Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, I begin by outlining two assumptions that are routinely taken for granted in ethical discourse, one of which entails that values have subjective existence. I then consider a causal account of valuational activity offered by Bruce Morito which serves to question the truth of that assumption, and the extent to which that account falls short of overturning it. Finally, in light of that short-coming, I sketch what I characterize as a “quasi-objective theory of value” the truth of which depends upon a non-regularist and non-actualist conception of laws of nature

William Spiers Bruce was a medical student who sailed as ship's surgeon on the Balaena, one of the ships of the Dundee Whaling Expedition to the Antarctic (1892–93). On this expedition he kept a diary listing his medical consultations and the treatments he administered. This paper considers the expedition and the diaries.

This paper describes a subassemblage seismic test program performed on six buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). Two different brace core segment lengths and two different buckling-restraining mechanisms were examined. The applied loading histories included a qualifying quasi-static cyclic test with stepwise incremental displacement amplitudes and a dynamically applied seismic loading. A test was also carried out on a conventional bracing member for comparison purposes. The concrete-filled tube specimens exhibited satisfactory performance under the quasi-static loading protocol, regardless of the

The Bruce effect is a pheromonally mediated process whereby exposure to chemosensory cues from an unfamiliar male terminates pregnancy in a recently mated female. Pharmacological and genetic evidence implicates both oxytocin (Oxt) and vasopressin (Avp) in the regulation of social memory in males, but less work has been done in females. We tested the extent to which the Avp receptors (Avprs) 1a and 1b and Oxt are essential for the Bruce effect, a phenomenon that relies on olfactory memory. Adult female mice were paired with stimulus males and monitored for the presence of sperm plugs. Wild-type

<em>Hollow Structural Section (HSS) members are known to possess many advantages over equivalent open sections, including better resistance to torsion as well as tension and compression loading, aesthetic appearance and economy in terms of material cost. Connections between HSS members could be made simple by cutting the ends and welding together. However, depending on joint configuration and number of members connected, this may result in complex and expensive connections. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the global challenges the planet faces, including those related to poverty, inequality and climate change. Researchers worldwide have kept the seventeen SDGs as their aim and English has been the international lingua franca of knowledge transfer (Jenkins, 2014). In order to carry out a preliminary exploratory research about the SDGs’ lexicon, we used the Brazilian Corpus of Academic English - BrACE (TAVARES PINTO, P., REES, G., FRANKENBERG-GARCIA, A., 2021; PINTO et al., 2021), which was compiled with articles in English published

As one who has suggested in print that Christopher Columbus Langdell was a loony, I am singularly pleased that Bruce Kimball has so carefully demonstrated that Kit was a regular guy just trying to teach his classes and learn some law. But this observation seems to me to be not particularly relevant to the debate about Langdell that I have mostly watched, but occasionally commented on. I shall try to recreate that debate as best I can, to show where it stands, and so, to identify where an understanding of Langdell's teaching places us.

Abstract:
In Dutch and German subordinate clauses, the verb is generally placed after the clausal constituents (Subject-Object-Verb structure) thereby creating a middle field (or verbal brace). This makes interpreting from SOV into SVO languages particularly challenging as it requires further processing and feats of memory. It often requires interpreters to use specific strategies (for example, anticipation) (Lederer 1981; Liontou 2011). However, few studies have tackled this issue from the point of view of interpreting into SOV languages. Producing SOV structures requires some specific cognitive effort

The connections Rhee built with Americans during his four-decades-long campaign and the prestige these connections afforded him contributed directly to his rise to power in postwar Korea. Thanks largely to the debate that Bruce Cumings began in the 1980s about the origins of the Korean War, we know in some detail the actions taken by Koreans in the days immediately after Japan’s capitulation but prior to the joint Russian-American occupation. Hoping to prevent anarchy and the massacre of Japanese citizens in Korea, Japan cooperated with Korean independence activist Yeo Un-hyeong in establishin

Rack Phase Difference or RPD may occur during jacking up at a location when the jack-up spudcan is eccentrically supported on the bottom or has lateral offset and the resulting moment and shear is carried essentially by the horizontal guide reactions. The RPD is the difference in vertical positions of rack teeth of different chords of one leg. This is a result of vertical shear deformation of the adjacent chords of one leg of a trussed jack-up. Among the causes of RPD the following are common: uneven or sloping seabed, preexisting spudcan holes, leg offset, rapid penetration, uneven jacking fo
