Full textAbstract
The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the organization's importance to teachers' working environment. Through a survey conducted at a primary school in New Zealand and at a primary school in Sweden, teacher perceptions of their psychosocial work environment were compared. This study has answered the questions: ‘How does a teacher at a school in New Zealand and at a school in Sweden view their psychosocial work environment from an organizational perspective?’ and ‘What are the similarities and differences in psychosocial working environment between a school in New Zealand and a school in Sweden?’ The results were analyzed based on Karasek and Theorells demands-control-social support model. The study shows that teachers at both schools are experiencing high demands, but that New Zealand teachers are experiencing greater demands. The Swedish teachers experienced greater control. A possible reason for this is a more bureaucratic (hierarchical) structure of the New Zealand school organisation. Finally, the results show that New Zealand teachers found more support from superiors, while the Swedish teachers found more support from colleagues.

Full textThis bachelor thesis in public administration is about how middle managers in state administrations are experiencing work-related stress. We have studied how the combination between demands and the possibility of control of tasks looks when it comes to how work-related stress is induced in men and women. The study also shows what influence social support in the workplace has for these factors. The essay begins with an introductory chapter followed by the purpose and our questions. The chapter previous research leads to problems discussion and reference framework that follows is the basis for the interview questions. The interviews have been answered by seven respondents representing three different organizations within the government administration. After transcribing the interviews, these were analyzed in connection to the reference frame and finally led to our discussion and conclusions of the study. The conclusions to be drawn from the study is that the middle managers we interviewed are not particularly stressed. Occasionally there may be periods that can be stressful but most of the respondents find it manageable. We think there is one part which is particularly important to a middle manager so they are able to handle the demands and negative stress, and this is the social support at the work place. Almost all of our respondents say somewhere in the interview that they suffer with work related stress from time to time but they say they are stress-resistant individuals. Some feel that they have high demands in their work situation, either from themselves or from the environment, but other factors weigh this up, such as social support. A sense of control over their work situation seems to be an important factor for good health. Our study suggests that our respondents feel that they have this. Some of the respondents are experiencing increased stress when they see that the employees stress, but consistently they feel that it is one's own responsibility to deal with potential stressors and make sure it does not get too much. The study is written in swedish

Full textAim and questions The study aims to examine and compare which factors in teachers’ work environment, in both metropolitan and small urban areas, correlate with teachers' perceived health. To meet this aim, three questions were designed: (1) What do teachers experience as stress factors in their work environment affecting their health? (2) What influence do the school management and colleagues have on their perceived health? (3) How does the teachers' perceived health correlate with their physical activity level? Method A quantitative method with a questionnaire has been used for the study. In essence, the questionnaire was designed with closed answers. A so-called comfort selection has been made for the choice of schools, where teachers at each school who wanted to participate in the study formed the basis for the collection of data. Overall 98 questionnaires were collected and the statistical analysis was done with help of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS version 19.0. Theoretical frameworks used were Antonovsky's SOC-theory (Sense of Coherence) and Karasek´s and Theorell´s Requirements-control-support model. Results Our results show that there is a strong correlation between mental and physical health, both for teachers in the metropolitan (p = 0.01) and smaller urban area (p = 0.08). The participants from both areas feel that they have a good mental health and that it makes sense to go to work. Over 40% answer that they often (3-5 days per week) feel that they experience self-monitoring, manageability, meaningfulness as teachers and that they are a part of a context. Factors that correlate with mental health are demands from students, school management and themselves. With regard to the physical environment, factors that affect teachers in both metropolitan and small urban areas are noise level and cleanliness. School management plays a large role in teachers' perceived health, both in metropolitan (p => 0.000) and in smaller urban areas (p = 0.009). However, over 50% of the teachers feel that they do not have support from school management. Teachers indicate that administrative tasks, time, planning and working environment are important factors in relation to their experienced health. The result also shows that experienced physical health among teachers correlates with the feeling of waking up refreshed and the ability to relax. The teachers in both metropolitan and less urban areas feel that they have a good physical health. For teachers in metropolitan areas, there is a correlation between support from friends and how physically active you are. Conclusions A conclusion to be drawn from this study is that there are small differences between teachers’ experienced health and work environment in metropolitan and less urban areas. The majority of the teachers feel they have a experienced health, both mentally and physically, and are doing well. A contributing factor to this could be that teachers experience strong support from colleagues, friends and relatives. This could suggest that social networks constitute a form of coping strategy, which help teachers manage their stress. A high percentage of the teachers seem to find a balance between perceived demands and finding resources to experience the sense of coherence. Based on the demands-control-support model, this means that teachers experience a feeling of balance.

