Abstract:
This study examines the colors of identical scenes from five remakes and the five original Korean-Japanese drama, by mixing the country of the origin. In doing so, this study analyzes colors difference of TV drama by production countries. The comparison between the originals and the remakes is conditioning the storyline, genre and plot. Thus, the detailed color difference between Korean and Japanese dramas lies in the production style for cultural contents, instead of contents differences. According to the study's findings, colors with similar hues were favoured in both Korea and Japan, however the Japanese preference tended to be stronger. The chromaticity and brightness color combinations are contrasted between Korea and Japan. In cotrast to Korea, the contrast color combination of chroma and the similar color combination of brightness were more frequent in Japanese drams, which is the opposite to Korean dramas that the contrast combination is more prevalent in brightness measure and similar color combination in chroma measure. The study has demonstrated the need for more research into the appealing power of Korean dramas by comparing color combinations between countries.

Abstract:
With the continued development of the media, the spread of multicultural dramas has become a common concern of the drama industry, and the export of dramas has become an important way to improve the culture of countries around the world. Currently, Chinese costume drama is actively consumed through OTT platforms, such as remakes in Korea. In order to maintain this desire of Korean viewers, the subjective viewing preference factors of Korean viewers were analyzed using the Q methodology and based on this, implications for the entry of Chinese costume drama into Korea were presented. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the factors that Korean viewers prefer to watch Chinese costume dramas were divided into types that prefer traditional historical dramas and types that prefer fusion historical dramas. Cultural curiosity is the preferred factor in the pursuit of traditional culture that likes traditional historical dramas based on cultural similarities. Based on cultural similarities, fusion historical dramas can be divided into visual effect-seeking types that prefer colorful production environments and fandom-seeking types that prefer to like actors, and content excellence is the preferred factor. It can be seen that this is an individual's subjective taste in which various factors of preference for Chinese costume drama appear depending on the viewing tendency. This study is meaningful in presenting the factors of Korean viewers' preference for viewing differently depending on the preference for viewing traditional historical dramas and fusion historical dramas in the production environment of Chinese costume drama.

Abstract:
The existence of public stigma against people with disabilities encourages writers to show disability issues in a literary work, namely drama. The Korean drama 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' is one of the South Korean dramas that raises the issue of people with disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, through drama. By using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, researchers want to know and describe how the representation of autism spectrum disorder characters is displayed in the Korean drama 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo'. The theoretical foundations in this research are mass communication, drama, representation, autism spectrum disorder characters, and semiotics. This research is descriptive with a qualitative research approach. The results showed that the Korean drama 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' is a form of mass communication that provides information by representing the life of a person with an autism spectrum disorder in South Korea. This is shown by the common stereotypes imposed on people with autism spectrum disorder and the lack of tolerance of society. In addition, there are difficulties in communicating, adapting, and interacting with people with autism spectrum disorder. The drama also shows the stigma and discrimination experienced by people with autism spectrum disorder in South Korea.

Abstract:
Terdapat beberapa drama Korea yang menceritakan mengenai budaya patriarki, salah satunya drama yang berjudul when the camellia blooms (2019). Abstract Korea is one of the East Asian countries that still adheres to patriarchal culture because Korean society refers to Confucianism. In the history of traditional Korean society, women were taught from a young age to prepare for their roles as wives and mothers who maintain household harmony and care for their family members. There are several Korean dramas that tell about patriarchal culture, one of which is the drama entitled When the Camellia Blooms (2019). This research aims to explain the representation of patriarchal cultural power in the drama When the Camellia Blooms and the resistance to patriarchal cultural power in modern Korean society. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis where the author analyzes the resistance to power in modern Korean society and the representation of patriarchal cultural power in the drama When the Camellia Blooms. The results of this research show that in the drama When the Camellia Blooms there are several scenes that satirize the power of patriarchal culture in Korean social life. Gender-based injustices caused by patriarchal culture certainly give rise to resistance from women. In the drama When the Camellia Blooms there are 4 scenes that represent women's resistance to patriarchal cultural power.

Abstract:
Evidently, Korean dramas have become, within just a decade, one of the types of broadcasting content most in demand in many Asian countries, but this popularity, frequently called the Korean Wave, seems to have been obtained rather unexpectedly. This thesis examines how the Korean broadcasting industry succeeded in breaking into neighbouring markets over a relatively short period of time, and whether the Korean government played a certain role in supporting the fast acquisition of Korean dramas of Asian audiences. Through the analysis, using a combined research method, the thesis uncovers how the government’s support policies have not provided meaningful help for drama exports. Rather, the subordinate relationship of Korean broadcasters to the government and the relatively early marketisation of the Korean broadcasting industry have more efficiently stimulated Korean dramas’ entrance into neighbouring broadcasting markets.

