Abstract:
AbstractDescribing complex objects by elementary ones is a common strategy in mathematics and science in general. In their seminal 1965 paper, Kenneth Krohn and John Rhodes showed that every finite deterministic automaton can be represented (or “emulated”) by a cascade product of very simple automata. This led to an elegant algebraic theory of automata based on finite semigroups (Krohn-Rhodes Theory). Surprisingly, by relating logic programs and automata, we can show in this paper that the Krohn-Rhodes Theory is applicable in Answer Set Programming (ASP). More precisely, we recast the concept of a cascade product to ASP, and prove that every program can be represented by a product of very simple programs, the reset and standard programs. Roughly, this implies that the reset and standard programs are the basic building blocks of ASP with respect to the cascade product. In a broader sense, this paper is a first step towards an algebraic theory of products and networks of nonmonotonic reasoning systems based on Krohn-Rhodes Theory, aiming at important open issues in ASP and AI in general.

Abstract:
This paper explores how electroencephalography (EEG) signals in the Krohn-Rhodes form can be decomposed further using the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition technique. First, the recorded EEG signals of a seizure were transformed into a set of matrices. Each of these matrices was decomposed into its elementary components using the Krohn-Rhodes decomposition method. The components were then further decomposed into semisimple and nilpotent matrices using the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition. These matrices—which are the extended building blocks of elementary EEG signals—provide evidence that the EEG signals recorded during a seizure contain patterns similar to that of prime numbers.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper provides short proofs of two fundamental theorems of finite semigroup theory whose previous proofs were significantly longer, namely the two-sided Krohn-Rhodes decomposition theorem and Henckell’s aperiodic pointlike theorem. We use a new algebraic technique that we call the merge decomposition. A prototypical application of this technique decomposes a semigroup $T$ into a two-sided semidirect product whose components are built from two subsemigroups $T_{1}$, $T_{2}$, which together generate $T$, and the subsemigroup generated by their setwise product $T_{1}T_{2}$. In this sense we decompose $T$ by merging the subsemigroups $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$. More generally, our technique merges semigroup homomorphisms from free semigroups.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine the leadership strategy of the publicly owned organisation, Innovation Norway, between 2014 and 2019, when it was under the leadership of former CEO Anita Krohn Traaseth. Design/methodology/approach The author, Vlatka Hlupic, Professor of Leadership and Organisational Transformation at Hult Ashridge Executive Education and CEO of The Management Shift Consulting Ltd, looked at Anita’s examples of courageous leadership while in office. Anita drew upon the different “levels” of individual mindset and corresponding organisational culture in the Emergent Leadership Model, in Vlatka’s book: The Management Shift. Findings Vlatka’s leadership strategy allowed Anita to oversee a cultural change in Innovation Norway from a traditional bureaucratic set-up to one based on entrepreneurship. Through trust and transparency, Anita was open with her staff and the Norwegian society at large about the transitional work, sharing not only good results but also difficult times and resistance, publishing her personal working contract as well as the organisation’s goals. Anita found Vlatka’s Emergent Leadership model an effective and honest way of guiding an existing culture into another culture. Originality/value Readers should come away with an understanding of how courageous leadership requires an acceptance that those in power cannot control everything. Delivering a process, a new way of thinking and working, can be an extremely challenging and risky transition, but effective leaders will believe in that process and follow it through, even if criticism and dissatisfaction occurs, in the knowledge that by being open and honest with their team throughout, they will reach business goals, unified and empowered.

Abstract:
We consider the Krohn–Rhodes complexity of certain semigroups of upper triangular matrices over finite fields. We show that for any n > 1 and finite field k, the semigroups of all n × n upper triangular matrices over k and of all n × n unitriangular matrices over k have complexity n - 1. A consequence is that the complexity c > 1 of a finite semigroup places a lower bound of c + 1 on the dimension of any faithful triangular representation of that semigroup over a finite field.

Over the last 40 years the problem of geophone coupling has received regular attention. The problem of geophone coupling is the difference between the velocity as measured by the geophone and the velocity of the ground without the geophone. The papers published on this subject are based either on experimental work or on theoretical considerations. Washburn and Wiley (1941) show the remarkable differences between records from geophones laid on the surface and geophones placed on wooden posts driven about 1 ft into the ground. Similar observations were made by other experimentalists such as Fail et al. (1962), Hoover and O’Brien (1980), Omata (1983), and Krohn (1984).

For von Neumann algebras with Abelian commutant (i.e. type I von Neumann algebras), we give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the generator of such a semigroup to be written as a sum of square of self-adjoint derivations of the von Neumann algebra. This generalizes some of the results obtained by Albeverio, Høegh-Krohn and Olsen1 for the special case of the finite-dimensional matrix algebras. We also study similar questions for a class of quantum dynamical semigroups with unbounded generators.

We develop the theory of transformation semigroups that have degree 2, that is, act by partial functions on a finite set such that the inverse image of points have at most two elements. We show that the graph of fibers of such an action gives a deep connection between semigroup theory and graph theory. It is known that the Krohn–Rhodes complexity of a degree 2 action is at most 2. We show that the monoid of continuous maps on a graph is the translational hull of an appropriate 0-simple semigroup. We show how group mapping semigroups can be considered as regular covers of their right letter mapping image and relate this to their graph of fibers.

