Full textMedical technology deep brain stimulation is not only a scientific and technical product, but also a cultural and technical achievement with historical roots. This kind of interface actions occupy a firm place in medical history and cannot be determined separately from it. Interfering practices such as trepanations and cults of the skull are rooted in many different ways and reveal an ancient human desire for influence and empowerment. In this way, man can be represented as a connectable, adjustable and configurable entity within the framework of 'eutoper' world and technology images as well as deterministic human images. By integrating active technical elements into the human body, we are shifting the boundaries between biological and artificial entities. Both the hardware-software-relations as well as the body-spirit-relations are subject to connection and design processes. The interaction between human and non-human action participants results in novel interrelationships, which are traced with the aid of the Embodiment and Embedded Theory. The serious side effects of this interaction are approached with an empirical case study. The fact that this development towards a configuring design culture entails risk is explained with the help of the term 'experimental system'. It should be noted that deep brain stimulation is successful and fascinating not despite but because of experimental factors. Understanding neurostimulation primarily as a concept means focusing on cultural strata and actions. The extent to which we are prepared to embrace and intervene in shaping ourselves depends ultimately on our human self-conception.

Full textThe political thought of Ernst Cassirer is the focus of the present research work, which starts from a critical assessment of his reception and introduces a specific methodological approach in order to reconsider this issue and to clarify the sense in which it is legitimate to speak of a political thought in Cassirer’s Philosophy of Culture. Assuming that there is a continuity in his philosophy, this research focuses on the two fundamental moments in which Cassirer develops the principles of his political thought, that is to say the works “Leibniz’ System in seinen wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen” (1902) and “Freiheit und Form. Studien zur deutschen Geistesgeschichte” (1916). In his investigations on the ethical-legal foundation of the Geisteswissenschaften and on the problem of freedom and state can be recognized two crucial issues as the basis of all developments in Cassirer’s political thought between the World War I, the Weimar Republic and the Nazism: from the controversy with the philosopher Bruno Bauch about the concept of nation to the defense of a republican constitutionalism at the end of the 20’s, from the ethical and legal contributions of the 30’s till the inquiries on the political myth in his posthumous work “The Myth of the state” (1946). In this philosophical-political elaboration Cassirer’s main concern is to study the problem of the idealistic transformation of the state into a normative cultural concept and into a form of culture in the light of the history of political philosophy and political science in modern Europe. For each of the main points of Cassirer’s political production are therefore highlighted the historical-philosophical and cultural context, along with the sources and the most important references.

Full textThe authors of this thesis got the idea to this projekt from a lecture and from Drucker´s quote “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”. The purpose was to investigate what behaviours that drives results in a process oriented culture, and to develop a model for measuring these behaviours. The goal was to measure the behaviours in the organisation and to help them obtain a culture that exceed the culture of their competitors, and reaching process orientation using a quantitative survey in a pilot study. Even though we got answers from all participants in the survey, the population was too small to generate statistically significant results. The study is based on the theory of four clusters; “fumblers”, “talkers”, “organisers”, and “mappers” by Eriksson and Hellström (2013) and the results are displayed in diagrams and an IPA-matrix. The conclusion is that the organisation leans towards function orientation, but they are striving towards becoming process orientated. The total picture the authors got is they belong to the cluster “talkers” with a slight margin. They are heading in the direction of becoming process orientated by focusing on their communication though. The model was designed using research about what behaviours have a positive or a negative effect on the processorientated culture of the organisation. The weakness of the model is that it only takes the cornerstone “working with processes” into account and does not measure the other perspectives of quality culture.

Full textHow does one create an architectural design for a social and cultural context in a place that appears to be a hostile environment for people? The purpose of my studie was to to get a better understanding of the relation between nature, culture, landscape, people, technical application and environment at the world´s nothernmost town, Longyearbyen on Svalbard, whose extreme climate and months of darkness appear a frightening settlement for people. Is there room for architecture being more then a constructive shield against predators and the elements? My goal was to create a meetingplace for spontaneous activities without obligation; a Cultural campus and a hub around-the-clock.

Full textThis dissertation offers a history of modern commercial advertising during the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates that despite cultural barriers, advertising colonized the everyday world of Germans and began to encroach upon “German culture”. The work shows that the construct of “German culture” was not only defined by bourgeois high culture, but rather increasingly by factors from consumer culture. The imagery of advertising shaped national icons, created modified “surfaces” (for example, through illuminated ad media) and perceptions of space. Likewise, the logic of market differentiation and marketing began to determine social interactions as well as political communication (Hitler branding). This development did not progress without conflict: Debates surrounding both advertising as well as the direct confrontation between cultural critics and advertisers make clear that there was a massive collision between two mentalities. This allowed a conflict to emerge between traditional, guild thinking, high cultural representations and a putatively authentic aesthetics of content, on the one hand, and on the other hand, a “world of appearances” and aesthetic of the exterior form. One question in particular played a central role in this debate, namely: the extent to which capitalism, the market economy, consumption and the aesthetics of the modern Lebenswelt with its specific (commercial) texture were in accord with ideas of “Germanness.”

Full textThe aim with this essay was that on the basis of the care staff’s interpretations study how the unaccompanied refugee children consider cultural differences in the Swedish society and how it influenced the children. The study was carried out through six qualitative interviews with care workers at a municipal group accommodation for unaccompanied refugee children in the south of Sweden. The individual interviews were semi-structured and built on a list of questions with different subjects that were linked to the aim and question formulation for the essay. The analysis was carried out from Lazarus theory about coping and Antonovsky’s theory about “SOC”, sense of coherence, with focus on the three components, comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. In the conclusion it showed that the unaccompanied refugee children initially considered a lot to be difficult to understand, when meeting with the Swedish culture. Simultaneously they also considered that it meant many possibilities for them. The care staff became an important resource for the children to help them to understand and to manage the meeting with the culture differences, but also in order to motivate them furthermore. The curiosity, motivation and commitment of the children helped them furthermore to adopt a lot of the new culture, simultaneously as they also held on to a lot of their native country's culture.

Full textThe literaturestudy was to examine culture as a treatment and cultures effect on health. A strategic selection was performed and eight articles were selected from the database Discovery, through the library at the University of Gävle, given the study's purpose. A variety of audience and cultural activity as a treatment were selected. The results showed that culture has positive health effects on humans, both physically and mentally. Culture is stress-reducing, gives a sense of belonging, and a change of mind to see the world from a new perspective. The results also showed that people can manage their lives better and make greater effort to integrate more social. Culture is seen therefore as an appropriate treatment or/ and adjunct to medication for all audiences, especially for people with mental impairments and for individuals with physical illness or disability.

The aim of this study is to survey the school culture of an upper secondary school. This study will be a part of a discussion- and strategy material in a process to form a new school including grades from pre-school to upper secondary school, with a common view of students learning. Building a new school has aroused many reactions from the inhabitants of the municipality, including the teachers.
As survey method two different kinds of conversations have been used, “learning dialogue” and interviews. A major part of the teachers are included in the researches. The results from these researches shows that teachers do not experience that they are involved in any part of this school improvement process. The outcome of this is that a major part of the teachers in the upper secondary school are sceptic to “the new school- project”, but they do express a need for a common pedagogical view among the teachers.
This survey ends with a discussion where strategies for school improvement are suggested, with the intention to create a good environment for cultural development.
