Full textThe purpose of this essay is to contribute to an extensive understanding of former criminals and addicts. These people are facing several difficulties and possibilities during childhood, adolescence, the active period, the turning-point and life after the turning-point and we have examined what they might consist of.
In this survey we have applied a qualitative method and collected our basis from interviews with former criminals and addicts. Criminality and addiction is a complex problem. There are many different factors which contribute to develop this. The most differential factors are; insecure childhood, low self-esteem and wrong kind of friends. We have discovered that it is a long process filled with difficulties which leads to weary of the lifestyle and ultimately to a turning-point (maturing out). Further we found the importance of a non criminal network connected to the turning-point and the life after that.

Full textIn this assignment I've written about inmates and their road to where they are today. My focus is on why my sources got involved with crime, whether the first detention had any after effects, their attitudes towards crime and whether drugs or alcohol is a factor in their criminal career. I've made ten qualitative interviews. The sources' age ranges from 23 to 43 and they have had from one up to an unknown number of sentences. The source with an unknown number of sentences had lost count of how many convictions he had. The purpose of my assignment was to convey the inmates' perception of prison and what effect, if any, the first incarceration have had on their criminal careers. I've also tried to find out about their experiences with sentences at a young age and what effect this might have had on their criminal career. Societies' official reasons for incarceration is rehabilitation of the inmates, a theory of preventative or deterrent effect, the belief in an neutralizing of the inmate through individual preventative measures and the idea of a prison sentence as a form of retribution for the victim and society at large. Mathisen (2007) feels prison sentences can not be justified through these reasons. In my assignment I'll look at the rehabilitation aspect of prison, from the inmates' point of view. The sources in my study told me that prison and their first incarceration led to an explosive escalation of their criminal activities. My sources were all between 16 and 19 years old during their first sentences, and felt that their young age made them more impressionable than if they'd gone to jail later in life. Most experienced prison as an intimidating place at first, but that this soon passed as they were all taken good care of by their fellow inmates. First time convicts are trained and their circle of criminal acquaintances are expanded hugely due to the amount of people going in and out of prison. My sources told me that their desires to pursue a further career in crime was increased by their first sentence, as their abilities and knowledge had increase while in prison.
