Abstract:
In the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century, Kosovan society faced numerous social, economic, and political problems. These problems became the main cause of the high rate of migration. Many citizens, especially young people, were forced to migrate to European countries and beyond in the absence of prospects in Kosovo. Unemployed and employed people migrated in search of a better life. Migration from Kosovo continues to be high to this day. Countries like Germany began issuing work visas to Kosovans after 2005, leading many young people to migrate to Germany. To understand the situation of Kosovan migrants before and after migration, the study (N = 350) aimed to investigate the situation of unemployment, employment, and satisfaction with pre - and post-migration earnings. The results show that around 75% of Kosovan migrants were unemployed before migrating and about 50% of those who were employed had low monthly incomes (up to 200 euros), while in the host society this situation has changed positively. The results indicate that, after the migration to the host society, about 85 % of Kosovan migrants are employed, over 50% have high incomes (around 2000 euros), and about one-third have changed their post-migration occupation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine standing height in both Kosovan genders as well as its association with foot length, as an alternative to estimating standing height. A total of 1623 individuals (830 male and 793 female) participated in this research. The anthropometric measurements were taken according to the protocol of ISAK. The relationships between body height and foot length were determined using simple correlation coefficients at a ninety-five percent confidence interval. A comparison of means of standing height and foot length between genders was performed using a t-test. Then a linear regression analysis was carried out to examine extent to which foot length can reliably predict standing height. Results displayed that Kosovan male are 179.52±5.96cm tall and have a foot length of 26.22±1.19cm, while Kosovan female are 165.72±4.93cm tall and have a foot length of 23.52±1.01cm. The results have shown that both genders made Kosovans a tall nation but not even close to be in top tallest nations. Moreover, the foot length reliably predicts standing height in both genders; but, not reliably enough as arm span.

Abstract:
The age-related decline of muscle strength, mass, and physical performance (sarcopenia) has been raising concerns among the scientific and healthcare communities. This decline may differ between populations, age groups, and sexes. Therefore, we aimed to explore sarcopenia together with the impact of health and socio-economic parameters in mature Kosovans. A cross-sectional study was conducted on community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years (n = 240, 47.1% female) from the Prishtina region. Sarcopenia was identified using the following criteria: (i) the European Working Group in Sarcopenia for Older People (EWGSOP1), (ii) the revised EWGSOP2 algorithms, and (iii) sex-specific cut-points derived from the Kosovan population. In males, pre-sarcopenia/probable sarcopenia was detected from the EWGSOP1, EWGSOP2 and Kosovan-specific criteria at values of 3.1%, 5.5%, and 28.3%; sarcopenia was detected at 1.6%, 5.5%, and 0.0%, and severe sarcopenia was detected at 4.7%, 2.4%, and 4.7%, respectively. Pre-sarcopenia was lower in females (0.9%, 5.3%, 16.8%), with no cases of sarcopenia or severe sarcopenia detected by either algorithm. Sarcopenic males were older, had a lower weight, BMI, skeletal muscle mass, performance score, nutritional status (p < 0.001), educational level (p = 0.035), and higher malnourishment risk (p = 0.005). It is notable that high overweight and obesity levels were also detected (93.8% of females, 77.1% of males). This study highlights the importance of using population-specific cut-points when diagnosing sarcopenia, as otherwise its occurrence may be underestimated, especially in obese persons. Age, body composition, physical performance, health, and socio-economic conditions can influence the occurrence of sarcopenia.

Abstract:
Abstract:The unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovar authorities in Pristina in 2008 has been the source of various controversies in international affairs. From a legal perspective, Kosovo’s secessionist drive is contrary to the well-established position of international law regarding the territorial integrity of states. From a political perspective, Kosovo’s case exemplifies the political drive to alter the law – a drive that applies to other entities in Kosovo’s position. Both these phenomena are accompanied by the divergent interests held by Kosovars as the ‘local agency’ and by the interests of Serbia and third states (including great powers) that support or oppose Kosovo’s independence. The interdisciplinary nature of this matter is enhanced by the intersection of applicable legal frameworks with competing political interests. The motivating factors – and implications of – great power conduct in this context should be examined through the prism of political realism, which provides an enhanced perspective on the relationship between legal and political factors in all their complexity.

