Ebersolt, Simon. "Contingence et communauté. Kuki Shûzô, philosophe japonais." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCF027.

Abstract:
This study focuses on Kuki Shûzô’s entire oeuvre: not only on his theories of contingency, rhyme, and time, and his essay on iki (the ethical and esthetical ideal of Edo period), but also on his cultural-political assertions on ethnic people (minzoku) and war. This essay on history of Japanese philosophy tries to present and develop dialogues that Kuki maintained, sometimes directly, with European philosophers of the time (in particular Bergson and the phenomenologists), but also Japanese philosophers (in particular Watsuji and Tanabe) as well as the broader intellectual world (the “movement of culturalism” of the Taisho era, debates on Japanese poetry and the “literature of contingency”). It was from these dialogues that Kuki’s concepts emerged.I interpret his oeuvre by emphasizing tensions between insistence on the “given concrete” and the principle of identity. Claimed by Kuki against the idea of an abstract universal, the given concrete is embodied by several figures of “we”, of the common, which are characterised by difference with others: ethnic people, intersubjective coexistence of iki, the contingent encounter between individuals, of which I give a phenomenological interpretation. Logic of identity is represented by the idea of ethnic identity, the metaphysics of eternal return of the same, and the praxis of assimilation of others in the identity of the “I”. I clarify the way Kuki systematizes this tension, as well as the consequences of this systematization on ethical and political problems of community and relationships between the individual, nation, and world

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the question of time as conceived by shuzo kuki (1888~1941) , japanese philosopher, a contemporary of m. Heidegger. The first part contains a french translation of kuki's text, entitled keijijogaku-teki jikan (metaphysical- time) and a commentary on it. In this text, kuki established the concept of the temporality of a return to the identical. Reconciling the infinite with accomplishment itself, this concpet permits one to logically think about the infinite depth of the present moment. Kuki's thought originates from the temporality of transmigration, but fundamentally extends beyond this by its achieved infinity. Kuki is likewise inspired by the temporality of the heideggerien dasein, which underlines the futur mode despite the fact that kuki's idea differs from the latter by the primary importance of the present mode. The second part is reserved for analysing temporality in japanese poetry, which is the concrete example of kuki's concept of time. The third and final part consists of freeing the temporality of the human being, "existence" {jitsuzon) as kuki calls man. Existence is built upon three modes of being : the possible, the contingent and the necessary. These three modes correspond to those temporal forms of being : the futur, the present and the past. The present of the contingent mode is the temporality of the immediate experience of another's encounter. We can say that kuki defends the concept of the achieved present which has its own proper value. The temporality of genuine action, poetic creation and the immediate experience of another's encounter are examples of this concept

Abstract:
The postmodern is characterised by an incredulity towards the universal truths which mark modernity. Kuki Shuzo, like many intellectuals in Japan during the twenties and thirties, anticipates this discourse by attempting to confront the hegemonic claims and universal pretensions of modernity. Using the latest European methodologies, Kuki attempted to define a site of difference--a site that could escape the putative universality of Western modes of dealing with historical development and consciousness--through a particular reading of cultural artefacts, especially Edo poetry and painting. Yet Kuki would ultimately locate this special site within the temporal, spatial, and subjective boundaries of the modern nation implicating the geopolitics of modernity and providing an interesting context to study the complicity of art, ideology, and aesthetics in modern discourse.

Abstract:
Kuki Shuzo was a philosopher at the margins of the Kyoto School; his most significant contribution was the short work 'Iki' no kozo, in which he located Japanese uniqueness in the Edo demimonde aesthetic of iki, style or chic. This thesis surveys the major Western critiques of Kuki's aesthetics, focussing particularly on the work done by Peter Dale, Leslie Pincus, and Harry Harootunian revealing Kuki's borrowing from European modernism, especially fascist modernism, and attempts to uncover an alternative genealogy for Kuki in Japanese Pure Land thought. It finally asserts that Kuki's valorization of resignation, and his own retreat into the aesthetic, can be read as a form of resistance to Japanese nationalism.