Abstract:
From the dynamic landscape of contemporary South Korean cinema, one trend that stands out is the palpable revival of the historical drama (known as the ‘sageuk’ in Korean). Since the early 2000s, expensive, visually striking, and successful costumed pieces have been showcased to the audience. Now rivalling the other mainstream genres such as gangster action, romantic comedy, and the Korean blockbuster, the sageuk has made an indelible impact on the national film industry. Even so, the cycle has yet to receive much critical attention. This thesis addresses the gap, driven by the question, what is the impetus behind the surge of the ‘historical’ witnessed in recent sageuk films? For this, I first take a diachronic view of the historical context of the genre, which later serves as the reference point for the genre memory. Adopting a synchronic approach, I then examine the industrial, political, and social contexts in Korea at the turn of the new century that facilitated the history boom. While national memory and transnational politics fuelled Koreans’ interest in their past, the popular media – cinema, television, publishing industry, and performance theatre – all capitalised on this drive. The government also took part by supporting the ‘culture content industry’ as a way to fashion an attractive national image and accelerate the cultural export system. Collectively, these efforts translated to the emergence of history as a commodity, carving a unique space for historical narratives in the national heritage industry. As such, different agents – the consumers, the industry, and the state – had their stakes in the national mobilisation of history and memory with competing ideological and commercial interests. Ultimately, the sageuk is the primary site in which these diverging aspirations and desires are played out. In chapters that follow, I engage with four main sub-types of the recent historical drama, offering textual and contextual readings. The main discussion includes the ‘fusion’ sageuk (Untold Scandal), the biopic (King and the Clown and Portrait of a Beauty), the heritage horror (Blood Rain and Shadows in the Palace), and the colonial period drama (Rikidozan, Blue Swallow and Modern Boy). While analysing the generic tropes and narrative themes of each film, I also pay attention to contemporary discourses of gender, and the cultural treatment of masculinity and femininity within the period setting. Such investigation, in turn, locates the place of the historical genre in New Korean Cinema, and thus, offers a much-needed intervention into one of the neglected topics in the study of cinematic trends in South Korea.

Abstract:
This study explores socio-pragmatic aspects of refusals in Korean. Past researches asserted that 1) Korean speakers seldom use direct refusal formulas (e.g., Byon 2003; Lyuh 1994; Sohn 1986) and 2) Korean speakers frequently employ statement of regret/apology when refusing (e.g., Byon 2003; Kwon 2004; Lyuh 1994). Upon analysing 133 refusals drawn from Korean drama data, four generalisations are formulated, two of which are in direct conflict with the findings of past studies. The four generalisations have been further substantiated through survey process of 118 native Korean speakers in Seoul, Korea. Through the use of drama data and reinforcement via surveys, this study proposed that 1) direct refusals (e.g., direct no, negatives willingness/ability) are a common attribute of Korean refusals (showing 23.8% of total semantic formulas in the drama data), to a much greater extent than previously thought. 2) Statement of regret/apology is not a common strategy employed by native Korean speakers (1.9% of total semantic formulas in the drama data) unless a large power and/or distance variable is involved. 3) Positive opinion/feeling (e.g., "I would love to but. .. ") is also not frequently employed by native Korean speakers. 4) Frequent uses of criticism of the request/requester etc. (15.3%) identified in the data were mostly in argumentative contexts and through the results of the survey, we argue that some offrecord strategies are equally strong or stronger than bald-on-record strategies. This study introduces the use of drama as a valuable source of near-natural speech data. To date, the use of drama data in analysing speech acts have been very limited. By analysing drama data, new aspects of Korean refusals have been uncovered. In particular, this study has been found that many of the refusals involve more the augmentation of face threat than its minimisation, unless there is a large power difference and/or a distance to maintain. This is seemingly in contrast to what is assumed in the politeness theory formulated by Brown and Levinson (1987).

Park, Man Ki. "The Strange Case of the Animated Jekyll and the Online Hyde : a documentary study of Korean youth culture and identity." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/19665.

