacks any sense of resonance, Kim adapted this harsh style for Western singers by introducing what he called “shin-ch’ang-ak” (New Singing Music). The purpose of shinch’ang-ak was to allow singers to retain their normal vocal technique while preserving
key elements of traditional p’ansori. Previous studies of shin-ch’ang-ak have focused primarily on its history, purpose, and design and typically have been written in the Korean language. In this study I expound upon this work in English and I provide a vocal interpretation of Kim’s shin-ch’ang-ak as applied to excerpts taken from his two operas. Tal-choom is a generic term for various types of Korean mask-dance theatre that have been performed during traditional holidays and festivals over the past three hundred years. Literally 'tal' means mask and 'choom' dance. The purpose of this study is to examine the theatrical conventions of Tal-choom, its development as popular theatre, and its significance in terms of social and political changes in past and present Korea. Four types of Tal-choom continue to exist today, all being derived from their geographic origins. I have chosen to examine the Pong-san Tal-choom, which is the most widely recognized, performed type, and common to the area around north-eastern Korea. In this study, I present not only the nature of Tal-choom and its effect upon its audience but draw parallels with popular theatre. I focus on six main areas: (1) the contemporary context of Tal-choom as popular theatre; (2) the origin and development of Tal-choom; (3) the structure and performance conventions of Tal-choom; (4) the description of the cast, masks, costumes and props; (5) the performer training and the transmission of the oral tradition; and (6) audience participation. In order to convey Tal-choom more vividly, I have also translated and provided a Pong-san Tal-choom scenario. While examining the role of the participating audience and the relationship to ancient fertility festivals in Tal-choom performance, I have drawn an analogy to the Rolling Stones' "Steel Wheels" concert which took place in 1989, as a means of clarifying Tal-choom's strength as popular theatre. I firmly believe that anyone can come to a Tal-choom performance in South Korea with the same confidence he or she brings to a rock concert as an audience member in the West.
Through recognition of both the topical uniqueness and the particular characteristics of Tal-choom, this study should enable scholars to embrace more readily the universal nature of theatre. No longer can we, nor should we, ignore the power and influence of the isolated, regional theatre traditions in our study of world theatre.Graduate

The modernization and globalization of Korea during the fifty years since the end of the Korean War have brought a remarkable development in every sphere of Korean society. The emergence of female composers is one of the most interesting of these. This dissertation will discuss the music of two internationally recognized composers, Unsuk Chin and Jiesun Lim. It will do this through an analysis of one piano piece by each, 12 Piano Etudes by Unsuk Chin and Spiritual Dance by Jiesun Lim. In order to understand these pieces and these women, Korean traditional music, the one hundred year history of Western music in Korea, and the changing role of women in the society will be discussed. Part of the analysis includes the performer's perspective and suggestions on how to approach these pieces.