Haokip, Jangkholam. "A theological study of identity among the tribal people of North-East India with a special reference to the Kukis of Manipur." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2010. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=166222.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the struggle for identity among the tribal people of North-East India with a special reference to the Kuki people of Manipur. It explores the cultural and religious traditions of the people and the changes brought to them in the process of western colonial administration and Christianization in the early part of the twentieth century.  It also investigates the socio-political and cultural situation of the people under the Independent India.  The thesis explores debates within sociology between primordialist and constructivist theoretical perspectives and concludes that, while identity is a social construct, it reflects the real socio-economic, cultural and political context within which it emerges and real struggles for justice and dignity on the part of marginalised peoples.  It is in this light that the current ethnic movements in North-East India are understood and their limitations are described and shown to result from the lack of a critical theological reflection.  This study demonstrates that Christianity, although playing an important role in the formation of the peoples’ identity in the new setting, neglected their traditional cultural values and hence became a factor contributing to the peoples’ identity crisis.  Dalit theology is taken as a dialogue partner in search of relevant theological response to the issue, but it is pointed out that while they have much in common, the additional task for tribal theology is to take into consideration the primal religious past as well as the difficult and complex socio-political realities shaping their present experience in a post-colonial, globalised world. The thesis outlines aspects of Kuki tradition which may contribute to a local theology and, in that process, can shape a new sense of identity, restoring dignity to the Kuki, while respecting the freedom and humanity of other peoples.

Prichard, Jesse. "Verb Stem Alternation in Vaiphei." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4470.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the form and function of verb stem alternations (VSAs) in Vaiphei, a Kuki-Chin (KC) language belonging to the larger Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. In the existing literature on Vaiphei and Kuki-Chin verb stem alternations, there is no treatment of the form and function of Vaiphei verb stem alternations and how they may be used in classifying Vaiphei in the broader Northern Kuki-Chin language family. I document the form and function of Vaiphei verb stem alternations, showing how these compare to other Northern Kuki-Chin languages and where to classify Vaiphei in Northern Kuki-Chin. Participants were selected based on their knowledge of Vaiphei and English and their access to the internet. These subjects participated by completing questionnaires translating English sentences into Vaiphei. Data was collected using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) platforms such as Skype and WhatsApp. Vaiphei VSAs showed a strong similarity to other Northern KC languages, with forms identical to VSAs in Sizang. Functions of VSAs were largely similar to other Northern KC languages, including valency changes, subordination, nominalizations, and subject focus. Grammaticalization of the verb piak "to give" into a benefactive morpheme, however, shows an innovation in the Vaiphei VSA system.

Son-Doerschel, Bianca. "The making of the Zo : the Chin of Burma and the Lushai and Kuki of India through colonial and local narratives 1826-1917 and 1947-1988." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2013. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/17365/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation illustrates the process of how the Zo of the Northern Arakan Yomas were reinvented into the Chin of Burma and the Lushai and Kuki of India during the British colonial period and in its aftermath after Independence in 1947/1948. Company officials, relying on informants, provided the first written accounts that justified delineation of the Zo mountains and the creation of the Chin, the Lushai and the Kuki. Colonial civilization projects fostered the Zo to accept colonial dominance by providing opportunities to participate in the colonial state. Christian missionaries brought modernity in the form of literacy. After the Zo learned to read and also write, they began participating in their own reinvention and identity-making. There were numerous factors that necessitated this construction and identity-making. The topography of the Northern Arakan Yomas makes them difficult to govern. The relative height and distance across the Northern Arakan Yomas prompted administrators to slice them up into manageable units. It is argued that this delineation, initially drawn for the ease of administration, was justified by the British using arguments about ethnicity, culture, and history. They, however, had fostered the re-invention of the past and with it the ethnicity and history of the Zo. American Baptist and Welsh Presbyterian missions took charge of the western and eastern of the Northern Arakan, respectively. Each group of missionaries determined which Zo language to transliterate creating elite dialects, and thus elite, among the Zo. The reading elite in Asia, America and in Europe began to demand stories, anecdotes and articles about the Zo. Hence, writers and editors relying on very little information, made sweeping generalizations about the new British subjects in the hills. It is further argued that the Zo eventually began participating in colonial endeavours through working with the British in the governing of the hills, by fighting for the Allied Forces in both World Wars and by serving the Government as police officers in the plains. They eventually began to reinvent their own histories in order to gain political agency on the world stage as well as to create elite groups among the Zo.

