Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of the radical right in Japan by answering the question of why contemporary radical right groups hate Koreans. This is key to understanding the features of Japan’s radical right and how it has changed during the last half century. Unlike its predecessors, the group Zaitokukai (Civic Group Against Privileges of Koreans in Japan) seems quite similar to European radical right groups in the sense that it targets ethnic minorities with violent attacks. Is it a sign, then, that Japan’s radical right is converging with the European counterparts? The answer is partly

Abstract:
Buddhism has the reputation of being tolerant of people with non-normative sexual orientations, and for the most part of its history Buddhism does not seek to control laypeople’s sexuality. This chapter first draws from the discourses of contemporary Buddhist teachers to show the ways in which core Buddhist teachings, such as co-arising, compassionate alleviation of suffering, and middle way, can lend themselves in support of sexual and gender minorities. Then it goes further back to classical resources and explores the ways in which the traditional portrayal of the multimorphic bodhisattva Av

Abstract:
This chapter examines the complicated history of Zainichi, Korean residents in Japan, who came to Japan during the colonial era. After 1945, Zainichi lost all citizenship rights and had to fight for many rights, but the division in the Korean peninsula cast a shadow over Zainichi communities, hampering effective activism for more rights in Japan. Focusing on the issue of fingerprinting—the most salient example of rights violations against Zainichi—the chapter demonstrates how, since the late 1970s, global human rights principles have enabled Zainichi to recast their movement as claims for univ