Abstract:
The implicit operation ω is the unary operation which sends each element of a finite semigroup to the unique idempotent contained in the subsemigroup it generates. Using ω there is a well-defined algebra which is known as the free aperiodic semigroup. In this article we introduce a specific and rather elementary list of pseudoidentitites, we show that for each n, the n-generated free aperiodic semigroup is defined by this list of pseudoidentities, and then we use this identification to show that it has a decidable word problem. In the language of implicit operations, this shows that the pseudovariety of finite aperiodic semigroups is κ-recursive. This completes a crucial step towards showing that the Krohn–Rhodes complexity of every finite semigroup is decidable.

Cattle have an innate fear of humans that may be reinforced during the potentially painful routine husbandry procedures performed by humans during the rearing of young calves. This fear may be reduced by positive handling of calves early in the rearing period (Krohn et al., 2001) and by use of calming devices such as blindfolds (Mitchell et al., 2004). Mitchell et al, (2004) found that blindfolding cattle during restraint and simulated husbandry procedures reduced struggling by 44% and decreased heart rate compared to control cattle with unrestricted vision. However, this study did not test the effectiveness of the blindfold during actual invasive procedures. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether blindfolding during disbudding and positive handling of dairy calves would influence the response of calves to human interactions.

This model serves as the basis for the definition of an "object field” of psychology of traffic in Europe, and helps to highlight the most important and significant aspects, both for applied research and various kinds of psychological practices in this area. Model authors: A. Allhof-Cramer, B. Krohn, G. Laub, W.Nickel, C. Rolfing, B. Rothenberger, W. Schubert, E. Stephan. It is the first presentation of this model in Russia which is made with a consent of the members of the Organizational Committee of the “Traffic Psychology International” (the German version is presented below)

Abstract:
We show how the Rhodes expansion Ŝ of any stable semigroup S embeds into the cascade integral (a natural generalization of the wreath product) of permutation-reset transformation semigroups with zero adjoined. The permutation groups involved are exactly the Schützenberger groups of the [Formula: see text]-classes of S. Since S ←← Ŝ is an aperiodic map via which all subgroups of S lift to Ŝ, this results in a strong Krohn–Rhodes–Zeiger decomposition for the entire class of stable semigroups. This class includes all semigroups that are finite, torsion, finite [Formula: see text]-above, compact Hausdorff, or relatively free profinite, as well as many other semigroups. Even if S is not stable, one can expand it using Henckell's expansion and then apply our embedding. This gives a simplified proof of the Holonomy Embedding theorem for all semigroups.

Abstract:
Unlike the wreath product, the block product is not associative at the level of varieties. All decomposition theorems involving block products, such as the bilateral version of Krohn–Rhodes' theorem, have always assumed a right-to-left bracketing of the operands. We consider here the left-to-right bracketing, which is generally weaker. More precisely, we are interested in characterizing for any pseudovarieties of monoids U, V the smallest pseudovariety W that contains U and such that W □ V = W. This allows us to obtain new decomposition results for a number of important varieties such as DA, DO and DA * G. We apply these results to characterize the regular languages definable with generalized first-order sentences using only two variables and to shed new light on recent results on regular languages recognized by bounded-depth circuits with a linear number of wires and regular languages with small communication complexity.

Abstract:
Among countries like Germany, France and England, Denmark took part in the ‘japanomania’ that swept the West in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Key figures in promoting Japanese art were art historian Karl Madsen and artist and museum director Pietro Krohn. Both played a significant role in trying to establish Denmark in the field of Japanese art on a par with serious international art collectors and connoisseurs. Their connections to Justus Brinckmann in Hamburg and Siegfried Bing in Paris enabled them to put on exhibitions that would introduce to a Danish audience a, so far, relatively unknown and ‘exotic’ art and culture. Often perceived in the West as expressing an innate understanding of nature, Japanese art became a source of inspiration for Danish artists and designers, such as Arnold Krog, who would create a synthesis between the Nordic and Japanese in his porcelain works.

Abstract:
As part of a study dealing with polychaetes (Annelida: Polychaeta) from soft bottoms of the western coasts of AcapulcoBay, southern Mexican Pacific, 574 specimens of the genus Syllis Lamarck, 1818 were analyzed. Nine species are report-ed, of which Syllis garciai (Campoy, 1982) and Syllis glarearia (Westheide, 1974) are new records for the Mexican Pa-cific. Syllis magnipectinis (Storch, 1967), described from the Red Sea, is newly reported in the eastern Pacific; notes onits morphological variations and its distribution range are herein included. Additionally, two new species of Syllis are de-scribed: S. antoniae n. sp., is closely related to S. vivipara Krohn, 1869, but it has bidentate falcigers with a smaller sub-distal tooth and some falcigers with coarse spines on the edge. S. deleoni n. sp., is characterized by having bidentate falcigers with broad teeth and coarse spines and the body densely covered with papillae.