Abstract:
<p>The conditions for art in Romania have gone through big changes since the collapse of the regime in December of 1989. Under the Communist regime the artists had to work within a dualistic system completely unlike the one that developed in the West during the same period.</p><p>Similar to the other countries of the former Eastern block, the communist Romanian state had understood the great potential that art has as a form of propaganda. Thus the regime secured full control over the art that would be allowed into the public space. In response to the confines set on the artistic expressions, a non-official art began to develop alongside the official art of the state.</p><p>These two layers of Romanian art history were dissolved when Ceausescu’s regime finally came to an end in 1989. The underground art was suddenly available to an audience, while the official art was discredited. Out of the chaos that followed, a new Romanian art was born. During the 1990’s many Romanian artists started to process the past to try to understand their present situation, while others investigated Romanian identity as perceived from the outside.</p><p>The main focus of this paper has been to look at the conditions for contemporary Romanian art under Communism, and how they have changed since 1989.</p><p>My research has been based on literature such as The History of the Romanian People (1970), Primary Documents (2002) and Actionism in Romania during the Commuinist Era (2002), as well as on my own interviews with artists Constantin Mara, Ion Grigorescu, Matei Lazarescu, Kuki Constantinescu and Stefan Constantinescu.</p>

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the optimization of processes for extraction of bioactive lipophilic compounds from fruits of sea buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) into various types of plant oil bases using simple maceration. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with the characterization of this herb, its botanical classification, traditional use, chemical composition and medicinal effects. Increased attention is also paid to the characterization of individual types of plant oils used, namely camellia, camellia organic, passionflower, kukui and kiwi oil. The experimental part of the thesis deals with application of theoretical knowledge. The profile of total and free fatty acids for individual plant oil bases was determined by GC/FID, furthet the basic fat numbers were also determined. When optimizing the extraction, emphasis was placed not only on the effect of the extraction agent used, but also on the extraction time (1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 66 days). The macerates were continuously subjected to the determination of selected parameters (total amount of carotenoids, total amount of phytosterols, lutein, neoxanthin, astaxanthin, stigmasterol, -sitosterol and vitamin E) using UV-VIS spectroscopy and HPLC/PDA. Likewise, the peroxide number was monitored during maceration to assess the degree of oxidative degradation of macerates. The recovery of selected total parameters in individual oils did not differ significantly in most cases. On the contrary, the yield of individual monitored parameters differed significantly. At the same time, static maceration under our conditions was not very suitable for the extraction of vitamin E, stigmasterol and total phytosterols.

Abstract:
The topic of this diploma thesis is the Commemorative Book of Prague Nydrlak, whose origins date back to the 17th century in the Prague New Town. The records in the book were written mainly by the merchants who travelled to Prague to trade. Most of those merchants were most likely involved in the international trade with marine fish that were imported from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Due to the representative role of commemorative books, the majority of the merchants received their illuminations from professional artists. The introductory chapters of the thesis describe contemporary practice of business of the given period, specifics of Nydrlak in the context of the practice, the commemorative book culture of the 16th and 17th century, but also the fortunes of Nydrlak before its depositing into the Prague City Archives. A pivotal part of the paper is dedicated to the merchants themselves who would left some information about their lives in the book. Based on this source and several other archival documents, the thesis assesses the confessional, societal, regional, and proprietary stratification of the community that was assembled around Prague Nydrlak.