Aims.Because no epidemiological study has been conducted of children's mental health problems in Kosova, which experienced a traumatic war in 1998–99, we conducted the first national epidemiological survey of children's mental health ever undertaken in Kosova.Methods.Participants were 1374 Kosovar children ages 6–18 recruited through schools (60% from urban areas). Parent-reported behavioural and emotional problems were assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL/6–18). Kosovar findings were compared with findings from five other Central and Eastern European societies (Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Serbia and Croatia), plus the US.Results.Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the CBCL 8-syndrome model manifested good fit to the Kosovar data. Mean item ratings and Cronbach's alphas were very similar to those of the other six societies. Kosova's mean Total Problems score fell in the middle of the range of the seven societies compared. CBCL scores were higher for adolescents (12–18), urban children, and those whose parents had limited education compared with younger (6–11), rural, and more socially advantaged children.Conclusions.Strong consistency was found between Kosovar findings and those for neighbouring countries with respect to CFA results, mean item ratings, alphas and problem score levels. Results of this epidemiological survey highlight the utility of the CBCL for identifying Kosovar Albanian children with mental health service needs.

Abstract:
In the last decade, many studies have focused their attention on the status of English in different countries, world English(es), and the usage of English. Nevertheless, none of the study was conducted in Kosovar context in the Balkan’s, although the position of English in Kosovo is extremely important. Therefore, this paper aims to review other studies and to shed light on the abovementioned issue by discussing and reflecting on national, historical, social, political, educational, cultural, and economic issues that contribute to the use of English language in everyday Kosovar lives. Taking into consideration historical points of views, the English-speaking counties’ impact in Kosovo’s independence, the high level of penetration of English loanwords, and Kosovars’ aspiration to accept and integrate these loanwords, it can be understood the high regard for English language among Albanian/Kosovar society which has also affected the everyday communication and lexis in different fields which is evident in different group ages, especially young adults. However, educational factors play the most important part in English learning. The institutional support in enhancing pedagogical practices, continuous teacher training programs, provision of desired books, native teacher mobility are considered to be the main factors that contribute to authentic English language acquisition.

Abstract:
The 1980s caught Albanians in Kosova in interesting social, political, and psychological circumstances. Two diametrically opposed dogmatic dilemmas took shape: “illegal groups” – considerably supported by students – demanded the proclamation of the Republic of Kosova and/or Kosova's unification with Albania. On the other side of the spectrum, “modernists” – gathering, among others, the political and academic elites – pushed for the improvement of rights of Kosovars guaranteed under the “brotherhood and unity” concept advocated within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). This paper outlines the nature of demonstrations that took place in March and April 1981 and the corresponding responses of political and academic elites. Stretching beyond symbolic academic reasons – demands for better food and dormitory conditions – the study points to the intense commitment of the students to their demands, often articulated in nationalistic terms. Was it inevitable that the structure of the SFRY would lead to those living in Kosova as a non-Slavic majority in a federation of “Southern Slavs” to articulate demands for national self-rule? It is necessary to highlight these political and social complexities through analytical approaches in order to track the students' goals and to reexamine assumptions behind the “modernist” agenda. In that vein, the paper analyzes the conceptual connections and differences between student reactions and modernists' positions during the historical period under discussion here.

Abstract:
Soft skills are of great importance in one’s education and social interactions. These skills are known to be highly needed and required for employment. Considering the benefits of the acquisition of the soft skills acquisition, the implementation of them in education is a necessity. Due to this, the aim of this research was to investigate where Kosova stands with the implementation of these skills, at the same time which skills are mostly used. Simultaneously aiming to understand Kosovar students’ approaches to these skills. A quantitative questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection and 115 students from different high schools of different fields of study participated voluntarily in this research. The results of this study show that soft skills are being implemented in Kosova’s education in high schools, however this contradicts with other existing studies conducted in Kosova from different approaches and perspectives. Nevertheless, teamwork results to be implemented the most amongst other soft skills, but it exceeds writings with a close difference of percentage. This paper analyzes and interprets the outcomes of the results, by backing up the arguments with factual sources to answer the two broad questions of the study.

Abstract:
On February 17, 2008,Kosovo declared its independence. The path to independence and the claim to Kosovo was a long process that developed in three primary phases: A) the fostering of territorial solidarity under direct rule and an emphasis on historical ties to the territory; B) the foundation of the national idea within the realms of proto-nationalism; and C) the emergence of peripheral and mass nationalism. This research seeks to define the development of nationalist ideologies in Kosovo and to explore where Roma fit within those ideologies. An historical and sociological approach to nationalism in Kosovo is critical in understanding the current situation of Roma living in, and deported to, Kosovo, including the recent phenomenon of ethnic scapegoating of the Roma by both Serbs and Albanians

