The schools for Kriashens in the time of Alexander II The Tatar Kriashen school in Kazan was founded in 1864 by Nikolai Umiński and his disciple Vassili Timofeev at the time when many Kriashens (Orthodoxs Tatars) wanted to convert to Islam. The aim of the school was to touch the children, more malleable than their parents. In order to do this it was necessary to compete with the Moslems schools. The article characterizes folk music traditions of Kriashens, the Christianized Tatars of the Volga-Ural region. The author focuses on materials collected during an expedition in 2013 to the Mamadysh region of Tatarstan, Russia.