Abstract:
Robert Louis Stevenson s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) is the starting point for my practice-led research project. Stevenson's Victorian novella enables me to identify core themes which are pertinent to a discussion of the construction of contemporary identities in Korean youth culture. These identities are exemplified in the creation of avatars the virtual characters of animated online games such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). My animation practice is developed by addressing how Jekyll and Hyde provides useful critical and creative tools, such as gothic imagery and detective thrillers, for looking at the double . This concept is used to investigate the case of a young Korean boy, addicted to online gaming, who committed violent acts. My animated drama-documentary draws on research into the real and virtual Korean worlds and employs a visual ethnographic methodology to test my research question: in what ways can the construction of 'identity' (based on concepts drawn from 'Jekyll and Hyde') be identified in contemporary 'virtual' media (i.e. 'MMORPGs'/the 'animated' documentary), and how does this facilitate an address of the specific case of 'Korea' and 'Korean-ness'? The thesis is structured into five chapters: The Idea of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Theorising Identities in a Korean Context, Theorising Visual Ethnography, Theorising Animated Drama-Documentary, and A Film Practice as Animated Drama-Documentary in Visual Ethnography. Evidence of the research process and findings is located in a series of appendices. Theories about the construction of identity are discussed from three different perspectives: sociology, psychoanalysis and bio-culturalism. In my film practice, I look for the connection between the anxious self and Korean social issues, such as modernisation and the 1997 IMF economic crisis, to account for Korean youth s identity formation through online gaming. My research shows that many South Korean MMORPG users construct identity within contemporary virtual media and that this contributes to a very complex Korean-ness amongst Korean youth. Online gaming has both positive and negative consequences. Immersion in the virtual world can lead to addiction and to the violence which is at the core of my film narrative. It can also result in close online friendships, offering kinship not available in many broken families, or families inhibited in their communication by social roles and expectations, or the effect of economic failure and loss. My practice criticises young Korean people's narrow and limited social environment and proves that they desire liberal expression and decision-making for themselves, which can be experienced through the embodiment of animated avatars in MMORPGs. Hence, the online Hyde , though assumed to be a negative or destructive force, is actually a vehicle for varied and numerous social identities for youth culture preferable to those available in real Korean society. The research mounts a critique of the meaning of the online Hyde , not as a misrepresentative and negative representation of Korean-ness, but as a revelation of its contemporary meaning which can be articulated though animation, a tool which has applications within visual ethnography.

Yun, Hunam. "Appropriations of Irish drama by modern Korean nationalist theatre : a focus on the influence of Sean O’Casey in a colonial context." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34647/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis explores how a translated author on the periphery of the host culture’s translated repertoire can be at once subversive and innovative on the colonial scene, using as an example the case of Sean O’Casey in colonial Korea. It explores the importation of Irish drama in modern Korean theatre during the colonial period and examines the appropriations of O’Casey’s plays by a central Korean playwright, Yu Chi-jin, in creating his own plays. Under Japanese colonial rule in the early twentieth century, intellectuals perceived the supreme task for the Korean people to be the recovery of national sovereignty and independence. The modern Korean theatre movement which rose among Korean intellectuals and dramatists during the colonial period was to play a major part in this task. The ultimate goal of this movement was to establish a modern national theatre promoting Korean culture and educating the people, thereby recovering national independence. As their modernised dramatic polysystem was still "young", Korean intellectuals and dramatists who were involved in the theatre movement had to borrow dramatic models from other countries. One of the models they chose was Irish playwrights, especially those who were involved in the Irish dramatic movement. They published or staged the works of W.B. Yeats, Lord Dunsany [Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett], Augusta Gregory, J.M. Synge, St. J. Ervine, T.C. Murray and Sean O'Casey. Although O'Casey was considered an important dramatist in the Irish dramatic movement, he was a playwright on the periphery in the list of translated Irish dramatists in Korea due to the colonisers’ censorship. However, he remained as a subversive and innovative playwright on the colonial scene by virtue of being appropriated by Yu Chi-jin who used O’Casey’s plays as models when creating his own works. In discussing the subject matter of my thesis, I use Even Zohar’s polysystems theory as a starting point in looking at ideological issues surrounding translation and extend the discussion to offer a postcolonial perspective. While most translation in a colonial context was considered as "an expression of the cultural power of the colonisers," my thesis shifts the focus to translation as an expression of the cultural power of the colonised. I explore how the colonised uses another colonised culture to subvert the colonisers’ power.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper we combine an interest in the pragmatics of fiction with interpersonal pragmatics by exploring how Korean (im)politeness norms surface and are negotiated in fictional TV drama. Our data is derived from the streaming platform Viki.com, which allows viewers to comment on the episodes they stream. Building on previous work by (Locher, Journal of Pragmatics 170:139–155, 2020), we first report on the pervasive occurrence of scenes containing ‘moments of relational work’ in Korean TV drama and then explore how viewers comment on this very relational work. While our quantitative results show that viewers do indeed pick up on (im)politeness negotiations (in linguistic and embodied, multimodal form), this finding is relativized by the many other functions that the comments also have. Nevertheless, we are able to show question–answer sequences about relational work and identity ‘moments of teaching and learning’ about Korean (im)politeness in this online fan community.