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the study of Albanian nationalism in Kosovo with the aim of analyzing their origins and their subsequent evolution during the second half of the twentieth century until the start of the twenty-first century and the proclamation, in 2008, of an independent Kosovar state, culminating a period of recent developments in the history of Kosova so successful for the interests of their national movement.
The territory of Kosova has been, especially during the twentieth century, an area in constant dispute between two sovereignties, the Serbian and the Albanian. Since its integration into the Kingdom of the South Slavs, the precedent of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Albanians of Kosova lived, until the end of the war of 1999, under Serbian domination, except for a brief period during World War II and Nazi-fascist occupation of the Balkans that, paradoxically, unified Kosova and Albania. Kosova has been a disputed territory between two nationalist movements that have built much of his speech on the basis of the claim of that territory.
The history of the Kosova Albanian national movement focused in this work is a success story that has led this country to become an independent state, a situation hardly imaginable at the time of the genesis of the movement.
A major focus of this thesis is to study the genesis and subsequent evolution of the Albanian nationalist movement in Kosova till the historic moment when this movement proclaims the independent state of Kosova. This movement has its roots in the League of Prizren, founded in 1878, becoming the first organized expression of Albanian nationalism, then with the aim of getting rid of the Ottoman yoke and building the independent state of Albania. The establishment of an independent Albania, in 1912, which left much of Albanians outside the borders of the new state, favoured the emergence of a new peripheral Albanian nationalism, with its epicentre in Kosova, which called for the integration of territories populated mainly by Albanians to the newly created state of Albania.
The thesis has the objective of analyze the birth and evolution of Kosovar Albanian nationalism in the socialist federal Yugoslavia and explain the reasons that drove this national movement to the proclamation of an independent state, a goal that ends much of their aspirations.

Abstract:
The war in Kosova had a profound impact on the lives of the civilian population and was a major cause of material destruction, disintegration of social fabrics and ill health. Throughout 1998 and 1999, the number of killings is estimated to be 10,000 with the majority of the victims being Kosovar Albanian killed by Serbian forces. An additional 863,000 civilians sought or were forced into refuge outside Kosova and 590,000 were internally displaced. Moreover, rape and torture, looting, pillaging and extortion were committed. The aim of my dissertation is to rewrite aspects of the recent belligerent history of Kosova with a focus on how history is created and transformed through bodily expressions of distress. The ethnographic study was conducted in two Kosovar villages that were hit especially hard during the war. In both villages, my research was based on participant observation which allowed me to immerse myself in Kosovar culture and the daily activities of the people under study. The dissertation is divided into four interrelated parts. The first part is based on published accounts describing how various external power regimes affected local Kosovar culture, and how the latter was continuously transformed by the local population throughout history. The second part focuses on collective memories and explores how villagers construct their community's past in order to give meaning to their everyday lives in a time of political and economic upheaval. The third part looks at how women create, change and, thereby, influence collective memories through bodily expressions of distress. Finally, the fourth part makes apparent how through clinical practice and traditional healing, history, collective memories and traumatic memories are negotiated and invested with new meanings and attributions. The dissertation concludes with a focus on the interrelation of collective and traumatic memories which generate and justify women's health problems. In this context, it is argued that patient-practitioner interaction should be perceived as an opportunity to build ethical relationships which go beyond the relatively narrow medical mandate by providing women with "tools" to create social spaces in which they can live and commemorate in a healthy way.

Abstract:
Kosovo is struggling in its attempt to develop into a liberal democratic state, and on its path toward EU membership. The rule of law has not yet been consolidated. Corruption is connected to the lack of economic growth, and is hindering domestic progress. The political system is made up by hierarchal, close- knit structures of power, and lacks clear ideological basis. This is hindering a real democratic process from taking place, along with the lack of transparency and accountability.

Abstract:
Despite the frequency of use amongst scholars of IR, myth remains largely a term of colloquiality. However, this paper aims to argue that as a distinct temporal and normative structure within discourse, it is a powerful tool for understanding the ways in which narratives give meaning to political phenomena, not just by describing how they are, but how they ought to be. To explain the function of myth, a case study of Kosovo has been conducted. Much scholarly debate on the nature of internationally contested states exists, but we will make the argument that Kosovo is best understood as a being in a state of liminality, due to the conflicting nature of its political structures and foreign intervention. By joining the theory discourse of Laclau and Mouffe, with insights from psychoanalysis we suggest a framework for analysing the distinct nature of political myths. The utopian horizons of myth spell out two antagonistic narratives of sovereignty in Kosovo: one of European integration and market liberalisation, and one of unification with Albania.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the Kosovar agricultural economy and the introduction of new approaches. Kosova is an economy in transition with high unemployment, young population and structural problems. The privatization process promises a better future and economic growth. However, hard work and new approaches are needed. Privatization does not mean immediate growth. Hereby, clusters are considered as an appropriate approach to develop rural areas. Especially the wine sector in Kosova could be an example for cluster development as it is a promising sector. Wine has a long history in Kosova although wine consumption is not widespread. This sector is a rare example where exports are higher than imports. Climate conditions cheep working force and as stated the background make this sector attractive. Foreign agencies and investors are very interested in this sector. This thesis will show the main problems and main opportunities of this sector. It will describe the structural changes and current developments. Cluster creation is not a government function. Further, it is not a tailor-made solution. In fact, clustering involves many roles. Each participant has certain duties but the whole process needs coordination. The monitoring and supervision of the whole process, the identification of needs and permanent exchange of the participants are organized in a cluster. At the end, a win-win situation is created even if competition is raised to a high level. Competition and the functioning of free markets guarantee the success of the sector and as a results regional development. One cluster helps to create another. Starting one process means that many others could follow. By reading this thesis, the reader should recognize potentials and understand the local circumstances. This is the aim of the study.