Full textThe image of teachers' work situation as presented in the media is usually negatively biased. For example, a survey shows that only a third of the teachers perceive their psychosocial work environment as well. About half of the perceived problems with the work environment can be traced to the administrative workload. Despite this experience the majority of teachers in primary schools finds their work meaningful and feel support from their colleagues. There are thus two parallel and sometimes contradictory images of how teachers perceive their work situation . The purpose of this study was that from a salutogenic perspective examine the healthy and risk factors teachers on an F-6 school experienced in their workplace and how these factors can affect teachers' perception of health in their work. This may be the basis for continued health promotion efforts at teacher workstations. The method used in the data collection was qualitative individual interviews with six teachers. The results showed a split image of teachers' perceptions of their work environment. The health factors that were strongest and that the teachers were most consistent about was teaching and the meaningfulness around the work with the pupils, the duties and the support they experienced from work colleagues and managers. The majority of teachers felt that they perceived imbalance between the work with the pupils and other work. The teachers felt that documentation and other tasks took up more space in their working time than what they wanted and many of them expressed a desire to have more time for planning lessons. The conclusion is that teachers feel good and like teaching and want more time for this.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to illuminate the psychosocial work environment of social workers and to examine whether there is a correlation between their psychosocial work environment and quality of the work that they do. The hypothesis in the study was that such correlation exists. A web survey was sent to all social workers in the county of Värmland. Population consisted of 284 social workers, of whom 171 answered the survey, giving a response rate of 60.2%. The theoretical framework for the study has been the demand-control-support model by Karasek & Theorell and quality based on the Law for Social Services together with quality fields from Socialstyrelsen. Quantitative method was used in the study. The results have been analyzed with univariate and multivariate analysis, logistic regeression analysis, χ²-test and Cronbach´s Alpha test. The study reveals that many social workers experience that their psychosocial work environment contains high demands, low control and low social support. A high share is also experiencing a work environment with low demands, high control and high social support. The results of the survey also indicate that there is a correlation between the psychosocial work environment measured on the basis of demand-control-support model and the perceived quality of work, which confirms the hypothesis. Demand has the strongest correlation with quality of the studied variables. High work demands result in lower perceived quality whether the workers experience high or low support and control or not.

Full textAim: The aim of this study is to highlight the impact of Lean Production from an employee perspective, with a focus on perceived impact of well-being. This is done by mapping the JDC(S)-model's three dimensions Demand, Control and social Support. Method: The study is based on the hermeneutic science tradition with a social constructivist approach to reality. Theory and empirical evidence are related through a deductive research approach in a case study. A qualitative method through ten semi-structured interviews form the basis of the empirical material, which subsequently is analyzed in a thematic analysis. Result & Conclusions: The study suggests that employees experience the effects of Lean Production as higher demands coupled with low job control. However, the negative effects this can entail on the well-being seems to be reduced if the employees receive a strong social support from colleagues, line manager and family. Suggestions for further research: Primarily we find two areas in the study where we believe that a deeper understanding could be achieved through further research. The first is a complementary anonymous survey where employees' relationship with their line manager is studied. The second is a detailed literature study about colleagues' intrinsic desire to help each other in the workplace. In addition, we believe that further research on whether shorter working hours can increase productivity and employee well-being would be interesting. Contribution of the thesis: The study highlights the importance of social support for the perceived well-being among employees. Social support seems to be especially important in jobs that are associated with high demands and low degree of job control, such as in manufacturing.

Full textOur common interest in the work environment founded the idea of this study, our bachelor degree project, which aims at describing the teachers' work situation with a focus on psychosocial work environment and working conditions and the importance of leadership for the individual work environment experience. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on the psychosocial work environment and addresses areas such as leadership, job-demand-control-support model, work-related stress, communication and teachers' working conditions. The method is of a qualitative nature, in which six semistructured interviews were conducted with five teachers and one principal, all of whom are employed in elementary school. The result shows that teachers experience a high level of administrative burden that needs to be reduced in order for the work situation to be considered manageable and contribute to a sustainable working life. The teachers who considered themselves having a reasonable workload have access to support, something that those who find themselves having a too heavy workload are missing. A thematisation of the key areas that could be read from the respondents' answers was established: workload, the need for support and leadership, the view of leadership, and the role of teacher and the educational task. Then the result was analyzed using the theoretical reference frame. The conclusions we can draw from the study are that there are three variables that are crucial for teachers' experiences regarding their own work environment: time, support and communication. If these variables are present in the business, the staff tend to feel better, but if these variables are completely absent, they tend to have the opposite effect, an unmotivated and unattended staff. Leaders in the school system should thus work continuously and structured with these three variables to counteract the negative trend of sick leave and redundancies among teachers in the Swedish school.

Full textThis study is based on the Swedish work environment authority statute book about organisational and social work environment, AFS 2015:4 provisions, that has been developed to promote a good work environment and prevent risks of ill health. Because of the increasing numbers of work-related ill health due to stress and mental strain, the focus in this study was unhealthy workloads and if there is knowledge in the municipality about preventing and dealing with these risks. The aim was to examine how the municipality practically work with the provision within three organizational levels and how the employees perceive their psychosocial work environment. There were also focus on investigating how employees participate in the above environment work. The study was based on a hermeneutic perspective with a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews. One group interview consisting two employees representing the HR department and two individual interviews at the managerial level. At the employee level, two group interviews were held with three employees from the departments headed by the managers. The outcome of the study shows that good results can be obtained in the psychosocial work environment when all organizational levels integrates these issues in their systematic work environment and establish routines to prevent and dealing with unhealthy workload. The study confirms that social support, knowledge, communication and employee participation are important factors for a healthy psychosocial work environment. The discussion shows the importance of taking time for preventing ill health and suggestions about using the demand/control/support-model as a tool for analysing and reflect over the employee workload.