Abstract:
This article empirically examined how Kosovan SMEs finance their working capital and their investments through their growth life cycle. Using the financial growth cycle paradigm to test the financial growth cycle based on a sample of 100 Kosovan SMEs’ reporting data since their inception of business. Findings show that Kosovan SMEs use various sources to finance their working capital and investments throughout their life cycle. To finance their working capital needs, during the first two years of operation, Kosovan SMEs rely more on insider capital sources such as personal savings, financing offered from 3F connection - friends, family, fools, retained earnings, and also trade credit takes a significant place. Over time, as businesses evolve through age, the proportion of retained earnings and business debt financing in total capital injection volume increases significantly. As firms grow older, financing from trade credit marks a decline, so the SMEs replace it with using more overdraft. During the first years of operation, to finance their investments, Kosovan SMEs rely primarily on owner’s personal savings, financing from 3F connection - friends, family, and fools, retained earnings, but as the company grows older and becomes more extensive, they rely mainly on two sources: retained earnings and bank loans. In general, concerning debt, Kosovan SMEs use more trade credit and overdraft to finance their working capital and bank loans to finance their investments. Funding from 3F is mainly used during the initial phase of operation. However, the most used resource by Kosovan SMEs in all stages of operation remains retained earnings, while external equity raised from angels and venture capitalists and other alternative financing are almost inexistent.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of the paper is to present research analysis which aims to recognize the art of Kosovan piano music through analysis for interpretation as a relatively new discipline born in the late 90s that today in the world counts numerous publications. The qualitative-descriptive methodology is used in this paper. It entails interpreting and analyzing music, with a focus on Rauf Dhomis Opus 70 Pieces for Piano. Many European countries have previously experienced the splendor and enchantment of the Renaissance, but Kosovo is currently undergoing a true Renaissance following its independence in 2008. The general characteristics of the Kosovan Renaissance have been reflected in less than twenty years, with a clean impetus and energy that has built through time in the entire nation, includingall aspects of life, and thus the sphere of art, and the magical world of music. Despite the challenges that the Kosovan artist has faced in the past, he still has the ability to overlook themin favor of the beautiful and magical. That is why the Renaissances magic lives on now, granting many artists in the arts, such as instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers, a well- deserved place in Europes and the worlds most prominent stages.

Abstract:
This is a study that addresses Kosovar and Albanian identity relationships, highlighting the similarities and differences of these two communities throughout their historical journey on their respective lands. The study identifies the key historical moments that have influenced Kosovar national identity branding and concludes that the occurrence of cultural and political differences within the Albanian ethnicity since the nineteenth century has been instigated by the Serbian stance regarding Kosova. The study substantiates a clear cultural and political identity of Kosova, indicating its forthcoming solidification whilst keeping Kosovar and Albanian differences distinct, despite the eventual change in Belgrade’s stance towards Kosova. Concerns are arising from some of the voices in European diplomacy that favour Tirana’s official involvement in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. An analysis of the progression of their historical path, however, indicates the opposite, i.e., Tirana’s involvement in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue would only benefit Belgrade and consequently have a negative impact on the compromises between Kosova and Serbia that the US and the European Union aim for.

McNeil-Willson, Richard. Applicability of Channel Vulnerability Assessment Framework and Programme for Kosovo. ICCT, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19165/2024.5049.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the applicability of the Channel Vulnerability Assessment Framework and the Channel procedures in the context of Kosovo. It does this by examining the way in which the current Channel procedures are constructed with regard to risk assessment, the process of referrals, and the methods of rehabilitation or deradicalisation. The paper will also look at some of the problems of criticisms of the Channel approach, and the problematic implications that such an approach may have, as well as considering whether and how there might be an opportunity to remedy or resolve these. Ultimately, the paper finds that there are both risks and possibilities with deploying a Channel framework in a Kosovan context, although significant care must be taken, as the British context presents significant differences to the Kosovan, whilst it is also important to avoid replicating the mistakes that have been made by the UK Government during Prevent and Channel implementation.
